    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, February 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA heads into its All-Star break, while West Virginia meets Pittsburgh, and the Penguins get a visit from the Rangers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are no NBA games on the schedule for Friday as the league begins its All-Star break. The night instead features a pair of events: the All-Star Celebrity Game, and the Rookie Challenge. Saturday will then have the H.O.R.S.E. competition and the Skills Challenge, with the game itself all set for Sunday night.

That means the highlight hoops action on the Friday schedule is the only college basketball game of the night involving ranked teams: No. 5 West Virginia at No. 25 Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers (19-4 SU, 9-13 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from an 82-75 loss to Villanova in their last game. Darryl Bryant scored 15 points for West Virginia in that home contest, while Kevin Jones had 11 points and eight rebounds. The Panthers (18-6 SU, 11-8-2 ATS) cruised to a 77-53 win over Robert Morris last time out, with Ashton Gibbs scoring 20 points on the night.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are seven games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with Montreal at Philadelphia, Nashville at New Jersey, Vancouver at Columbus, Toronto at St. Louis, Atlanta at Minnesota, Phoenix at Colorado, and the Rangers at Pittsburgh. The rival Rangers and Penguins last met on January 25, with Pittsburgh picking up a 4-2 road victory. Minor-league callup Chris Conner had two goals for the Pens in that win, Evgeni Malkin and Pascal Dupuis had one goal apiece, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves. Artem Anisimov scored twice for the Rangers.

Bettor's best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Friday, February 12

      Lines off the board

Nashville Predators at New Jersey Devils – Zach Parise (upper body) missed Wednesday’s game and is probable. Bryce Salvador (upper body) left last game but is expected to play. Marcel Goc (upper body) missed the last two games and is questionable.

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins – Marian Gaboric (leg) was cut by a skate during Tuesday’s practice and is doubtful. Marc Staal (flu) is questionable. Maxime Talbot (groin) has missed the last two games and is questionable.

Line to keep an eye on

The Rookie-Sophomore game spread and total have both increased a half point at some shops since opening. The Sophs opened as 11.5-point faves, currently 12, and the total was posted at 245 and now sits at 245.5

      Weather to watch

There is a 30 percent chance of showers in the morning for the second round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Very mild wind is expected and the sun is expected to come out from behind the clouds around noon.

      Who’s hot

The Sophomores have won seven straight versus the Rookies and are 8-2 SU in the series since 1999.

Cornell has won nine of its last 10 games and is 5-2 ATS during that stretch.

      Who’s not

Dartmouth has dropped five consecutive games and four straight ATS.

The Rangers have lost eight of their last 10 games.

      Key stat

250.6 – Total points per game averaged during the last three Rookie Challenge matchups. The Sophomores haven’t scored fewer than 122 points in the last seven games of this event.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Derrick Rose has been excused from the Rookie Challenge game during All-Star Weekend because he is already participating in the Skills Challenge and the actual All-Star game. Rose only managed four points in last year’s game on 1-of-5 shooting with seven assists. Rose’s replacement for the game will be Golden State Warrior Anthony Morrow, who led the league in 3-point percentage last year and is averaging 12.3 ppg this season.

      Game of the day

West Virginia Mountaineers at Pittsburgh Panthers (+1.5, 126.5)

      Notable quotable

“I’ll do what I always do All-Star weekend: chill out.”

-- Said Lakers forward Lamar Odom, who has never been selected as an All-Star during his 11-year NBA career.

      Tips and notes

      - When the Lakers come back from the All-Star break, they might have a new starting five. Phil Jackson is contemplating starting Lamar Odom over Andrew Bynum as assistants are “pushing” him in that direction. Odom has averaged 17.0 points and 14.3 rebounds in Bynum’s absence and said that starting wouldn’t matter to him.

      - Nine of the 15 MVPs in the Rookies-Sophomes game have been guards. Only one true center, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, has won the award. Swingman Michael Beasley is the favorite to win in 2010 at +400 odds while rookie Tyreke Evans comes in as the runner-up at +450. Jason Richardson was the last rookie to win the award in 2002.

      - The United State has collected the second-most Winter Olympic medals with 216 total. The U.S. is getting +465 odds to win the medal count at this year’s Games. Germany has won 160 medals and is the favorite to take the most at +135 while Canada (119 all-time medals) has been given +225 odds.

