    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, February 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kansas plays on the road against Texas A&M, UConn meets Villanova, and the NBA and NHL take the night off.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

It'll be top-ranked Kansas taking on Texas A&M at Reed Arena on Monday night in the best game on the college basketball schedule. The Jayhawks (24-1 SU, 10-11-1 ATS) didn't have much trouble with Iowa State in their last game on Saturday, pulling away for a 73-59 victory. Xavier Henry was good for 16 points in that contest for Kansas, while Cole Aldrich grabbed 12 rebounds. The Aggies (18-6 SU, 12-8 ATS) slipped past Texas Tech 67-65 on Saturday. B.J. Holmes scored 18 points for Texas A&M in that victory , and Donald Sloan had 14 points.

The other marquee team in action on the college basketball schedule for Monday is Villanova, which plays host to Connecticut. The Wildcats (22-2 SU, 16-7 ATS) cruised to a 92-81 win over Providence on Saturday, with Corey Fisher and Scottie Reynolds each scoring a game-high 22 points for Villanova in that contest. The Huskies (14-11 SU, 9-14 ATS) couldn't get much offense going against Cincinnati in their Saturday outing, as they fell 60-48. Kemba Walker had 14 points for UConn in that defeat, while Jerome Dyson was good for 13 points.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Monday, February 15

      Lines off the board

South Carolina State at Morgan State

      Jackson State at Texas Southern

Lines to keep an eye on

Virginia at Maryland: The Terps opened as 8-point favorites and that number quickly jumped to 8.5. Maryland has covered eight of their last 10 games.

Kansas at Texas A&M: The Jayhawks opened as 7.5-point favorites and climbed to 8 right out of the box. The total opened at 143 and fell to 142.5.

      Weather to watch

Parts of the South that rarely see snow are expecting the white stuff for the second time in three days. It doesn't take much to postpone games in that area of the country so keep an eye on the weather for updates.

      Who's hot

Villanova is 11-1 SU in their last 12.

Maryland is 8-2 ATS in their last 10.

      Who's not

Connecticut is 1-5 SU and ATS in their last six.

Youngstown State is 1-9 SU in their last 10.

      Key stat

4 - The number of drivers who have won the Daytona 500 and gone on to win the championship in the same year. Richard Petty did it four times, Cale Yarborough did it twice, Lee Petty did it first (1959) and Jeff Gordon did it last (1997). Sunday's winner, Jamie McMurray, is a 150-to-1 longshot to win the 2010 Sprint Cup title.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Louisiana-Monroe guard Tony Hooper has missed the Warhawks' last two games with an ankle injury but is questionable to return tonight. The senior is averaging 11.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and will be sorely needed for tonight's game key conference game against Arkansas State.

      Game of the day

Kansas Jayhawks at Texas A&M Aggies

      Notable quotable

"No, no, no, no, no. I don't think I can bear that anymore. I'm just happy with this third one. This is the last one."

-- New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson after winning his third NBA Slam Dunk Challenge when asked if he would return for a four-peat.

      Tips and notes

Delays in the downhill has been an embarrassment for the Vancouver Olympics, but it may result in more medals for the host country when the men start today. Whistler was removed from the World Cup circuit after three events were canceled for slushy conditions in the 1990s, so Canadians Manuel Osborne-Paradis, Robbie Dixon and Erik Guay have the most experience on these slippery slopes.

There's no place like home, especially if you hang your hat in Hawaii. The Warriors would have a winning record if they stayed on the island, but they are 0-7 on the mainland entering tonight's game at New Mexico State. Adding to its road woes, Hawaii lost its sixth straight at Louisiana Tech on Saturday in a rare Southern snowstorm.

Tennessee State's season appeared to go from bad to worse last week when four players, including leading scorer Josh Sain, were dismissed from the team for academic reasons. However, the Tigers have won two straight since the move, including an upset of defending OVC champion Austin Peay. They host in-state rival Tennessee Tech tonight.

        Monday six-pack
Some notes from the triple OT Fullerton-Northridge marathon Saturday night at the Matadome in Northridge.

-- Fullerton was 44-61 from foul line, most FTs I've ever heard of one team taking in one game.

-- 11 guys fouled out, a ridiculous number. Five Titans, six Matadors. Three guys who didn't start fouled out. Overall, 75 fouls were called.

-- Matadors' Kenny Daniels was 9-20 from floor, 7-9 from line, with five turnovers, 10 rebounds and only one assist. He didn't start.

-- Three Fullerton starters played 44+ minutes; two Northridge subs played 30+ minutes-- both had double digit rebounds.

-- Imagine losing 113-112 and having two starters not score? Matadors led by 12 at half and still lost.

-- Northridge led by 3 with 0:05 left in third OT; they fouled Fullerton kid on purpose- he makes first, misses second, Fullerton gets rebound, puts ball in and gets fouled, then hits game-winning free throw. There is no perfect way to defend end-game situations.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

        13) Let me get this straight; most famous car race in the country had to be delayed for over two hours because the track had a pothole in it? Its one thing for the road I drive to work on to have potholes, but this is freakin' Daytona, hallowed racing ground. Someone has some answering to do......

