    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, February 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cavs and Celtics meet in a key Eastern Conference clash in Boston, while second-ranked Kentucky hosts South Carolina.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are three games on the NBA's schedule for Thursday, with Milwaukee at Indiana, Denver at Golden State, and Cleveland at Boston. The Cavaliers put an end to their three-game skid on Tuesday night, getting past the Hornets 105-95 at home. LeBron James scored 20 points to go along with 13 assists for Cleveland in that win, while Shaquille O'Neal contributed 20 points and seven rebounds. The Celtics are also coming off a win on Tuesday night, as they got past New York 110-106 at home. Ray Allen led Boston with a team-high 24 points against the Knicks, while Rajon Rondo picked up 15 points and 16 assists.

As well, five ranked teams are in action on the college basketball schedule for Thursday, with Santa Clara at No. 18 Gonzaga, No. 17 Wisconsin at Indiana, Georgia at No. 16 Vanderbilt, Tulsa at No. 5 Duke, and South Carolina at No. 2 Kentucky. The Wildcats won their seventh game in a row on Saturday, getting past Vanderbilt by a score of 58-56; DeMarcus Cousins had 19 points in that win, which moved Kentucky to 26-1 (14-11 ATS). The Gamecocks fell 63-55 to Tennessee in their last game on Saturday, with Brandis Raley-Ross scoring 16 points in the defeat. South Carolina is now 14-12 (9-14 ATS) through 26 games.

Bettor's best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics – Paul Pierce (thumb, flu) missed last game and is questionable. Marquis Daniels (flu) did not practice Wednesday and is questionable. (see note below)

Indiana Pacers at Milwaukee Bucks – Pacers played on Wednesday. Danny Granger (personal) did not play in the last two games and is probable.

Line to keep an eye on

The Nuggets-Warriors total dropped from an opener of 227.5 to as low as 226.5 at some shops. The last four games in this series have gone over and these are the second- and third-highest scoring team in the league.

      Weather to watch

Another major snowstorm is expected to hit the Northeast beginning Thursday morning.

The storm will move rapidly northward from the Delmarva Peninsula up through western New England. Travel problems will be apparent in the region with metro areas like NYC and Philadelphia expecting the biggest delays.

The Knicks are scheduled to play the Wizards on Friday and travel plans could be affected by the storm.

The second run of the women's giant slalom at the Winter Olympics on Wednesday was postponed because of dense fog. The final leg of the event was rescheduled for Thursday.

American star Lindsey Vonn crashed during her first run Wednesday, knocking her out of medal contention. She fractured her right pinkie in the fall, which puts her status for Friday's slalom up in the air.

      Who’s hot

The Blue Devils have won six straight games and are 3-1-2 ATS during that stretch.

North Texas has won 8-of-9 games and is 7-1 ATS in that span.

      Who’s not

Louisiana Tech is 0-6 ATS in its last six games as the favorite.

Hawaii has dropped eight straight and is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games.

      Key stat

77 – Number of consecutive games won by the Duke Blue Devils at home versus non-conference competition. Duke hosts Tulsa on Thursday and is favored by 18 points. The last time the Devils met the Hurricanes was in 1999 and the Dukies covered as 24.5 favorites in a 41-point blowout.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Pacers swingman Danny Granger has missed the team’s last two games dealing with a personal issue and his status for Wednesday versus Milwaukee is uncertain. Coach Jim O’Brien called the situation “serious” and had no timetable for his return. Mike Dunleavy has started in place of Granger but has struggled.

      Games of the day

      Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics

Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors (+6, 227)

      Notable quotable

"In the fourth quarter, you saw the defensive tenacity and that got us in transition a lot. That's when we're at our best."

-- Warriors rookie guard Stephen Curry said after the team held Atlanta to 14 fourth-quarter points during Sunday’s 108-104 comeback victory.

      Tips and notes

      - The flu bug may be circling the Celtics locker room as both Marquis Daniels and Paul Pierce are dealing with the illness. Those two players are the team’s best options to defend LeBron James on Thursday but both missed practice Wednesday and are questionable. Newly acquired forward Marcus Landry may be asked to guard James.

      - Phil Mickelson was reported to be honing his putting touch at TPC Scottsdale this week, a course he played many times while attending Arizona State. He told reporters he didn’t want to lose “momentum” missing 8- to 12-foot putts like he has been this season. Mickelson is a two-time champion at the Phoenix Open (1996, 2005) and is getting +800 odds to win the tournament.

      - Golden State has incurred third-quarter deficits of 18 points or more in the last two games and battled back in both. The young squad has a “never give up” attitude and defeated the Hawks on Monday after trailing by 18 late in the third. The Warriors have won three games this season when trailing by 17 points or more but hadn’t accomplished that feat prior to this year since the early 70’s.

        Thursday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Baltimore Orioles........

