    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, January 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers play host to the Penguins, the Celtics take on the Clippers, and the Cavaliers look for a victory down in Miami.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has nine games on tap for Monday, including a matchup between the Cavaliers and Heat in Miami. Cleveland slipped past the Thunder 100-99 at home in their last game on Saturday, as LeBron James picked up 37 points, nine rebounds, and 12 assists. Shaquille O'Neal had 22 points. The Heat knocked off Sacramento 115-84 at home in their Saturday outing, as Dwyane Wade scored 27 points to go along with eight assists. Michael Beasley pitched in with 21 points.

Also on the NBA's schedule for Monday: Indiana at Philadelphia, Orlando at Memphis, Atlanta at Houston, Chicago at San Antonio, Charlotte at Denver, Phoenix at Utah, New Orleans at Portland, and the Clippers at Boston. The Celtics got past Portland 98-95 in their last game on Friday, with Paul Pierce scoring a team-high 24 points in that win. Boston forward Kevin Garnett returned from his knee injury on Friday, putting up 13 points and grabbing four rebounds.

On the college hardwood there's a ranked matchup between Georgetown and Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Monday night, while Kansas plays host to Missouri. The Jayhawks had no trouble with Iowa State in their last game on Saturday, cruising to an 84-61 win behind 19 points and 11 rebounds from Cole Aldrich. The Tigers are coming off a 70-53 win over Nebraska in their last game Saturday. Miguel Paul had 15 points in that win, and Zaire Taylor had 12 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are three games on the National Hockey League schedule for Monday, with St. Louis at Calgary, Buffalo at Vancouver, and Pittsburgh at the Rangers. New York will be looking to shake off an ugly 6-0 loss in Montreal on Saturday night, with star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist getting pulled after allowing four goals on 15 shots. The Rangers and Pens last met in back-to-back games on November 28 and 30, with Pittsburgh scoring 13 goals over a pair of victories.

Bettors best friend (BBF): Monday's wagering tips

      Monday, January 25

      Lines off the board today

Charlotte Bobcats at Denver Nuggets: Carmelo Anthony out with ankle injury.

      Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz

Lines to keep an eye on

The total for the Orlando Magic at Memphis Grizzlies jumped from 203 to 204 shortly after opening. The over is 11-4 in last 15 at Memphis.

      Who's hot

Cleveland Cavaliers have won six of their last seven.

Vancouver Canucks have won four in a row.

      Who's not

San Antonio Spurs have lost four of their last five SU and ATS.

Boston Celtics have lost five of their last six ATS.

Calgary Flames have lost seven of last eight.

      Key stat

Utah Jazz are 7-0-2 ATS in their last nine games.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Carmelo Anthony will not play in Monday night's game against the Charlotte Bobcats after turning his ankle Saturday. The Nuggets struggled without 'Melo in the lineup earlier this month, going 2-3-1 ATS in his absence and then winning six straight SU after his return.

      Biggest game on the slate

Georgetown at Syracuse: Big Monday doesn't get much bigger as these top 15 teams try to stay on Villanova's heels for the lead in the Big East standings. The Orange is 6-1 in the conference and has won six in a row SU, but the Hoyas (6-2 Big East) have won six of their last eight as road dogs. Syracuse is favored by 5.5 with a total of 147.5.

      Notable quotable

''I was just hoping they wouldn't score a couple more points in a row and we'd be down 60.''

-- New York Knick David Lee on Sunday's 128-78 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, the largest margin of defeat at Madison Square Garden in team history.

      Tips and notes

-- Houston Rockets center Chuck Hayes has been hampered by tendinitis in his foot and was limited to two points and no rebounds in 10 minutes of action Saturday. With Yao Ming out for the season, only Luis Scola and Carl Landry are left in the post. That's good news for Hawks center Al Horford, who had 23 points and nine rebounds Saturday. The Hawks have won seven of their last nine and are 1-point underdogs with a total of 197.5.

