                      Inside the Paint - Sunday

Gamblers looking to build their bankrolls for the pair of NFL Championships can do so with some early NBA afternoon matinees and then chase or press their bets with an evening showdown in Canada.
Let’s fill you in on all the details for each tilt and break ‘em down!

                      1:00 p.m. EST - L.A. Clippers (19-23 SU, 20-21 ATS) at Washington (14-28 SU, 15-24 ATS)

It’s not the prettiest matchup but gamblers still have the opportunity to make some cash when the Clippers and Wizards go head-to-head at the Verizon Center. The Clippers and Lakers were both kicked out of the Staples Center due to “Grammy Week” which ends on Sunday, Jan. 31.

Mike Dunleavy’s team started their eight-game road trip on Thursday with a 20-point (105-85) loss at Denver. The Clippers have struggled all year on the road (5-14 SU, 8-11 ATS) but they do have a chance to win here against Washington, who hasn’t been great at home (8-13 SU, 8-13 ATS).

Bettors looking at the total should note how the Clippers have watched the ‘under’ go 16-6 at Staples Center, but the ‘over’ has produced a 12-7 mark on the road. Prior to Thursday’s ‘under’ ticket in Denver, the Clips had watched the ‘over’ cash in six straight games. Make a note that the Wizards have seen the ‘under’ go 5-2 in their last seven.

Los Angeles defeated Washington 97-95 on Dec. 14 as a two-point home favorite in their first regular season meeting. The home team has won four straight in this series and the last two wins by the Wizards at home were by double digits. The ‘over’ is on a 3-1 run during this stretch.

                      1:05 p.m. EST – Dallas (28-15 SU, 19-24 ATS) at New York (17-25 SU, 20-21 ATS)

The Mavericks wrap up their five-game road trip on Sunday with an afternoon matinee at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks. Dallas has started the trip by going 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS, and the two losses were by double digits. The offense has been missing for Rick Carlisle’s team (90 PPG) during this strech, and that’s helped the ‘under’ go 4-0. Despite the recent run, Dallas has proven to be a legit team on the road (15-8 SU, 14-9 ATS) this season.

New York has picked things up after a slow start but it still can’t find the right tune at home (10-12 SU, 11-10 ATS). The days of running and gunning under head coach Mike D’Antonio have gone away in his second season, which can be evidenced by a 25-17 ‘under’ record.

Even though Dallas is 2-8 ATS in its last 10, the oddsmakers still made the Mavs short favorites (-3) against New York and deservingly so. They’ve dominated New York recently, winning seven straight overall and three consecutive meetings at MSG. The Mavs have covered five of the games during this stretch, and all three road victories were by double digits. The ‘under’ has gone 5-2 in the last seven.

The Knicks are 5-6 ATS as home underdogs this year.

                      6:05 p.m. EST - L.A. Lakers (33-10 SU, 19-22 ATS) at Toronto (22-22 SU, 21-23 ATS)

Sunday’s three-game slate ends in Canada when the Lakers and Raptors battle from Air Canada Centre. Not surprisingly, Los Angeles opened as a road favorite and even though Toronto has been a tough out at home (14-6 SU, 11-9 ATS) this season, the team has gone just 3-5 ATS as home ‘dogs. And if you look at the six losses that Toronto sustained at home, five of them came against quality opponents in the Magic (twice), Hawks, Celtics and Suns.

It’s more than fair to say that Los Angeles is on the same level with those clubs if not a step above. Phil Jackson’s team hasn’t played many games on the road (10-7 SU, 6-11 ATS) and they haven’t been kind to gamblers backing them outside the Staples Center. After losing at Cleveland (87-93) on Thursday, the Lakers bounced back on Friday with a win and cover at New York (115-105). Sunday’s game will be the third of an eight-game trip for the Purple and Gold and third game in four days, so fatigue could be a factor.

Toronto appeared to be turning the corner and finally got itself back to .500 but the team is 3-4 both SU and ATS in its last seven. The Raptors did rally past Milwaukee (101-96) on Friday but failed to cover as 6 ½-point home favorites.

The Lakers have captured four straight and seven of the previous eight meetings against the Raptors and that includes three of four in Toronto. Total players should make a note that the ‘over’ has cashed in four straight and the last two contests played in Canada saw a combined 222 points posted in each game.

Los Angeles has gone 13-2 against the Eastern Conference this year with both losses coming against the Cavs. Toronto owns a 7-7 ledger against the West.

                        Sunday's Slate

With the NFL taking center stage in the sports betting world Sunday, there aren’t too many marquee games on tap Sunday in college hoops. With that said, there’s an important ACC game that’ll go off at noon Eastern, well before the pigskin action gets going.

Let’s break down Ga. Tech’s trip to Tallahassee to face FSU and also look at a Big Ten game before a few Bonus Nuggets.

                        **Georgia Tech at Florida State**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Florida St. (14-4 straight up, 4-9 against the spread) as a three-point favorite.

--Ga. Tech (14-4 SU, 9-4 ATS) has won three of its last four games since losing at arch-rival Georgia. The Yellow Jackets picked up major resume-building victories vs. Duke, at UNC and vs. Clemson. They are off Tuesday’s 66-64 win over Tigers as one-point home favorites. Freshman center Derrick Favors was the catalyst against Clemson, producing 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. Gani Lawal added 16 points and 10 boards.

