              Inside the Paint - Wednesday

After watching 10 games on Tuesday, the NBA keeps the ball rolling on Wednesday with another 11-game slate. Of the 22 teams playing tonight, 13 will be playing on zero days rest and that will be focus tonight. Even though most teams have been off for six days due to the All-Star break, you can find tendencies for clubs playing their second game in two nights.
Let’s take a closer look at the games involving teams playing with no rest.

              Minnesota at Washington

The Wizards will start the second-half of the season with an overhauled roster and it could get more of a change if the team decides to ship Antwan Jamison out the door too. The new-look squad will host Minnesota on Wednesday, who was just blasted 108-85 by Detroit from The Palace of Auburn Hills. The Timberwolves now have to travel to D.C. in this spot on zero days rest and they’ve gone 3-11 SU and 7-7 ATS in back-to-back spots this season. Washington has covered seven of the last eight against the Wolves.

              Memphis at Toronto

If you’re looking for a back-to-back fade team tonight, then look at Memphis. The team has gone 1-11 SU and 4-8 ATS on zero days rest. And to make matters worse for the Grizzlies, Toronto has feasted on teams with no rest this year, going 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS. Total players should make a note that the ‘under’ has gone 8-2 in the previous 10 encounters between this pair.

              Chicago at New York

The Bulls ripped the Knicks by 33 points (118-85) at home on Tuesday and now the pair concludes their home-and-home set from Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. The Bulls (4-9 SU, 4-9 ATS) and Knicks (2-9 SU, 4-7 ATS) have both been solid go-against teams on zero days rest. This is another total to watch, since the ‘under’ has cashed in eight of the last 11.

              Miami at New Jersey

Maybe the All-Star break was good for New Jersey? It’s hard to argue since the Nets stunned the Bobcats 103-94 as 11-point road underdogs on Tuesday. Can the club win two in a row? That might be tough to argue, since the team has gone 0-13 SU and 4-8-1 ATS on zero days rest. And the Nets face a red-hot Miami team that has won and covered three in a row by double digits, including last night’s 105-78 win at Philadelphia. Before you wager heavy on the Heat, be weary that they have gone 3-8 SU and 4-7 ATS in back-to-back scenarios? New Jersey came up short to Miami (80-81) on Nov. 14 thanks to a Dwyane Wade buzzer-beater, but the team has covered six of the previous seven against the Heat. Make a note that New Jersey is 2-8 SU in its last 10, but it has helped gamblers to an 8-2 ATS mark over this span.

              Houston at Milwaukee

This might be the trap game of the night. The Rockets have a better record, yet the Bucks are laying points and they haven’t been favored over Houston since the 2006-07 season. And if you look at the Rockets, they haven’t been a good bet on zero days rest (7-6 SU, 4-9 ATS) for gamblers. Plus, Milwaukee has gone 7-1 both SU and ATS against opponents on no rest this season. Houston folded late at home against a surging Utah (95-104) in a game where it was outscored by 15 points in the last two quarters.

              Utah at New Orleans

After rallying past Houston (104-95) on Tuesday, the Jazz will try to win their 15th game in 17 tries on Wednesday in yet another road contest, this time at New Orleans. Utah won and covered its two previous trips to the Big Easy, which includes a 14-point victory (108-94) last season. The Jazz are 4-6 SU and 6-3-1 ATS on zero days rest this year.

              Phoenix at Dallas

Phoenix started the second-half of the season with a solid 109-95 win at Memphis last night, while Dallas folded at Oklahoma City (86-99). The Suns (4-8 SU, 4-8 ATS) and Mavericks (6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS) haven’t been solid wagers in back-to-back spots this year. Dallas gets the series trend in this spot, since the home team has won three straight and eight of the last 10 in this series. The ‘over’ has gone 7-3 over this span. However, make a note that Dallas is 0-18 in its last 18 as a home favorite. Will the trend be busted tonight? Watch it live on ESPN at 9:00 p.m. EST.

              Atlanta at L.A. Clippers

Atlanta will start its four-game road trip to the West Coast on Wednesday against the Clippers, who will be playing its second game in two nights. Los Angeles has gone 4-10 SU and 6-7-1 ATS on zero days rest this season and they’re coming off a disappointing 109-87 loss at Portland on Tuesday. This pair recently met on Feb. 3 in Atlanta and the Hawks escaped with a 103-97 over the Clippers but failed to cover as 9 ½-point favorites.

