    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, February 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NHL heads into its Olympic break, the NBA plays its All-Star Game, and the Sprint Cup Series stages the Daytona 500.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The 2010 NBA All-Star Game tips off at 8:00pm ET on Sunday night at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, with the Western Conference missing one of its top guns. Star Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is nursing a sprained ankle and has decided to skip the All-Star Game this year; he's being replaced on the West's roster by Mavs guard Jason Kidd. However, the Western Conference is still pegged as the 1.5-point favorite to get the win on Sunday night, with the game's total at 261 points.

As well, there are three games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Sunday, with No. 13 Ohio State at Illinois, No. 7 Georgetown at Rutgers, and Louisville at No. 2 Syracuse. The Orange (24-1 SU, 14-6 ATS) have won 11 games in a row heading into Sunday's outing at the Carrier Dome, most recently knocking off Connecticut 72-67 on Wednesday night. The Cardinals (15-9 SU, 7-12 ATS) fell 74-55 to St. John's in their Thursday matchup.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League wraps up its pre-Olympic schedule on Sunday with six games: Tampa Bay at the Rangers, Nashville at Pittsburgh, Vancouver at Minnesota, Ottawa at the Islanders, Anaheim at Edmonton, and Chicago at Columbus. The Blackhawks and Blue Jackets last met in Columbus back on January 16, with Chicago rolling to a 6-5 road victory. Jonathan Toews scored twice for the Blackhawks in that win, while Patrick Kane picked up three assists.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series season begins on Sunday with the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. The Vegas oddsmakers like pole-sitter Mark Martin to grab his first win on the track on Sunday, as he's been pegged as the 13/2 race favorite. Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon are next on that odds list at 7/1 and 8/1, respectively, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. (17/2) and Kurt Busch (9/1) rounding out the Vegas Top 5. Tony Stewart (11/1) and Carl Edwards (12/1) are getting longer odds, with Series champ Jimmie Johnson pegged at 14/1 to win.

Bettor's best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Sunday, February 14

      Line off the board

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers – Tampa Bay played Friday night. Michael Del Zotto (sternum) left Friday’s game with a laceration and is questionable.

Line to keep an eye on

The total in the All-Star game has moved from an opener of 261 to 262.5. The spread has dropped a half-point at most shops from 1.5 to 1 in favor of the West but a few places on the board are offering a PK.

      Weather to watch

The men’s downhill skiing event scheduled for Saturday was postponed because of slushy conditions. The race has been rescheduled for 10:30 a.m. (PT) on Monday.

Rain and warm weather have created less than ideal skiing conditions for the slopes at Whistler. Taking skiers out of their normal comfort zone on the mountain could open the door for some underdogs to break through.

Showers are expected throughout Sunday in Vancouver with temperatures in the 40s and humidity in the 90 percent range.

      Who’s hot

The Ducks have won five of their last six games, earning 4.12 units on the moneyline.

Illinois has taken five straight games (4-1 ATS) and won two straight as 1.5 and 9-point underdogs.

      Who’s not

Louisville is 4-5 SU in its last nine games and 2-7 ATS during that stretch.

The Blackhawks have been nothing less than -136 favorites in their last five games (2-3), losing 4.39 units during that span.

      Key stats

260.1 – Average total of points scored in the NBA All-Star games since the 1999 lockout. No team has scored less than 100 points during that span and the total for Sunday’s game opened at 261. The lowest scoring All-Star game was 154 points in 1953 while the highest was 303 points in the 1987 game that went to overtime.

6 – Number of times the All-Star game has gone into overtime. The last time it happened was in Michael Jordan’s last All-Star appearance in 2003 when the West defeated the East in double-overtime, 155-145.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Luke Harangody will miss Sunday’s game versus St. John’s after the Notre Dame star player sustained a bone bruise in his knee during Thursday’s loss at Seton Hall. Harangody leads the Irish with a 24.1 points per game average and pulls down 10.0 boards per contest.

      Game of the day

      East vs. West (-1, 262.5)

      Notable quotable

"Just to be able to be an All-Star year in and year out, that's a special feeling, but the fact that it's in Dallas is kind of a bittersweet thing. Sweet because I get to play in front of my home crowd and it's bitter because everybody wants tickets."

-- Raptors forward Chris Bosh talking about playing the All-Star game in his hometown.

      Tips and notes

      - Pace of play is big when handicapping basketball totals. In the last five ASGs, the average number of possessions is 241 per game. More scoring opportunities arise in the ASG but the efficiency is not much higher than a regular season games. An average of 107.4 points per 100 possessions has been scored, opposed to 104.1 in the regular season.

