    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, February 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kentucky meets Alabama, the Thunder take on the Trail Blazers, and the Nets try to avoid embarrassment against the Cavs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 11 games on its Tuesday night schedule, including New Jersey at Cleveland. The Nets and Cavaliers have combined for 45 wins so far this season - but New Jersey has just four of them. The Nets fell 99-92 in Detroit in their last game on Saturday, despite Devin Harris' team-high 21 points. The Cavaliers ran their winning streak to 11 games with a 113-106 home victory against New York on Saturday. LeBron James exploded for 47 points that night.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Tuesday: Minnesota at Philadelphia, Washington at Charlotte, Chicago at Indiana, Houston at Miami, Sacramento at New York, Atlanta at Memphis, Detroit at Milwaukee, Dallas at Denver, Utah at the Clippers, and Oklahoma City at Portland. The Thunder picked up their fifth straight win on Saturday night, getting the 104-95 victory over Golden State behind 29 points from Kevin Durant. The Trail Blazers fell 99-82 on Saturday against the Lakers.

As well, there are five games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Tuesday, with Tennessee at Vanderbilt, Illinois at Wisconsin, Georgetown at Providence, Purdue at Michigan State, and Alabama at Kentucky. The Wildcats enter Tuesday's game on a three-game winning streak, as they knocked off LSU 81-55 in their last outing on Saturday. DeMarcus Cousins poured in 19 points in that win. The Crimson Tide have lost six of their last eight games; they were beaten 74-67 by Mississippi in their last outing on Saturday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are seven games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with Florida at Carolina, Nashville at the Islanders, Calgary at Ottawa, Vancouver at Tampa Bay, Detroit at St. Louis, Dallas at Chicago, and Boston at Buffalo. The Bruins finally got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, as Tuukka Rask made 36 saves in the team's 3-0 road win over the Canadiens. Boston had been on a 10-game losing streak. The Sabres were blanked 4-0 in Columbus in their last game Saturday; backup goalie Patrick Lalime stopped 21 of 25 shots in the loss.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Tuesday, February 9

      Lines off the board today

New Jersey Nets at Cleveland Cavaliers: Nets guards Devin Harris (back) and Chris Douglas-Roberts (shin) are listed as questionable.

Washington Wizards at Charlotte Bobcats: Bobcats guard Raymond Felton (ankle) and Tyson Chandler (foot) are listed as questionable.

Houston Rockets at Miami Heat: Rockets forward Trevor Aziza (hip) is listed as doubtful.

Atlanta Hawks at Memphis Grizzlies: Hawks guard Joe Johnson (flu) is listed as questionable.

Dallas Mavericks at Denver Nuggets: Mavs center Erick Dampier (knee) and forward Tim Thomas (personal) are listed as doubtful. Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony (ankle), guard Chauncey Billups (ankle) and centers Nene (foot) and Chris Anderson (knee) are listed as probable.

Lines to keep an eye on

Minnesota Timberwolves at Philadelphia 76ers: Total opened at 203.5 and jumped to 204.5. T'wolves have hit Over in six of last seven, but Under is 7-1 in last eight in Philly.

Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers: Total opened at 200 and jumped to as high as 202 at most books. Under is 9-3 in the last 12 at Indy.

Detroit Pistons at Milwaukee Bucks: Total opened at 188.5 and has climbed to 189.5. Bucks went from 7.5-point favorites to 8 at most books.

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers: Total opened at 198.5 and jumped two points to 200.5 at most books. Over is 7-3 in last 10 at Clippers.

      Weather to watch

The opening race of the America's Cup was postponed Monday because of light, unsteady winds off the coast of Spain. The weather pattern is expected to persist and organizers hope to get the event under way Wednesday.

      Who's hot

Utah Jazz are 12-1 SU in their last 13.

Cleveland Cavaliers have won 11 in a row SU, 6-1 ATS in last seven.

Milwaukee Bucks are 10-1 ATS in their last 11.

Ottawa Senators are 11-1 in their last 12.

      Who's not

Sacramento Kings are 1-13 SU in their last 14.

Dallas Mavericks are 1-8 ATS in their last nine.

Detroit Pistons are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight.

Boston Bruins are 1-10 in their last 11.