-- Even without three defensemen in the lineup the Canucks didn't miss a beat in winning their fourth in a row Saturday with no-name backups filling in nicely. Sami Salo and Willie Mitchell are still doubtful for Monday night's game against Buffalo but they have been getting it done with solid goal play by Roberto Luongo and offense, scoring 18 goals during their four-game run. The Sabres are struggling on offense, scoring only 17 goals in their last seven (2-5 SU and ATS). The Canucks are -145 with a total of 5.5.

-- The Missouri-Kansas rivalry dates back to the pre-Civil War era and the hatred is still alive today, especially on the basketball court. The Jayhawks have owned the Tigers at Allen Fieldhouse recently, beating them by 25 last season and 19 the year before. Kansas has been hot since losing its first game and top-ranking to Tennessee, beating Texas Tech by 26 and Iowa State by 23. Sherron Collins leads a balanced attack for the Jayhawks, who are 12-point favorites over Missouri with a total of 148.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- Kentucky will be atop the college basketball Top 25 for the first time in seven years. The poll doesn't matter, since the tournament's the thing, but Wildcats are #1 for first time since '03. Can they go unbeaten?

-- NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin tore ACL in his knee playing hoops, but won't have it operated on until after this season. Thats November. Going to be a long painful season; can't take painkillers driving a car.

-- UAB Blazers won their last three games by total of four points.

-- Padres are adding Matt Stairs, Rockies are keeping Jason Giambi; did the National League add the DH and not tell anyone?

-- The Knicks lost by 50 Sunday. 50. At home. 128-78. Wow.

-- Samford basketball coach Jimmy Tillette had a seizure during his game Saturday and is now in a Birmingham hospital. The stress of coaching is an underrated thing. Lets hope Coach Tillette gets better soon.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

        13) If you know a Saints' fan, especially a longtime Saints' fan, give him or her a holler today and congratulate them. Or hug them. They've earned it.

        12) You wonder if the great Saints of the past: guys like Rickey Jackson, Dalton Hilliard, Dan Abramowicz, Morten Andersen take any pride in the Saints' success (I left Archie Manning and Bobby Hebert out; Hebert is on the radio on Saint broadcasts, Archie obviously roots for the Colts).

        11) Ironic that Drew Brees will lead his Saints into Miami for Super Bowl 44 (no idea what the Roman numeral is); Dolphins had first crack at signing Brees when he left San Diego, but Nick Saban passed in favor of Daunte Culpepper, which explains why Saban's in Alabama now.

        10) Garrett Hartley will never buy another drink on Bourbon Street.

        9) I'm told New Orleans is always fun, but I'm guessing Sunday night was a special level of fun, a night where 43 years of frsutration got let loose in one huge celebration. Going to be lot of headaches Monday morning.

        8) How would you like to be Marc Sanchez' agent this offseason? We're going to get beseiged with Sanchez commercials next season.

        7) Watching FOX, you'd swear Brett Favre was only married player in the game; I know Deanna Favre is hot, but enough already.......

        6) Tony Dungy has coached two NFL teams; the year after he left both of them, that team made the Super Bowl. I'm just saying.......

        5) I don't care what anyone says, good ol' karma helped beat the Vikings; Brett Favre tried to cheat the system by "engineering" his way out of New Jersey after last season. He got his way, but all Minnesota got for it was another bitter loss in the postseason.

        4) Get ready for an excessive amount of Archie Manning interviews over the next two weeks. This is the first time since 1993 the two #1 seeds are in the Super Bowl. Saints will have to beat Warner-Favre-Manning to win their first Lombardi Trophy, three future Hall of Famers.

        3) NFC title game was close, exciting, dramatic, memorable, but in no way was it a well-played game. Two tense teams trying way too hard.

        2) I don't think Joe Buck did a good job giving historical perspective to the Saints' NFC title; the Saints didn't have a winning season until their 22nd year in the NFL. The Superdome had holes in it a few years ago, people died there after Hurricane Katrina. This is a city that needs good things to happen to it and they love football in Louisiana. Congrats to them.

