    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, February 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Hawks get a visit from the Mavericks, the Magic meet the Hornets, and the Olympic hockey tourney hits the semifinals.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a dozen games on Friday, including Dallas at Atlanta. The Mavericks (37-21 SU, 24-34 ATS) have won five straight games, knocking off the Lakers 101-96 in their last outing on Wednesday. Dirk Nowitzki led the way with 31 points for Dallas in that contest, while Jason Terry tossed in 30 points off the bench. The Hawks (36-20 SU, 34-22 ATS) got past Minnesota 98-92 in their Wednesday contest, as Josh Smith picked up 27 points and 10 rebounds. Joe Johnson was good for 21 points that day, while Al Horford grabbed 13 rebounds.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Friday: Cleveland at Toronto, New York at Washington, Minnesota at Oklahoma City, Charlotte at Memphis, Portland at Chicago, San Antonio at Houston, Detroit at Denver, the Clippers at Phoenix, Utah at Sacramento, Philadelphia at the Lakers, and Orlando at New Orleans. The Magic (39-19 SU, 29-26-3 ATS) took care of Houston by a score of 110-92 on Wednesday, with Dwight Howard pouring in 30 points. The Hornets (30-28 SU, 29-29 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from a 115-92 loss to Milwaukee.

As well, there is one ranked team in action around college basketball on Friday, as No. 15 Butler visits Valparaiso. The Bulldogs (25-4 SU, 12-17 ATS) are riding a 17-game winning streak into their Friday matchup, and they got past Siena 70-53 in their last contest. Shelvin Mack tossed in 23 points for Butler on that day. The Crusaders (15-15 SU, 15-9-2 ATS) fell 87-70 to Bowling Green last time out, with Brandon McPherson scoring 16 points in the loss. Butler and Valparaiso met back on December 5, with the ranked Bulldogs cruising to an easy 84-67 victory.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the Olympic men's hockey tournament stages its semifinals on Friday, with the United States vs. Finland at 3:00pm ET, and Canada vs. Slovakia at 9:30pm ET. The Americans survived their quarterfinal matchup with Switzerland on Wednesday, pulling out a 2-0 victory, while the Finns blanked the Czech Republic by that same score. Slovakia upset Sweden in a tight 4-3 win in their quarterfinal game on Wednesday, while Canada blasted Russia 7-3. The winners of Friday's semifinal contests will move on to the Gold Medal Game on Sunday.

Bettor's best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Cleveland Cavaliers at Toronto Raptors – Cavs played on Thursday night. Chris Bosh (ankle) has missed the last three games and is doubtful.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Knicks-Wizards total jumped from an opener of 204 to 205 at most shops. The last three games in this series have gone under.

The total in the Denver-Detroit game has elevated from 200 to 201 in some markets.

      Weather to watch

The Northeastern states are being battered with snow. The pinnacle of the most recent snowstorm is expected to come early Friday morning.

Airport delays are expected in Boston, New York and Philadelphia.

The Cavaliers played in Boston on Thursday night and might face some travel problems as they turn around and head to Toronto for a Friday matchup.

There are a number of Ivy League basketball games on the board for Friday and any one of those being played in the Northeast could be postponed.

      Who’s hot

Sacramento State is one of the worst teams in the Big Sky but one of the most profitable teams in college basketball. The Hornets are 15-7-2 ATS this season and 6-3 ATS in their last 10 games.

The Suns have played to the under in 9-of-10 games with the single over exceeding the total by 1.5 points.

      Who’s not

The Rockets are 3-7 SU and ATS in their last 10 games.

Columbia has dropped 7-of-10 and are 4-6 ATS during that stretch.

      Key stat

Less than 40 – Shooting percentage of nine of Butler’s last 11 opponents. The Bulldogs look for their 18th straight win – already holding the nation’s longest streak – against Valparaiso on Friday. No team has gone undefeated in the Horizon League since the 1995-96 season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kings starting center Jason Thompson will miss up to two weeks with a pair of non-displaced transverse fractures in his lower back. Sean May and Spencer Hawes will see extended playing time in Thompson’s absence. Thompson is averaging 12.7 ppg and 8.8 rpg and his injury makes a bad team even worse.

      Game of the day

Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks (-3.5, 195)

      Notable quotable

"You know what, I'm numb to everything at this point and I think our guys are that way. What we're going to do is we're going to put five guys on the floor, and those five guys are going to go out there and compete and play hard, and if we do that, we're going to give ourselves chances."

-- Wizards coach Flip Saunders told the media after Josh Howard was lost for the season.

      Tips and notes

      - The NBA has informed Caron Butler that he can't chew straws during games anymore. This is like telling a baseball player he can’t chew tobacco, but go out and play like you usually do. Butler goes through about 12 straws per game and this rule implementation may affect his output for the Mavericks. Dallas has won five straight since Butler joined the team.

