    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, February 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Pacers head to Dallas in search of a road victory over the Mavericks, while the Jayhawks get a visit from the Sooners.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are just five games on the NBA's schedule for Monday, with Chicago at Washington, Milwaukee at New York, Atlanta at Utah, Charlotte at the Clippers, and Indiana at Dallas. The Pacers (19-36 SU, 24-31 ATS) beat the Rockets 125-115 in Houston on Saturday, with Danny Granger pouring in 36 points. Indiana is just 7-21 (12-16 ATS) on the road. The Mavericks (35-21 SU, 23-33 ATS) beat Miami 97-91 at home on Saturday, their third straight win. Dirk Nowitzki led the way with 28 points in that contest, while Jason Kidd had 21 points and 11 assists.

As well, the top teams in action on the college basketball schedule for Monday are West Virginia (at Connecticut) and top-ranked Kansas (vs. Oklahoma). The Jayhawks (26-1 SU, 10-12-2 ATS) easily got past Colorado in their last game on Saturday, winning 94-74 at home behind 24 points from Xavier Henry. Tyshawn Taylor and Cole Aldrich each had 17 points in that win. The Sooners (13-13 SU, 9-14 ATS) were thumped 83-68 at home by Kansas State on Saturday. Tommy Mason-Griffin had 16 points for Oklahoma, which has lost four games in a row.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the Olympic men's hockey tournament gets a day off on Monday. The qualification round of the event will be staged on Tuesday, with quarterfinal matchups on tap for Wednesday, and the semifinals set for Friday. The Bronze Medal Game will be played Saturday, while the Gold Medal Game is on Sunday.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Charlotte Bobcats vs. Los Angeles Clippers: Clippers guard Baron Davis (back) is listed as questionable.

Lines to keep an eye on

Milwaukee Bucks vs. New York Knicks: The total opened at 204 and quickly jumped to as high 206 at some books. The Knicks have played in six straight overs but the Bucks are 5-1 on the under in that same span.

      Weather to watch

A weekend winter storm in the Midwest left lots of snow and ice and caused delays at many of the region's major airports. Road conditions also could create travel problems for teams in the area.

      Who's hot

Utah Jazz are 12-1 SU and 10-2-1 ATS in their last 13.

Chicago Bulls are 6-1 SU and ATS in their last seven.

Washington Wizards are 5-0 ATS in their last five.

      Who's not

L.A. Clippers are 1-6 SU in their last seven.

N.Y. Knicks are 1-9 SU in their last 10.

Kansas Jayhawks are 1-6 ATS in their last seven, all SU wins.

      Key stat

21 - The exact number of points the Kansas Jayhawks have been favored by in three of their last five games - all three ATS losses. They are favored by 21.5 points tonight against Oklahoma.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

L.A. Clippers guard Baron Davis has missed the last two games with a sore back but said he hopes to return for tonight's game against the Charlotte Bobcats. Davis is averaging 15.6 points per game but his 7.8 assists and ability to run the offense have been missed the most. Keep an eye on the line when a decision about Davis is made.

      Game of the day

      Atlanta Hawks at Utah Jazz

      Notable quotable

"The way I executed, the way I skied, is something I'll be proud of the rest of my life. I skied with 100 percent heart -- I didn't hold anything back. ... It's just awesome. There's nothing else to say."

-- American skier Bode Miller after coming back to win the gold medal in Sunday's super combined. He was in seventh place entering the slalom event.

      Tips and notes

-- Last week's trades didn't go over well in the Clippers' locker room. Chris Kaman criticized the decision to trade Marcus Camby for Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake and to swap Al Thornton and Sebastian Telfair for Drew Gooden. The new lineup resulted in their first win in seven games Saturday, but how long before the losing attitude rubs off on the new blood?

-- Jim Calhoun's return from a medical leave is starting to show on UConn, which fell from a top 10 team to a Big East bottom-feeder during his absence. The Huskies upset Villanova on the road and routed Rutgers last week, covering by an average of 15 points per game. They get another shot at a top team against West Virginia, which is favored despite sleepwalking lately.

-- Austria boasts four of the world's top five ski jumpers but they bombed in Saturday's individual normal hill event. Olympic newcomer George Schlierenzauer took the bronze and the rest placed no better than eighth. The embarrased Austrians say they did not adjust well to a wind change, but they are much better equipped, trained - and now motivated - for today's large hill format.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Washington Wizards (2, 199.5)

Both of these teams were active in the trade market the week of the deadline.

The Bulls added two valuable scorers off the bench (Hakim Warrick and Flip Murray) and all it cost them was a shooting guard who lost his stroke (John Salmons) and a knucklehead who regularly pissed off the coaching staff (Tyrus Thomas).

Chicago, with all of its new players in the lineup, cruised to a blowout win over the Sixers on Saturday. The Bulls notched 26 assists compared to just four turnovers, good for franchise record for fewest TO’s in a game.

''I was pleased with the way they shared the ball,'' coach Vinny Del Negro told the Chicago Sun-Times. ''Our ball movement was as good as it has been all year. The new guys are getting a feel for everything. We did a good job defensively. They're a difficult team to contain.''

