    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, January 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Devils host the Canadiens, the Suns take on the Bulls, and the Celtics and Trail Blazers hit the hardwood in Boston.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has a busy slate of 13 games on tap for Friday, including Portland at Boston. The Trail Blazers picked up a 98-90 win in Philadelphia in their last game on Wednesday, with Andre Miller scoring a team-high 24 points in the win. Brandon Roy left that game early with a hamstring injury. The Celtics lost 92-86 in Detroit in their last game on Wednesday, with Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce each scoring 21 points in the losing cause. Rasheed Wallace tossed in 16 points.

Also on the NBA schedule for Friday: Sacramento at Orlando, Milwaukee at Toronto, Miami at Washington, Dallas at Philadelphia, Charlotte at Atlanta, the Lakers at New York, New Orleans at Minnesota, Indiana at Detroit, Oklahoma City at Memphis, New Jersey at Golden State, Houston at San Antonio, and Chicago at Phoenix. The Suns had no trouble getting past lowly New Jersey on Wednesday night, with Amare Stoudemire scoring 27 points in a 118-94 victory.

As well, the top two matchups on the college basketball schedule for Friday are Wofford at Charleston and St. Peter's at Niagara. The Peacocks (10-8 SU, 7-5 ATS) knocked off Loyola 48-43 in their last game; Nick Leon scored 20 points for St. Peter's in that win. The Purple Eagles (11-9 SU, 8-10-1 ATS) are coming off an easy 72-56 win over Marist. Rob Garrison led Niagara with 18 points that day.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up three games on Friday, with Dallas at Edmonton, Nashville at Colorado, and Montreal at New Jersey. The Canadiens were defeated 4-3 in overtime by the Blues in their last game on Wednesday night; Benoit Pouliot scored twice for Montreal in that loss, while Carey Price stopped 24 of 28 St. Louis shots. The Devils blanked the Panthers 2-0 in their last game Wednesday night. Martin Brodeur made 22 saves for the shutout for New Jersey.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Friday, January 22

      Lines off the board

New Orleans Hornets at Minnesota Timberwolves – Kevin Love (illness) has missed the last two games and is probable.

Indiana Pacers at Detroit Pistons – Ben Gordon (groin) and Tayshaun Prince (knee) have not played in a week and are questionable. Tyler HanXXXough (ear) missed last two games and is questionable.

Wofford at Charleston – Both teams face the rare college basketball conference back-to-back scenario. Wofford won the first of its two games, 44-42, over Citadel Thursday while Charleston enjoyed a 92-80 victory over Furman.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Thunder-Grizzlies’ total has risen a solid point since opening at 203.5. Memphis has played in two straight overs and the over has hit in seven of the last 10 meetings in this matchup.

      Who’s hot

Charlotte Bobcats – Won nine of last 10 and went 6-4 ATS in that span.

Carlos Delfino – Averaging 18.3 ppg and connecting at a 40 percent rate from 3-point range in last four games.

Benoit Pouliot – Scored six goals in last seven outings with 19 shots on goal.

Colorado Avalanche – Won four games in a row, earning 5.04 units on the moneyline.

      Who’s not

New Jersey Nets – Lost nine consecutive games and four straight ATS. Nets are 7-14 ATS in last 21 games.

Montreal Canadiens – Lost three straight, dropping 3.57 units during that span.

Rider Broncos – Dropped three of last four straight up and ATS.

      Key stat

9 – Consecutive one-point games won by the Mavericks. Dallas has not lost a one-point game since January of 2007 and is one win shy of tying the all-time NBA record of 10 established by the 1959-60 St. Louis Hawks.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kevin Love is expected to return to the Timberwolves lineup Friday after missing two games with strep throat. Minnesota split games without Love against the Sixers and Thunder and went 2-0 ATS. Love missed the first 18 games of the season and saw his team go 7-11 SU and ATS in his absence. He is averaging 15.2 ppg and 12.3 rpg this year.