      Key stat

3 to 1 - The number of losses the Cleveland Cavaliers have in their 18 games since New Year's Day vs. the number of wins the New Jersey Nets have in their 18 games since New Year's Day. Don't expect those numbers to change tonight.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson is listed as questionable for tonight's game at the Memphis Grizzlies with the flu. He did not practice Monday but made the flight with the team for the one-game trip, possibly a sign he will play. Johnson averages 21.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game.

      Biggest game on the slate

Purdue Boilermakers at Michigan State Spartans (-3, 138.5)

      Notable quotable

''Kahonas. Our coach has those and that's the reason we're the No. 1 football team in the world.''

-- Darren Sharper of the New Orleans Saints on coach Sean Payton's gamble to onside kick to start the second half of Super Bowl XLIV.

      Tips and notes

The Washington Wizards got a mini-vacation in Florida while D.C. was in the grips of a weekend blizzard. After Saturday's game against the Atlanta Hawks was postponed, the Wizards opted to spend two days in Orlando before flying to Charlotte on Monday for Tueday's game against the Hornets. Despite the long trip, it could be just what the doctor ordered for the struggling Wiz.

Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz called out veteran J.P. Dumont for dogging it and he responded Saturday by scoring two goals, but the team still lost to the Sharks 4-3. Trotz is trying to shake his team out of a 2-7 slump by publicly criticizing its leaders - a great plan if it works, but it can create dissention. The Predators open a four-game road trip tonight on Long Island.

Tennessee reinstated junior center Brian Williams from his suspension for a Jan. 1 joyride with three teammates, weed and a gun. He could be a big help in tonight's rematch of a 85-76 loss to Vanderbilt two weeks ago. The Commodores outrebounded the Vols 41-37 and had 24 second-chance points. The 6-foot-10 Williams is averaging 5.4 points and 5.9 boards per contest.

        Tuesday six-pack

-- Kansas went on an awesome 22-0 run late in first half, as Jayhawks went to Austin and whacked the Longhorns 80-68, handing Texas fifth loss in its last seven games.

-- Niagara led 37-23 at half, but lost 70-62 at Rider, Purple Eagles are a very disappointing team in the MAAC.

-- Fairfield lost 69-67 at Siena, which has to give Stags hope that they can upset the Saints should they meet in MAAC title game in 3 weeks.

-- Great game in Las Cruces, with New Mexico State hitting shot with 0:01.1 left to beat Louisiana Tech 70-68, in game where both teams had double digit leads. Aggies sweep season series with Tech; surprising.

-- Western Carolina got upset again, this time 81-76 at lowly Elon.

-- Colts are 7-1 favorites to win next year's Super Bowl.

        ************************************************** ************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a chilly day.......

        13) Siena capped its ticket sales Friday night at 8,065 fans, turning away other people who wanted to get into their game with Iona. Problem with that is the arena they play in seats 14,000+ people; they have a curtain in front of other sections to reduce seating capacity. Why couldn't they pull the curtain back so that more people could watch the game?

        12) By the way, thanks to the guy standing in front of the arena Friday who gave me a ticket to the game and wouldn't take any money for it, or else I would have gone out on a cold night for nothing.

        11) Drew Brees went 3-1 vs Andy Roddick in junior tennis back when they were 10-year olds.

        10) Its good to see that offense wins championships, too.

        9) Saints beat Warner-Favre-Manning to win, three Hall of Fame QBs.

        8) Odd that Saints/Colts both had two kickers on their 53-man roster; the onside kick New Orleans pulled off was the first time Thomas Morstead had ever tried an onside kick in a game.

        7) ESPN is televising a fishing tournament for two days Feb 20-21; have to be careful watching fishing on TV-- its easy to get hooked. He he.

        6) In their last three games, LSU scored 15-16-14 points in first half. Hard to imagine the Tigers winless in the SEC, but they are.

        5) Former NHL player Dan Quinn, who scored 40 goals in 1988, is now a caddy on the pro golf tour, working part-time for Ernie Els.

        4) Steve Stricker is the world's #1-ranked active golfer; you wonder if the Tour Commissioner is going to pick up the phone soon...."Mrs Woods, can Eldrick come out and play?"

        3) Super Bowl had its highest overnight TV ratings in 23 years.

        2) NBA is looking to roll back player contracts by a lot, prompting one of the union's officers to call their proposal "ludicrous". The gravy train that NBA players have been riding is going to slow down real soon.