      - There’s a similarity between Hedo Turkoglu and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The sharp-shooting Turk is a Cavalier spread killer. Over the last two seasons, the teams Turkoglu has played for (Raptors/Magic) are 10-1 ATS versus the Cavs. Odds are not available for Friday’s game but Chris Bosh is doubtful to play so the Raps should be getting plenty of points.

      - Houston's new lineup is obviously not gelling. Rick Adelman said his team has “lost whatever confidence” it had before the break and the players aren’t playing with the same “energy and enthusiasm” as before. Shane Battier said the Rockets are a “team in search of new identity.” Houston has dropped three straight overall and ATS.

        Friday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Boston Red Sox........

        6) Junichi Tazawa, P-- Minor leaguers hit .219 against him in 20 starts, but big leaguers scored 23 runs in his 25 IP with the big club.

        5) Ryan Kalish, OF-- Hit .271 with 13 HRs after getting promoted to AA, but is he a CF or a corner outfielder?

        4) Lars Anderson, 1B-- Struggled in AA LY, hitting .154 after All-Star break. Is still best power-hitting prospect in Boston's system.

        3) Josh Reddick, OF-- Got rushed little big LY, hitting .127 in 71 ABs in AAA, then .169 in 59 ABs with big club, but he is 5-tool player.

        2) Casey Kelly, P-- Spent $3M to discourage him from playing for the Tennessee Vols' football team; is concentrating on pitching now.

        1) Ryan Westmoreland, OF-- Hit .296 in NY-Penn League, after having labrum surgery; Sox spent $2M so he wouldn't go to Vanderbilt.

Friday's List of 13: How college hoop has changed in last 30 years

These factors aren't listed in order of importance; in one way or another, they've all had a hand in changing college basketball over last 30 years.

        13) 3-point line-- Gave the little guy a chance. Made a cross-court skip pass after dribble penetration a very dangerous offensive weapon.

        12) Used to be, a 3-on-2 fast break was like this: Point guard dribbles to foul line, stops, passes to one of wings cutting at 45-degree angle to the basket. Now, at least one of the wings is fanning out to the arc so he can score three points instead of two, and you better guard him.

        11) ESPN-- I've seen Idaho play four times this year. In 1979, I never saw Larry Bird play until late February. Leagues that aren't on ESPN aren't recruiting as well as they should be.

        10) Expansion of conferences for football-- ACC has been hurt by this, since adding Miami-Florida State-Virginia Tech-Boston College has taken lot of lustre away from ACC tournament. There are rumors now that the Pac-10 might be adding Utah and BYU in the near future.

        9) Internet-- Public figures have to be lot more careful now; everyone has a camera in their cellphone and they're not shy about taking pics, and then posting them on YouTube or Facebook. You don't believe me, go look at the pictures that got Larry Eustachy fired at Iowa State.

        8) Rule that says kids can't go directly from high school to the NBA has hurt the NCAA tournament, at least its hurt the first weekend, because it has widened the gap between the haves and have-nots. I'm thinking this rule might get abolished, which would help the college game.

        7) The 10-foul, 2-free throw bonus rule has kept most games from being foul shooting contests in last 2:00. Used to be, when everything after 7th foul was 1-and-1 foul shots, teams that trailed would hack away for last 2:00, hoping teams would gag at charity stripe. Now that they take two foul shots after 10th foul, there's a lot less of that.

        6) Rise of spring/summer basketball-- Kids play lot more games in spring and summer, and practice skills less; there's both good and bad in this, as kids are playing against better competition in these travel tournaments, but also, the summer coaches sometimes have more input that high school coaches do, and thats more often than not a bad thing.

        5) Coaches get paid a lot more now-- I'm pretty sure the coach at Albany, my alma mater, makes over $225,000 a year, and they're 7-23 in a horrible league this season. Now he's made the NCAAs twice in last five years, so he's earned the school a lot of money too, but increased pay translates to increased expectations, and less patience by those who are paying.

Put it this way; two of the eight Ivy League coaches got canned before the conference schedule started this season. Wow.

        4) Bracket Busters-- ESPN has given a Saturday each February to teams like Western Carolina, Iona, Charleston and Old Dominion, that you don't see on TV very much. Increased TV exposure should help recruiting, no?

        3) Championship Week-- In the 70's, ACC had their tournament, but no one else did; now, its a 10-day extravanganza of high-pressure games that make or break teams and coaches. One year, Wisconcin-Milwaukee won its conference title game by a slim point, but then got to Sweet 16 in the NCAAs; right after that, Bruce Pearl took off for Tennessee. If they lose that conference title game, Pearl might still be in Milwaukee.

        2) Expansion of March Madness to 65 teams-- Kansas won 1988 national title as a 6-ssed; Arizona won in '97 as a 4-seed. In 1974, Maryland was #3 in nation, but lost ACC tourney final in OT to #2 NC State, and didn't even go to NCAAs, which NC State won. At-large bids have made regular season a lot less pressurized, and March Madness a lot more fun.

