    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, January 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers try to pick up a victory in Washington, Kentucky takes on South Carolina, and the Hawks meet the Oilers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has just five games on tap for Tuesday, with Minnesota at New York, Milwaukee at Dallas, Charlotte at Phoenix, Golden State at Sacramento, and the Lakers at Washington. Los Angeles was edged 106-105 in Toronto on Sunday night, despite Kobe Bryant's 27 points and 16 rebounds. Pau Gasol added 22 points for the Lakers in that loss. The Wizards are coming off a 92-78 home loss to the Clippers on Sunday, with Antawn Jamison tossing in 20 points in the matchup. Brendan Haywood was good for 18 points and 12 rebounds that night.

As well, top teams in action around college basketball on Tuesday include Michigan State (at Michigan), Clemson (at Boston College), Kansas State (at Baylor), West Virginia (at DePaul), and Kentucky (at South Carolina). The undefeated Wildcats ran their record to 19-0 on the season with a 101-70 thumping of Arkansas on Saturday. Courtney Fortson tossed in 21 points in that win for Kentucky. The Gamecocks sit at 11-8 on the year after falling 58-56 to Florida on Saturday. Devan Downey had a team-high 36 points in that matchup.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are eight games on the NHL schedule for Tuesday, with Phoenix at Detroit, Washington at the Islanders, Los Angeles at Toronto, Anaheim at Atlanta, Nashville at Columbus, New Jersey at Ottawa, Montreal at Florida, and Chicago at Edmonton. The Blackhawks fell to 35-13-4 with a 5-1 loss in Vancouver on Saturday; Jonathan Toews had the lone Hawks goal in the defeat. The 16-28-6 Oilers are on a 10-game losing skid, falling 4-3 to Dallas in their last game on Friday night. Sam Gagner scored twice for Edmonton against the Stars.

      Lines off the board today

Golden State Warriors at Sacramento Kings: Warriors guards Monta Ellis and Anthony Morrow are listed as questionable.

      Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz

Lines to keep an eye on

New York Knicks opened as a 7-point favorite over the Milwaukee Bucks and the line has fallen to 6 on most books. The betting public may be reacting to a team that lost by a half-a-hundred Sunday being heavily favored over anyone.

      Who's hot

Phoenix Coyotes are 4-0-1 in last five against the over.

Washington Capitals have won nine of their last 10.

Anaheim Ducks have won eight of their last 10.

      Who's not

Phoenix Suns are 2-7 ATS in their last nine.

Detroit Red Wings have lost four of their last five.

North Carolina Tar Heels are 1-6 ATS in their last seven.

      Key stat

Nashville Predators are 22-2-2 against Columbus Blue Jackets since 2006.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

North Carolina is hurting, and so is forward Ed Davis' knee. Tar Heels coach Roy Williams called him ''very questionable'' for tonight's game at rival N.C. State. Davis is the Heels' do-it-all guy, averaging 14.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while leading the team in blocks with 48. His absence has been felt during UNC's current three-game losing streak and will again tonight if he doesn't play against the Wolfpack. UNC is a 1-point pick with a total of 152.

      Biggest game on the slate

New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators: The Senators are riding a six-game winning streak going into tonight's showdown with the Eastern Conference-leading Devils, who have won nine straight meetings with Ottawa. Not since 2007 have the Senators beaten the Devils and this is their shot to show they are contenders. The Senators are -110 with a total of 5.

      Notable quotable

''I'd love to win the Super Bowl. Who wouldn't? Of course, I can't print anything for you guys but I know I'm going out on top one way or the other.''

-- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre discussing his possible retirement with the media after losing to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC championship game. Favre's late interception helped the Saints force overtime but he still holds numerous records from his 19 years in the league.

