Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres (N/A)

Two of the Eastern Conference’s powerhouses will be featured tonight when the New Jersey Devils face the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena.

The Sabres will be happy to come home after a season-long, seven-game road trip. They managed only two wins during that stretch, losing the last four contests and most recently falling to the red-hot Vancouver Canucks 3-2 Monday night.

“We've got to be a little better,” defenseman Toni Lydman told the Buffalo News. “We've got to take care of the puck. We've got to make sure we don't give the other team the opportunities.

“The further the season is going — spring is coming — the tougher the games are to win. We have to cut down on the mistakes and make sure we play solid from start to finish.”

But the Sabres aren’t the only ones struggling. The Devils have lost four of their last six and have scored an average of 1.25 goals in those losses.

    Pick: Under

Calgary Flames at Dallas Stars (-130, 5.5)

Even at the Calgary Flames’ annual poker game, all the talk centered around the team’s recent lack of success.

After winning only one game in their last nine outings and losing six straight for the first time since November 2002, the Flames have tumbled from third to eighth place in the Western Conference.

“We've had way too much inconsistency in individuals' play,” head coach Brent Sutter told NHL.com. “It's affected our team play. We need a huge will to win here tonight from every guy -- and that has to be continuous, not just a one-day thing here.

“It's not a good feeling, being where we're at. It's been disappointing, let's face it. But there's reasons why it happens. We're dealing with those, and now it's time to execute.”

Calgary’s biggest problem has been on the offensive side. Jarome Iginla, the club’s leading scorer, hasn’t netted a goal in his last 11 games and his teammates haven’t been able to pick up the slack.

Dallas hasn’t been setting the world on fire either, especially on the road, where it has lost six of its last seven. But expect the Stars to take advantage of a demoralized Flames team at home.

    Pick: Stars

Pucking the trends: Take Washington and the over
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Capital Gains

Hopefully you have been parlaying the Washington Capitals to win with the over.

Not only has Washington won nine of its last 10 games, the over is 7-1-2 during that span.

Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post points out that Caps coach Bruce Boudreau has kept the same lines together during Washington’s impressive run.

"I like the chemistry on all four lines. I anticipate this is the way we'll go unless injuries dictate otherwise," Boudreau told the Washington Post.

Alex Ovechkin is playing with Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Knuble on the No. 1 line, while Tomas Fleischmann, Brooks Laich and Alexander Semin round out Washington’s top six forwards.

      An Avalanche of wins

Craig Anderson and the Colorado Avalanche are not going away. The Avs, +3000 to win the Stanley Cup at betED.com, have won six in a row and lead the Northwest Division at 30-15-6.

Craig Anderson was named the NHL’s second star this week after posting a 3-0-0 record with a 0.33 goals against average, a .988 save percentage and two shutouts.

"I think the biggest thing with us right now is just confidence," Avs defenseman Kyle Quincey told the Denver Post. "We're coming into games expecting to win. We learned the hard way.”

Adrian Dater of the Denver Post points out that Colorado not only has five of the NHL’s top 25 rookie scorers, but their entire second line is composed entirely of rookies (Matt Duchene, T.J. Galiardi and Brandon Yip).

      Boston browbeating

Last year the Boston Bruins lost 19 games in regulation all season en route to the best record in the East.

This year, the Bruins are in ninth place in the conference, on a five-game losing streak and have already lost 20 games in regulation.

Boston doesn’t play until Friday and, according to Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald, coach Claude Julien is using the layoff to hold a four-day, back-to-basics seminar.

“We have to change,” goaltender Tim Thomas told reporters after Sunday’s loss. “We have to come out with a clear vision of what we want to do and carry out that game plan, no matter what.”

The Bruins should be bolstered by the return of two-time All-Star Marc Savard on Friday.

      Third period Blues

The St. Louis Blues are one of the best road teams in the league at 14-7-4 and are tied with the Edmonton Oilers for the worst home record in the NHL at 9-14-4.

St. Louis has lost three 3-0 third period leads at home and, according to Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, blown leads were one of the reasons coach Andy Murray was fired earlier this year.

“For whatever reason, we seem to revert back to falling apart in the third period,” Blues center Andy McDonald told reporters after St. Louis’ most recent loss. “I don’t know how many games we’ve given away leads in the third period.”

As Rutherford points out, the answer is eight, most in the NHL.

      On the schedule

Thurs. Jan. 28 – St. Louis Blues at Edmonton Oilers

No team likes to play three games in four nights in western Canadian road trip, but at least the Blues get to play their final game against the hapless Oilers.

Sun. Jan 31 – New York Islanders at Florida Panthers

The Isles play three road games in four days and on back to back days. After a matinee in Philadelphia on Saturday New York plays a Florida team that is 4-0-1 in its last five at home.

Sun. Jan 31 – Los Angeles Kings at New Jersey Devils

The Kings wrap up a busy week (four road games in six days) with back-to-back games against the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils this weekend.

The Hawks have scored more than 100 PTS in 4 of their past 5 games, and for the season they average nearly 103 PPG which ranks them 7th in the NBA. 5 different Hawks players average double digits, led by F Joe Johnson and his 21 PPG. Dynamic F Josh Smith is playing his best basketball of the season, as he's scored more than his 15 PPG season average in 4 of his past 5 games. Atlanta is playing better defense of late, holding opponents to 97 PTS or fewer in 6 of their past 7 games.

Hawks are 7-2 ATS last 9 games as a road underdog.
Under is 13-5 last 18 games as an underdog.