      Game of the Day

Los Angeles Lakers at New York Knicks (+5, 200.5)

      Notable Quotable

"We've got a state-of-the-art shower; 2020 state of the art. We've got a microwave. Stainless steel. Twelve bunks. Twelve waterbeds. Each one has an individual TV. If you don't have one, we'll stop at Best Buy. In the back we've got a big TV and computer whizzes."

-- Chad Ochocinco told Bengals.com in regards to the Pro Bowl bus he will be taking to Miami that will make various stops to serve food to the needy.

      Tips and notes

      - New Jersey has scored 11 goals in its last seven games, posting two or fewer in five of those outings. The Devils ranks 19th in the league with a 2.65 gpg average and have failed to reach the 3-goal mark in 23 of their 48 games this season.

      - The Eastern Washington Eagles have defeated Idaho State in 18 of the teams’ last 26 meetings. EWU is 20-7 at home since the 1983-84 season versus the Bengals. The Eagles have covered in four straight and eight of the last 10 in this series.

      - Portland guard Brandon Roy reinjured his hamstring in the first half of Wednesday’s game versus Philadelphia. Roy left the game and did not return, and missed two games last week with the same setback. The Blazers went 1-1 straight up and ATS without their leading scorer on the floor and are 13-26 SU and 17-22 ATS sans Roy since 2006.

        Six-pack for Friday

-- Butler survived two Loyola misses in last 0:06, holding onto to beat the Ramblers 48-47 in a tense Horizon League struggle in Chicago.

-- Joe Blanton got $24M for three years from the Phillies. Wow. Shane Victorino is going to get $22M for three years from NL East champs.

-- Seton Hall beat Louisville 80-77; holding off a wild Cardinal rally in last 2:00. Louisville doesn't defend like a typical Pitino team.

-- Allen Iverson will start in the NBA All-Star Game, despite playing in only 19 games this season. Thats just terrific.

-- Mo Williams is out 4-6 weeks with shoulder injury, bad news for the Cavaliers, who beat the Lakers 93-87 Thursday night.

-- Its January 22 and Duke still hasn't won a true road game.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts for a winter weekend....

        13) Conan O'Brien is getting paid $32M to go away from NBC; I've never seen his show, I have no idea if he's funny, but he sure is wealthy. Imagine getting paid $32M just to go away and be quiet? Now thats a good gig.

        12) You know the Oakland Raiders are a disaster when the general manager of the freakin' Bills is making fun of you.

        11) Marquette is 2-4 in Big East play; their four losses are by a total of six points. They blew a 4-point lead in last 0:25 at DePaul Wednesday.

        10) Owners of the Oklahoma City Thunder settled a lawsuit by paying off roughly 1,000 season ticket holders of the Seattle Sonics a total of $1.6M.

        9) If you have an extra $479M burning a hole in your wallet, you can buy the Detroit Pistons, who may be for sale.

        8) Indiana State has lost two OT games in Missouri Valley this year; they were down 16-20 points at the half in those games, but rallied to tie thanks to 16 for 34 and 14 for 27 shooting from the arc. Two tough losses.

        7) Anaheim Ducks have played 10 sets on back/back games this year; they are 7-3 on the first night, 2-8 on the second.

        6) There could be a beer shortage in Belgium soon; unions are protesting job cuts, on grounds that the company is making a ton of money (it is the other businesses the conglomerate owns that are struggling). Over the last eight years, though, beer consumption in Belgium has dropped 20%.

        5) Wade Phillips finally got a two-year extension from the Cowboys; good for him, he seems like a pleasant human.

        4) Florida Gators won 71-66 at Arkansas, a solid road win now that Hogs have Courtney Fortson back at point guard.

        3) Pepperdine gave Gonzaga a tougher battle than you'd think, losing by 7 in Spokane Thursday, as a 24-point underdog.

        2) Viking players will wear earplugs in the Superdome Sunday night, to try and negate the crowd noise which figures to be a factor in the game.