        6) Brandon Snyder, 1B-- Pounded ball in AA, but only hit .248 with two HRs in 262 ABs at AAA, where he'll likely start this season.

        5) Matt Hobgood, P-- First HS kid taken in LY's draft, he is 6-4, 246 but yet to show why he was drafted so high-- got $2.4M to sign.

        4) Jake Arrieta, P-- TCU alum pitched for Olympic team in '08, had a 5-8, 3.93 mark in 17 AAA starts LY. Command could use some work.

        3) Zach Britton, LHP-- Has already thrown 385 minor league innings, but hasn't gotten above Class A. Likely to start this year in AA.

        2) Josh Bell, 3B-- Acquired from Dodgers in George Sherrill deal at the trade deadline; hit .294 with 20 HRs in AA last season.

        1) Brian Matusz, LHP-- 5-2, 4.63 in eight starts for the Orioles LY; had 38 strikeouts in 45 IP.

        ************************************************** **********

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) At this time of year, with conference tournaments right around the corner, I'd say 10% of teams are on serious rolls; teams like Kentucky, very hard to go against them right now. Another 10% of teams are in the tank and must be avoided; teams like North Carolina that are playing like they can't wait for the season to end. The other 80%, at least this season, are all wildly erratic- their coaches don't know how well they''ll play.

        12) For instance, Drexel had been very good at home this year, but lost as 13-point home favorite to NC-Wilmington last night. Makes no sense.

        11) You're telling me there's a College Basketball Hall of Fame but Jerry West and David Thompson weren't in it before this week? Yikes.

        10) Sportsbook.com actually has prop bets on the NFL Combine that is taking place in Indianapolis this week; over/under on Tim Tebow's time in 40-yard dash is 4.82; CJ Spiller is -$125 to run faster 40 than Jahvid Best.

        9) Jeannie Buss, whose dad owns the Lakers and boyfriend coaches them, suggested that NBA All-Star Game might be more fun if the two coaches in the game chose sides, as you would do on the playground. That would be more fun than the game, watching who would get picked last.

        8) The minimum rookie salary in the NBA is $473,604.

        7) Just a guess here, but the coach of the Russian Olympic hockey team isn't going to enjoy the rest of his time in Vancouver, or the long ride back home. What a debacle against Canada, losing 7-3.

        6) Butler kid hit turnaround jumper from baseline at buzzer; Marquette wins by a hoop in OT at St John's, a dagger for Red Storm. Marquette's eight road games in Big East have been decided by a total of 19 points.

        5) Marquette played in Queens last night, then plays in New Jersey this Sunday at Seton Hall; do they go home and fly back, or just stay in area all weekend? I'm guessing they stay in the northeast, but I'm not sure.

        4) LSU finally got its first SEC win, beating an Arkansas team that beat the Tigers by 35 in their first meeting 14 days ago. That leaves Toledo and Fordham as only teams in country that have yet to win a conference game this season.

        3) Is it me, or has Notre Dame played just as well since Harangody went out with his knee injury?

        2) Bad news for Purdue, as Robbie Hummel hurt his knee and watched second half of game at Minnesota on crutches; Boilers rallied to win by a point, 59-58, but its potentially an extremely costly victory for Purdue.

        1) Big night for Stony Brook, which clinched America East regular season title; worst they can do now is an NIT bid, which for a team in America East, especially one on Long Island, is a pretty good deal.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Milwaukee Bucks at Indiana Pacers

Milwaukee is making a mint for loyal backers on the road in recent games.

The Bucks have won four straight games in opposing gyms, covering in each of those road matchups. Their most recent victory away from home came inside Madison Square Garden, where Milwaukee defeated the New York Knicks 83-67 as a 1.5-point underdog Monday night.

Andrew Bogut was a monster in that win, scoring 24 points and collecting 20 rebounds. He’s got the Bucks sniffing a playoff spot. Heading into Wednesday’s home game against the New Orleans Hornets, Milwaukee has won three straight and seven of its last 10 games to move into the eighth and final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference.

"It's huge anytime you're playing for a playoff seed," Bogut told NBA.com. "The games are much bigger, the games are more exciting, electrifying, more energy in every building that you go to and every city that you go to. We haven't experienced that in the last couple of years. I think the guys miss it."

Milwaukee is just 10-19 on the road this year but boast an 18-11 record against the spread in the role of visitor.

The Bucks have won the past two meeting with the Pacers, including an 84-81 win as 1-point road underdogs at Conseco Fieldhouse back in December. Milwaukee is also 7-3 ATS in its past 10 games against Indiana and has covered in four straight meetings.

          Pick: Bucks

What Bettors Need to Know: TNT doubleheader
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics

            Share the wealth

Cleveland (44-14, 28-29-1 ATS) won its first game in three tries with newest Cavalier Antawn Jamison, pulling out a 105-95 home victory over the New Orleans Hornets Tuesday night.