      - Depth perception and sightlines can affect shooting when playing basketball outside of a normal arena. The All-Star game will be played at Cowboys Stadium in front of a crowd of 90,000-plus. Scoring has not been affected in the two previous games played there with Texas-North Carolina (100-93) sailing over the total of 152 and the Rookie-Sophomores (140-128) going over 242.

      - Chris Bosh and Deron Williams will both be playing in front of their home crowds Sunday as Dallas natives. Bosh said it’s a “special feeling” to be playing the All-Star game just 20 minutes away from his former high school. Williams and Bosh might have some extra motivation in the game and both getting +1500 odds to win the MVP.

        Sunday six-pack

Top minor league prospect of each team in NL Central, according to the Sporting News baseball magazine, which is on newsstands everywhere.

-- Cardinals, Shelby Miller, RHP-- St Louis dealt lot of prospects to acquire Holliday/DeRosa- this is guy has potential as power pitcher.

-- Cubs, Josh Vitters, 3B-- Hit only .238 in high Class A LY, has struck out 129 times with only 29 walks in his minor league career.

-- Brewers, Alcides Escobar, SS-- Played well enough in brief trial that they traded JJ Hardy to Minnesota. Has excellent speed.

-- Reds, Todd Frazier, 3B/OF-- Former Little League WS star hit .304 in brief stint in AAA last year; is versatile player, line drive hitter.

-- Astros, Jiovanni Mier, SS-- Signed with USC to play baseball but the farm-poor Astros pried him away. Hit .276 in Rookie League LY.

-- Pirates, Pedro Alvarez, 3B-- Justified $6.35M bonus by hitting .288 with 27 homers in minor leagues LY. Needs to get in better condition.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday

        13) Game of the day was out west in Northridge, when Fullerton scored four points in last 0:04 of the third OT, after Northridge committed a foul on purpose while up 3, and the Titans won 113-112 at the Matadome, in a game where the home team led by 12 points at halftime.

        12) UConn laid an egg in Jim Calhoun's return to the bench, losing 60-48 at home to Cincinnati; Huskies shot 34.6%, 3-15 from the arc. Ugly.

        11) Cal was down 11 at half at home to Washington State; not only did they rally to beat the Cougars, they covered as 10.5-point home favorites with an 86-70 win, outscoring Wazzu 52-25 in second half.

        10) Pac-10 defies belief at times; witness Oregon State 63, Arizona 55.

        9) Washington's first road win of season was Stanford's first home loss in Pac-10 play; as talented as Huskies are, its about time.

        8) Solid coaching job by Mark Turgeon at Texas A&M, as Aggies pulled out another close win, 67-65 at Texas Tech. Donald Sloan is just terrific as a glue player; good defender, solid rebounder, makes teammates better.

        7) Texas took some frustrations out on Nebraska, pounded Cornhuskers 91-51 in Austin; Longhorns were 11-23 from arc, +20 on boards and held struggling Nebraska to 28.1% from the floor.

        6) Temple shot 68.6% from floor, was 2-2 from foul line, 6-6 from arc in an amazingly easy 78-56 win over Rhode Island; when team shoots 69% from floor and only takes two foul shots, its safe to assume the defense could stand to be a little more physical.

        5) Conference USA Tournament is going to be great; Marshall won 81-74 at UAB; those two teams, with Memphis, Tulsa, UTEP could all easily win the tournament. That tourney and the A-14 tourney should be lot of fun next month. Seven teams could easily win A-14 tournament.

        4) Rick Majerus' Saint Louis Billikens were down 33-19 against Dayton at home at halftime, but won 68-65 in double OT. Dayton was just 10-20 on foul line, 1-13 from arc. Billikens made 11-27 from the arc. Billikens are 17-8, 7-3 and quietly are contenders in an underrated league.

        3) Portland beat St Mary's 80-75 in OT, tying Gaels for second place in WCC, which is huge, since top two teams get extra bye in WCC tourney.

        2) Weber State beat Northern Colorado 81-76 in meeting of the two best teams in Big Sky Conference; Weber looks good for the top seed now.

        1) Cornell won 48-45 at Princeton, tying Tigers for top spot in Ivy, with Harvard only a game behind in third. Ivy League doesn't have tournament after regular season, so the regular season means everything.