        1) Rick Majerus is complaining about his Saint Louis Billikens being in the Atlantic 14, which is a geographic mess; he thinks the Missouri Valley is a better fit for the school. Problem is, the school president is the person who orchestrated the Billikens' move to the A-14. The big domino that is going to cause the next wave of league changes will be when the Big 11 adds the 12th team so they can have a football playoff.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Dallas Mavericks at Philadelphia 76ers (+3, 195)

Going back to the days of Don Nelson – when the Mavericks first rose to NBA prominence – there wasn’t much defense being played in the Big D.

Under new tutelage like Avery Johnson and now Rick Carlisle, the Mavs improved their defensive efforts but the offseason acquisition of Shawn Marion may have been just what Dallas needed to go deep in the Western Conference playoffs.

The Matrix rejected a Caron Butler jumper with 1.9 seconds left to secure a 94-93 victory over Washington Wednesday. Dallas recorded nine blocks and nine steals in the game.

"Winning on a defensive possession, you wouldn't say that in the past about the Mavericks," Jason Kidd said. "This year, we've really focused on playing defense. We looked at the last champions and said, 'Hey, they all played defense.'”

The Mavs blew some early leads Wednesday and failed to cover against an inferior Wizards team, but don’t expect the team to play down to the level of competition two games in a row.

              Pick: Mavericks

Charlotte Bobcats at Atlanta Hawks (-6.5, 189.5)

A big reason for Charlotte’s turnaround season has been improved play on the defensive side of the ball. The Bobcats rank first in the NBA in points allowed, holding opponents to a 92.2 points per game average.

On Wednesday, Charlotte cranked up the intensity a notch and held the Heat to a season-low 65 points. Miami shot less than 29 percent from the floor and only hit two of its 23 3-point attempts.

The Hawks are no slouch either when it comes to shutting down opposing offenses. Teams are posting 97.4 ppg versus the sizzling hot team from Hotlanta and over the last five games the Hawks have held opponents to a mere 94 points per outing.

The over has cashed in three straight in this series, but don’t let that fool you. Not one total during those games exceeded 183 points and these two teams combined to score 190.3 ppg during that stretch.

The last time the total was posted at 189.5 in this series came in November of last season and the ‘Cats and Hawks combined to score 171 points.

              Pick: Under

Helpside defense: NBA betting news and notes
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Celtic slide

The Boston Celtics have been a bit more banged up than most contenders this season. Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Marquis Daniels, Rasheed Wallace and even All-Star Paul Pierce have missed time with injuries.

But the one player the Celtics cannot contend without is Kevin Garnett. That was evident in last year's postseason and is evident again this season.

Garnett has not played since Dec. 28, missing nine games with an injury to his surgically repaired knee. The Celtics are 4-5 straight up and against the spread in that stretch, with the four wins against Toronto twice, at Miami in overtime and at hapless New Jersey. Boston has lost three straight home games.

"(I'm) being smart about injuries, so they don't get worse," Garnett told reporters Tuesday. "I think I learned that last year the hard way. I'm trying to be patient and actually listen."

Garnett's numbers aren't spectacular. He is averaging 15 points and 7.6 rebounds. But he is the team's defensive anchor and emotional leader. He practiced Tuesday and should return Friday vs. Portland, skipping Wednesday's game at Detroit.

                Charlotte's web

The Charlotte Bobcats are starting to look like Larry Brown's 10th playoff team.

Brown's ability to maximize his talent, the emergence of Gerald Wallace as a borderline All-Star and the acquisition of Stephen Jackson have made the Bobcats a very dangerous team at home, the first step in the transition from pretender to contender.

Charlotte's 17-4 mark at Bobcats Arena is fourth-best in the NBA, trailing only conference finals participants the Los Angeles Lakers (23-3), Denver (18-3) and Cleveland (17-3). The Bobcats are 13-8 ATS at home this season.