      - America won nine gold medals at the 2006 Winter Games. The USA’s over/under total of 9.5 gold medals for this year has incurred heavy action on the under and sits at -210. The swing could be attributed to the injury of skier Lindsey Vonn who aimed to earn five medals but was injured last week and may not particpate.

        Friday six-pack

Some baseball knowledge to think about, with spring training not too far away.......it starts late next week in Florida and Arizona.

-- New outdoor ball park in Minnesota has dimensions of 339 down the left field line, 404 to center, 328 to right. Not a hitter's park.

-- Arizona's Conor Jackson played a physical therapist in soap opera General Hospital LY; his dad was one of stars of JAG.

-- Orioles were 7th in MLB in batting average, 17th on-base percentage and 16th in runs scored. 28th in wins.

-- Highest paid guy on Marlins LY; Hanley Ramirez at $5,500,000.

-- Mets were 5th in batting average LY, 26th in slugging, 25th in runs.

-- Lou Piniella (840) has most wins of any manager in Seattle history; Jim Lefebvre (233 from 1989-91) is still second on the list.

        ************************************************** *********************

Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

        13) I like NASCAR a little, I'll watch some of the race Sunday, but good lord, I don't give a rat's ass about Danica Patrick. ESPN has to stop with the barrage of publicity; its going to be worse for the World Cup in June.

        12) ESPN mentioned Rick Pitino and the Nets in same sentence so many times Thursday that his Cardinals went out and played like the Nets, not scoring in first 6:30 of a hideous 74-55 loss at St John's.

        11) I'm not overly big on this Bracketology stuff, but its interesting to note that ESPN's Joe Lunardi had Louisville as last team in tournament going into Thursday's games, with five other Big East teams first out.

        10) Big East is only conference where its TV games are acoompanied by constant spiels of how great the league is. DePaul and Rutgers stink, and they're the reason Big East is third in conference rankings. Sixteen teams in one league is just too many.

        9) Good to see Jim Calhoun coming back to coach this weekend.

        8) Washington Huskies still don't have a win outside of Seattle.

        7) Morehead State lost at Eastern Illinois when they called a timeout they didn't have with 0:01 left during a wild scramble for the ball, when they led 75-74. EIU made both foul shots and stole an unlikely win.

        6) Stanford was down 15 at half at home to Washington State, rallied to beat Coogs 60-58; Cardinal is 5-0 at home in Pac-10 games.

        Elsewhere in the world.........
        5) Golfer Ross McGowan will take Eldrick Woods' place in Match Play tournament next week, if Woods opts not to play. Phil Mickelson won't be there, but someone's going to cash a very large check for winning.

        4) Kevin Durant scored 25+ points in his last 25 games, longest streak in NBA since Allen Iverson did it nine years ago.

        3) Bucks-Nets played in snowy New Jersey Wednesday; the announced crowd was 1,016 to which I ask, what were those 1,016 thinking?

        2) I'm surprised how little respect Eli Manning has with a lot of football fans I know; guy's won a Super Bowl, he plays every week, withstands the NYC media spotlight, but lot of Giants fans don't appreciate him.

        1) Rams have been sold to an auto parts magnate from Illinois who moved to this country from Pakistan when he was 10 years old. He is keeping the team in St Louis, which is smart. The dude is loaded. Good luck, sir.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: West Virginia at Pittsburgh
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Virginia Mountaineers at Pittsburgh Panthers (+1.5, 126.5)

In this week’s edition of our Friday game of the day, Pittsburgh has a chance to get a measure of revenge against West Virginia after losing to the Mountaineers on Feb. 3 in Morgantown.

              Down in the Pitts

Pittsburgh started the season 15-2 and rose as high as No. 11 in the polls. They have since lost four of their last seven, dropping games to Georgetown, Seton Hall, South Florida and West Virginia.

Their three wins during that stretch weren’t anything to write home about either – home victories over Seton Hall, St. Johns and Robert Morris who have a combined road record of 14-20.

              Unidentified flying objects

In Pitt's last meeting at West Virginia, the game was delayed several times due to unruly fan behavior. Mountaineer head coach Bob Higgins had to make an announcement over the loud speaker in an attempt to stop the Hillbillies from throwing objects on the court.

Even after that announcement, Pitt associate head coach Tom Herrion was hit on the left side of his face — inches below his eye — with a quarter thrown from the stands. You can bet that the fans of Pitt will be more than their usual vocal selves for this meeting with WVU on their home court.

