    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, January 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Colts play host to the Jets in the AFC Championship, while the Vikings play in New Orleans in the NFC Championship.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's the Jets versus the Colts in the AFC Championship Game in Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon (3pm ET), with the oddsmakers setting Peyton Manning and company as 8-point home favorites. The Colts had no trouble with the Ravens in the Divisional Round, cruising to a 20-3 home win behind a pair of Manning TD strikes. The Jets knocked off the Chargers in San Diego last week, winning 17-14. Shonn Greene rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown for New York that day.

The NFC Championship Game then has Minnesota at New Orleans (6:40pm ET). The oddsmakers have the Saints pegged as the 3.5-point home favorites for the matchup, with the total set high at 53 points. New Orleans crushed the Cardinals 45-14 in their Divisional Round matchup last week, as Drew Brees connected on three touchdown passes. The Vikings beat the Cowboys 34-3 last week, as Brett Favre went 15-of-24 for 234 yards passing with four touchdowns.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has just three games on the schedule for Sunday, with Dallas at New York, the Lakers at Toronto, and the Clippers at Washington. The Clippers were trounced 105-85 in Denver in their last game on Thursday night, with Craig Smith scoring a team-high 21 points off the bench for Los Angeles in that contest. Chris Kaman added 18 points and five rebounds in that losing cause for the Clippers, who were without guard Eric Gordon (toe) and guard Sebastian Telfair (groin).

As well, there are four games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Sunday, with No. 19 Georgia Tech at Florida State, No. 20 Northern Iowa at Indiana State, Penn State at No. 18 Wisconsin, and No. 9 Pittsburgh at Seton Hall. The Panthers (15-3 SU, 8-6-2 ATS) were defeated 74-66 by Georgetown in their last game on Wednesday night, with Gilbert Brown scoring 20 points in that loss. The Pirates topped Louisville 80-77 in their last matchup.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just three games on the NHL schedule for Sunday, with Boston at Carolina, Dallas at Colorado, and Pittsburgh at Philadelphia. The Penguins will be looking to bounce back from a 6-3 loss to the Capitals on Thursday night, with Sidney Crosby picking up his 33rd goal of the season in that defeat. The Pens and Flyers last met on January 7, with Philadelphia rolling to a 7-4 road win. Jeff Carter and James van Riemsdyk each scored twice for the Flyers in that contest.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Sunday, January 24

      Lines off the board

Los Angeles Clippers at Washington Wizards – Eric Gordon (toe) missed Friday’s game and is questionable.

Los Angeles Lakers at Toronto Raptors – Andrea Bargnani (back) missed Friday’s game and is questionable.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers - Pascal Dupuis (face) and Maxime Talbot (undisclosed) both left Tuesday’s game and are probable.

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Vikings-Saints game incurred a lot of movement Saturday. Most offshore books that were still offering 52.5 on the game have moved to 53 and some shops have even gone to 53.5.

The Colts spread was also on the move Saturday. Most sportsbooks were working with 7.5 in the morning but plenty of 8’s began to appear throughout the day with a few spots holding the spread as high as 9 or 9.5.

      Weather to watch

The conference championship games will not be affected by weather as both are being played in a dome.

Nothing but sunny skies and mid-70 temperatures outline the Melbourne, Australia forecast for Sunday play at the Aussie Open.

      Who’s hot

Sidney Rice – Hauled in 18 catches for 309 yards and six scores in last three games.

L.A. Clippers – Won two of their last three games and are 10-3 ATS during their last 13.

Craig Anderson – Winning goalie in five straight games with a 1.33 GAA in that span.

Northern Iowa Huskies – Won nine of last 10, going 7-2 ATS in those games.

      Who’s not

Adrian Peterson – Has not rushed for more than 100 yards in eight straight and is averaging 3.4 yards per carry during that stretch.

East Carolina Pirates – Lost five straight by an average margin of 16.0 ppg.

Dallas Mavericks – Dropped four of last seven games while going 1-6 ATS during that span.

      Key stat

1,294 – Rushing yards gained from scrimmage by the Colts during the 2009 regular season – the smallest total in the NFL. The Arizona Cardinals were the last team to reach the Super Bowl after ranking last in the league in rushing, posting 1,178 rushing yards in 2008.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Minnesota wideout Percy Harvin missed two days of practice this week with migraine headaches. The AP’s Offensive Rookie of the Year sat out the Vikings Week 14 game because of his lingering illness. Harvin participated in the team’s final practice on Saturday and traveled on the plane to New Orleans, but is still listed as questionable for Sunday. The former Florida Gator caught 60 passes for 790 yards and six scores this season and also returned 42 kicks for 1,156 yards and two touchdowns. It looks as if Harvin will be a game-time decision Sunday and expect the line to move immediately once his playing status is determined.

