Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Jazz take on the Trail Blazers, while Vanderbilt plays on the road against Tennessee, and BYU meets New Mexico.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 11 games on Wednesday night, including Utah at Portland. The Jazz and Trail Blazers last hooked up back on November 28 in Utah, with the home side pulling out a 108-92 victory. Carlos Boozer led the way for the Jazz in that win with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Deron Williams was good for 24 points and 15 assists in the contest. Brandon Roy scored a team-high 19 points in that losing cause for Portland, while LaMarcus Aldridge had 14 points.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Wednesday: Minnesota at Cleveland, the Lakers at Indiana, Memphis at Detroit, the Clippers at New Jersey, Chicago at Oklahoma City, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, Denver at Houston, Atlanta at San Antonio, New Orleans at Golden State, and Miami at Toronto. The Raptors are coming off a big 106-105 win over the Lakers in their last game on Sunday, as Andrea Bargnani was good for 22 points and Chris Bosh grabbed 13 rebounds.

There are two ranked matchups on the college basketball schedule for Wednesday night, with No. 21 Vanderbilt at No. 14 Tennessee, and No. 12 BYU at No. 23 New Mexico. The Cougars (20-1 SU, 11-7 ATS) are coming off a 71-69 win over San Diego State in their last contest; Jimmer Fredette tossed in 33 points for BYU in that victory. The Lobos (18-3 SU, 13-7 ATS) had no trouble with Colorado State last game, as Dairese Gary scored 17 points in an 82-64 win

Other games involving ranked teams on Wednesday: Notre Dame at No. 3 Villanova, No. 15 Temple at Charlotte, No. 19 Connecticut at Providence, No. 20 Ohio State at Iowa, Florida State at No. 8 Duke, and Texas Tech at No. 6 Texas. The Longhorns (17-2 SU, 8-7 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from their 88-74 loss to Connecticut last time out, with Damion Jones scoring 23 in that defeat.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are seven games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with New Jersey at Buffalo, Montreal at Tampa Bay, Anaheim at Washington, Detroit at Minnesota, Calgary at Dallas, St. Louis at Vancouver, and Carolina at the Rangers. The 16-28-7 Hurricanes managed to get back into the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 win over the Bruins. Ray Whitney, Eric Staal, Jussi Jokinen, Brandon Sutter, and Chad LaRose all scored for the Canes in that win, while Cam Ward made 27 saves. Carolina is just 5-16-4 on the road this season.

Los Angeles Clippers at New Jersey Nets – Devin Harris (wrist) did not play in Saturday’s game and is doubtful. Eric Gordon (toe) missed last two games and is questionable.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Toronto Star reported that Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan suffered an ankle injury during Tuesday’s practice. The rookie out of USC limped off the court with the assistance of team trainer Scott McCullough and did not return. While just averaging 24.0 minutes per outing, DeRozan has started every game this season for Toronto and is averaging 8.2 points and 2.9 rebounds. The Raptors host the Heat Wednesday and are favored by 3 points with a total of 204.

Tips and notes

- The Bulls are saving Vinny Del Negro’s job one game at a time. Chicago is playing some of the best basketball in the Association right now, coming off three straight road wins against Western Conference foes San Antonio, Phoenix and Houston. A big reason for the recent turnaround is the play of point guard Derrick Rose who got off to a slow start while playing through an injury. Rose averaged 11.5 points per game in October, 16.2 in November, 20.4 in December and 23.3 so far in January. His assists per game average has increased each month as well and he’s currently dishing out 6.5 per. The Bulls are 7-3 SU and ATS in their last 10 outings.

- Vanderbilt will likely implement a steady diet of zone defense to combat the scoring proficiency of Tennessee’s offense Wednesday. The last three Volunteers’ opponents have utilized the defensive scheme and held the team to 39 percent shooting from the floor. Head coach Bruce Pearl said the Vols will have to do a better job shooting from 3-point land to beat the zone – Tennessee ranks 195th in nation from downtown at 33.5 percent. A zone defense normally equates to a slower paced game and the total in this one is set at 146. The Vols are favored by six points and center Wayne Chism is questionable after hyperextending his knee Saturday.

- Spurs head coach Greg Popovich told TNT last week that Tim Duncan will not play in the second leg of any back-to-back situations this season. This coincides with the ease-into-the-playoffs mentality Pop has taken with his veteran team the last handful of years. The limited use of Duncan allows him to rest him for the postseason, but the center admitted he would rather be playing than sitting. The Spurs host the Hawks Wednesday and are laying 3.5 points with a total of 195.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) The A's signed Ben Sheets to a one-year, $10M deal; over last eight years, Sheets started 34-34-34-22-17-24-31-0 games, so he's had injury issues, but this is a one-year commitment for the A's, who can trade him at the deadline for prospects, or get draft picks when he bolts after 2010. In the meantime, they have an ace while their younger pitchers develop.

12) What the hell are the Mets doing? 22 days before spring training and they don't have a major league-level starting catcher yet.

11) To this day, the most traffic this website ever had in one day was in July 2004, when an interview I did with Tubby Smith at AAU Nationals in Orlando was posted. We did the interview while courtside, watching Devan Downey play for the South Carolina Ravens. Every SEC coach was there, but Downey went to Cincinnati, before eventually transferring to South Carolina, where he is a senior running amok in the SEC.

10) In his last two games, Downey has 66 points and has been impossible to contain off the dribble. His South Carolina team upset #1 Kentucky 68-62 Tuesday night, third straight time Darrin Horn's Gamecocks beat Kentucky. Even though Wildcats lost, I'd still vote them #1 in country.

9) UAB is the quietest 18-2 team in recent memory; they thumped Tulsa at home Tuesday night, and now sit atop Conference USA at 6-0.

