Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs [ESPN | 9:00 PM ET]

Jazz: Utah enters tonight having won 4 of their past 5 games SU. The Jazz are also unbeaten ATS over their past 7 games. Utah has won 7 of their last 8 games SU when they scored 100 PTS or more. The Jazz are 23-18 SU and 23-16-2 ATS this season. Besides games against San Antonio, the Jazz really struggle on the road, as they are only 7-12 SU. Luckily the Jazz have been better on the road ATS, going 9-9-1. The Jazz average 100.8 PPG, which ranks them 12th in the NBA. Both PG Deron Williams and F Carlos Boozer average 19 PPG to lead the Jazz in scoring. Both players lead their team in other categories, as Williams averages nearly 10 APG while Boozer averages more than 10 RPG. G Kyle Korver had a season high 19 PTS in his last game including 4 3 pointers. Defensively, Utah is 10th in the league allowing only 97.3 PPG. Prior to their previous game against Denver, the Jazz had held 7 straight opponents under 100 PTS.

Jazz are 10-3 ATS last 13 games following a SU loss.
Over is 5-0 last 5 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

Key Injuries - C Kyrylo Fesenko (ankle) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 95 (Side of the Day)

Spurs (-6.5, O/U 194): San Antonio is clearly looking forward to this game tonight, as they have already lost 3 times SU to Utah this season. The Spurs are 25-15 SU and 21-18-1 ATS this season. The Spurs are 17-6 SU and 13-9-1 ATS at home this year. San Antonio is currently in 4th place in the Western Conference, thanks to a 16-6 SU run since December 9th. Their commitment to defense is a big reason why this Spurs team has turned their season around. They've held 5 of their past 6 opponents to 92 PTS or fewer, with the only exception being an overtime game. Over their past 22 games, the Spurs have held their opponents under 100 PTS 18 times. C Tim Duncan is having one of his finest seasons ever, as he's averaging 20 PPG and 10 RPG, both team highs. PG Tony Parker is 2nd on the team with nearly 17 PPG, and a team high 5.6 APG. The Spurs average 101 PPG, the 10th most in the NBA.

Spurs are 2-7 ATS last 9 vs. NBA Northwest.
Over is 5-0 last 5 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

Key Injuries - F Richard Jefferson (back) is questionable.
G Michael Finley (ankle) is out.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 96

Wake Forest at North Carolina [ESPN | 7:00 PM ET]

Wake Forest: Wake Forest has lost 2 of their last 3 games SU, with both coming on the road. Both road losses came against league opponents, Duke and Miami. All 3 of the Deamon Deacons wins SU since New Years Eve have come in overtime. For the entire season, Wake Forest is 12-4 SU and 6-7 ATS. The Deamon Deacons are 4-3 both SU and ATS on the road this season. Wake Forest is 2-2 both SU and ATS as the listed underdog this year, and have won both games ATS as a single digit favorite. F Al-Farouq Aminu leads Wake Forest in scoring and rebounding, as he averages nearly 18 PPG and more than 11 RPG. Besies Aminu, the Deamon Deacons have really struggled with their shooting percentage, as they've been held under 40% in 2 of their past 3 contests. G Ishmael Smith has played 173 of a possible 180 minutes over his past 4 games. The Deamon Deacons have held their opposition to 67 PPG this season.

Over is 6-1 last 7 games following a SU loss.

Key Injuries - G Konner Tucker (personal) is out.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 80

North Carolina (-6, O/U 157): North Carolina is in rare form currently, as they had lost back to back games SU. They are looking to avoid losing 3 consecutive games for the 1st time under Coach Williams tenure. The Tarheels will be playing on revenge tonight, as they lost to Wake Forest last year. The Tarheels need to avoid costly turnovers, as they averaged more than 20 turnovers in their last 2 losses. North Carolina averages nearly 83 PPG this season, and have only been held under 70 PTS in 2 of their 18 games. In both instances that they were held under 70 PTS, they lost the game SU. Forwards Ed Davis and Deon Thompson are the heart and soul of this team. They also are the only Tarheels averaging double digits as each average nearly 15 PPG. North Carolina is 11-1 SU and 4-6 ATS at home this season. The Tarheels are 3-2 ATS as a single digit favorite this year.

North Carolina is 21-8 ATS last 29 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
Over is 4-0 last 4 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

                  Wednesday six-pack

-- Jim Calhoun goes on medical leave; apparently, UConn's play was making him sick. 11-6 Huskies have St John's/Texas this week.

-- Bills hired Chan Gailey as head coach; hard to imagine thats going to sell a lot of tickets in western New York this winter.

-- Jonathan Papelbon gets a 1-year, $9.35M contract from Red Sox; that is going to fuel speculation that they might let him walk after 2010.

-- Erratic Missouri State blew 20-point halftime lead, then beat Indiana State 99-92 in OT. Bears seem to play one terrible half every game.

-- Tennessee still hasn't lost in 2010; they won 63-56 at Alabama in its first road game this month.

-- Miami blew 10-point halftime lead, lost at home to Boston College, as Eagles surprisingly swept them this season.

Wednesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

                  13) First of all, a big thanks to the staff at St Peter's Hospital for being so nice to my godson, who had an emergency appendectomy Tuesday night. Was a pretty rough day/night, but looks like the young man will be fine.

                  12) 53 non-seniors apllied for the 2010 NFL Draft, tying the record from two years ago; 46 players came out early LY. It was expected that more might come out this year, because of impending labor problems, but that didn't happen. Six All-Americans are coming out early.