        1) 10:45 pm line on the Super Bowl: Colts, -4.5, total of 56. Drew Brees and the Saints against Peyton Manning, who went to Newman HS in New Orleans and whose dad is one of the all-time great Saints. Should be fun.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Portland Trail Blazers (N/A)

Just when the Blazers thought their injury issues were working themselves out, their backcourt is two men down heading into the week.

Brandon Roy returned from the tender hamstring injury last Wednesday, but left after playing just over 18 minutes. He sat of the next two games against the Celtics and Pistons, in which the team went 1-1 and covered as road underdogs in both, and is expected to miss at least two more games.

The talented two guard leads Portland in scoring with 23 points per game and is the latest player on the team’s laundry list of ailments. Fellow guard Jered Bayless is also out with an injury. He sprained his ankle against Boston and sat out this weekend’s tilt with Detroit.

Bayless, who is listed as questionable, had picked up his production with Roy out of action. He scored 18 points in last week’s win over Philadelphia and netted 12 points against the Celtics before leaving the game.

That leaves the Blazers with just three reserve players and no one to guard New Orleans point man Chris Paul, who is coming off a 26-point, 10-assist performance in a loss to the Nuggets Saturday.

              Pick: New Orleans

Charlotte Bobcats at Denver Nuggets (N/A)

The Nuggets are making their backers sweat in recent games. Denver has gone to overtime in two of its last three contests, including Saturday’s 116-110 win over the New Orleans Hornets.

That win was the Nuggets’ sixth straight victory, however, they have posted a dismal 2-3-1 mark against the spread in this span.

All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony, who scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win, rolled his ankle late in the game but stayed on the floor to ice the game with two free throws.

"It's better than I thought," Anthony told reporters following the game. "It looked pretty bad at first, but it's better than I thought. We'll see how it is (Sunday)."

Denver has had trouble putting opponents away in the second half. The Nuggets took a 79-78 lead into the fourth quarter Saturday and Anthony missed two chances to end the game in regulation.

The Nuggets have an impressive 20-3 record inside the Pepsi Center, but books have pumped up the chalk so much that backers boast just a 12-10-1 ATS mark.

              Pick: Charlotte

Game of the day: Cleveland Cavaliers at Miami Heat
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Miami Heat (+1.5, 190)

                Prior engagement

The Cavaliers and Heat have met once this season, with Cleveland going into Miami as a 1-point underdog and coming away with a 111-104 victory on Nov. 12.

LeBron James (34 points) and Dwyane Wade (36 points) put on an entertaining two-man show as the superstars went a combined 31-of-38 from the free-throw line. James, however, got plenty of help from three teammates who contributed at least 14 points, including 18 courtesy of J.J. Hickson.

In Monday’s meeting, however, the Cleveland supporting cast will be considerably undermanned.

                Infirmary report

While the Cavs are without question one of the best teams in the NBA, they are also one of the most banged up.

Delonte West (7.4 ppg, 2.9 apg) fractured his left ring finger in a victory over the Lakers Thursday night and will be re-evaluated later this week. West joins backcourt mate Mo Williams on the sidelines, as Williams (16.9 ppg, 5.1 apg) is expected to miss up to six weeks with a shoulder injury before a possible late-February return.

“Hopefully it shows the depth of our team; starting Delonte and getting (Daniel Gibson) back into the rotation and seeing if we can hold down the fort until he’s able to come back,” coach Mike Brown told reporters about playing with Williams.

The return of Jamario Moon could alleviate some of Cleveland’s issues, but Moon has missed eight straight games with an abdominal strain and he is listed as questionable.

Miami, on the other hand, is enjoying a clean bill of health.

                King’s court

LeBron (29.9 ppg) has been especially dominant lately and he will surely be looking to put the team on his back to an even greater extent in the absence of West and Williams.

