    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, February 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The new-look Maple Leafs play host to the Devils, Kentucky takes on Mississippi, and the Hawks look for a win in Oklahoma.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Tuesday, with Memphis at Cleveland, Toronto at Indiana, Milwaukee at Orlando, Detroit at New Jersey, the Clippers at Chicago, Golden State at Houston, and Atlanta at Oklahoma City. The Hawks (30-16 SU, 30-16 ATS) were thumped 104-86 in Orlando in their last game on Saturday; Joe Johnson had 19 points for Atlanta in that defeat. The Thunder (26-21 SU, 28-19 ATS) are coming off a 112-104 home win over Golden State in their Sunday outing. Kevin Durant exploded for 45 points for OKC in that victory.

As well, top games around college hoops on Tuesday sees Providence at Syracuse, Seton Hall at Villanova, Kansas State at Nebraska, Michigan State at Wisconsin, TCU at BYU, and Mississippi at Kentucky. The Wildcats (20-1 SU, 10-9 ATS) bounced back from their first loss of the season with an 85-72 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday; DeMarcus Cousins tossed in 21 points for Kentucky that day. The Rebels (16-5 SU, 11-6 ATS) fell 80-73 to Arkansas in their last game on Sunday. Murphy Holloway scored 19 points for Mississippi in that loss.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are nine games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Tuesday, with Washington at Boston, Tampa Bay at Atlanta, Vancouver at Montreal, Minnesota at Dallas, Phoenix at Nashville, Columbus at Colorado, the Rangers at Los Angeles, Detroit at San Jose, and New Jersey at Toronto. The last-place Maple Leafs shook up their roster on the weekend, trading for Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf and Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Toronto blew an early lead in falling 5-3 to the Canucks last time out on Saturday.

Bettors best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Tuesday, February 2

      Lines off the board today

Toronto Raptors at Indiana Pacers: Raptors forward Hedo Turkoglu is listed as doubtful with a broken bone under his eye.

Detroit Pistons at New Jersey Nets: Pistons guard Will Bynum (ankle) and forward Charlie Villanueva (back) are listed as questionable.

Los Angeles Clippers at Chicago Bulls: Both team's centers are injured - L.A.'s Chris Kaman (ankle) and Chicago's Joakim Noah (foot).

New York Rangers at Los Angeles Kings: The Rangers are negotiating a trade with the Calgary Flames that could impact their lineup.

Lines to keep an eye on

Atlanta Hawks at Oklahoma City Thunder: The Thunder came out as a 1-point favorite but the line has become a pick-em at most books.

Milwaukee Bucks at Orlando Magic: The total opened at 194.5 and jumped to 195.5, curious since both teams have gone under in their last two.

      Weather to watch

Heavy rains spoiled Monday's Media Day, a soggy reminder of the last Super Bowl in Miami in 2007. The Colts remember it well since they won, but a 20 percent chance of rain for Sunday is cause for concern for two pass-happy dome teams. Keep one eye on the forecast this week and another on the odds, especially the total.

      Who's hot

Cleveland Cavaliers have won eight in a row SU, four in a row ATS.

Chicago Bulls have won five in a row SU and ATS, all on the road.

Washington Capitals are 13-1 in their last 14.

Vancouver Canucks have won seven in a row.

      Who's not

Houston Rockets are 2-12 ATS in their last 14.

Detroit Pistons are 1-6 SU and ATS in their last seven.

Boston Bruins are 1-10 in their last 11.

Toronto Maple Leafs have lost six in a row.

      Key stat

Golden State Warriors are 1-6 SU in their last seven but 5-2 ATS during that span.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Phoenix Coyotes top scorer Scott Upshall may be out for the season with a torn ACL and the loss could be devastating to a team that struggled to light the lamp until recently. Shane Doan may pick up some slack, scoring three goals and nine points last week, but foes now face one less threat.

      Biggest game on the slate

Ole Miss Rebels at Kentucky Wildcats

      Notable quotable

''After retirement, I'm coming after your job, Clark. I'm just letting you know, so you either have three more years or seven more years.''

-- U.S. President Barack Obama told CBS college basketball color commentator Clark Kellogg during Saturday's Duke-Georgetown broadcast.

      Tips and notes

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem meets with the players today to discuss the ruling on Phil Michelson's square-grooved Ping wedge. A technicality will allow his use of the outlawed club because it was made before 1990, a loophole created by a Ping lawsuit. The club itself may have no impact on his game, but how will Lefty handle the heat?

Golden State coach Don Nelson should throw out his halftime speeches. The Warriors were outscored by 13 points in the third quarter of Sunday's 112-104 loss to Oklahoma City, the 30th time they have been outpointed in that pivotal period. They are 3-27 in those games and Nelson is shaking up his second-half strategy to ''stop having these lazy third quarters.''

The Dallas Stars are switching goalies again. Marty Turco gets the start tonight after Alexander Auld gave up four goals in a loss to Phoenix on Sunday. Auld got the job after Turco went through a cold spell in mid-January, and so on and so on. Turco gets another chance to return to his former form tonight against the Minnesota Wild.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

Six of the most interesting Bracket Buster matchups for Feb 20.....

