            Inside the Paint - Wednesday

Wednesday’s pro basketball card features 13 games on the hardwood, including five non-conference battles.

Let’s take a closer look at those contests below.
Dallas (27-14 SU, 19-22 ATS) at Washington (14-26 SU, 14-23 ATS)

After getting ripped at Toronto (88-110) on Sunday, the Mavericks bounced back Monday with an impressive win at Boston (99-90). Dallas continues its five-game road trip tonight when it visits Washington. Rick Carlisle’s team has been a nice team to back on the road this year, evidenced by a 14-7 ledger, both SU and ATS. The Mavericks join the Celtics, Cavs and 76ers as the only teams to have more wins on the road than at home this year.

Dallas will be looking to avenge an opening night loss at home to Washington (91-102). The Wizards had Gilbert Arenas in that game and he lit up the Mavs for 29 points. Since then, the All-Star guard has been suspended indefinitely for his gun saga. Since he departed the team, the Wizards have gone 3-5 SU and 4-4 ATS without “Agent Zero” in the lineup, which includes two straight wins at home over Sacramento (96-86) and Portland (97-92).

Will the Mavericks be the next victim at Verizon Center? Prior to the pair of victories and covers against the Kings and Trail Blazers, the Wizards were just 6-11 SU and 5-12 ATS at home. Also, Washington (4-11 SU, 5-8-2 ATS) against the West this year and that includes the last two wins, plus the victory against Dallas back in October.

Portland (25-17 SU, 21-19 ATS) at Philadelphia (13-27 SU, 17-23 ATS)

Portland continues its four-game East Coast trip on Wednesday when it faces the 76ers. The Trail Blazers came up short against Washington (92-97) on Monday, which came after the team produced a pair of double-digit wins at home versus Milwaukee (120-108) and Orlando (102-87). The Blazers have gone 9-10 SU and 10-8 ATS outside of the Rose Garden this year.

Philadelphia was 3-1 both SU and ATS in its last four games and had a great chances to go 4-1 but the team choked a big lead and fell to Minnesota (103-108) in overtime on Monday. The 76ers haven’t played well at home this year, going 6-13 SU and 4-15 ATS. And, Philadelphia is 6-12 SU and 8-10 ATS versus the Western Conference this year.

One thing going for the 76ers in this matchup is confidence. Philadelphia is 4-1 both SU and ATS in the last five meetings against Portland, including a 104-93 victory at the Rose Garden on Dec. 28 as a 6 ½-point road underdog. Three of the last five during this stretch have gone ‘under’ the number.

Sacramento (15-25 SU, 22-16 ATS) at Atlanta (26-14 SU, 25-14 ATS)

Sacramento could be in trouble on Wednesday when it will be playing the fourth game on the road in a six-game road trip. The Kings dropped the first two by double digits and if it wasn’t for Charlotte choking, they would’ve failed to cover the third game too. The team stands at 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS and total players should note that the ‘under’ is on a 7-1 run too.

The team heads to Atlanta, who is fresh off a 94-91 home loss to Oklahoma City. The setback snapped a three-game winning streak for the Hawks. Atlanta still remains the best team ATS (26-14) in the league and they own a solid 11-4 SU and 10-5 ATS mark against the Western Conference this year.

Atlanta opened up as a 10-point home favorite against Sacramento and the number seems fair. The Hawks are 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in the last four encounters against the Kings. The ‘over’ is 3-1 over this span.

New Jersey (3-37 SU, 13-26 ATS) at Phoenix (24-18 SU, 21-20 ATS)

An old handicapping system in the NBA is to fade any team in their first home game after a lengthy road trip. With that being said, you would bet against Phoenix tonight, which can be argued but you also be laying cash on New Jersey, which hasn’t been a good proposition this year. The Suns saw a little bit of everything on their recent road trip, which watched the club go 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS. Phoenix blew a big lead to Indiana (114-122) and followed that up with a buzzer beater loss at Atlanta (101-102). Then, they closed with rough losses to Charlotte (99-125) and Memphis (118-125). The ‘over’ went 3-1 during this stretch.

Phoenix now turns its attention to New Jersey, who has dropped eight straight (3-5 ATS) games. Six of the Nets’ losses came by double digits and five of the last six saw teams easily bust the century mark on their defense. NJ has been outscored by an average of 13 PPG (103-90) on the road, which has produced a 1-20 SU and 7-14 ATS. Like clockwork, the oddsmakers opened Phoenix as a 12 ½-point home favorite at home against New Jersey. The Suns have gone 15-4 SU and 10-8 ATS at home this year but they’re 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS in the last three at US Airways Center.

