    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, February 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cavaliers play host to the Hornets, Syracuse meets Providence, and the Olympic hockey tourney starts its playoffs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are eight games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, with New York at Boston, Minnesota at Miami, Portland at New Jersey, Phoenix at Oklahoma City, the Lakers at Memphis, Detroit at Sacramento, Philadelphia at Golden State, and New Orleans at Cleveland. The Cavaliers lost their third straight game on Sunday, falling 101-95 on the road against Orlando despite LeBron James' 33-point performance. The Hornets are coming off a 102-94 home win over Houston on Sunday; David West scored 27 points, while Darren Collison added 26 points.

As well, the top teams in action on the college basketball schedule for Tuesday are Tennessee (at Florida), New Mexico (at Colorado State), Georgetown (at Louisville), Kansas State (at Texas Tech), and Syracuse (at Providence). The Orange shook off a loss to Louisville by knocking off Georgetown 75-71 in their last game on Thursday; that put Syracuse at 25-2 straight-up, and they're 15-7 ATS on the season. The Orange and Friars already met once this season back on February 2, with Syracuse cruising to an 85-68 home victory in that matchup.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the Olympic men's hockey tournament begins its playoffs on Tuesday with the qualification round: Switzerland vs. Belarus, Czech Republic vs. Latvia , Slovakia vs. Norway, and Canada vs. Germany. The Canadian team lost 5-3 to the United States on Sunday night, which kept them from getting a bye into the quarterfinal round of the event. The United States, Sweden, Russia, and Finland all earned byes directly into the quarterfinals, which will take place Wednesday.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Minnesota Timberwolves at Miami Heat: Heat guard Dwyane Wade (calf) is doubtful and guard Rafer Alston (hand) is questionable.

New York Knicks at Boston Celtics: Celtics guard Nate Robinson (flu) is probable and forward Paul Pierce (thumb) is doubtful.

Los Angeles Lakers at Memphis Grizzlies: Lakers guard Kobe Bryant (ankle) and center Andrew Bynum (hip) are probable.

Philadelphia 76ers at Golden State Warriors: Sixers guard Willie Green (shoulder) is probable and forward Jason Smith (ankle) is questionable. Warriors forward Ronny Turiaf (flu) is questionable and forward Corey Maggette (hip) is out.

Lines to keep an eye on

Portland Trail Blazers at New Jersey Nets: Total opened at 183.5 and jumped to 184.5. Under is 6-1 in the Blazers' last seven.

Detroit Pistons at Sacramento Kings: Total opened at 194.5 and dropped to 193.5. Under is 3-1 in the Kings' last four.

Florida opened as a 4-point home favorite over Tennessee but the line has dropped to 3. The Vols are 8-1 SU vs. the Gators in their last nine meetings.

      Who's hot

Dallas Mavericks are 8-2 SU and ATS in their last 10.

Oklahoma Ciy Thunder have won nine in a row SU.

Miami Heat are 5-1 SU and ATS in their last six.

      Who's not

New Jersey Nets are 1-11 SU in their last 12.

New York Knicks are 1-9 SU in their last 10.

Minnesota Timberwolves have lost their last six SU.

      Key stat

83-4 - The combined scores of the American and Canadian women's hockey teams at the Vancouver Olympics. The U.S. advanced to Thursday's gold medal game by outscoring its four opponents by a total of 40-2. The U.S. will face Canada, which defeated its four foes 43-2.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash did not join the team on its flight to Oklahoma City to face the rolling Thunder because of back and abdominal pain. Nash played through the pain Sunday to dish out 17 assists, but the Suns opted to rest him. The two-time MVP runs the Suns' offense, which could have trouble keeping pace with the Thunder with second-year reserve Goran Dragic as his replacement.

      Game of the day

Tennessee Volunteers at Florida Gators (-3, 136)

      Notable quotable

''I just bet peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the game. That's all I did. It's a lot of peanut butter [I owe]. Trying to figure out who wants crunch and who wants smooth is going to be the tough part.''

-- Chicago Cubs pitcher and Canada native Ryan Dempster joked after he was spotted paying off teammates Monday, one day after the U.S. upset Canada in Winter Olympics men's hockey.

      Tips and notes

-- What's being called the "Miller-cle on Ice" in the U.S. prompted calls for a goalie change in Canada after the Americans' Olympic hockey upset of the Canucks. Roberto Luonga, playing on his home ice, will replace Martin Brodeur in net vs. Germany, which was shut out twice in group play. Regardless of who's in goal, Canada's pride and professionalism are the main reasons to load up on the Leaf.

-- No stat is more telling for Tennessee than rebounding. In the Vols' 20 wins they have outrebounded teams by an average margin of 8.8. In their six losses they were beaten on the boards by a 4.1 margin. They edged Florida 61-60 last month and had six more rebounds for their sixth straight win in the series, and that was before the return of Vols' big man Brian Williams, who had seven boards Saturday.