-- Western Carolina @ Kent State-- WCU coach Larry Hunter used to coach in the MAC at Ohio U; he has one of SoCon's best teams.

-- Charleston @ George Mason-- Not too many Bracket Busters have a game where both coaches have been in Final Four.

-- Morgan State @ Murray State-- Morgan is 7-0 in MEAC, Murray has won 11 games in row. Bears are coached by Todd Bozeman, who was Jason Kidd's coach at Cal.

-- New Mexico State @ Pacific-- Red-hot teams are forner Big West rivals. Aggies are in 3-way tie for lead atop WAC.

-- Wichita State @ Utah State-- BYU is 20-2, but they lost in Logan. This is a very tough game for the Shockers.

-- Siena @ Butler- By far best game of weekend. Saints have chance for their most impressive non-conference win this season.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

        13) USC coach Kevin O'Neill fired one of his managers after the guy got a technical foul for bitching at the refs with 5:00 left in a two-point game at Oregon this weekend. This guy isn't really a student manager-- he is a grad student who has already spent a year coaching a high school team, but it is funny to me, since thats how I put myself through college, as a student manager for a college basketball team.

        12) Cornell is ranked 25th in country, first time an Ivy League team other than Penn or Princeton has been ranked since 1970.

        11) Having Bob Knight analyze Texas-Oklahoma State would be like if you asked George Strait to analyze a rap album. Different worlds. Texas Longhorns are struggling; not only have they lost three of their last five games, they've trailed in six of last seven games at halftime.

        10) Chicago Bears finally hired Mike Martz as offensive coordinator; will be very interested to see if he can raise Jay Cutler's level of play, in a city where the weather is awful late in the season. Usually you like to run the ball in lousy weather. Martz Madness doesn't involve running the ball.

        9) UConn got hammered at Louisville, its sixth loss in last eight games. If that game doesn't get Jim Calhoun back on the bench, then he's real sick.

        8) Last year's Super Bowl was broadcast in 230 countries, 34 languages.

        7) Jon Miller is a Hall of Fame broadcaster? Not from what I hear every Sunday night in the summer on ESPN. I'm told he is much better on radio, but I still think they put too many broadcasters in the Hall of Fame.

        6) The Aaron Miles era didn't last long in Oakland; they've already dealt him to the Reds, after acquiring him from the Cubs earlier this winter. A's get weak-hitting Willy Taveras and a utility infielder named Rosales, and they also got a utility infielder named Tolleson from Minnesota.

        5) None of those moves are terribly earth-shattering, but my point is, at least they're doing something, unlike the big market Mets, whose major move on Monday was signing the oft-traveled Frank Catalanotto. With 16 days left until spring training starts, Mets don't have a starting catcher.

        4) Melvin Mora gets $1.3M for one year from the Rockies. Cincinnati got a shortstop when it gave Orlando Cabrera $3.02M for one year.

        3) CC Sabathia will make $23M this season. The entire starting rotation for the Tampa Bay Rays will earn $8.2M.

        2) So now Gilbert Arenas is writing Op-Ed pieces in Washington Post? It is amazing what you'll do when there's $80M or so riding on it.......

        1) You mean to tell me no one wants Orlando Hudson? Come on.....

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Utah Jazz (-3.5, 200.5)

It’s been a rough year for Dallas backers. On the one hand your team sits third in the highly competitive Western Conference at 30-17. But at the same time the Mavs are just 20-27 against the spread and have dropped failed to cover in eight of their last 10 games.

Friday’s overtime to the Portland Trail Blazers was a reality check for Dallas supporters. The Mavs let Andre Miller – yes, the same Miller who couldn’t make a 12-foot jump shot to save his life – to score 52 points.

            Yikes.

Meanwhile the Jazz are playing their best ball so far this season. They’ve won nine of their last 10 but will be tested to continue the streak with Carlos Boozer out for a few games.

            Pick: Jazz

Charlotte Bobcats at Portland Trail Blazers (-3, 188.5)

All season long the Bobcats have struggled to win away from home. At least that was the case until Charlotte’s latest road trip. Larry Brown’s boys are 3-1 straight up and ATS on their western swing.

The Bobcats aren’t content to simply go back home with a split on the six-game road trip.

“The way we’re playing, we’re capable of winning all these games,” All-Star forward Gerald Wallace told the Charlotte Observer after scoring 38 points in a 103-96 win over the Kings.

“This is the time for us to make a statement, particularly going into the All-Star break.”

Winning in Portland is never an easy task for any team, but catching the Blazers without leading scorer Brandon Roy should propel the Bobcats towards the victory.

            Pick: Charlotte

Game of the day: Ole Miss Rebels at Kentucky Wildcats
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mississippi Rebels at Kentucky Wildcats (-11, 153.5)

A super showdown in the SEC tips off Tuesday evening on ESPN when No. 3 Kentucky (20-1, 5-1 East) hosts Mississippi (16-5, 4-3 West) at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Wildcats have lost only once to the Rebels in Lexington since Rupp Arena opened in the 1976-77 season.