      Games of the Day

New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts (-7.5, 40)

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints (-3.5, 53)

      Notable quotables

“Our offense is not built to run the ball 35 times. That’s not what we are. I know whose hand I want it in if the game’s on the line. It’s No. 18. So we do what we do to win the game.”

-- Colts’ center Jeff Saturday on the team ranking last in the league in rushing during the regular season.

"This will be as loose a team as you'll ever see going into an AFC Championship Game.”

-- Jets head coach Rex Ryan told the media in regards to Sunday’s game.

      Tips and notes

      - Despite the Colts win over Baltimore last Sunday, the Indianapolis offense has not fared well against the 3-4 defense in postseason play. In 2003 and 2004, the Colts lost in the AFC Championship game to the Patriots who ran the 3-4. The Chargers have always preferred the three down linemen and four linebacker scheme and defeated Indianapolis in the Divisional round and Wild Card round in ’07 and ’08. Dick LeBeau’s vaunted 3-4 set in Pittsburgh took down Peyton Manning and the Colts in the 2005 Divisional round. Indy only managed to score nine touchdowns in those five playoff losses against the 3-4 defense and went 0-5 ATS.

      - Both the Saints and the Colts scored inside of two minutes in their victories last Sunday. These two teams ranked first and second in the league in points scored inside of two minutes in the first half. New Orleans posted 79 points in that scenario while Indianapolis scored 72 points running the two-minute drill.

      - The Raptors installed a 2-3 zone defense versus the Bucks Friday night. The second-half adjustment by coach Jay Triano kept Milwaukee’s offense in check, holding them to a total of 39 points in the third and fourth stanzas. The primary reason for the switch was the ineffectiveness of Toronto’s defense against big man Andrew Bogut in the first half. Bogut dropped in 17 points in the first half but was held to five points after the Raptors went to the zone. It will be interesting to see if Triano utilizes the same defense versus the Lakers Sunday.

        Six-pack for Sunday

-- Last time both top seeds won their conference was 1993, when the Cowboys and Bills did it, meaning likelihood of Colts-Saints meeting in Miami might not be as good as some of us think.

-- Rams fired their trainer, who had been with team for 26 years; they also canned his assistant, whos been with the team 17 years. Rumor is they're going to hire an assistant trainer from the Eagles as new trainer.

-- Miguel Tejada gets $6M for one year from the Orioles. Meanwhile, the Mets are likely to sign Fernando Tatis as a right-handed part of their 1st base platoon. Tejada would have been the better option.

-- Tom Cable will return as Raiders' coach; I guess beating up one of the assistant coaches and your ex-wife isn't that big of an offense anymore.

-- The NFC representative in the Super Bowl hasn't won one yet.

-- 10 years ago today I sat in the last row atop the TWA Dome watching the Rams beat Tampa Bay in the NFC title game. It remains one of the best days I've ever had. If you know someone who is a Saints' fan, today is that day for them. Give them a call and wish them well.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday....

        13) North Carolina is the only ACC team without a road win in conference play so far this season. Go figure.

        12) Bad week for Texas, which led by 8 at halftime at UConn, but Huskies outscored them 54-32 and beat the Longhorns 88-74. Really surprised the game was in Storrs and not the bigger Hartford arena. Strange decision by Texas to agree to play on a much tougher home court.

        11) Kansas State couldn't back up their win over Texas; they lost at home to Oklahoma State 73-69, shooting 35.6% from floor, 19-33 from line.

        10) I love watching Pac-10 games, but this year, the league is so bizarre, it is impossible to predict how these teams will play from day-to-day. Cal and USC are the two best teams; the rest are schizophrenic pretenders.

        9) Arizona ended 5-game skid against the Sun Devils, outscoring ASU in second half 54-31 after trailing by a hoop at the half. Wildcats are lot more athletic than ASU, which shot just 31% from the floor.

        8) Kentucky led Arkansas 57-27 at the half Saturday.

        7) Casey Parsons is a BMOC in Gainesville this weekend, after draining his second game-winning buzzer beater this month. In a game where eight points were scored in the game's final 11 seconds, Parsons nailed a trey on left wing as time expired, giving Florida a 58-56 win over South Carolina.

        6) Kansas has the nation's longest home win streak (56). Siena is next with 32 straight home wins, even though their arena isn't very imposing.