-- Virginia is playing its fourth road game and its fifth game overall in the last 11 days tonight at Miami, the result of a snow postponement vs. Maryland. The Cavaliers have lost their last five SU and the travel is starting to take a toll. The Cavs were routed 72-49 at Clemson on Saturday and had just enough time to get home and fly to Miami, which is 11-2 at home this season.

        Tuesday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the top minor league prospects for the Atlanta Braves........

        6) Christian Bethancourt, C-- Played for Panama in 2004 Little League World Series. Won't be 19 years old until September.

        5) Craig Kimbrel, P-- Allowed 46 hits in 95 minor league innings, as foes hit just .143 against him. Drafted by Braves two years in a row.

        4) Mike Minor, LHP-- Pitched at Vanderbilt for three years, had 0.64 ERA in first four pro starts. Not overpowering, has great pickoff move.

        3) Julio Teheran, P-- Top prospect in Appalachian League LY; has been hampered by injuries in his career so far.

        2) Freddie Freeman, 1B-- Just 20 years old, already played three years in minor leagues. Supposedly a tremendous fielder.

        1) Jason Heyward, OF-- Has put up huge numbers in minor leagues, but only concern is whether he'll be durable; has been hurt a lot.

        ************************************************** *******************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

        13) Big difference between NHL and Olympic hockey is TV timeouts, or lack thereof; can play your best guys a lot more when you have built-in breaks for television commercials.

        12) Marquette's seven Big East road games have been decided by a total of only 17 points.

        11) The movie Avatar has earned $687.8M at the box office. Wow.

        10) Texas Longhorns' PG Dogus Balbay tore his left ACL, is out for the year, terrible news for the struggling Texas team.

        9) Only three of the Utah Jazz' 12 players were 1st round draft choices.

        8) Johnny Damon took $8M from the Tigers for one year, after saying his heart was in New York. Not sure what this does for Austin Jackson, the Tigers' CF prospect, but it can't help him any.

        7) You watch lot of college basketball on ESPN, and some guys you like their work, some not so much. Odd decision that ESPN seems to have put Robert M Knight ahead of both Fran Fraschilla and Bill Raftery in their analysts' pecking order. Knight was a better coach than those two, but on the air, he's nowhere near as good. Plus, he still seems unfriendly.

        6) Sad to see the Chargers release LaDanian Tomlinson, but thats the way the NFL works in the salary cap era. He'll catch on with another team and hopefully still be a productive player. Once a running back hits 30, he's on borrowed time, thats just the way it is. LT did get $1M from Chargers as a parting gift, but it still has to sting. Happens to the best of them.

        5) St Mary's turned down chance to play in Bracket Busters because they didn't want to play four road games in a row, but now they're looking for a game to play after the WCC tournament. They could play USC, since the Trojans aren't allowed in the Pac-10 tournament. Trojans beat Gaels out in Hawai'i at a tournament in December.

        4) I'm guessing Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel will be happy/relieved when this nightmare of a season is over. His team is playing like it already is.

        3) Rams have lowered most ticket prices for next year, setting aside 6,500 seats for $250 season tickets, which is a terrific deal, since with a couple of preseason games, thats only $25 a ticket. I've sat in those seats, and it isn't a bad view of the action. New ownership will help the Rams.

        2) It has to be two hours (or more) of misery refereeing a game with Jim Calhoun on one sideline and Bob Huggins on other. Unless you're deaf. Calhoun got a technical foul in the first minute Monday night. Huggins got two in the last minute, and left the game 42 seconds early.

        1) Big winner in these Olympics might be the sport of curling, which has gotten a lot of attention this month; I'm thinking that Cheryl Bernard, the curvaceous Canadian curling captain, could get some endorsements after this month is over, expecially if her team can win a gold medal.

          NBA

          Tuesday, February 23

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Memphis Grizzlies (N/A)

Kobe Bryant is set to return to the lineup for the Lakers tonight after missing the last five games with an ankle injury, which he says has healed.

"It should be," Bryant told the Los Angeles Times after undergoing hours of treatment on the ankle. "If not, I'm firing everybody."

His teammates didn't miss a beat during his absence, winning four of those five SU, but they're not the same team without Kobe's 28 points per game.

Bryant's ordeal comes full circle in Memphis, where he first sustained the injury in the final game of the Lakers' brutal eight-game road trip on Feb. 1.

The Lakers lost that game 95-93 after Kobe passed up the potential game-winning shot to let Ron Artest try a trey at the buzzer. Clank!

Bryant won't make the same mistake twice and the word is he could have come back much sooner if the Lakers had needed him. Kobe wanted to wait until he was ready, and by ready he means dominant.

Expect him to turn in a strong performance against a team that is just 2-6 SU and ATS since beating the Lakers.

          Pick: Lakers

New Orleans Hornets at Cleveland Cavaliers (-11.5, 199)

The addition of Antawn Jamison has yet to pay off for the Cavs, who have lost three games in a row since trading Zydrunas Ilgauskus for the two-time All-Star.

