    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, January 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers battle the rival Flyers, Gonzaga meets Pepperdine, and the Lakers and Cavaliers have a rematch in Cleveland.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has just two games on tap for Thursday, with the Clippers at Denver and the Lakers at Cleveland. Kobe Bryant and company are coming off a 98-92 home win over Orlando on Monday night, with Pau Gasol leading the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles in that contest. Bryant picked up 11 points to go along with seven assists. The Cavaliers played on the road against the Lakers on Christmas Day, cruising to a 102-87 victory. Mo Williams had a team-high 28 points for Cleveland that day, while LeBron James tossed in 26 points. Bryant was good for 35 points and nine boards in that loss for the Lakers.

As well, the lone ranked team in action around college basketball on Thursday is No. 15 Gonzaga, which gets a visit from Pepperdine. The Bulldogs improved to 14-3 (8-5-1 ATS) with a 68-50 win over San Diego in their last game on Saturday. Elias Harris tossed in 20 points for Gonzaga in that contest, while Steven Gray was good for 17 points. The Waves sit at 7-12 (5-10 ATS) after knocking off San Francisco 83-68 last game; Lorne Jackson tossed in 21 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the National Hockey League offers up a busy slate of 13 games for Thursday night, including the Rangers at Philadelphia. New York and Philly last met back on December 30, when the Flyers rolled to a 6-0 road win. Simon Gagne had a hat trick and added an assist for Philadelphia in that contest, and Michael Leighton stopped all 22 of the Rangers' shots. Henrik Lundqvist was yanked from the net for New York that day after allowing three goals on 11 shots.

Also on the ice on Thursday: Carolina at Atlanta, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Florida at the Islanders, St. Louis at Ottawa, Washington at Pittsburgh, Detroit at Minnesota, Nashville at Phoenix, Chicago at Calgary, Dallas at Vancouver, Anaheim at San Jose, Buffalo at Los Angeles, and Columbus at Boston. The Bruins will be looking to bounce back from a 5-1 home loss to the Senators on Monday afternoon. Tim Thomas gave up three goals on nine shots in that defeat.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Thursday, January 21

Lines to keep an eye on

Washington Capitols at Pittsburgh Penguins – Oddsmakers seem to be in a quandary over where to set the line for this marquee matchup. The moneyline can be found anywhere from -120 to -135 in favor of the Pens while the puckline has jumped from an opener of +213 to as high as +222.

      Who’s hot

Arkansas State Red Wolves – Won three in a row and seven of last 10 while going 6-1 ATS during that stretch.

New York Islanders – Gone 7-2-1 in last 10 outings (+6.12 units) with five of those wins coming as underdogs.

Carmelo Anthony – Averaged 30.5 ppg over the last four with the Nuggets going 3-1 SU and ATS in that time frame.

      Who’s not

Boston Bruins – Lost three straight home games, scoring a total of four goals during that span.

Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans – Dropped eight of last nine and are 1-6 ATS in their last seven.

Cam Ward – Has lost three consecutive starts with a 3.35 GAA and .903 percent save rate.

      Key stat

14.0 – Margin of loss in Penn State’s two Big Ten home games this season. The Nittany Lions were picked to finish 7th in the Big Ten preseason poll, but are currently dead-last in the standings after starting the season 0-5 (2-3 ATS) in conference play. Penn State opened as a 9-point favorite over Indiana on Thursday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Two of Gonzaga’s starters were banged up in the team’s 68-50 win over San Diego Saturday. Matt Bouldin (15.3 ppg) fell on his shooting hand during the game while the Zags leading scorer, Elias Harris (15.5 ppg), injured his back. Both are listed as probable for Thursday’s game versus Pepperdine, but with a large pointspread of 24.5, even limited action from these two integral pieces of the Bulldogs’ offense could be the difference between a cover and loss.

      Games of the Day

Los Angeles Lakers at Cleveland Cavaliers (-3.5, 195.5)

Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets (-10, 210)

      Notable Quotable

"You have a game that isn't that great and people are like, 'What's wrong with Warner?' That wears on you. You don't have the joy and the fun and satisfaction of having one of those great games because everybody expects you to. You never get to exhale."

-- Said an exasperated Kurt Warner who is a two-time league MVP but turns 39 in June and appears to be on the brink of retirement.

      Tips and notes

      - The Nuggets are guilty of occasionally playing to their level of competition this season. Six of Denver’s 14 losses have come against teams that are currently under the .500 mark. The Nuggets have lost to the Kings twice this year are 0-5-1 ATS in those six games. One of the other six casualties came against the Clippers, who Denver hosts Thursday as 10-point home favorites.