        1) Shot clock-- When I was in college, I sat on bench during OT games in which the team that won the tap in OT held for one shot. Seriously. The shot clock made college hoop much more telegenic, and thats what the TV folks are looking for. Its more of a players' game now, and thats good.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats at Memphis Grizzlies (-3.5, 193.5)

"We're losing momentum, we're losing chemistry, and a lot of things have to change fast.''

That’s what Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace told reporters after Charlotte fell 102-93 to the Utah Jazz. The setback was the Cats’ third straight loss and seventh in their last 10 games. Charlotte is just 1-7 against the spread its last eight games.

Larry Brown’s boys seemed like a playoff lock before the All-Star break but now they find themselves on the outside looking in.

"I think everyone is in a different place from each other,” Wallace told the Charlotte Observer. "It's no longer 'team this' or 'team that,' it's 'I this' and 'I that.’”

Memphis doesn’t share the same type of problem. Look for the Grizzlies to add to Charlotte’s pain.

          Pick: Grizzlies

Los Angeles Clippers at Phoenix Suns (-10, 208)

The Suns are one of the hottest teams in the league. They’re 10-2 straight up and against the spread over their last 12 games with wins over Dallas, Denver and Atlanta highlighting the hot streak.

“I like everything on the stat sheet,” Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry told the Arizona Republic following a 106-95 win over the 76ers on Wednesday.

Giving veteran point guard Steve Nash a game off to rest his back this week proved to be a great decision. Not only did Nash play great in his first game back, reserve guard Goran Dragic had a chance to shine. Dragic guided the Suns to a 104-102 win over the Thunder while collecting 16 points and 10 assists.

"Goran did a great job of running the team and finding guys," Gentry said after the game. "He doesn't try to be Steve or play the way Steve plays. He just tries to be himself. That's helped him as much as anything. You can't be Steve."

It’s tough finding value fading the Clippers. The under looks like the better play. Phoenix has played below the total in nine of its last 10 games.

          Pick: Under

Game of the day: Mavericks at Hawks
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks (-3.5, 195)

            Not-so Hot-lanta

Atlanta has played four straight road games since the All-Star break, going 1-2 straight up before getting a huge win at Utah to close out their trip at .500.

Then the Hawks returned home to face the last-place T-Wolves and won 98-92 Wednesday night. It wasn’t a dominating performance by any means, but was their 22nd home win in 28 chances this season and 10th in their last 12 contests at home.

“We were OK,” said Hawks guard Joe Johnson said after the win. “It was nothing to really write home about.”

Despite the win, Atlanta has had its share of struggles lately. The Hawks are averaging just 95.5 points in the last six games (101.4 season average) and Sixth Man of the Year candidate Jamal Crawford has struggled mightily since returning from a shoulder injury.

Crawford was 0-for-7 and had just one point in their victory over Minnesota. He is now 18-of-54 (33.3 percent) and is averaging just 11.6 PPG (5.6 points off his season average) since returning Feb. 17.

“It’s all right,” Crawford told the media about his left shoulder. “It’s OK. I’m out there playing, so there are no excuses.”

            New-look Dallas

Dallas is coming off of arguably its biggest win of the season after Wednesday’s 101-96 home victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. It was the Mavericks fifth consecutive victory after losing six of their previous eight games.

Wednesday’s game had a playoff-like atmosphere with 24 lead changes and eight ties and the win gave Dallas momentum as it enters the home stretch of their schedule.

"It reinforces what we're doing and reinforces the idea of hard play and commitment to defense," coach Rick Carlisle told the media. "It's a great win. Too much will be made of it, probably. But we just continue to build on things."

The Mavs were one of the big winners at the NBA trade deadline. They acquired Brendan Haywood, DeShawn Stevenson and Caron Butler in a trade with the Wizards and each player has been impressive in their early action with their new team. Butler and Haywood are averaging a combined 25.6 PPG and 16 RPG in their first six games with the Mavs while Stevenson is getting recognized in a different way.

"I thought the key guy in the game was probably Stevenson, with the way he started the game for us,” Carlisle told the media of his new guard. “He gave us great defense on Bryant. Anytime he was in there, he held his position strong. He played within what we were doing."

Butler missed last night’s game against the Lakers because of an unexpected reaction to medication, but he will be back for the matchup with Atlanta.

            Head-to-head

Atlanta won the earlier meeting between these two back in early December. It was a relatively ugly game for both offenses as each team shot below 38 percent and were a combined 10-for-37 from 3-point range.

The Hawks had seven fewer turnovers and four more rebounds and that was enough to get the 80-75 victory at Dallas. Atlanta has won two straight home matchups with the Mavericks, holding them to just 90.5 points per game.

The home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings between these two and the Mavs are just 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings in Atlanta.

            Trends

Dallas is just 2-5 ATS in its last seven games vs. Eastern Conference and 2-7 ATS in its last nine vs. NBA Southeast.

Atlanta is 4-1 ATS in its last five games vs. NBA Southwest but is just 2-5 ATS in its last seven games following a straight-up win.