Jamison scored 19 points in Sunday's loss to the Magic but defense has been the team's primary concern lately.

The Cavs have allowed opponents to break 100 in five of their last six outings. It previously took 22 games for teams to top triple digits five times against Cleveland.

Jamison gets his first start with the Cavs tonight against the Hornets, who have covered in five of their last six games. The Cavs are 1-5 ATS during that same span and have lost three of their last four against the Hornets.

With apologies to Ernie Banks, let's p(ar)lay two.

          Pick: Hornets/Over

Game of the day: Tennessee at Florida
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tennessee Volunteers at Florida Gators (-3, 136)

A key SEC East Division battle tips off Tuesday night at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville when Florida (19-8, 8-4) hosts Tennessee (20-6, 8-4) on ESPN.

            Rocky flop

A pre-season Top 10 team and the choice of many to challenge Kentucky for top honors in the SEC this season, Tennessee used a 16-3 spurt in the final seven minutes to put South Carolina away over the weekend.

Despite trailing at the half for the fourth straight contest, the victory marked the fifth straight year the Volunteers have reached the 20-win plateau under head coach Bruce Pearl.

Continually making roster adjustments, the Vols went with a four-guard lineup for the second straight game on Saturday. Pearl awarded Melvin Goins his third start of the season against South Carolina. Goins played only 16 minutes and failed to score.

F Wayne Chism, the team’s leading scorer (13.1 ppg) and rebounder (7.2 rpg), has played through ankle and hip injuries. Chism followed up a career high 30 points and 11 rebound effort against Georgia with 11 points and nine rebounds against the Gamecocks and appears to be coming into his own.

An Achilles heel for Tennessee this season has been its offense, especially on the road where it is averaging a mere 62 points per game.

The Vols edged Florida, 61-60 as 8-point favorites 24 days ago in Knoxville and have won eight of the last nine meetings in this series.

            Gator made

Florida lost three starters from last year’s 25-win team and was projected to finish in fourth place in the tough SEC East this season.

This year’s unit features an eight-man rotation, with all five starters averaging double-digits, led by freshman G Kenny Boynton (13.5 ppg).

After going 2-7 on the road last season, Florida improved to 5-3 on the highway this season. The Gators also went 6-0 in Thursday-Saturday turnarounds in conference play this campaign.

On the heels of back-to-back NIT appearances the last two years, the Gators’ 64-61 victory at Mississippi on Saturday likely made their way off the NCAA Tournament bubble. One victory in their final four games will ensure a winning conference record, a strong pre-requisite in the eyes of the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

Florida blew a seven-point lead with four minutes remaining at Ole Miss but made its free throws down the stretch to down the Rebels. Result improved the Gators to 6-0 against the SEC West this season.

C Vernon Macklin scored a career-high 22 points in Saturday's win. Florida is 12-2 when Macklin scores 10 or more points.

"I thought our guys definitely showed some resiliency and some toughness," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "We're not playing a lot of guys."

            By the numbers

According to cov.com statistical rankings, here is how each team ranks against 374 other teams in four pivotal stat categories:

            Offensive Field Goal Percentage:
            Florida (116) 44.4
            Tennessee (62) 45.9

            Defensive Field Goal Percentage:
            Florida (98) 41.8
            Tennessee (19) 39.1

            Rebound Margin:
            Florida (100) +2.3
            Tennessee (137) +1.2

            Against The Spread:
            Florida (104) 12-10
            Tennessee (218) 10-12-1

Florida’s soft spot continues to be its 3-point shooting. The Gators rank 11th in the SEC at 30.3 percent and they’ve made just 15 of their last 72 from beyond the arc.

Boynton, in particular, has struggled going 51-for-195 (26.2 percent) from 3-point range.

Tennessee struggles from the free throw line, converting 66.2 percent of its attempts. Florida cans 70.9 percent of its tosses from the stripe.

            Coaches’ corner

Our history book tells us the Gators are 84-26 at home in conference play under Donovan.

The Vols are 22-16 on the SEC road under Pearl, including 4-1 at Florida.

When playing off an upset win, Donovan is 18-9 straight up and 11-13-1 against the spread. In these same games against .720 (team winning percentage) or greater opposition, Billy’s boys are 11-3 SU and 9-4-1 ATS.

In his college career as a head coach, Pearl is 113-41 SU and 85-64 ATS in conference games, including 18-10 ATS as a dog and 13-4 ATS against foes off an underdog win.

            Trendencies

            • The Gators allow an average 62 ppg at home this year. Tennessee is 3-9-1 ATS this season in games in which it scores less than 75 points. Pearl is 36-66-3 ATS in his career in games where his team tallies fewer than 75 points.

            • Florida is 13-3 SU and 14-1-1 ATS in this series when the Gators enter the contest with a win percentage of less than .750 on the season.