                  11) When Syracuse star Wesley Johnson came out of high school, only one Division I school offered him a basketball scholarship: Louisiana-Monroe.

                  10) Mike Nolan wasn't out of work long; after Denver surprisingly let him go Monday, defensive guru Nolan signed on with the Dolphins Tuesday. Too bad Miami and Denver don't play next season.

                  9) Broncos will have their fifth defensive coordinator in five years in '10.

                  8) There are people who know Mark McGwire who say the big slugger is good enough to get his PGA Tour card, if he really worked at it.

                  7) Was reading on espn.com how John Daly is using 20-year Ping wedges to get around new USGA rules regarding conforming grooves. Old wedges have been grandfathered in by the USGA.

                  6) Was surprised to see that Robert Allenby hasn't won golf tournament in this country since September 2001; he's won 18 international tournaments and from 2005-09, still earned $9,220,865 in this country, but you'd think that somewhere along the line, he would have won one here.

                  5) Benjie Molina signed with the Giants, further proof the Mets are asleep at the wheel. Speaking of which, read how the Red Sox were reluctant to give Jason Bay a big contract because they think he has an arthritic knee, much like Carlos Beltran. Uh oh.

                  4) With only a month until spring training, jobs are starting to fill; Angels are now involved with Joel Pineiro. They better do something, since Seattle has had a good enough winter to make them the '10 AL West frontrunner.

                  3) Jay Bilas was saying on ESPN the other night how 80% of all players in the NBA are role players; its become a league of stars and specialists.

                  2) Its terrific how generous people are being to Haiti, but who decides how all this money is going to be spent? It must be a huge project, rebuilding a country while caring for so many people. Just hope that all the money gets to where it was meant to go.

                  1) After my godson's surgery Tuesday night, the surgeon comes down and he tells you how it went; it must be amazing to be able to put people back together and make them well again. The look on a surgeon's face when you thank him is something special. Quite a skill these people have.

                    Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for January 20, 2010 from Len Berman.

                    1. Quick Hits

The Buffalo Bills have a new coach. Former Dallas Cowboys coach Chan Gailey.
U-Conn basketball coach Jim Calhoun, a cancer survivor, is taking a medical leave of absence.
Cleveland's Shaquille O'Neal becomes the 5th NBA player to reach 28,000 points. Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain the others. Shaq said if he didn't miss so many free throws he'd be at 30,000 by now.
Closer Jonathan Papelbon and the Red Sox avoid arbitration. One year, $9.35 million. That's a record for a reliever with 4 years or less of service.
Catcher Bengie Molina reups with the SF Giants instead of signing with the Mets.
Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, the back to back NL Cy Young winner, is asking for a record $13-million in arbitration. The Giants are offering $8-million.
The Mets have named Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Manager Davey Johnson and General Manager Frank Cashen to their Hall of Fame. All are most worthy.

                    2. The News Cycle

Having worked in the news business, I've seen how it works. A big story breaks. It gets covered, and then the media moves on. Haiti doesn't and shouldn't work that way.
Word comes that at least 30 members of Haiti's soccer federation, players, refs, coaches and other officials, perished in the earthquake. The federation's headquarters collapsed.
Meanwhile, the coach of the South Dakota State basketball team, Scott Nagy, will coach shoe-less this weekend. His adopted daughter is from Haiti and he wants to raise awareness and money. He also wants to collect shoes for Haitian kids in need.
Good for coach Nagy, and for everyone else who refuses to let this news cycle die.

                    3. Small D

Wow. I didn't know there were so many Dallas Cowboy haters out there. When I suggested Dallas might have been right in their criticism of Minnesota for running up the score against the Vikings, they came flying out of the woodwork.
*Bill.R. writes, "Why is it classless to score points you can get? If they didn't want them to score again, maybe they just should have ended the game early."
*From Jim S. "I think the classless thing would have been for Minnesota to kick a FG from there…..or if they had thrown a bomb from 70 yards downfield ….but not this."
*And from Don A."You mean the Cowboys of the leg-whipping and tripping Flozell Adams et al. are complaining about another team? They were beaten like a junkyard dog. They should have the class to shut up and go home."
Silly me. I thought the Cowboys were America's Team.

                    4. Pet Peeves

We all have pet peeves in sports, but what can we do about them? There's always talk radio to blow off steam. I got even luckier. The current issue of American Football Monthly asked me to write a guest column. The magazine is mostly read by football coaches. Now I had my chance. Who hasn't wanted to give some football coach or other a piece of his mind? So I wrote an article about coaches who give up on what's working during a game and resort to gimmick plays that fail. I've even seen the great Bill Parcells do it.
But I can see it now. Dozens of coaches reading my little diatribe and then going back to trying to draw up the perfect triple reverse.

                    5. What's in a Name?

When I mentioned Ernie D's birthday, (former ball handling whiz Ernie DiGregorio turned 59 last week,) subscriber Richard F. wrote that the defensively challenged Ernie had one of his favorite nicknames, "Ernie No D." He said another favorite nickname was former Mets reliever Bob Apodaca. After surrendering some long homers he was dubbed "Bob Upper Decker."
                    OK, now it's your turn.

Happy Birthday: Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. 46.
Bonus Birthday: The second man to set foot on the moon in 1969, astronaut Buzz Aldrin. 80.

Today in Sports: The birth of happiness and then years and years and years of agony. The Boston Red Stockings come into existence. 1871.
Bonus Event: Remember way back when? When everyone seemed happy for one day? Barack Obama is sworn in as President of the United States. 2009.