James has scored more than 30 points in seven of his last eight contests, including a 41-point performance in a win over Portland Jan. 10. He is coming off back-to-back 37-point showings in victories over the Lakers and Thunder. LeBron has not scored fewer than 23 points since a trip to Atlanta Dec. 29, a span of 12 games.

“I don't really pay attention to where I rank in the scoring leaders,” noted LeBron, who is now No. 1 in scoring, 0.2 ppg ahead of Carmelo Anthony. “I don't look at myself as a scorer. I go out there and score sometimes, but I'd much rather be known as an all-around player. I’m just playing my game.”

                Hot and cold

The Heat have been remarkably up-and-down this season and their last three games are a perfect microcosm. Last Wednesday, Miami went into Charlotte and got embarrassed by the Bobcats 104-65.

“We have a very, very, very ugly side to us,” coach Erik Spoelstra told the media afterward.

But how did Spoelstra’s team respond? By suddenly showing their other side, of course.

In back-to-back games Friday and Saturday, the Heat crushed Washington 112-88 on the road before returning home and hammering Sacramento 115-84.

“It's in our heads,” explained Michael Beasley (16.2 ppg, 6.7 rpg). “Some games we've got all the energy in the world. Some games we just don't. I think if we stay consistent, there's no limit on how far we can go this season.”

                Trending topics

Although the Cavs have won four straight games and six of their last seven, they are not exactly on fire ATS. Cleveland is 1-4-1 ATS in its last six games overall, 1-4-1 ATS in its last six on the road and 1-4 ATS in its last five against Eastern Conference opposition.

The Heat, on the other hand, are 5-2 ATS in their last seven outings overall, 5-2 ATS in their last seven at home and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 against the Eastern Conference.

Neither the Cavs (20-23-2 O/U) nor the Heat (20-23 O/U) have been particularly strong over/under plays this season, however, the under has been more successful with both. The under is 4-1 in Miami’s last five overall, but the over is 5-2 in Cleveland’s last seven overall.

Head-to-head, the Cavs are 5-2 ATS in their last seven trips to Miami. The over is 4-0 in the Heat’s last four home dates with Cleveland.

What bettors need to know: Georgetown at Syracuse
                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Georgetown Hoyas at Syracuse Orange (-5.5, 147.5)

                        Inside battle

One might think that in Monday’s key matchup will be a battle between Hoyas center Greg Monroe and Orange center Arinze Onuaku. However, Monroe is not a traditional center, often working away from the basket, driving the lane and delivering crisp passes to open players.

Instead of Monroe, Onuaku will likely be matched up against the burly and more traditional post player, Julian Vaughn. Vaughn is arguably the most improved player on the Hoyas team, providing a presence in the post that the team struggled with last season. Because of his improvement, Georgetown is one of the Top 10 teams in the country.

Against Marquette Saturday, Syracuse outscored Marquette 56-22 in the paint and held a 46-to-21 advantage on the boards. Syracuse will need to be dominant against Georgetown if it hopes to improve to 7-1 in Big East play.

“We did a great job of executing the high-low,” Syracuse guard Andy Rautins told the Syracuse Post Standard after the win over Marquette. “We did a better job of half-court offense than we have all season in the first 15 minutes of the second half.”

                        Best starting five?

Georgetown might have the thinnest bench in the conference, but it could boast the best starting five in the country.

It seems that on any given night, a new Georgetown starter is erupting to lead the team. In a win over Connecticut, guard Austin Freeman scored 33 points. In a loss to Villanova on Jan. 17, Greg Monroe scored 29 points. On Jan. 20, Chris Wright scored 27 points en route to a win over Pittsburgh. Having so many scoring options provides matchup nightmares for opposing teams.

In a win over Rutgers Saturday, each of the five starters contributed, with four of the five scoring in double figures. Greg Monroe led the way with 21 points, 14 rebounds and continued to show his skills as the best passing big man in the country with six assists.

