    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, January 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Capitals play host to the Red Wings, Clemson takes on Georgia Tech, and the Raptors look for a victory in Cleveland.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up just two games on Tuesday night, with Indiana at Miami and Toronto at Cleveland. The Raptors pushed their season record over the .500 mark (21-20 SU, 20-21 ATS) with a 110-88 win over the Mavericks on Sunday afternoon. Chris Bosh scored 23 points and added 13 rebounds for Toronto in that victory, while Andrea Bargnani picked up 22 points. The Cavaliers (31-11 SU, 20-21-1 ATS) edged the Clippers 102-101 in Los Angeles in their last game on Saturday. LeBron James led the way with 32 points for Cleveland in that win.

As well, in notable college hoops matchups on Tuesday it's Tennessee at Alabama, Purdue at Illinois, Boston College at Miami, and Clemson at Georgia Tech. The Tigers (15-3 SU, 9-6 ATS) are coming off a 73-70 win over North Carolina State in their last game on Saturday, with Trevor Booker pouring in 20 points for Clemson in that contest. The Yellow Jackets (13-4 SU, 8-4 ATS) upset North Carolina 73-71 on Saturday, with Iman Shumpert tossing in a team-high 30 points in the win. Gani Lawal added 12 points and 12 rebounds for Georgia Tech.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are eight games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with Tampa Bay at the Rangers, Columbus at Philadelphia, Toronto at Atlanta, Chicago at Ottawa, the Islanders at Pittsburgh, Buffalo at Anaheim, San Jose at Los Angeles, and Detroit at Washington. The 24-16-8 Red Wings will be looking to bounce back from a 4-3 shootout loss to the Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon, with Nicklas Lidstrom picking up a goal and an assist in that defeat. The 30-12-6 Capitals have won three straight contests, getting past the Flyers 5-3 on Sunday.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Tuesday, January 19

      Lines off the board today

      Islanders at Penguins

Lines to keep an eye on

The Blues at Blue Jackets line launched at Columbus -130 and has fallen as low as -114 on one book, -120 on several others.

      Weather to watch

Heavy rains forced delays in Monday's opening round of the Australian Open and more today could throw the tournament even farther off schedule.

      Who's hot

Indiana Pacers are 4-1 SU and ATS in their last five.

New York Islanders are 5-1 SU and ATS in their last six.

      Whos' not

Cleveland Cavaliers are 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine.

New York Rangers are 4-16-1 against the over in last 21.

      Key stat

Tennessee is only 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games against Alabama.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis broke his left hand on the Chargers' first play Sunday and missed much of the first half while getting X-rays and a wrap job that resembled a roll of paper towels. Despite his ability to get to the play in the second half, he was unable to make it when he got there, once letting QB Phillip Rivers slip his grip on a would-be sack. That's bad news against Peyton Manning's lightning-fast release. He may be replaced by a slower Mike DeVito. The Jets are 7.5 underdogs with a total of 40.

      Biggest game on the slate

Sharks at Kings features a showdown of Western Conference title contenders. San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov has been ungiving recently, stopping 95 of 98 shots and allowing only one goal per game over the last three entering Monday's late game against Calgary. The Kings have been winning with determination, going 5-2 SU and ATS in their last seven, and have had a rare a three-day break.

      Notable quotable

''This is my fourth time doing it, so I know people probably get sick of seeing me dunk, but like I said, the champion's got to go back. ... It's in the rulebook. You win, you go back every year."

-- New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson on his decision to defend his title in the Feb. 13 NBA slam dunk contest.

      Tips and notes

-- Indiana Pacers guard Luther Head is questionable with an ankle injury against Miami, his former team, leaving Brandon Rush in his place to try to beat the Heat's tough back court. Rush tallied 15 points, six rebounds and five assists Friday in relief of Head, but has been otherwise invisable for Indy. The Pacers need a healthy Head-Rush combo to hang with Dwyane Wade and Rafer Alston. Miami is favored by 5.5 with a total of 205.5.

-- Tennessee has held its own despite being short-handed after four players were suspended for their Jan. 1 joyride with weed and a weapon. Two of those players are back for the first time for Tuesday's night's SEC tilt at Alabama - guards Melvin Goins and Cameron Tatum. Although their numbers, a combined 14.8 points per game, aren't enough to make a huge difference, their presence may give the Vols a mental boost and help avoid physical fatigue. They are 2-point favorites over the Tide.