Charlotte won the first five games of its season-high six-game homestand (3-2 ATS) entering Wednesday's game vs. Miami. The next test for the Bobcats will be whether they can compete as well on the road. Beginning with Friday's game in Atlanta, they play seven of their next eight away from home.

Against the spread, Charlotte is 11-7 in road games. However, this is its first extended road trip and includes stops in Denver and L.A., two places that are very tough to win.

                Dethroned

Through the first two months of the season, there was not a better return on investment than the Sacramento Kings. After beating Denver at home on Dec. 28, the Kings were 14-16 overall and 18-10-2 ATS, surprising just about everyone except themselves.

The Kings figured out how to win that game without Tyreke Evans, but lost the next two without their rookie sensation, starting a tailspin that has seen them lose nine of 10 straight up while going 2-7-1 ATS.

The return of injured star guard Kevin Martin last week was supposed to give the Kings a boost but instead has created some acclimation issues. Beno Udrih, the team's best point guard, has seen his minutes reduced as coach Paul Westphal is playing Evans and Martin together.

The Kings still have both Florida stops remaining on their season-high six-game road trip, where they are looking for their first win and second cover. Their current slide has dropped them from first to ninth in the ATS standings (20-17-3).

In other words, the "Cowtown" team is no longer a cash cow.

                On the schedule

Friday, Jan. 22, Houston at San Antonio

The Spurs have finally started beating some winning teams, going 3-1 straight up and ATS in a recent stretch. Meanwhile, the Rockets have used a pair of overtime wins to hide some slippage. They are 1-7 ATS (3-5 SU) in their last eight games.

Saturday, Jan. 23, Philadelphia at Indiana

There are three teams in the NBA with better records on the road than at home - Boston, Dallas and Philadelphia, which is 7-14 straight up but 13-8 ATS. Indiana has allowed at least 100 points in 13 of its last 14 games.

Monday, Jan. 25, Phoenix at Utah

On Wednesday, the Suns began a stretch where they play five of six at home. This is the only game on the road, where they have lost 11-of-12 straight up and 4-8 ATS. The Jazz may appear to be slipping, but they are 14-7 ATS at the Delta Center, which is still a tough home court.

Montreal Canadiens at New Jersey Devils (-200, 5)

New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur didn’t have a hard time earning his seventh shutout of the season and fifth in the last 14 games, in a 2-0 win over the Florida Panthers Wednesday night. Brodeur only had to make 22 saves to avoid a fourth consecutive loss for the Devils.

“Defensively, we played really well,” Brodeur told reporters. “I just had to make a couple saves. We didn't have the luxury of having goals, but we pulled it off.”

New Jersey’s defense might be in full form but the same can’t be said for the offense, which has scored three goals or more only once in the last seven games.

“It was a much better effort than before,” Devils head coach Jacques Lemaire told the New York Post following Wednesday’s win. “I think the guys are at about 80 percent of what we can do. We can play a lot better than we did tonight.”

Montreal has had offensive problems of its own and head coach Jacques Martin is still trying to play with his lines in an effort to spark some scoring opportunities. So far, he hasn’t been very successful.

The under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.

                            Pick: Under

Dallas Stars at Edmonton Oilers (+100, 5.5)

The Edmonton Oilers finally thought they were about to put an end to their eight-game losing streak Wednesday night. Edmonton was leading the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 late in the third, but allowed a late regulation goal and an early overtime one to fall 3-2.

“It's definitely pretty frustrating the way we've been losing games lately,” Sam Gagner told reporters after the game. “We had a lot of passion and intensity and played the game the right way. We have to regroup and use our anger the right way and be better.”

The main culprit for the Oilers’ ninth straight defeat was their inefficient penalty kill. All three of Vancouver’s goals came on power plays.

Edmonton might have an easier time using its anger in the right way against the Dallas Stars. The Stars have the 12th-best power play in the league, are in the midst of a 1-9-3 road skid and will have faced the Canucks the night before.

                            Pick: Oilers