"It was basically taking high-percentage shots. I was getting the ball in position where I was getting easy shots. It wasn't anything I was doing in particular,” Monroe, who was 10-of-12 from the field including a 3-pointer, told the Washington Post.

                        Maintaining the lead

On Saturday, Syracuse led Marquette 70-53 with less than four minutes remaining. However, Marquette stormed back to cut the lead to five with just over a minute left.

“I think we lose our poise,” forward Wes Johnson told the told the Syracuse Post Standard. “We think just because there’s two minutes left on the clock and we’re up by double-figures that the game is over. We’ve gotta finish the whole 40 minutes and not 38.”

This has been a growing trend in Big East play, with teams down big coming back. Georgetown was down 15 points to Connecticut at halftime before coming back to win by three. Villanova was down 17 points to Louisville earlier in the season before pushing back to get an eight-point win.

                        Watch the fouls

If Georgetown has a weakness, it is foul trouble. In Georgetown’s loss to Villanova on Jan. 17, Chris Wright found himself in foul trouble and was on the bench for most of the game. Wright finished with six points in the Hoyas' five-point loss.

Forward Julian Vaughn fouled out against Villanova and played just 17 minutes. Without Wright and Vaughn on the floor, coach John Thompson III was forced to play inexperienced freshmen Hollis Thompson, Vee Sanford and Jerrelle Benimon. The three combined to go 1-of-12 from the field.

Benimon has been able to provide some solid minutes for the Hoyas, showing an ability to get to loose balls and grab critical rebound.

"Jerrelle goes up there really hard," forward Julian Vaughn told the Washington Post. "[It's] his niche, it's his thing. He loves to do it."

                        Trends

Georgetown is 7-19 ATS in its last 26 Big East Conference games. Georgetown is 5-2 ATS in its last seven road games. The over is 5-0 in Georgetown’s last five.

Syracuse is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 Big East Conference games. Syracuse is 21-6 ATS in its last 27 games. Syracuse is 12-4 ATS in its last 16 home games.

The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five games between Georgetown and Syracuse. Hoyas are 1-5 ATS in their last six games against the Orange.

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers (110, 5.5)

If the Rangers had any goals left in the tank, they spent them all during last week’s two-game winning streak in which they piled up 14 goals against the Canadiens and Lightning.

New York hasn’t found the net in its past two games, getting shutout by the Flyers and Habs, who defeated the Rangers 6-0 in Montreal Saturday night. The Canadiens actually had one less shot than New York (32 to 31) but erupted for a four-goal second period in which they outshot the Rangers 11-7.

Saturday’s loss was the fourth time New York has been shutout in the past seven games, going 2-5 in that span with an over/under record of 3-3-1.

"Once in a blue moon, sometimes it's going to happen in sports," Chris Drury told the New York Daily News. "But it's happened to us a few times already this year."

Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was yanked six minutes into the second period after allowing four goals on 15 shots. In his last start against the Penguins, Lundqvist gave up four goals on 32 shots in a 5-3 Pittsburgh victory back in late November.

                              Pick: Pittsburgh

St. Louis Blues at Calgary Flames (-160, 5)

The Flames are burning through options on how to stop their six-game losing skid. Calgary has just three wins this month and dropped its sixth straight contest, 3-1, to the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday.

The current losing streak has prompted trade rumors around the team. General Manager Darryl Sutter told the media not to expect a severe overhaul in talent while he is trying to be patient with his team.

“The last 10 games we haven’t played very well,” Sutter told the Calgary Herald. “The first 20, the first 40, we were in and out of first place (in the Northwest Division) on a game-to-game basis — that’s pretty awesome. The last 10 we haven’t played very well, and we need to play better.”

The Flames have struggled at both ends of the ice. During this six-game funk, Calgary has scored only nine total goals – 1.5 goals per game – and has allowed opponents to light the lamp four times a night.

Add to those woes a shaky dressing room where players don’t know where they could end up by the end of the month.

                              Pick: St. Louis