                        Key Injuries - None.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Spurs (-3.5, O/U 195): San Antonio has had a roller coaster season this year. Just as we thought they were making a push up the standings, they lose 3 straight games SU, and 5 of their past 6 games SU. In their current 3 game losing streak, they've been at home and the listed favorite each time. The Spurs are currently 25-18 SU and 6th in the Western Conference playoff chase. At home the Spurs are 17-9 SU and 13-12-1 ATS this season. The Spurs are also 8-8 as a single digit home favorite this season. The Spurs will be looking to avoid losing 4 straight home games SU since 2002 tonight. Inconsistency on both sides of the ball continue to haunt the Spurs this season. San Antonio is led by F Tim Duncan, who is averaging nearly 20 PPG and 10 RPG, leading the team in both categories. F Richard Jefferson continues to disappoint, as he's only averaging 12 PPG, 7 PTS off his career average.

Spurs are 1-5 ATS last 6 games as a home favorite.
Under is 7-1 last 8 vs. Eastern Conference.

Key Injuries - G Michael Finley (ankle) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 96 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Florida State Seminoles at Duke Blue Devils [ESPN | 9:00 PM ET]

Seminoles: Revenge is clearly on the mind of Florida St, as they have lost to Duke 4 consecutive games SU. The Seminoles are 15-4 SU and have won back to back league contests to stand at 3-2 SU in the ACC. However, Florida St. is only 4-10 ATS for the entire season. Florida St. is 2-3 ATS as the listed underdog, with today being the 1st time this season the Seminoles are a double digit underdog. The Seminoles are 2-3 SU and 1-3 ATS in true road contests this season. Florida St. has only averaged 62.5 PPG in their 4 road lined games this season. Luckily, the Seminoles focus on their defense to win games. The Seminoles have held 10 of their 19 opponents under 60 PTS this season. C Solomon Alabi leads Florida St. in scoring with 12.6 PPG and 2.6 BPG this season. F Chris Singleton averages 11 PPG, and is coming off a career high 23 PTS in his last game. Alibi and Singleton combine for 81 blocks this season, the most in the ACC for a duo.

Seminoles are 0-4 ATS last 4 games vs. a team with a winning SU record.
Under is 10-3 last 13 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

Blue Devils (-14, O/U 140.5): Duke continues to be Duke, as they are 17-3 SU on the season, earning them a #7 national ranking. What's different from this Duke team opposed to years past is their 12-6 ATS record. Duke remains incredibly tough at home, where they are 11-0 SU and 7-3 ATS this season. Today marks the 2nd lowest point spread Duke has been favored by this season, as they've yet to play a home game with a single digit spread this season. The Blue Devils are 4-1 ATS as a favorite less than 20 PTS this season. With a win against Clemson in their last game, the Blue Devils are 4-1 SU against ranked opposition this year. 3 different Blue Devils average more than 15 PPG, led by Guards Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith. The 2 combine to average 37 PPG, with nearly 9 APG and 4.5 three pointers per game. Defensively, only 1 opponent has scored more than 70 PTS at Duke.

Blue Devils are 4-0 ATS last 4 home games.

                            Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for January 27, 2010 from Len Berman.

                            1. Quick Hits

Finally some good news for the Mets. Ace pitcher Johan Santana threw off the mound pain free for the first time since elbow surgery.
Pitcher Ben Sheets signs a one year, $10-million contract with Oakland. Will Johnny Damon be the next to sign with the A's? The Yankees say they can't afford Damon. Who knew they had a budget?
It won't be a "sisters semi" at the Australian Open. Venus lost, Serena survived. Roger Federer advanced to the semis for the 23rd straight time in a Grand Slam.
That didn't take long. In their first game as #1, Kentucky loses to South Carolina 68-62.

                            2. $uper Bowl

As a public service, as of yesterday, there were nearly 5,000 Super Bowl tickets available on Stub Hub. They range from $1675. in the end zone to a suite for $339,715. But will the economy finally catch up to the Super Bowl? Is there a place in today's world for a face value ticket of $1000 for a football game? Of course that doesn't include airfare, hotel, meals and souvenirs. The Super Bowl program alone goes for $25. For 25 bucks you could have bought 4 tickets for Super Bowl I and gotten a buck change.

                            3. All Star Game?

By comparison the Pro Bowl will be played in the same stadium this coming Sunday. The Stub Hub range for that game starts at just $35.00 a ticket. Of course lots of players have begged out because of "injury," and you won't see anybody playing from Colts or Saints, the 2 top teams in the NFL.(Although the NFL is forcing players chosen from those teams to show up and stand there.) So you really have to ask yourself is the Pro Bowl really necessary? I guess it is for degenerate gamblers. There's actually a point spread for this glorified exhibition game. The NFC is a slight favorite, but as a helpful tip from the Top 5, don't bet on it.

                            4. Rose Ruiz Lives

Shocking. A whole bunch of runners cheated in a recent Chinese marathon. It seems if you do well in a marathon it helps you get into college. So some runners took public transportation during the race, some hired faster runners. And some even gave their "timing devices" to a speedy guy, who carried the devices across the finish line. Of course this stuff is nothing new. At the 1904 Olympic Marathon in St. Louis, New Yorker Fred Lorz was the first across the finish line. He wasn't feeling well during the race, so he rode for awhile in a car. They confiscated his winning wreath.

                            5. Duh

A Brown University study concluded that baseball outfielders catch fly balls by keeping their eye on the ball. They don't call it the Ivy League for nothing.

Happy Birthday: 2000 U.S. Open tennis winner Marat Safin. 30.
Bonus Birthday: If Mozart were alive today, he'd be 254 years old. He was born on this date in 1756.

Today in Sports: Wide Right! The Giants escape Super Bowl XXV with a win over the Buffalo Bills, 20-19. 1991.
Bonus Event: Sweet Georgia Brown. The Harlem Globetrotters play their first game. 1927.