      Tips and notes

-- A front-loaded schedule may finally be catching up with the Lakers, who played 17 of their first 21 games at home. Despite a 4-1 road swing in mid-December, the Lakers are starting to show some wear and tear after dropping six of their last eight on the road, including a 1-2 start to their current eight-game trip. The Lakers catch the lowly Wizards on Tuesday to start a stretch of five games in seven days. The Lakers are 8-point favorites with a total of 199.

-- The Nashville Predators are looking to scrap their goaltender rotation and name a regular starter; the problem is deciding which one is the man. Pekka Rinne (18-9-2-0) and Dan Ellis (11-10-0-1) have played revolving nets for the past 13 games, going 7-6 during that stretch. Coach Barry Trotz wants one to step forward and Rinne did so in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Avs, stopping 21 of 23 shots with both goals coming on a power play. He is expected to start again tonight, but regardless of which goalie gets the nod both now know that the job is on the line against a team it has beaten five straight. The Blue Jackets are -105 with a total of 5.5.

-- For the past 52 games Clemson's Demontez Stitt has started at point guard for the Tigers ... until tonight's game at Boston College. Stitt, who has been playing through pain in the Tigers' last two games with a foot injury, will take a night off to recover and sophomore Andre Young will get his first college start in Stitt's place. This is no ordinary injury; Stitt truly is the straw that stirs the Tigers' drink and putting an unproven player in his place could lead to offensive disruption for Clemson, which is a 3-point favorite over the Eagles with a total of 135.5.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

ESPN's Joe Lunardi does good job estimating the seedings and field for the field of 65 in March; this will change 1,000 times between now and Selection Sunday, but here is a taste of what he estimates today.....

-- The four #1 seeds would be Kentucky-Kansas-Syracuse-Villanova.

-- If these were the actual seedings, Jayhawks might not be too happy to be playing 9th-seeded North Carolina in the second round.

        -- 8-9 games, usually the most competitive: Xavier-North Carolina, Ole Miss-Texas A&M, Missouri-California and Florida State-UAB.

-- Looks like Maryland would get last at-large bid as a 13-seed; William & Mary would be a 12-seed, an at-large team ranked ahead of the Terps.

-- Lumardi has Siena as a 12-seed, which means the MAAC ain't going to get an at-large bid. The 5-seeds: Baylor-UConn-Vandy-Gonzaga.

-- Cornell of the Ivy League would be a 10-seed, highest seed Ivy League team would have in over a decade.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a rainy night........

        13) First of all, Happy Australia Day to any friends Down Under who might be reading this today; thats Australia's version of our July 4, but it isn't Independence Day for them yet....maybe someday soon.

        12) Watching the Colts, I'm amazed Pierre Garcon didn't get a scholarship to play college football; he went to D-III Mount Union in Ohio.

        11) 13 of the 16 starting QBs in the AFC play for the team that drafted them; only eight of the 16 NFL starters are with their original team.

        10) Last nine Super Bowls, nine different NFC representatives.

        9) Saint-Viking game drew 57.9M viewers, the biggest non-Super Bowl TV audience since the last episode of Seinfeld in 1998.

        8) Will living in New Orleans, a city of a million distractions, make it easier for the Saints to deal with all the Super Bowl hoopla?

        7) I'm very happy for Joe Vitt, linebackers coach for the Saints who began his NFL coaching career with the Baltimore Colts in 1979. Vitt was interim coach of the Rams during the hideous 2005 season; I remember watching all his news conferences on NFL Network (yes, I had DirecTV for while) and he is a football lifer, a tough guy who works hard at his job. Good for him.

        6) I like the Pro Bowl being the week before the Super Bowl, which should be the last football game of the season. Having the Pro Bowl at the site of the Super Bowl is better than having it in Hawai'i.

Elsewhere in the world of sports.........
        5) Hard to believe UConn hasn't won a Big East conference tournament hoop game since 2005. They're always good, its just a weird stat.

        4) Tigers are going to give Austin Jackson a shot at batting leadoff,; seems like a big job for the rookie, but it'll be interesting to follow.