      - The Penguins rank 26th in the league in power-play conversion percentage (16.0), but have netted six of their last 17 penalty opportunities. Pittsburgh is 21-2-0 when they score a power-play goal this season.

      - South Alabama has owned North Texas in their Sun Belt series. The Jaguars reeled off six straight wins over the Mean Green from 2004-07 and hold a 13-4 overall advantage. However, the last three games between these teams have been decided by a combined six points with North Texas covering in each. The Mean Green are favored for the first time since 2006, laying 5.5 points at home.

        Six-pack for Thursday

Spring training starts four weeks from today; here are some notes that might make you feel a little more springlike.......

-- Joel Pineiro gets $16M, two years from the Angels, in case anyone has forgotten what a great country this is. He isn't that good.

-- Mariners gave Felix Hernandez $78M for five years, putting them in position to be frontrunners in AL West this season. He is that good.

-- Andre Ethier gets $15.25M for two years from the Dodgers.

-- Doug Davis gets a $5.25M, one-year deal from Milwaukee, further proof that its great to be lefthanded.

-- Zach Duke (11-16, 4.06 LY) gets $4.3M from the Pirates. 11-16 for the Pirates is a lot better than your average 11-16 season.

-- Tim Lincecum is asking for $13M; Giants are offering $8M; instead of wasting the arbitor's time, how about just settling on $10.5M?

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday's List of 13: Wrapping a Wednesday of basketball......

        13) Memphis' tremendous 64-game C-USA winning streak came to an end Wednesday, when UTEP came to town and upset the Tigers, 72-67.

        12) NC State not only beat Duke, they beat them fairly easily, 88-74; I'm very happy for Wolfpack point guard Gonzalez, who was overmatched as a freshman and got booed by the rabid fans in Raleigh; safe to sat they ain't booing anymore. Sidney Lowe is building a nice program at State.

        11) North Carolina has lost three games in a row, first time they've done that since Roy Williams has been the Tar Heels' coach. Wake Forest put a beatdown on the Heels in Chapel Hill, 82-69.

        10) DePaul stunned Marquette 51-50; Warriors had been living on 3's- in last three games, they were 36-70, but against a hungry Blue Demon squad, Marquette hit just 4-12 beyond arc. Big win for interim coach Webster.

        9) Georgetown gave Pitt their first Big East loss, 74-66. Panthers are one of the most pleasant surprises in the whole country, but not tonight.

        8) LSU's Tasmin Mitchell scored 38 points, but Auburn put five guys in double figures and upset the slumping Bayou Bengals, 84-80.

        7) ABC's Jeff Van Gundy, who turned 48 Tuesday, ran his first marathon in Houston last weekend. Running 26 miles and 365 yards takes mental toughness, in addition to the obvious physical stamina needed. I'd never, ever do it. Hell if I drive 26 miles I'm looking for the drive-thru at Wendy's.

        6) Baylor is pretty good; they went toe-to-toe with Kansas in Lawrence and only lost by six; game was tied at the half.

        5) Marshall is pretty good too, losing 68-60 to West Virginia in the annual in-state rivalry game that means a lot more to the Thundering Herd. You've got to think Huggins was watching Marshall's freshman center Whiteside and wondering why his Mountaineers didn't recruit the talented big kid.

        4) Central Florida upset 12-point favorite Houston 78-71; big win for the young Golden Knights. Bad loss for Tom Penders' Cougars.

        3) For second game in row, UAB came back to win by a point; they might be the worst 16-2 team in recent memory, having trailed by 24 with 14:41 left at SMU Saturday. Wednesday, they edged Southern Miss by a point after trailing 27-20 at halftime, and at home.

        2) Mets-Marlins are going to play a three-game series in Puerto Rico at the end of June. Expos did this a few years ago. Maybe by then the Mets will have a signed a major league-caliber catcher.

        1) Seriously, how many times in the last ten years have North Carolina and Duke lost on same night? Plus, Memphis' winning streak ended, DePaul won as a 13-point underdog? Not your average Wednesday.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets (-10, 210)

With Chris Kaman’s return to the starting lineup, the Clip-Joint boast a formidable tandem down low which includes big man Marcus Camby.

But the unheralded tertiary member of L.A.’s frontcourt is third-year player out of Boston College, Craig Smith.

At 6-7, 250-pounds, Smith looks like an defensive lineman, but has the offensive prowess and footwork of some of the best power forwards in the league.

Smith posted 18 points and four rebounds in 18 minutes of action in Monday’s 106-95 win over the Nets.