The Wizards have become more competitive since Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison were shipped out of town. As Covers Expert Ted Sevransky pointed out in his weekly hoops column, Washington’s new lineup is just as – and maybe even more – potent offensively.

The Bulls have been a great bet on the road since January but they should have their hands full against the new-look Wizards.

        Pick: Washington

Milwaukee Bucks at New York Knicks (-1, 206)

It didn’t take long for Knicks fans to fall in love with their newest starting shooting guard. Tracy McGrady told reporters shortly after the trade to New York was official that he wanted to stay with the club beyond this season and would take a pay cut to make that happen.

Then he went out Saturday night and posted 26 points on 10 of 17 shooting in a losing effort against the Thunder. Some fans wonder whether the Knicks can be respectable the rest of the year with McGrady leading the charge.

It’s probably best not to get too excited, Knicks fans.

While McGrady can still fill the hoop he’s not a player who can carry a team. Remember, this is the 2010 version of T-Mac, not the 2002 one.

The Bucks continue to rack up ATS wins and a big part of that has been their defensive effort. Expect Milwaukee to slow the pace at MSG on Monday.

        Pick: Under

Game of the day: Atlanta Hawks at Utah Jazz
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Utah Jazz (-5.5, 197.5)

Led by high-scoring Joe Johnson and the emergence of Al Horford, who scored a career-high 31 points last week, the Atlanta Hawks are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference and on the heels of division-leading Orlando.

The Utah Jazz are sizzling. Heading into Sunday night's game Utah had won 12 of 13 and continued its climb up the Western Conference standings. The Jazz are suddenly a threat to catch Denver for the division title after spending a good part of the season outside the playoff picture.

          Trouble Brewing?

When the Jazz traded starting swingman Ronny Brewer to Memphis for a first-round draft pick last week they lost their leader in steals and minutes played. All-Star point guard Deron Williams, who is good friends with Brewer, was not happy with the move.

"You look at all the teams that are getting better around the West and we essentially got worse, if you ask me," Williams told NBA.com.

Brewer athleticism on the wing will be tough to be replaced but Jazz fans can’t forget how his poor shooting haunted the team in last year's playoffs.

Andrei Kirilenko has been the biggest beneficiary of the trade. The inconsistent forward is starting and playing with the same type of confidence he had when he first entered the league.

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan credited Kirilenko, who scored 22 points on Friday, as one of the biggest reasons the Jazz had won 16 of their last 18 games heading into Sunday.

"His play has been terrific," Sloan told Deseret News. "There's not any question about that. He's played more like Andrei played his first year or so with us."

          No rest for the weary

This is the third road game in the last four nights for the Hawks. On Friday, Atlanta coach Mike Woodson admitted he made a mistake by playing only six players the entire second half in a loss at Phoenix.

“I did something last night I haven’t done all year in terms of playing six guys,” he said. “I really thought we could beat those guys like that but it backfired on me because their second unit beat us.”

The Suns’ reserves took it to the Hawks in the fourth quarter. The Hawks’ backups - other than sixth man Jamal Crawford - watched the entire second half from the bench.

Despite going with the starters plus Crawford for those 24 minutes, the Hawks managed just 30 points, missed 20 of 33 shots and were beaten 27-17 on the boards.

          Did the starters get fatigued?

“I’m not sure,” Josh Smith said. “Normally we don’t get tired. We practice well with our conditioning. We just got outplayed, bottom line.”

The game was tied at 70-70 early in the fourth quarter before the collapse.

          Last meeting

These two teams have met once this season with the Hawks claiming a 96-83 win at Atlanta. The Hawks covered as 6-point favorites and the final score was well under the 207 over/under line.

Brewer didn't play well in the game, netting just four points, and Utah lost the game after committing 23 turnovers. The Hawks broke the game open outscoring the Jazz 37-17 in the third quarter.

          Straight-shooter

Atlanta is ranked fourth in the East in shooting percentage at 47.2 but has struggled shooting it lately.

It entered Sunday's game just hitting just 7 of 40 from three-point range in its last three games and when it hasn't shot 40 percent from the field as of late, it has lost.

          Diaper Dandy

Utah's Mehmet Okur missed Sunday's game after the birth of his son Friday. He is uncertain for Monday.

The Hawks are still hoping to land Zydrunas Ilgauskas if he succeeds in getting a buyout from the Wizards. Atlanta is worried about a lack of playoff experience on its roster.

The Hawks are relatively healthy after getting back Crawford and Zaza Pachulia from pre-All-Star Game injuries.

          Trend setting

The under is 6-0 in last six meetings at Utah and 4-0 overall.

The favorite is 13-3 ATS in last 16 games in this series.

The Jazz have also been very good when playing back-to-back nights. They are 5-1-1 ATS without a day’s rest.

The Jazz are 13-3-1 ATS in last 17 games against Eastern Conference teams and 24-8 ATS.

The Hawks are 0-4 ATS playing without a day’s rest.