-- Indiana State guard Dwayne Lathan is doubtful with a leg injury in Tuesday night's game at Missouri State. The Sycamores' top scorer was averaging 13.1 points per game and had seven straight games in double digits before suffering the injury Saturday. The Sycamores looked lost on offense in his absence, getting blown out 62-40 to Northern Iowa. The Bears are 8.5-point favorites with a total of 132.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Cowboy-Viking game got 23.9 TV rating Sunday; Jet-Charger game, even though it was on the later timeslot, got a 23.1 rating.

-- PGA Tour event in San Diego next week didn't have a sponsor until Farmers' Insurance Company stepped in at the last minute. Tour would have picked up tab for $5.3M prize money had no sponsor been found.

-- Monta Ellis hoisted up 39 shots in Golden State's win over Chicago Monday; he was 14-39 from floor, but he did have eight assists. Must be fun playing for a coach who doesn't know what a red light is.

-- Charlotte Bobcats have now won nine of their last eleven games.

-- Denver fired defensive coordinator Nolan, whose defense allowed eight points a game less than LY's Broncos did. Very strange move.

-- Wade Phillips will be back as coach of the Cowboys next year; if I was a Dallas fan, not sure if that news would make me happy or not.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a variety of subjects...

        13) Someone has to explain to me why high school teams from Las Vegas and Santa Ana, CA were playing in Springfield, MA Monday afternoon. Who pays for it? When do these kids study? When are they kids?

        12) Games were televised on ESPNU and they were very high-level games; I'm flipping between them and an America East college game, and the high school game was more fun to watch. Just seems strange for a Monday.

        11) #1 Texas was down 10 at the half at Kansas State Monday, caught up, then lost 71-62 to a good Wildcat team in Manhattan. K-State plays fast but not always smart-- listening to Bob Knight was funny at times-- the game today isn't the same game he was great at coaching.

We follow 22 college basketball conferences very closely, but nine other leagues get automatic bids to NCAA tournament; here is some knowledge on those nine conferences as we're already halfway through January.....
        10) America East-- Ranked 26th out of 31 leagues. Vermont (13-5, 4-0) is only team (#124) in league ranked higher than 187th out of 344 in D-I.

        9) Atlantic Sun-- Wide-open league; 6-1 Campbell leads league, 5th-place Jacksonville is 5-3. 9-9 East Tennessee State (!21st) is highest-ranked club in the league, which has added lot of schools new to Division I. This is the 21st-ranked league, highest of the non-rotation leagues.

        8) Big South-- Ranked 28th. Coastal Carolina (17-3, 7-1) leads league; they are coached by former Clemson/Auburn coach Cliff Ellis. No one in league is ranked higher than the Chanticleers' (#154)

        7) MEAC-- Todd Bozeman coached Jason Kidd at Cal; now his Morgan State Bears (11-7, 4-0, #135) are dominating this weak league; none of the other MEAC teams are ranked higher than 242nd. 29th-rated league.

        6) NEC-- 30th-ranked league has 3-way tie at top (Quinnipiac, LIU and Robert Morris); at bottom, Wagner/Bryant are combined 2-35. Look out for KL Wheat's alma mater, St Francis (NY), off to a 4-2 start in league.

        5) Patriot-- Lafayette/Lehigh look like best teams in this league, which has slipped badly the last couple years. Army (#212) is highest-rated team in Pomeroy rankings, but they lost two of first three league games.

        4) Southland-- 12-4 Texas-San Antonio (#117) is league's highest-ranked team, but with 12 teams in this conference, still too early to tell whether Roadrunners or Sam Houston State (10-5) or SE Louisiana (10-5) is best.

        3) Summit-- 25th-ranked league, but the better teams, Oakland, IUPUI and Oral Roberts are better than that. North Dakota State gave Kansas a run in NCAAs last March, but they had lot of seniors, are just 6-10 this year.

        2) SWAC-- Horrendous league, worst of the automatic qualifiers. Overall non-conference record is a staggering 22-89. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is #221 team, highest-rated in league, but they're freakin' 3-12, because their first fourteen games were all on the road. This league is a play-in game regular.