        3) Read on SI.com that Tim Lincecum made his major league debut May 5, 2007; had Giants waited a couple weeks longer, he wouldn't be eligible for arbitration this year. Thats why some teams wait to promote prospects. Lincecum is asking for $13M this year; Giants are offering $8M.

        2) New Astros manager Brad Mills was the guy Nolan Ryan struck out as Ryan passed Walter Johnson on the all-time strikeout list. Mills has been bench coach of the Red Sox the last six years, where he worked with his college roommate at Arizona, Terry Francona.

        1) This Super Bowl is the Redemption Bowl: Jim Caldwell was 26-62 in eight years as head coach at Wake Forest. Sean Payton was fired in 2002 as offensive coordinator of the Giants, two years after they lost Super Bowl to the Ravens. Coaching is easier when the QBs are Manning/Brees.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Dallas Mavericks (-7.5, 197)

Nothing helps the confidence of an NBA team like a good, old-fashioned butt whupping. Just ask the Dallas Mavericks. They were coming off a disappointing loss to the Sixers but bounced back with a 50-point win over the hosting Knicks on Sunday.

“With this team, you just never know,” All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki told the Dallas Morning News.

The Mavs notched the largest margin of victory in club history despite playing without starters Jason Kidd and Erick Dampier. Both are expected to play Tuesday against the Bucks.

Don’t let the offensive outburst fool you. Dallas isn’t the run ‘n’ gun team it once was. The Mavs failed to surpass the 100-point mark in the previous seven games before blowing out New York.

              Pick: Under

Los Angeles Lakers at Washington Wizards (8, 199)

The mood was cheery for Washington backers last week. The Wizards went 2-2 straight up and 4-0 against the spread over a four-game stretch but followed that up with back-to-back, double-digit losses.

"We play games like we're the team coming in 26-8 or something," head coach Flip Saunders told the Washington Post after the Wizards fell 92-78 to the Clippers. "That's got to stop."

The Wizards lack chemistry and the drive to earn tough points in the paint. All of the first 20 shots they took against the Clips were jumpers and only five rattled in.

The odds are stacked against Wizards Tuesday versus the Lakers. The defending champs are coming off losses in two of their last three games but the Wiz are talking like the Purple and Gold are unbeatable.

"That's a helluva challenge," Washington forward Caron Butler said about playing against the Lakers. "We got the champs coming to town. You got to have a ghost out there with you. Got have five-plus-one or something."

              Don’t stop believing, Caron.

              Pick: Lakers

What bettors need to know: Michigan State at Michigan
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Michigan State at Michigan

Big Ten rivalry game tips off Tuesday evening on ESPN when Michigan (10-9, 3-4) hosts conference leader Michigan State (17-3, 7-0) at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor.

Tonight’s contest marks the fourth straight tilt for the Wolverines against a ranked opponent. They return home off road losses at Wisconsin and Purdue last week. UM upset Connecticut, 68-63, here in its most recent home outing on Jan. 17.

                      How they got here

Michigan was a preseason Top 15 pick by many of the scribes this year. Coach John Beilein’s troops won 21 games last season and returned four starters.

After a 3-0 start, the Wolves have fallen on hard times going 7-9 since. Leadership has been a problem. Michigan is 3-7 against the spread (ATS) as a favorite his campaign and 5-0 ATS as a dog. The Wolverines are also 3-1 straight up (SU) and 4-0 ATS in games with revenge this season.

Michigan State, who beat UM 54-42 on the same floor in the only meeting last year, rides an eight-game win streak into this showdown. The Spartans are 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS in Big Ten battles.

MSU was the preseason No. 2 team in the land after finishing runner-up in the NCAA tournament last season. Coach Tom Izzo returned three starters from last year’s 31-win squad.