"I think people will want to come out for this game because we lost down there and the way it was," Pittsburgh senior Jermaine Dixon said. "I'm sure people will want to come out and watch this game. With this being a rivalry game, it's kind of big. The loss down there is definitely fueling us for this game."

Peterson Events Center should be rocking to provide a little homecourt advantage for the Panthers who are 132-8 SU and 58-38-4 ATS in their last eight seasons at home with an average margin of victory of 15.3 ppg.

              Redemption game for Mountaineers

Villanova just handed West Virginia their fourth loss of the season and that ended a six-game winning streak for the Mountaineers.

That was a huge loss for West Virginia as it was just the second time in WVU's history that a Top 5 Mountaineer team faced a Top 5 opponent – the first being in December 1959 when No. 2 West Virginia faced No. 3 California.

The Mountaineers Big East title hopes took a big hit with that loss, now sitting two games behind Syracuse and Villanova.

West Virginia is 6-2 on the road this season. Their only two losses were at Purdue by 15 points and at Notre Dame by two points. They’ve won their other six road games by an average of 15.8 ppg and only one of those wins was by fewer than six points.

When bouncing back from their prior three losses this season, the Mountaineers are 3-0, winning by 34, 19, and eight points.

              Dixon line

Pitt guard Jermaine Dixon has been hampered by ankle, foot and finger injuries all season.

Last week was the first time this season Dixon practiced with the team every day. Since rejoining the team on a regular basis, the Panthers are 2-0 and Dixon is averaging 16.5 ppg.

“He's a different player and we're a different team when he practices. That's clear,” said coach Jamie Dixon. “It's not a good situation to play once or twice a week and not practice."

              Previous meeting

As mentioned above, these two met last Wednesday. West Virginia used a late run to get the convincing 19-point victory at home for its most lopsided victory over the Panthers in more than three decades.

In front of the third-largest crowd in WVU Coliseum history, Pitt never led and suffered its worst loss in 33 years in the basketball version of the Backyard Brawl.

Pittsburgh never led but they did cut the Mountaineers lead to just two points midway through the second half. Down 43-41 with 12 minutes to play, Pitt missed 14 of its next 15 shots and West Virginia outscored Pitt, 27-9, down the stretch to break open what had been a tight game between the two bitter rivals.

West Virginia also had a +12 edge in rebounding and held the Panthers to just 16-of-53 field goals (30.2 percent).

              Trends

Pittsburgh has won the last three meetings at home vs. the Mountaineers by 11, 1 and 14 points (2-1 ATS).

West Virginia is 4-2 ATS in the last 6 meetings of this series.

The Panthers are 7-3-1 ATS in conference games this season.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Philadelphia Flyers (-180, 5.5)

The Canadiens discovered the recipe for defeating the hottest team in the NHL – get a new GM.

Bob Gainey decided to step down from his GM post with Montreal on Tuesday and then the Habs promptly turned around and snapped the Capitals’ 14-game win streak Wednesday. It tied for the third-longest winning streak in league history.

The Habs were leading 5-2 in the third period but Washington tied the game with 18.4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

"I liked the way we reacted in overtime," said coach Jacques Martin. "After getting scored on with less than 20 seconds left, they never got a sniff in overtime."

Montreal held the Caps to two shots on goal during overtime and Tomas Plekanec converted the game-winner with eight seconds remaining in the extended period.

The Canadiens have taken the last three games in this series as well as the last two in Philly. Look for Montreal to parlay the momentum of knocking off the best team in the league into a road victory Friday.

                  Pick: Canadiens

Toronto Maple Leafs at St. Louis Blues (-140, 5.5)

A couple of league bottom-feeders square off Friday in what looks to be a toss-up type of game.

The Blues earned their first home win since Jan. 16 after defeating the Red Wings on Tuesday in a 4-3 shootout.

Paul Kariya netted two goals in the game and posted his first home goal since October of 2008.

"Get the win first, but it was nice to get that monkey off my back at home," said the veteran Kariya. "I don't know what happened there, but it's behind us. Hopefully, they start flooding now."

Kariya has a good change of opening the flood gates against the Maple Leafs - a team he has scored at least one point against in 12 consecutive games.

Toronto has dropped five straight on the road (2-12-2 last 16) and still may be in a somber state of mind since the passing of GM Brian Burke’s 21-year-old son last Saturday.

                  Pick: Blues