              Sacramento at Golden State

Sacramento and Golden State both began the second-half of the season with losses to Boston (92-95) and the L.A. Lakers (94-104) respectively. On a positive note, the Kings and Warriors covered as underdogs in the defeats. Wednesday’s meeting will be the fourth and final one between the two teams this year. The home squad has won all three of the encounters and the ‘under’ has gone 2-1. The Kings are 5-8 SU and 4-7-2 ATS on zero days rest, while the Warriors have struggled to a 2-10 SU mark. However, Don Nelson’s team has gone 8-4 ATS in the same situation.

                  Wednesday's Wagers

There isn’t much time left for bubble teams looking for breakout wins. Likewise, candidates for high seeds can’t afford any more hiccups if they want to be slotted appropriately on Selection Sunday.

Miami probably needs to win out, starting with Wednesday’s home game against Duke. As for the Blue Devils, they are pushing toward an ACC regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

Texas and Missouri will be looking to improve their respective profiles when they collide in a key Big 12 matchup. Then later on the West coast, bettors have a WAC showdown on ESPN2 between La. Tech and Utah St. Let’s break down these contests and also tackle a few other topics.

                  **Duke at Miami**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Duke as an eight-point favorite. As of early this afternoon, most books had adjusted the Blue Devils to seven-point 'chalk' with a total of 138.

--Since losing at North Carolina St. on Jan. 20, Duke (21-4 straight up, 16-8 against the spread) has won six in a row against ACC foes, compiling a 5-1 spread record in the process. Of course, there was a loss at Georgetown on Jan. 30, but the Blue Devils are now 9-2 in ACC play with a 1 ½-game edge over Maryland, Wake Forest and Va. Tech in the conference standings.

--Mike Krzyzewski’s team was dominant in Saturday’s showdown against Maryland, capturing a 77-56 home win as a 9 ½-point ‘chalk’ at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Brian Zoubek erupted for 16 points, 17 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for the winners. Jon Scheyer added a game-high 22 points on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range.

--Miami (17-8 SU, 9-7-1 ATS) has lost seven of its last nine games to most likely fall out of consideration for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. Frank Haith’s team is coming off a 74-66 loss Saturday at Clemson, although it did hook up its backers with a winner as a 9 ½-point road underdog. The Hurricanes were undone by atrocious free-throw shooting (7-of-17 for 41.2%), while the Tigers went to the charity stripe and converted 25-of-31 attempts.

--UM has won 11 of its 12 home games this year, compiling a 2-2-1 spread record. This is the Hurricanes’ first game as home underdogs this year.

--Miami has won all 14 of its non-conference games, but the ‘Canes are an abysmal 3-8 in ACC play. They finish the regular season with four of their last five games at home.

--The ‘over’ is 8-6-1 overall for the ‘Canes, but they have seen the ‘under’ go 3-2 in their home games with a total.

--Duke has watched the ‘under’ cash in three straight games and go 13-11 overall this season.

--The ‘over’ has hit in six consecutive head-to-head meetings between these ACC adversaries.

--ESPN will provide the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

                  **Texas at Missouri**

--LVSC opened Missouri (18-7 SU, 11-8 ATS) as a one-point favorite. As of early this afternoon, most spots had the Tigers favored by 2 1/2 with a total of 153.

--Texas (20-5 SU, 9-12 ATS) stopped the bleeding momentarily by trashing Nebraska 91-51 Saturday as a 14-point home favorite. The Longhorns had lost five of their seven previous games before blasting the Cornhuskers. Freshman guard Avery Bradley busted loose for a game-high 25 points, while Damion James produced 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

--Mike Anderson’s squad dropped a heartbreaker Saturday at Baylor, as the Bears captured a 64-62 victory. However, Missouri took the cash as a four-point road underdog. Zaire Taylor had a team-high 15 points in defeat.

--Missouri has won 15 of its 16 home games, posting a 7-4 spread record in the process.

--Texas is mired in a miserable 2-10 ATS slide.