                      Tale of the tape

Statistically speaking, this game appears to be a one-sided affair. From cov.com NCAA Statistics for the 2009-10 season, here is how these two teams stack up, with ranking against 347 teams in parenthesis -

                      Offensive Field Goal Percentage:
                      Michigan State (15) 45.5
                      Michigan (217) 42.2

                      Defensive Field Goal Percentage:
                      Michigan State (34) 39.7
                      Michigan (210) 44.0

                      Rebound Margin:
                      Michigan State (3) +10.7
                      Michigan (275) –3.3

As you can see, the stats weight heavily in the Spartans favor entering this contest. The question is can a dog-loving rival rise to the occasion in the national spotlight?

                      Personnel problem

Guard Manny Harris (19.2 ppg), the Big Ten’s leading scorer, was suspended for the Purdue game for unsportsmanlike conduct during practice.

Michigan coach Beilein declined to address the matter after the Purdue game. Instead, he referred reporters to a three-paragraph statement released by the university.

"We will meet with Manny and the team again when we return to determine if he has learned enough from this suspension to rejoin the team for Tuesday's game," Beilein said in the release. "I am confident that this learning experience will be valuable in the future to both Manny and our basketball program."

Beilein and Harris have had run-ins in the past. Harris is expected to leave for the NBA after this season.

Michigan has one of the thinnest benches in the Big Ten. Wisconsin's reserves outscored Michigan's 19-1 in an aforementioned six-point win last week and no UM bench player even attempted a shot.

UM’s 10-point loss at Purdue wasn’t that close. The Boilermakers built a 27-point lead midway through the second half before coach Matt Painter started emptying his bench.

                      Ix nay

Freshman C Derrick Nix canned a free throw to clinch a dramatic 65-64 win at Minnesota for the Spartans last Saturday.

Nix ‘improved’ to 6 of 39 from the stripe with the game-winning free throw.

"It was probably one of the more gritty, gutty performances by our team. I thought we were pronounced dead a few times," Izzo said after his team came back from a 13-point deficit to defeat the Gophers.

As a result, MSU holds a game-and-a-half lead over Wisconsin for top honors in the Big Ten Conference this season.

                      Did you know?

Michigan State is 39-28 ATS as a conference road favorite under Izzo. They are 17-7 ATS in this role against .500 or losing teams and 22-21 ATS versus winning opponents.

Michigan is 1-11 SU and 2-10 ATS as a home dog off back-to-back losses this decade.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Detroit Red Wings (-160, 5)

The Red Wings gave up another late lead in a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings Saturday night. Detroit was up 2-0 after the first period, but was outplayed for the rest of the game, opening the door to three unanswered goals by the Kings.

“They controlled the second period, and the third period they capitalized, but it was more than that,” head coach Mike Babcock told reporters. “I don't think it had anything to do with the third (period) as much as the whole game.

“They got on top of our D and ground our D down. And I didn't think as a group of forwards we were able to put enough pressure on their team.”

The Wings have looked tired at the end of games, allowing their three last opponents – the Kings, Wild and Capitals – to come from behind in the third to tie or win the game.

The Phoenix Coyotes have been inconsistent lately but they have topped the total with regularity, going over in four of their last five games.

                            Pick: Over

Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers (-130, 5.5)

Just when it seemed like the Montreal Canadiens were headed for disaster, they picked up two wins in a 24-hour span, beating the Devils 3-1 in New Jersey Friday night and trouncing the New York Rangers 6-0 at home Saturday.

“You realize you have to get better, we got serious about things this week,” Mike Cammalleri, who racked up two goals and two assists in Saturday’s win, told reporters of last week’s losses to Ottawa and the Rangers. “But these are just two wins. We want a third. This is just a start.”

Montreal’s offensive surge has been the key to the team’s recent success. Benoît Pouliot has provided a lift for the Canadiens since being traded from the Minnesota Wild at the end of November, scoring 10 goals in 15 games.

The Florida Panthers have been on a surge of their own winning four of their last six. But they’ve had trouble putting points on the board and have lit the lamp a total of four times in their last four contests.

                            Pick: Canadiens