                  Ups and downs

Kentucky registered its 20th win of the season in a 85-72 win over Vanderbilt Saturday, moving the Wildcats into a tie atop the SEC East standings with the Commodores at 5-1.

Forward DeMarcus Cousins registered his fourth consecutive double-double and 12th of the season, a Kentucky freshman record, with 21 points and 10 rebounds against the Commodores. Cousins is averaging 16.2 points and 9.7 rebounds a game for the season.

Just when it appeared Mississippi was on the rise, the Rebels dropped a stunning 80-73 decision to Arkansas at home as double-digit favorites on Sunday and fell out of the top 20 polls in the process.

Surprisingly, the Rebels outrebounded the Razorbacks, 45-32, including 17 from reserve Murphy Holloway. It was the first time in 12 games Ole Miss outrebounded an opponent.

Arkansas shot 48.1 percent from the floor compared to 38.2 percent of the Rebels.

                  Guarding the keys

It will be a dichotomy of youth versus experience in the backcourt when Kentucky's freshmen John Wall (16.9 ppg) and Eric Bledsoe (11.0 ppg) face Ole Miss veterans Chris Warren (16.7 ppg), Terrico White (15.0 ppg), and Eniel Polynice (10.6), the Rebels’ three leading scorers.

Warren and Polynice, along with key reserve guard Trevor Gaskins, all suffered crippling season-ending knee injuries last season. Mississippi is now healthy and its guard play is primed to take the school to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2002.

                  Tale of the tape

The Rebels rely largely on 3-point shooting. When the shots are falling they can be extremely dangerous. When they’re not, they are suspect. Ole Miss went 6-for-22 against Arkansas and lost.

Here is how each team ranks against 347 other Division 1 teams, according to Covers.com’s statistical rankings:

                  Offensive Field Goal Percentage:
                  Kentucky (11) 49.1
                  Mississippi (53) 46.5

                  Defensive Field Goal Percentage:
                  Kentucky (14) 38.1
                  Mississippi (47) 40.3

                  Rebound Margin:
                  Kentucky (2) +10.4
                  Mississippi (105) +2.0

The Wildcats’ Achilles heel is from the free throw stripe. They are shooting only 68.4 percent for the season, including 67.5 percent from the line in conference play.

                  Tale of the tape II

South Carolina, the only team to beat Kentucky this season, may have provided the blueprint for upsetting the Wildcats. The Ole Miss film room has probably shown more clips of the Gamecocks' 68-62 victory than the whole state of South Carolina.

The three keys for the Gamecocks were:

                  1) Stopping the Wall - Kentucky freshman phenom John Wall was held to four points on 6-of-16 shooting.

                  2) Man the boards - South Carolina outrebounded the Wildcats by a slim but critical 44-40 margin, because ...

                  3) Opportunity knocks twice - The Gamecocks scored 22 second-chance points to Kentucky's nine.

Stats are one thing, but the bottom line is the host Gamecocks outhustled the 'Cats at every turn, easier said than done at Rupp Arena.

                  Did you know?

Kentucky bounced Ole Miss, 71-58, in the donkey round in last year’s SEC tourney.

The Wildcats are 21-4 straight up at home when hosting the Rebels, but only 3-7 ATS the last 10.

Mississippi is 5-1 ATS as a visitor this season and 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games as a conference road dog.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (130, 6)

The Washington Capitals have been unstoppable. They earned their 10th straight win with a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning Sunday, tying a franchise record for most consecutive wins in a season.

“My emotions are mellow”, coach Bruce Boudreau told the Washington Post following the win. “The number 10 is pretty tough to get to, and I told the guys, ‘You might go your whole career without getting it again, so enjoy it’.”

Boudreau thinks that his team’s success can be attributed to its penalty kill and stingy defense. The Caps have blanked opposing power plays five times during the course of their winning streak and have allowed an average of 2.21 goals per game. And owning the league’s top power play and scoring offense hasn’t hurt either.

The Bruins have been headed in a completely different direction. They have lost 10 of their last 11 games, scoring an average of less than two goals per night during that span. It’s just not going to cut it against the red-hot Capitals.

                      Pick: Capitals

Vancouver Canucks at Montreal Canadiens (125, 5.5)

The Montreal Canadiens didn’t just suffer a disheartening 3-2 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators Saturday afternoon, but they also lost leading scorer Mike Cammalleri indefinitely with a knee injury.

“I don’t know how much I can tell you”, Cammalleri told the Montreal Gazette before leaving Scotiabank Place on crutches Saturday. “I’m hoping it’s not too bad.”

While the team has yet to get the results of Cammalleri’s MRI test, the injury does appear serious. With Andrei Kostitsyn also sidelined, the Habs’ most productive line composed of Cammalleri, Kostisyn and Tomas Plekanec, which has scored 39 of the team’s 91 even-strength goals, is now missing two key components.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks have won their last seven contests, most recently erasing a 3-0 deficit to beat the Maple Leafs 5-3 in Toronto Saturday night.

                      Pick: Canucks