What bettors need to know: NBA All-Star Game

Eastern Conference at Western Conference (-1, 261.5)

On Valentine’s Day, the East and West tip off in the NBA’s 59th All-Star Game. Although the West has had the upper hand recently, the East holds a 35-23 advantage in the series.

The game, known for its high scores and lack of defensive play, will be held in Arlington’s Cowboy Stadium. The new venue is expected to attract more than 90,000 fans this Sunday, which would easily eclipse NBA attendance records for a single game.

          An exhibition

Most professional gamblers don’t touch this game since it is usually not taken very seriously and treated by most of its participants as an exhibition, especially when compared to the all-star games of other professional sports.

The game’s line is solely set on public perception and not on the players’ on-court performance.

"Typically (the NBA All-Star Game) is a coin flip game,” said Rob Gillespie, President of Bodog. "(Setting the line) has a lot to do with public opinion…We will try and gauge where the public will be and keep the bets small to start.”

Value could be found in the total since the game is normally a high-scoring affair (see second “trend” below). However, a problem with betting the over is the total is usually high and the public is more often than not wagering on it rather than the under.

          Size matters

A popular viewpoint on why the West has the edge in recent All-Star Games is its superiority in height over the East.

The size advantage for the West was certainly evident in last year’s meeting. The East had a difficult time in matching up and was blown out, 146-119.

The lopsided size difference is somewhat evident again for this year’s game. The West’s roster has seven of its 12 players at 6-foot-9 or taller while the East has just five players at that height.

          Kobe’s out

It was announced Thursday night Kobe Bryant, a three-time All-Star Game MVP, would not play in Sunday’s game because of an ankle injury. Along with Chris Paul and Brandon Roy, Bryant is the third West player missing the game due to injury.

The East’s Allen Iverson also won’t play because one of his children is ill.

Kobe’s injury does give the game more hometown flavor. Dallas’ Jason Kidd replaces Bryant while Dirk Nowitzki, another Mavericks player, could now move into the starting lineup.

“Dirk's presence in the starting lineup should certainly help stir up some local buzz for an event that's going to need plenty of it with the weather wreaking havoc on the travel plans of everyone trying to attend,” said Sekou Smith of NBA.com.

          Trends

The West has won five of the last eight meetings over the East since 2002. The West’s average margin of victory during that time is by 15.4 points while the East’s winning average is by only six points.

In the last seven All-Star Games, the total has averaged 266 points with five of the seven games totaling 262 points or more.

This season, Western Conference teams are 166-131 SU (56 percent) against the Eastern Conference and seven of the NBA’s top 10 ATS teams are in the West (Oklahoma City, Utah, Golden State, Portland, Memphis, Phoenix, and Minnesota).

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at New York Islanders (+130, 5.5)

The Senators are still riding the momentum of their biggest win of the season, out-gunning the powerful Washington Capitals 6-5 at home Thursday night.

While Ottawa managed to keep the Caps at bay in that contest, goaltender Brian Elliott gave up a few soft goals that allowed Washington to get back into the game.

Elliott turned away 19 shots for his 21st win of the year, but revealed a chink in his armor as the Capitals scored just about every time they went high on the young goalkeeper.

New York falls short in the firepower department when compared to Washington. In fact, the Isles have been an under bettor’s dream in recent weeks. They’re averaging just 1.6 goals per game in their past 10 contests and have scored one goal or fewer in half of those outings.

However, New York has pushed the Senators to the limit in their two meetings this season, losing both games 3-2 in additional frames. With Ottawa away from Scotiabank Place and coming off a tough game against Detroit Saturday, the Islanders are in a prime spot to cool off one of the NHL’s hottest teams.

                Pick: New York

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers

Friday’s 3-2 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins came at a cost for the New York Rangers.

They watched leading scorer Marian Gaborik leave the ice after playing just four minutes. Gaborik was nursing a cut on his right finger following a collision with goaltender Henrik Lundqvist in practice earlier in the week.

The Rangers also lost defenseman Michael Del Zotto, who ran into Penguins star forward Evgeni Malkin along the boards and fell on a skate. The team told reporters Del Zotto suffered a “significant laceration” on his abdomen.

"I tried not to look at it. Apparently it was pretty gross," Del Zotto told the New York Daily News. "I saw the gauze after; it was a lot of gauze, a lot of blood. I just tried not to look. "

A shorthanded New York squad faces a Tampa Bay team that had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday and is coming off a game against the Islanders Saturday. The Lightning has won seven of its last 10 games heading into the weekend.

                Pick: Tampa Bay