        5) Michigan gutted out a 65-64 win at Minnesota, never leading until late in game; suspension of Gopher PG Nolen, a superior defender, didn't hurt the Spartans, especially star guard Lucas, at all.

        4) Best game of day was probably South Florida 109, Providence 105 in overtime at the Dunkin' Donuts Arena; USF's Dominique Jones went for 46 points and also had 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals. Bulls' bench scored a total of three points- they have very little depth.

        3) Washington is still winless away from Seattle; after losing brutal 62-61 game at UCLA Thursday, they got smoked 87-61 at USC in a tank job by the disappointing Huskies. They're too talented to play that badly.

        2) Disappointed for Iowa State that their best shooter Staiger bolted team last week and went home to play pro ball in Germany. He's entitled to do anything he likes, but the timing stinks, leaving during conference season, after the team's rotation had been set. His teammates deserve better.

        1) West Virginia was down 12 at half at home vs Ohio State, but rallied to beat the Buckeyes 71-65; for a team with no point guard, no center, no real great 3-point shooters, Mountaineers win a lot of games.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Washington Wizards (N/A)

This is the second leg of an eight-game road trip for the Clippers. The team has been awful away from the Hollywood spotlight this season (5-14 SU, 8-11 ATS) and the road woes won’t get much easier for L.A. without the services of Eric Gordon.

Gordon missed Thursday’s game versus the Nuggets with a toe injury and is listed as day to day. The Clips are 3-7 overall and 2-8 ATS without Gordon in the lineup this season.

"That's another scorer, another threat, another person that stretches the defense," Baron Davis said of Gordon. "It's just like every time we gear up to get ready to make a push, two or three people get hurt.”

Los Angeles' management called up JamesOn Curry from the D-League to fill the void in the team’s backcourt as reserve guard Sebastian Telfair is also dealing with an injury.

The Clip-Joint held a one-point lead over Denver at the half Thursday, but the lack of depth on the bench proved to be too much as they were outscored 58-37 in the second half.

L.A. is 0-12 on the road this season when failing to reach the century mark and Washington has held four of its last six opponents to fewer than 100 points.

              Pick: Wizards

Los Angeles Lakers at Toronto Raptors (N/A)

Toronto utilized a different lineup and defense to rally from as many as 15 down and earn a 101-96 win over the Bucks Friday.

The zone defense installed by coach Jay Triano helped slow down center Andrew Bogut who has having his way in the paint while the offensively-potent lineup of Chris Bosh, Jarrett Jack, Jose Calderon, Marco Belinelli and Hedo Turkoglu dumped in 33 fourth-quarter points.

"I didn't imagine it going in," Triano said of the lineup change. "We just had to find a way to create some energy. We just seemed very flat in the first half, lethargic.”

"We just threw them off a little bit. We wanted to give them a different look because their offense was really working,” said Bosh of the zone defense. “But we did throw them off and we stuck with it."

With the Lakers daunting inside presence of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, the Raptors will likely need to break out the 2-3 zone defense again Sunday.

Toronto has won eight of its last nine home games, going 6-3 ATS during that span.

              Pick: Raptors

                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers (N/A)

This will be the second game in less than 24 hours for the Flyers and the expected return of two Pittsburgh players won’t make things any easier for the home team Sunday.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Maxime Talbot and Pascal Dupuis will return for Sunday's intrastate matchup, after both left the game during Thursday’s loss to the Capitals.

The Pens have taken two of three games from Philly in the Pennsylvania rivalry this year and won in a 3-2 shootout on Dec. 17 at the Wachovia Center.

The Flyers regular goalkeeper, Michael Leighton, was given the day off Saturday to rest for Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. (ET) start so Ray Emery started under the net against Carolina.

Leighton gave up four goals on 39 shots in a Flyers 7-4 win on Jan. 7 against Pittsburgh. In four prior games versus the Pens, Leighton is 0-4 with 11 goals surrendered.

                        Pick: Penguins

Dallas Stars at Colorado Avalanche (-165, 5.5)

The Stars finally ended their road losing streak at lowly Edmonton Friday. Prior to scoring 4 goals in that game, Dallas had averaged 2.2 gpg during the winless road stretch.

Goals could come at a premium for the Stars Sunday, with Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson protecting his net better than anyone in the league right now.

"When you have a goaltender that's going to make stops for you at key moments of the game that's going to lift your confidence," said defenseman John-Michael Liles.

Anderson has been the winning goalie during each game of Colorado’s five-game winning streak and has a 1.33 GAA during that span. He’s only allowed two goals in the last three games.

The last four matchups in this series have gone under and expect much of the same as the Avs get their sixth straight behind another great performance from Anderson.

                        Pick: Under