8) Clemson went to Boston College and laid a major egg, losing 75-69- they were down 17 at the half. Tigers missed their injured guard Stitt.

7) West Virginia has a freshman sub named Dalton Pepper; who ESPN's Bill Raftery has nicknamed, "The Big Condiment".

6) Kansas State got a terrific 76-74 road win at Baylor, after a home loss to Oklahoma State that followed the great win over Texas. Frank Martin has done a solid job coaching his Wildcats.

5) Michigan State got its second consecutive one-point road win, as they escaped Ann Arbor with a tense 57-56 win. Lucas is an excellent leader for Tom Izzo in the backcourt.

4) Jets fired five lower-level assistant coaches,; it is rumored that owner Woody Johnson thought the team had too many coaches, which is why those five will not be replaced.

3) The Lubbock, TX phone book came out this week and guess who's on the cover? Mike Leach, which is an unfortunate bit of timing.

2) Sonny Dykes, son of former Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes, is new football coach at Louisiana Tech, replacing Derek Dooley, who went to Tennessee. Dykes had been offensive coordinator at Arizona, which now needs a new offensive coordinator, because the Seahawks had a bad year, thats how far down coaching ladder the Pete Carroll move has touched.

1) You look at the box up above and you realize the Saints were a national joke until Jim Mora Sr came to Bourbon Street. Don't know if they have a Ring of Honor or Hall of Fame or whatever, but the Saints need to honor Mora for getting the Saints respect for the first time in their history.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Cleveland Cavaliers (-14, 199)

This game is a perfect example of the different perspectives between sports fans and sports bettors.

At first glance you’d think the Cavs are soaring. They’re on a five-game winning streak and bested the Lakers and Heat during the hot spell.

The T-Wolves, on the other hand, still haven’t reached double digits in the win column and have dropped seven of their last eight games.

But bettors realize that LeBron James has been carrying a huge load with Mo Williams and Delonte West out due to injury. Cleveland is just 2-4-1 against the spread over its last seven contests and is only 2-9 ATS in its last 11 matchups as a double-digit favorite.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves have been getting excellent play from wingman Corey Brewer and are 5-2 ATS over their last seven.

Atlanta Hawks at San Antonio Spurs (-3.5, 195)

This might be the week that we find out if the Hawks can run with the big boys of the NBA. Atlanta owns one of the best records in the league but is 0-5 against the Lakers, Cavs and Magic this season.

This week they play the Spurs, Celtics and Magic.

“We are one of the elite teams in the league when we play up to our ability,” said Hawks guard Joe Johnson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution earlier this week.

But that’s the whole problem with the Hawks – they don’t play their best ball against the best teams in the Association. Atlanta relies too much on fast break points and plays too much one-on-one in its half court offense.

That won’t cut it against a defensively disciplined squad like San Antonio.

Voters agree, market unsure

BYU went into Saturday’s game at San Diego State as 2-point chalk after opening 3 and 3.5. The Cougars won 71-69 to run their streak to 15 games. On Monday BYU moved up in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. The week also included an easy home win over Wyoming, but the market clearly thinks the rankings are too lofty.

Aztec nemesis

The last time San Diego State lost at home was last season, also to BYU. The Aztecs had 14 wins in their gym since the Cougars, led by Jimmer Fredette’s 28 points, gave them a home loss. Fredotte’s performance last season was just the warm-up act: Fredette went off for 33 points on Saturday despite recently shaking off a case of mono.

"It's our fifth conference win, so it is really big," BYU coach Dave Rose told the Salt Lake Tribune. "And that's why it is big, because we are in the middle of the conference grind, and every win you get is really important.”

Fredette went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and later drained clichés equally mercilessly.

"We knew it was a big game. We knew it was a huge game for us to come in and get a win. Not a lot of teams are going to do that," Fredette told reporters. "They are a very talented team, they play really well at home, and they've got a great crowd. We knew the challenge ahead of us."

Lobos pack mentality

New Mexico comes into this game having won four straight. The most recent win came Saturday in Albuquerque, 82-64 over Colorado State. The Lobos’ bench chipped in with 27 points and 17 boards. Every Lobo had at least two points and at least two rebounds in the game.

“It was just a really good team effort," Lobos head coach Steve Alford told The Santa Fe New Mexican. "I thought we got good minutes out of everybody we played.”

The Lobos had a 48-30 rebounding edge overall something that didn’t go unnoticed.

"It didn't help us because we got hurt on the boards," Colorado State head coach Tim Miles told the Denver Post. "But we got hurt on the boards because we didn't guard the ball."

Does the market get it now?

Prior to the four-game win streak, the Lobos lost games at San Diego State and home to UNLV. Before that spell, the Lobos were a nifty 10-3-1 against the spread. In the six games since, their ATS mark is 3-3.

This makes the task doubly tough for people wanting to ride the Lobos to an easy cash-in: The Lobos have lost recently when playing quality opponents and the market seems to have a short-term handle on where the number ought to be.

What happened?

BYU is 3-1 straight up and against the spread at New Mexico’s Pit under coach Rose. The one loss came last season when the Lobos embarrassed the Cougars 81-62.

"Last year, we might have played our worst game in Albuquerque," Rose told the Salt Lake Tribune. "They really handled us, and they got us out of the game early and we kind of fell apart and didn't play like ourselves. ... So this group of guys has a lot to prove about going in there and being able to play a competitive game because last year it got away from us."

A couple of trends:

BYU is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings. The over is 8-2 in the last 10 games between these schools. I’m not wild about trends that predate the current roster, but it’s worth mentioning these.

Conversely, BYU’s last four contests have gone under and the under is 5-1-1 in Lobos’ last seven overall.