--Leonard Hamilton’s team returns to the court eight days after beating Va. Tech 63-58 as a six-point home favorite in Tallahassee. Alabi had 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, while Derwin Kitchen had 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals.

--FSU is mired in a 2-7 ATS slump. Although the Seminoles have won nine of their 10 home games, they own an atrocious 1-5 spread record at home.

--Paul Hewitt’s team has been an underdog three times this year, compiling a 2-1 record both SU and ATS.

--When these teams met in Atlanta on Dec. 20, FSU captured a 66-59 win in overtime as a 5 ½-point road underdog. Despite the extra session, the 125 combined points easily stayed ‘under’ the 135-point total. Ryan Reid paced the ‘Noles with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals while making 7-of-11 shots from the field. Solomon Alabi finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. In the losing effort, Zach Peacock had a team-high 17 points for the Jackets.

--The underdog is 15-3 ATS in the last 18 head-to-head meetings between these ACC adversaries. Six of the last 10 FSU-GT encounters have been decided by three points or less. The ‘under’ has cashed in five straight meetings in this rivalry.

--The ‘over’ is 6-5-1 overall for FSU, 4-1-1 in its home assignments.

--The ‘under’ is 7-5 overall for Ga. Tech.

--Tip-off is scheduled for noon Eastern on Sunday afternoon.

                        **Iowa at Indiana**

                        --LVSC opened Indiana (9-9 SU, 8-9-1 ATS) as a 7 1/2-point favorite.

--Tom Crean’s team has won back-to-back games to improve to 3-3 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers beat Minnesota 81-78 in overtime as 11-point home underdogs last Sunday. Then they went on the road Thursday night and captured a 67-61 victory at Penn St. as 10-point road underdogs. I backed the ‘under’ for a winner in that contest, as the 128 combined points stayed below the 132 ½-point tally. However, I inexplicably refrained from backing IU as a double-digit ‘dog and I’m still disgusted with myself for doing so.

--Devan Dumes scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half to lead IU to the win at PSU. Verdell Jones III had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists but most importantly, he buried a pair of long-range jumpers that were clutch at crunch time.

--Indiana has covered the spread in four straight home games. The Hoosiers own a 7-4 SU record and a 6-5 ATS mark at home this year. This is only the second time they have been single-digit favorites at home. IU lost 72-67 as a 7 ½-point ‘chalk’ vs. Loyola-Maryland back on Dec. 22.

--Iowa (7-12 SU, 5-13 ATS) is in the midst of a nightmare campaign. The Hawkeyes are 1-5 in Big Ten play, although we should mention that they have covered the spread in back-to-back outings. Todd Lickliter’s team beat Penn St. 67-64 as a 3 ½-point home underdog last Saturday. Then the Hawks easily took the money in a 70-63 loss Wednesday at Michigan St. as 21-point underdogs.

--Iowa is winless but a respectable 2-2 ATS as a road underdog this season. However, it’s worth noting that the Hawkeyes have lost nine of their 12 games by double-digit margins.

--Totals have been a wash for Indiana (7-7 overall, 4-4 in its home games). However, the Hoosiers have seen the ‘under’ appear in seven of its last nine games with a total. Meanwhile, Iowa has seen the ‘over’ go 8-6 overall.

--The ‘over’ is on a 7-1 run in the last eight Iowa-IU meetings.

--Iowa had covered the number in eight straight games against Indiana, but the Hoosiers have now taken the cash in three straight meetings. When these Big Ten rivals met at Assembly Hall last year, IU captured a 68-60 win as a 3 ½-point home underdog thanks to Dumes’ game-high 27 points.

--Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network.

                        **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Jeff Lebo’s pending pink slip at Auburn is probably a done deal already, but a win Saturday at Vandy could’ve at least given him and his team some hope. But the Tigers couldn’t hold an 11-point lead at intermission, as the Commodores outscored Auburn 51-30 in the second half to capture an 82-74 win. Bettors backing the Tigers had some anxious moments late in the second half, yet were still able to cash a winner catching 13 points.

--Like Vandy, West Virginia was a great second-half bet Saturday. Like the ‘Dores, the Mountaineers found themselves down double digits at halftime in a home ‘chalk’ role vs. a hot Ohio St. team. Trailing 40-28 at the break, most books made WVU a 7 ½-point favorite for second-half wagers. This equated to the ‘Neers plus 4 1/2 for the game since they were down by 12. Considering how Bob Huggins’ team was initially a six-point favorite, bettors were getting 10 ½ points of value compared to the original line. That thought process proved lucrative, as WVU rallied to collect a 71-65 win. Gamblers on Ohio St. (I was) had to settle for a push.

--I was also on Michigan St. (+115 money line) in its nail-biting 65-64 win at Minnesota as a two-point underdog. The Spartans improved to 17-3 overall and 7-0 in Big Ten play.

--If you haven't already, put Rutgers on your fade radar. The Scarlet Knights have lost eight in a row and have failed to cover the number in each of their last seven outings. With the exception of a nine-point loss at South Fla, RU has lost its six other Big East games by 13 points or more. Georgetown destroyed the Knights 88-63 on Saturday.
