Inside the Paint - Friday

The NBA hardwood heats up Friday with a dozen games slated. A lot of fans will get to watch the Celtics and Hawks play on NBATV at 7:30 p.m. EST, but that’s only one of the intriguing matchups on tap. Our friends at ASA have offered up a solid PREVIEW between the Spurs and Grizzlies. This battle was once forgotten but in case you haven’t noticed, Memphis is back and in a big way too. The Southwest Division is the only group in the league that can say all five teams have a winning record. At the midway point of the season, that’s very impressive.
For tonight, we’re going to turn our attention to three non-conference battles and then touch on another edition of CD’s Bonus Hits at the bottom.

Let’s break ‘em down!

L.A. Lakers (35-11 SU, 21-23 ATS) at Philadelphia (15-30 SU, 19-26 ATS)

After opening their eight-game road trip with two losses in the first three contests, the Lakers have rebounded strongly albeit against weaker competition. Los Angeles handled Washington (115-103) on Tuesday and then Indiana (118-96) on Wednesday. With those two wins, Phil Jackson’s team now stands at 12-8 SU and 8-12 ATS on the road.

Can the Lakers keep it going on Friday when they visit Philadelphia, the home town of All-Star guard Kobe Bryant? Los Angeles has won and covered three of the past four encounters, including two games played in “The City of Brotherly Love.” Let it be known that L.A. does have a look-ahead game on tap at Boston on Sunday.

The 76ers looked like they were starting to make a run with two straight wins against Dallas and Indiana last week. Unfortunately, they followed those victories with back-to-back losses.

Philadelphia has had trouble scoring at home (95 PPG) this year, and it’s evident in its record at Wachovia Center. Head coach Eddie Jordan has watched his squad notch a miserable 7-15 SU and 5-17 ATS ledger at home. The ‘under’ has gone 15-7.

Total players will be looking at two streaks for tonight. The Lakers have watched their last four go ‘over’ the number, but the 76ers are currently on a 5-0 ‘under’ run. And, the last six played in Philly have gone ‘under’ the number too. Something has to give here!

Chicago (22-22 SU, 21-21 ATS) at New Orleans (25-20 SU, 22-23 ATS)

Seriously, who would’ve expected Chicago to start its seven-game road trip with a pair of losses to the Warriors and Clippers, but then bounce back with four consecutive wins against the Suns, Rockets, Spurs and Thunder? Not this writer and not the oddsmakers either! The Bulls cashed outright money-line tickets in all four wins as underdogs and they’re catching points again tonight in the “Big Easy.”

It might be too early to say Chicago is turning the corner under head coach Vinny Del Negro but this is a different team than the one we saw blow the huge lead against Sacramento in December. The troops are back to .500 for the first time, both SU and ATS.

The Bulls have a tough draw to finish the trip with a 5-2 ledger, especially since New Orleans is playing great ball too. The Hornets just finished a four-game road trip that saw the team go 3-1 both SU and ATS, and the lone loss came to Denver (110-116) in overtime. The ‘over’ went 3-1 during this span.

New Orleans owns a solid 16-4 mark at home, and its 10-10 ATS numbers isn’t too bad in the Western Conference.

Chicago has had the Hornets number recently, winning and covering the last three meetings, including a 98-85 win at United Center on Dec. 26 as a short favorite (-2). The ‘under’ cashed, but the last two games played in New Orleans between this pair went ‘over’ the total.

Charlotte (22-22 SU, 25-18 ATS) at Golden State (13-31 SU, 25-18 ATS)

Former Golden State Warrior Stephen Jackson returns to Oracle Arena on Friday to face his old teammates after demanding to be traded from the Bay Area. He got his wish, wound up Charlotte and the rest is history. Jackson has helped thrust the Bobcats into the Eastern Conference playoff race, plus he’s kept his mouth shut with Larry Brown running the ship.

The Bobcats opened up their six-game road trip against the West with a loss to Denver but followed up with an overtime victory at Phoenix on zero days rest. Tonight’s battle is the start of another back-to-back set for Charlotte, who is only 4-17 on the road this year. Browns’ team has managed to post an 11-9 ATS record but the point-spread on tonight’s tilt seems too short to matter.

Golden State hasn’t prospered before or after the Jackson trade and the word rebuilding continues to surround Don Nelson’s team despite some talent. Of the Warriors 13 wins this year, nine have come at home. Plus, Golden State has gone 13-8 ATS at home too.

Even though Larry Brown likes to push defense with his teams, the ‘Cats have been a solid ‘over’ team this season (26-18), especially on the road (13-8). Golden State hasn’t been afraid to run either, and its third-ranked offense (107 PPG) can prove it. Whenever these two teams get together, shootouts usually happen too. The previous four have gone ‘over’ and only one of the games was a double-digit victory. The two teams have gone 2-2 both SU and ATS during this run, with each club notching at least one road win.

CD’s Bonus Hits:

Finally Utah is acting like Utah! Jerry Sloan’s team is 18-6 SU and 17-7 ATS at home this year and they enter Friday’s game against Sacramento with a four-game wining streak, both SU and ATS. Now the Jazz face a Kings team that is on a 1-4 run both SU and ATS. If you look at those numbers and toss in the revenge factor when Sac-Town beat Utah 104-99 back in November at Salt Lake City, it just seems to easy to bet the Jazz here even without Deron Williams or Carlos Boozer.
We mentioned the Celtics-Hawks showdown above and you should watch it if you like hoops. And, you might just see Atlanta complete a four-game regular season sweep of Boston at the same time. When was the last time that happened?
Can the Nets win two in a row when they meet the Wizards on Friday? Absolutely! Washington has given up again and it’s a matter of time before that fire sale happens to that team. I actually thought the Wizards had promise at the beginning of the year with the return of Gilbert Arenas and acquisitions of Mike Miller and Randy Foye. Sorry for thinking out loud.
The only All-Star surprise in both conferences to me was Atlanta’s Al Horford. He’s a nice player averaging a double-double, but Josh Smith’s all-around game should’ve been recognized more in my opinion.
I did like to see that the Bulls’ Derrick Rose and Celtics’ Rajon Rondo will get the opportunity to showcase their stuff in the All-Star Game. I’m real high on the pair and believe this will be the first of many for the pair. Can you believe that Danny Ainge was trying to move Rondo last year?
Even though Super Bowl XLIV is a week away, I was able to look at some props from the Las Vegas Hilton for the big game that won’t be posted until Saturday.