Jamison made 7-of-14 field goals and had 18 points, six rebounds and two steals for his best outing in his new uniform. Six Cavaliers put up double figures in points, including LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal with 20 apiece. A balanced offensive attack also had five players attempt at least 10 shots and no single player took more than 16 field goal attempts.

While the offense clicked, Cleveland is still unhappy with its defensive play.

“We've played some great defense over the course of the year,” LeBron said after the win. “We know in order to win ball games consistently, we have to be good defensively. We'll get it back.”

“We're definitely not where we want to be right now,” added coach Mike Brown, whose team just ended a three-game losing streak. “We've got to fight through it.”

            Trade of their own

The Celtics (36-19, 21-33-1 ATS) also made a deadline deal, acquiring Nate Robinson from the Knicks in exchange for Eddie House. Robinson made his Boston debut Tuesday night and it just happened to come against the Knicks. Making headlines but few baskets, Robinson scored four points in 16 minutes as his new team prevailed 110-106.

Another thing Boston had in common with Cleveland earlier this week is dismal defense. The Celtics saw New York shoot better than 52 percent from the floor and they were almost helpless against Knicks’ big man David Lee, who recorded 28 points and 15 rebounds.

The defense had better clamp down Thursday because Boston could be without leading scorer Paul Pierce (17.9 ppg) due to a sprained right thumb.

“It's a little banged up right now, so it's something I'm going to think about—taking a few days off and letting it heal,” Pierce said on Monday prior to sitting out Tuesday’s contest.

            Prior engagement

The Cavs and Celtics have met just once this season and it was the very first game of the year for both teams. Boston went into Cleveland on October 27 as a 5-point underdog and came away with a 95-89 victory. The Cavs, who were playing without Delonte West, got 38 points from James but allowed the Celtics to shoot 47.4 percent from 3-point range (9-for-19).

            Trending topics

The Cavs are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five against the Eastern Conference. The Celtics are 2-7 in their last nine overall and 0-4 in their last four against the East.

Cleveland (27-28-3 O/U) has not been a good over/under play this season, while Boston (25-29-1 O/U) has been a mediocre under play. The under is 6-2 in the Celtics’ last eight overall, but the over is 5-2-1 in the Cavs’ last eight contests overall.

The Celtics are 2-6 ATS in their last seven home games against Cleveland.

Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors (+6, 227)

            Rockiness in the Rockies

Dating back to February 1, the Nuggets (37-19, 26-27-3 ATS) have been alternating wins and losses. As a result, they are 5-4 (4-4-1 ATS) this month, having opened with an overtime win against Sacramento and most recently handling Boston 114-105 Sunday.

“We're still kind of inconsistent at times,” said Kenyon Martin, stating the obvious. “If we can kind of lock in and do the stuff that we do well and positive in the games that we win, and just learn from the mistakes that we make, that will go a long way for us.”

Case in point: the Nuggets are 6-0 this season against the Lakers, Cavs, Celtics and Magic.

“If we come out focused like we did (against Boston), like we did against the Lakers, like we did against Cleveland, we're a tough team to play with,” noted Carmelo Anthony.

Now the issue is getting the job done against a disappointing squad like Golden State (16-40, 31-24-1 ATS).

            Just like pops

The Warriors have also been alternating wins and losses over the past two weeks, starting with a loss to Dallas on February 8 and 30-point win over the Clippers two days later. Golden State is 3-4 in that span (4-3 ATS), coming off 110-102 home loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

While winning three of seven is nothing special, it’s a lot better than the nine-game losing streak Golden State endured in late January and early February. Part of the reason for the minor improvement is increased time for rookie Stephen Curry (15.3 ppg, 5.1 apg) at point guard. In their first 50 games, the Warriors scored at least 35 fastbreak points on four occasions. They have reached that mark in three of their last five outings with Curry seeing more time at the point, including two of those games with Monta Ellis on the sidelines.

In the meantime, Curry, the son of former NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry, has maintained his scoring prowess. He has tallied double figures in eight straight games, has scored more than 30 points in two of his past six outings and led a furious comeback against the Hawks by going 13-of-18 from the floor in a 108-104 victory Sunday.

            Prior engagements

The Nuggets and Warriors have already played three times this season and all three games were shootouts. Denver won the first two contests at home (135-107 December 1 and 123-122 on January 5) then visited Golden State on January 20 and pulled out a 123-118 overtime thriller. The Warriors covered the spread in each of the past two outings.

            Trending topics

The Nuggets are 3-13-1 ATS in their last 17 games against teams with losing SU records. The Warriors are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 against the Western Conference.

Both Denver (27-29 O/U) and Golden State (26-30 O/U) have leaned slightly toward the under, which is 4-1 in the Warriors’ last five overall. The over, however, is 5-2 in the Nuggets’ last seven overall.

The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the two teams and the home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six head-to-head encounters.