        1) I think when the next NFL TV contract is done, Super Bowl will be on President's Day weekend, which is good, so I can sleep in the next day.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Wizards at Charlotte Bobcats (N/A)

The Wizards were snowed out of Washington D.C. for the past four days, but they aren't complaining. Instead of braving the blizzard conditions in D.C. for a postponed game against the Atlanta Hawks, the Wizards opted to spend a long weekend in Orlando before flying to Charlotte for tonight's game.

The Wizards did practice while in the Sunshine State, but most took advantage of the detour. Antawn Jamison flew to Miami for the Super Bowl. He and DeShawn Stevenson have homes in the area and were able to sleep in their own beds and drive teammates around to shop for extra underwear.

"It ain't too bad. It's definitely better than being under 20 inches" of snow, Randy Foye told the Washington Post. "The biggest thing is, you always want to be with your family. But we got a job to do. We all understand the circumstances of trying to make the ride back to D.C., the dangers and stuff, but we stuck it out here."

With the All-Star break less than a week away, the much-needed R&R could work in the Wizards' favor, especially since the banged-up Bobcats may be without point guard Raymond Felton (ankle) and center Tyson Chandler (foot).

The Bobcats have lost three in a row while the Wizards are coming off an upset over the Magic - and a refreshing mini-vacation.

            Pick: Wizards

Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers (+1, 191)

With Kobe and Melo nursing injuries, Kevin Durant is well on his way to becoming the next first-name-basis star in the West.

Durant has thrust his name into the MVP discussion along with LeBron and the two aforementioned stars in just his second season by averaging 29.7 points per game.

But the Thunder is proving it is more than a one-man team. Guard Russell Westbrook has been on the verge of triple-doubles for the past three games, averaging 19.7 points, 9.7 assists and 8.0 rebounds during that span. He had eight steals in Sunday's win over the Warriors, the Thunder's fifth straight.

"Everybody knows it's coming; he's been flirting with triple-doubles all season," Durant said. "A quadruple-double doesn't come around very often. He did a great job of initiating the offense, getting his steals and making easy baskets. We followed his lead tonight. He does a great job of filling up the stat sheet."

The Blazers are without Westbrook's counterpart, point guard Brandon Roy, and will have a hard time hanging with the Thunder's fresh, young legs.

            Pick: Thunder

Game of the day: Boilermakers at Spartans
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Purdue Boilermakers at Michigan State Spartans (-3, 139)

A big battle in the Big Ten Conference tips off at the Breslin Center in East Lansing Tuesday night when Michigan State (19-5, 9-2) hosts Purdue (19-3, 7-3) with both teams looking to secure win No. 20 on the season.

The Boilermakers have dropped nine straight games at MSU, going 2-7 ATS in the process.

                Spartan spark

Despite back-to-back losses at Wisconsin and Illinois last week, Michigan State sits alone in first place in the Big Ten at 9-2, which marks the best start in school history.

The Spartans started 4-0 in Big Ten road games, giving them a school best run of 12 wins in 13 conference road games.

MSU’s five losses this campaign have come against quality competition, all away from home: at North Carolina and Texas, versus Florida in Atlantic City, and at Wisconsin and Illinois last week.

                On guard

Leading scorer Kalin Lucas (15.6 ppg) sprained his ankle in Tuesday's 67-49 loss at Wisconsin. It was initially thought to be severe but it's being called a “low sprain” and the long-term prognosis for recovery is good.

Lucas, last season’s Big Ten Player of the Year, took part in some pre-game warm ups Saturday. Head coach Tom Izzo said Lucas was "maybe 50-50" on Sunday, but late Monday night reports surfaced that the floor general would play.

"I'm disappointed in one breath and proud in the other," Izzo said in response to the loss of Lucas while addressing the production from the bench after Draymond Green responded with 17 points and 16 rebounds, and Chris Allen chipped in with 15 points.

"We showed something that I think is gonna help us down the road."

                Bountiful Boilermakers

Purdue’s 19-3 start is due in large part to its three-pronged offense, led by its juniors E'Twaun Moore (17.2 ppg), Robbie Hummel (16.5 ppg) and center JaJuan Johnson (14.4 ppg).
In Big Ten play, Moore is averaging 18.7 a game, Hummel is at 18.2 and Johnson is at 13.3 points and 6.9 rebounds.

Hummel is averaging 16 points and eight rebounds during the Boilermakers' current five-game winning streak, including the 21 points and seven rebounds he posted in a Feb. 4 victory at Indiana.