Not that you’d be surprised but the Nets (0-16 SU, 4-12 ATS) are winless against the Western Conference this year. Phoenix has been inconsistent against the East, going 11-8 SU and 10-9 ATS.

            Chicago (18-21 SU, 17-20 ATS) at L.A. Clippers (18-22 SU, 19-20 ATS)

Chicago still remains one of the hottest teams (8-4 SU, 9-3 ATS) in the league but the club was cooled off on Monday by Golden State (97-114). The Bulls continue their seven-game road trip and tonight’s matchup against the L.A. Clippers could be the one game they win. Chicago has gone 4-14 SU and 7-11 ATS on the road this year, and two of the wins came against the Cavaliers and Celtics.

The L.A. Clippers can’t be compared to Cleveland and Boston but Mike Dunleavy’s team has been a tough out at Staples Center. The Clips have gone 13-9 SU and 11-10 ATS at home this year behind a defense that has held opponents to 95 PPG in Los Angeles, which has helped the ‘under’ 16-6. Don’t run to the counter and pound the ‘under’ just yet, since L.A. has watched the ‘over’ cash in five straight.

Chicago has won and covered three straight against the Clippers, including a pair of double-digit wins at Staples Center. Again, be careful fading L.A. because it’s proven itself against the East (8-5 SU, 8-4-1 ATS).

              Wednesday Wagers

Bettors have options galore tonight with a monster card of college basketball. The action starts at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network with Michigan St. heavily favored over Iowa. North Carolina will try to snap out of its funk when it takes on Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. Finally at 9:00 p.m., Baylor will try to upset Kansas. Let's take a look...

              **Wake Forest at North Carolina**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultant opened North Carolina (12-6 straight up, 6-10 against the spread) as a nine-point favorite. However, as of early this afternoon, most betting shops had the Tar Heels reduced to six-point 'chalk' with a total of 157.

--UNC has lost back-to-back games and three of its last four, including Saturday’s 73-71 loss to Georgia Tech as a 6 ½-point home favorite. The Tar Heels rallied from 20 points down to take the lead late in the second half, only to lose when the Yellow Jackets made more plays in the final minute. Williams Graves had 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the losing effort.

--After the loss to Ga. Tech, UNC head coach Roy Williams told the Associated Press, “We were so tentative, so tight early, it was unbelievable. You can't expect things to be given to you. In the ACC, you have to play and you have to take things. You have to compete.”

--Wake Forest (12-4 SU, 6-7 ATS) is looking to bounce back from Sunday night’s 90-70 loss at Duke as a 16-point underdog. The 160 combined points sailed ‘over’ the 148 ½-point total. Al-Farouq Aminu had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Chas McFarland finished with 17 points and 10 boards in the losing effort.

--Wake’s four losses have come vs. William & Mary, at Purdue, at Miami and at Duke. The Deac’s best road win came at Gonzaga. They own quality home wins over Richmond, Xavier, N.C. St. and Maryland, with each of those victories coming in overtime except for the triumph over the Wolfpack.

--Dino Gaudio’s squad is 2-2 ATS in four games as an underdog. Meanwhile, UNC is 3-2 ATS in five single-digit ‘chalk’ spots.

--North Carolina had won all of its 11 games at the Dean Dome before Ga. Tech came to town this past weekend. However, the Tar Heels are just 4-6 ATS at home.

--Before falling to Ga. Tech, UNC got spanked 83-64 at Clemson as a five-point road underdog last week. If the Tar Heels lost to Wake, it would be their first three-game losing streak in ACC play in four seasons.

--UNC sophomore center Tyler Zeller is out until at least mid-February with a broken foot. Zeller was averaging 9.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in UNC’s first 16 contests.

--Bettors should check the injury status of a pair of UNC players on Wednesday. As of Tuesday afternoon, sophomore center Ed Davis was listed as “questionable” with a sore knee, while Larry Drew II was also “questionable” with an ankle injury. Davis averages a double-double, 14.7 PPG and 10.1 RPG. Drew is averaging 8.4 points and a team-high 6.4 assists per contest.

--These teams met only once last season with Wake capturing a 92-89 win as a 6 ½-point home underdog. Jeff Teague, now with the Atlanta Hawks, scored a game-high 34 points for the Deacs, while McFarland had 20 points and nine rebounds.

--The ‘under’ has cashed in three straight Carolina games. The ‘under’ is 7-6 overall for UNC, 4-3 in its home outings.

--The ‘over’ has hit in four of Wake’s last five games. For the season, the Deacs have watched the ‘over’ go 7-5 overall, although the ‘under’ is 4-2 in their road assignments.

--The ‘over’ is on a 5-1 run in the last six Wake-UNC meetings.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

              **Baylor at Kansas**