        12) Daytona 500 had 21 different leaders, the most ever. It also went 20 extra miles, making it the longest Daytona 500 ever.

        11) Last nine Daytona 500's, nine different winners. Stuff happens here, unusual stuff that makes for excellent TV.

        10) When I turn on an event, and in the first minute the announcer says this: "I'm going to be interested to see what happens when this game gets competitive", I turn the event off and it doesn't get turned back on. That was Doug Collins on TNT at the NBA All-Star Game last night.

        9) Crowd at Cowboys' Stadium was 108,713, most people ever to watch a basketball game, if you want to that defense-less mess a game.

        8) The scoreboard at Jerry World is almost twice as long as the court.

        7) There were five SEC alumni in the All-Star Game, more than any other college conference. There were also six players who didn't go to college, five of whom started the game.

        6) Friend of mine scoffed at Chris Kaman being an All-Star, but then I realized that no MAC team has won an NCAA tournament game since Kaman led Central Michigan to a win over Creighton in 2003. Maybe he's a better player than we all think.

        5) Huge blow for Northern Iowa: center Jordan Eglseder was suspended for three games following a DUI arrest. Damaging blow, for sure.

        4) Northwestern came back from down 8 at the half to beat Minnesota in OT; Wildcats were 13-36 from arc, 11-24 on 2-point shots, 16-19 from the foul line. Hard to be consistently good taking so many 3-pointers.

        3) Oklahoma's leading scorer Willie Warren has mononeucleosis, is out for an indefinite period; Sooners lost by 21 at Oklahoma State without him.

        2) Golfer Paul Goydos looks a lot like Lou Piniella; lucky he doesn't have Piniella's temper, or we could have seen an epic meltdown when Goydos got a 9 on the par-5 14th hole when he was leading tournament Sunday.

        1) Good to see David Duval contending on Sunday; not often you see a guy lose his skills the way Duval lost his, then rebound to become good again. Golf needs a feel-good story like Duval, especially this season.

Game of the day: Jayhawks at Aggies
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas Jayhawks at Texas A&M Aggies (+8, 142.5)

Barring a season-ending collapse, Kansas (24-1, 10-0) has virtually locked up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks are also the leader in the clubhouse for the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Texas A&M (18-6, 7-3) is one of the hottest teams in the nation. The Aggies made a steady climb up the RPI rankings over the past three weeks highlighted by big wins over Missouri and Oklahoma. They’re coming off a win at Texas Tech on Saturday and are in second place in the Big 12 standings.

            Winning is a habit

Kansas’ only loss of the season came at Tennessee over a month ago and under strange circumstances. It was the first game after the Vols suspended four players for legal troubles involving drugs and a loaded gun. Tennessee came out inspired and pulled away down the stretch.

Since then Kansas has rolled over just about every team in its path. But the oddsmakers have been right on the Jayhawks during their roll. Kansas is 24-1 on the season but just 10-11-1 ATS.

You have to wonder how important this game is to Kansas after coach Bill Self said recently that he felt his team was actually stronger in 2008 when it won the national title because it went through a stretch where it lost three of five games in the middle of the Big 12 slate.

“I love our record,” Self said. “But the objective is not to have great record. The objective is to have a great team.”

Then again, Texas A&M is only three games behind the Jayhawks in the conference standings and most believe that Kansas’ most impressive wins this season were on the road at Temple, Texas and Kansas State.

            Rolling Aggies

The Aggies have rallied from double-digit deficits four times this year. Coach Mark Turgeon said his team is riding the best wave in his three years at the school. The Aggies have won four straight and six of their last seven setting up this monstrous test. You can be Reed Arena will be a madhouse tonight.

"Are you kidding me?" he said. "To play the No. 1 team on your home court when you have a lot of confidence is something you dream about. We know we'll get Kansas' best shot. It should be a heck of a game."

            Take a number

Kansas leads the Big 12 in just about every offensive category. It averages 83 points a game (fourth in nation) and has a winning margin of just over 20 points.

Turgeon is worried about two things: his team’s defense and free throw shooting. Both were bad again on Saturday against Texas Tech.

“We are slipping a little defensively,” Turgeon said. “I think we have spent so much time getting ready for what the other team does we haven’t been doing all the little things that make us what we are defensively, and (last week gave) us time for us to go back. We gave up a lot of layups the other day and a couple of wide-open 3s in transition, and that’s not good basketball.”

Texas Tech hit 7-of-18 from 3-point range Saturday and the Aggies struggled again from the free throw line shooting just 59 percent but those things are not coming back to bite them in their hot streak. The Aggies are ranked 278th in the nation in free throw shooting.

            Trend setting

Texas A&M has beaten the spread in its last four games. It opened the season with a five-game ATS winning streak.

The Aggies went under the total last game after going over the mark four straight times.

Texas A&M is 13-0 straight up at home this season.

Kansas is 7-1 straight up on the road this season and 4-1 ATS in last five games at A&M.

Kansas loves Big Monday. The Jayhawks are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 Monday games.

The Jayhawks failed to cover Saturday and are 9-3-1 in their last 13 games after failing to cover.