--Missouri has won back-to-back games against the Longhorns, including a 69-65 win in Austin last season as a 4 ½-point road underdog. However, the ‘Horns are 9-2 ATS in the last 11 head-to-head encounters.

--The ‘under’ is 5-1-1 in the last six head-to-head meetings between these schools.

--The ‘over’ is 9-8 overall for the Tigers this year, 6-3 in their home assignments. Meanwhile, Texas has watched the ‘over’ cash at a 12-8 overall clip.

                  --Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

                  **Louisiana Tech at Utah State**

--LVSC opened Utah St. (20-6 SU, 14-8 ATS) as an eight-point ‘chalk.’ However, as of early this afternoon, the number was all the way up to 11 with a total of 136 1/2. Gamblers can take the Bulldogs to win outright for a plus-500 return (risk $100 to win $500).

--La. Tech (20-5 SU, 10-9-1 ATS) has been burning the pockets of its backers recently, compiling a 0-6-1 ATS record in its last seven games. The Bulldogs are off a 66-60 home win Saturday over Hawaii, as the Warriors easily took the cash as 15 ½-point underdogs.

--Utah St. has won 10 in a row, going 9-1 ATS during this span. The Aggies own a 13-1 SU record and an 8-3 ATS ledger this season. Their lone home loss came to St. Mary’s by a 68-63 count back on Dec. 5.

--Steve Morrill’s team is gunning for a share of the WAC regular-season title for the fourth straight season. The Aggies are 10-2 in league play, leading New Mexico St. (9-3) and La. Tech (8-3) by the slimmest of margins.

--Will either of these teams garner at at-large invite to the NCAA Tournament if it doesn’t win the WAC Tourney? Utah State’s chances are much better, as evidenced by its RPI rating of 43. Meanwhile, La. Tech has a RPI of 76 with just three of its wins coming against schools in the Top-100 RPI (Murray St., Nevada and Utah St.). In other words, La. Tech has 'no shot' at an at-large invite.

--La. Tech is 2-3 SU and 2-2-1 ATS as a road underdog. Meanwhile, Utah St. is 2-1 ATS as a single-digit home ‘chalk.’

--When these schools met in Ruston on Jan. 4, La. Tech cruised to an easy 82-60 victory as a 1 ½-point home favorite. Magnum Rolle paced the winners with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

--The ‘under’ is 11-9 overall for the Aggies, 5-5 in their home outings. Meanwhile, the ‘over’ is 9-7 overall for the Bulldogs.

--Utah St. will host Wichita St. at midnight Eastern late Saturday night in an intriguing BracketBuster matchup.

--ESPN2 will have television coverage at 11:05 p.m. Eastern.

                  **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Best BracketBuster Matchup: Siena at Butler, Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Eastern.

--Most books are listing Ohio St. as a three-point home favorite tonight vs. Purdue. These are two legit Final Four contenders and I think either squad is worth consideration at the future book. Both schools have 15/1 odds to win the national championship at Sportsbook.com.

--Northwestern is a seven-point home favorite tonight vs. Penn St. The Wildcats can improve to 7-7 in Big Ten play with a victory. They are still alive, albeit 'out' at this point, for their first NCAA Tournament berth in school history. The Big Ten Network will have the NW-PSU telecast at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.

--Notre Dame senior center Luke Harangody is "doubtful" tonight at Louisville. Harangody, who averages 24.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, is dealing with a knee injury that kept him out of Sunday's one-point home loss to St. John's. Most books are listing the Cardinals as 12-point home favorites.

--I was asked yesterday about an off-the-radar team to keep an eye on down the stretch that might not necessarily be playing in the postseason. My response was Georgia, which goes to Thompson-Boling Arena tonight to face Tennessee. The Vols will be in revenge mode after losing 78-63 to the Dawgs at Stegeman Coliseum on Jan. 23. LVSC opened UT as a 12 ½-point favorite and most books were using that same number as of early this afternoon. Georgia is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 games, getting outstanding play from Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins, who is third in the SEC in scoring and 10th in rebounding.

--UT’s Wayne Chism, who is nursing a bruised hip and a sprained ankle, did participate in Tuesday’s practice and will play tonight, according to VolQuest.com. However, Cameron Tatum (ankle) is out vs. UGA.

--Best wishes to Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