"I was just trying to be a playmaker, whether it's scoring or trying to find someone else to score," Smith told reporters after the game.

The Clippers bench is averaging 32.7 ppg during the last three games and Smith is a big reason for that prolific contribution. The Rhino has registered 17.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg while averaging just over 22 minutes of play during the team's last three outings.

L.A.’s current starting lineup of Eric Gordon, Baron Davis, Kaman, Rasual Butler and Camby is 8-1 this season. All systems are a go for Thursday night’s bout versus the Nuggets and with Smith coming off the bench, double digits for the Clippers is just too many points to pass.

The Clips defeated Denver in L.A., 106-99, as 9-point pups in the teams’ only meeting so far this season. The Nuggets are 1-3 straight up in their last four back-to-back situations and 0-3-1 ATS in that span.

                Pick: Clippers

                  Celtic slide

The Boston Celtics have been a bit more banged up than most contenders this season. Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Marquis Daniels, Rasheed Wallace and even All-Star Paul Pierce have missed time with injuries.

But the one player the Celtics cannot contend without is Kevin Garnett. That was evident in last year's postseason and is evident again this season.

Garnett has not played since Dec. 28, missing nine games with an injury to his surgically repaired knee. The Celtics are 4-5 straight up and against the spread in that stretch, with the four wins against Toronto twice, at Miami in overtime and at hapless New Jersey. Boston has lost three straight home games.

"(I'm) being smart about injuries, so they don't get worse," Garnett told reporters Tuesday. "I think I learned that last year the hard way. I'm trying to be patient and actually listen."

Garnett's numbers aren't spectacular. He is averaging 15 points and 7.6 rebounds. But he is the team's defensive anchor and emotional leader. He practiced Tuesday and should return Friday vs. Portland, skipping Wednesday's game at Detroit.

                  Charlotte's web

The Charlotte Bobcats are starting to look like Larry Brown's 10th playoff team.

Brown's ability to maximize his talent, the emergence of Gerald Wallace as a borderline All-Star and the acquisition of Stephen Jackson have made the Bobcats a very dangerous team at home, the first step in the transition from pretender to contender.

Charlotte's 17-4 mark at Bobcats Arena is fourth-best in the NBA, trailing only conference finals participants the Los Angeles Lakers (23-3), Denver (18-3) and Cleveland (17-3). The Bobcats are 13-8 ATS at home this season.

Charlotte won the first five games of its season-high six-game homestand (3-2 ATS) entering Wednesday's game vs. Miami. The next test for the Bobcats will be whether they can compete as well on the road. Beginning with Friday's game in Atlanta, they play seven of their next eight away from home.

Against the spread, Charlotte is 11-7 in road games. However, this is its first extended road trip and includes stops in Denver and L.A., two places that are very tough to win.

                  Dethroned

Through the first two months of the season, there was not a better return on investment than the Sacramento Kings. After beating Denver at home on Dec. 28, the Kings were 14-16 overall and 18-10-2 ATS, surprising just about everyone except themselves.

The Kings figured out how to win that game without Tyreke Evans, but lost the next two without their rookie sensation, starting a tailspin that has seen them lose nine of 10 straight up while going 2-7-1 ATS.

The return of injured star guard Kevin Martin last week was supposed to give the Kings a boost but instead has created some acclimation issues. Beno Udrih, the team's best point guard, has seen his minutes reduced as coach Paul Westphal is playing Evans and Martin together.

The Kings still have both Florida stops remaining on their season-high six-game road trip, where they are looking for their first win and second cover. Their current slide has dropped them from first to ninth in the ATS standings (20-17-3).

In other words, the "Cowtown" team is no longer a cash cow.

                  On the schedule

Friday, Jan. 22, Houston at San Antonio

The Spurs have finally started beating some winning teams, going 3-1 straight up and ATS in a recent stretch. Meanwhile, the Rockets have used a pair of overtime wins to hide some slippage. They are 1-7 ATS (3-5 SU) in their last eight games.

Saturday, Jan. 23, Philadelphia at Indiana

There are three teams in the NBA with better records on the road than at home - Boston, Dallas and Philadelphia, which is 7-14 straight up but 13-8 ATS. Indiana has allowed at least 100 points in 13 of its last 14 games.

Monday, Jan. 25, Phoenix at Utah

On Wednesday, the Suns began a stretch where they play five of six at home. This is the only game on the road, where they have lost 11-of-12 straight up and 4-8 ATS. The Jazz may appear to be slipping, but they are 14-7 ATS at the Delta Center, which is still a tough home court.