Sophomore point guard Lewis Jackson has tallied 41 total minutes in three games since returning from a broken left foot that sidelined him for the season's first 19 games.

After falling to 2-3 in the Big Ten with a loss at Northwestern on January 16, Purdue has won five consecutive conference games and is positioned to make a move on the league lead. During this five-game winning streak, the Boilermakers held three opponents under 60 points.

“It has been important for us to remain focused on the process and not on the prize," Purdue coach Matt Painter said when speaking in reference to the Boilermakers' ability to bounce back from their sluggish Big Ten start and win five consecutive league games.

                Tale of the tape

Putting both squads on a statistical scale, here is how each team ranks against 347 other Division 1 teams, according to cov.com statistical rankings:

                Offensive Field Goal Percentage:
                Michigan State 48.5 (12)
                Purdue 45.7 (71)

                Defensive Field Goal Percentage:
                Michigan State 40.5 (50)
                Purdue 40.5 (49)

                Rebound Margin:
                Michigan State +10.8 (2)
                Purdue +2.4 (95)

While Purdue is outrebounding its opponents for all games, the Boilermakers are being outrebounded in Big Ten competition, 34.5 to 32.1.

Michigan State owns the conference's best team of rebounders, averaging 40.2 a game.

                Coaches’ corner

As one might expect, Izzo brings solid numbers to the Spartans’ table.

Under his lead in 14-plus seasons, MSU is 234-197-6 ATS in all lined games, including 144-123-1 ATS in conference play.

Izzo shines in games when playing off back-to-back losses, going 25-10 SU and 20-13 ATS, including 12-1 SU and ATS when facing an opponent with a .600 or greater winning percentage.

Purdue is 73-67-2 ATS under Painter, including 45-39-1 ATS against Big Ten foes.

Behind Painter, the Boliermakers are 11-22 ATS as dogs of less than 10 points. On the flip side, Purdue is 11-2 ATS in games against opposition off a SU favorite loss with Painter, including 6-0 ATS when taking points.

                Bet you didn’t you know…

Michigan State is 1-6 ATS in its last seven game and 1-6 ATS versus an opponent off back-to-back wins this season.

Purdue is 6-4-1 ATS versus opponents playing .666 or better ball this season and 3-7 ATS versus .600 or less opposition. The Boilermakers are 32-52-3 ATS on the Big Ten road this decade, including 16-36-3 ATS as a dog.

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Flames at Ottawa Senators (-145, 5)

The Senators were one of the hottest teams in the league when they showed up in Toronto to face the Maple Leafs Saturday night, but it sure didn’t show on the ice. Ottawa, who had won a franchise-high 11 games in a row, was destroyed 5-0 by a determined Leafs club.

But the Senators aren’t letting it bring them down.

“If anything, it’s a bit of humility. Gets us ready for the next one,” centre Jason Spezza told the Ottawa Sun. “We’ve been playing great and things have been going real well, but you’re going to have bumps along the road. This happened to be it and we’re embarrassed by it. But we’ve just got to bounce back.”

Before Saturday’s loss to Toronto, Ottawa hadn’t allowed more than two goals a game and had outscored opposing teams 37-13 over its 11-game wining streak. Not surprisingly, the Senators have gone under the total in nine of those 11 outings.

The Flames have been playing much better since acquiring Ales Kotalik and Niklas Hagman in separate trades last week. After a dismal 2-9-3 stretch, Calgary has won two of its last three and hasn’t allowed more than one regulation goal in each of those contests.

                  Pick: Under

Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres (-150, 5)

The Boston Bruins managed to earn their first win in 11 games Sunday afternoon shutting out the Montreal Canadiens 3-0. Goalie Tuukka Rask was amazing, stopping all 36 sots fired at him, but the Bruins can thank Montreal for deflecting two shots into their own net.

“With what we've been going through the last little while, we were really hoping for a break to come our way,” Bruins head coach Claude Julien told the Canadian Press. “It's true, we had some luck tonight and that's what got us the win our whole team was looking for. After 10 losses, it was something we were hoping to see soon.”

Prior to that, Boston hadn’t scored more than two goals in nine of its last 11 games, racking up a total of only 11 goals during that span.

The Buffalo Sabres haven’t been lighting the world on fire either with four consecutive losses. But after a three-day rest, expect the Sabres to get back to their winning ways.

                  Pick: Sabres