        1) 11 of the 15 Western Conference teams in NBA are 21-19 or better; in Eastern Conference, seven teams are at least seven games under .500. Lot of credit to Memphis (22-18), Charlotte (20-19); vastly improved teams.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Cleveland Cavaliers (-9.5, 203)

Whether you’re getting paid in American or Canadian funds, the Toronto Raptors are single-handedly pulling bettors out of the recession.

Toronto has gone 10-3 since Dec. 18, covering in nine of those 13 contests. The Raptors’ most recent win was a 110-88 beating of the Dallas Mavericks as 1-point home underdogs Sunday night.

"To get to where we want to go we're going to have to win big games and today was a big game," forward Chris Bosh told reporters. "We came out prepared and I'm really proud of my guys for the way they played."

Toronto’s offense has been firing on all cylinders during this winning stretch. The Raptors are averaging more than 104 points per game in 2010 and rank fifth in the NBA in scoring.

Toronto won its lone meeting with Cleveland this season, taking a 101-91 win over the Cavaliers as 7-point home underdogs in late October.

              Pick: Toronto

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-5.5, 205)

If you lived in South Beach, you wouldn't want to leave either. The Miami Heat are back in the Sunshine State after a six-game western road trip that saw the team go 3-3 SU and ATS.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was disappointed after his team’s 98-80 loss to Oklahoma City Saturday. He talked to his team about getting big wins that can set the tone for the second half of the season.

"We'll have another opportunity for a defining moment and we'll be ready for that,'' Spoelstra told the Sun Sentinel. "I liked some of the things we did in the two games against Golden State and Houston in terms of our defensive effort and the ball movement.

"We'll continue to work on that and take it another step forward as we go home and head back on the road.''

While beating the Pacers at home isn’t considered a “defining moment”, it is a step in the right direction before Miami hits the road again for two more games this week.

              Pick: Miami

                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Clemson at Georgia Tech
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clemson Tigers at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (-2, 142)

The feature game on Tuesday’s College Hoops card tips off at Alexander Memorial Coliseum when Georgia Tech (13-4, 2-2) hosts Clemson (15-3, 3-1) in a key ACC clash.

It marks the first meeting between these two squads this season. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Tigers, 86-81, in the donkey round of the ACC Tournament in their most recent meeting last year.

What have you done for me lately?

The visiting Tigers enter off a 73-70 win at NC State as 4.5-point favorites this past Saturday.

Clemson is 9-1 SU and 5-2 ATS against .666 or less opposition and 6-2 SU and 4-4 ATS versus greater than .666 opponents this season.

The Ramblin’ Wreck checks in off a 73-71 upset win at North Carolina Saturday, upending the Tar Heels as 7.5-point underdogs. The victory snapped a 12-game losing skid at Chapel Hill and was Tech’s first ACC road win in two years.

The Yellow Jackets are 10-1 SU and 5-1 ATS when facing .666-competition or less opponents and 3-3 SU and ATS when squaring off against greater than .666-opposition this campaign.

                      A sign of the times

Clemson’s victory over the Wolfpack snapped an annoying streak for the Tigers, who were coming off a 19-point win over 12th-ranked North Carolina. They had lost their next game 14 consecutive times after posting a win over a ranked team - a stretch dating back to the 1997-98 season.

As a result, they have back-to-back wins over North Carolina teams (UNC and Duke) for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

After going up by as much as 21 points against North Carolina State, the Tigers were hanging on at the end before finally eking out a victory.

"We were tough in the first half, and we were tough at the end," coach Oliver Purnell said after his Tigers held on for the win. "That happens sometimes when you're on the road."

                      Role call

Clemson F Trevor Brooker leads the Tiger in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). Guard Demontez Stitt hurt his ankle in the second half and played only 23 minutes at N.C. State, settling for nine points before leaving with more than 13 minutes left in the second half.

His status is day-to-day. Stitt is the team’s second-leading scorer (11.3 ppg) and top assist man (3.7 apg).

Georgia Tech F Gani Lawai tops the team in scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounds (9.2 rpg). Derrick Favors averages 11.5 ppg, while hauling down 8.6 rpg.

After missing six games following arthroscopic knee surgery, Tech PG Iman Shumpert struggled in his first few games back. He now looks fully recovered. The sophomore scored a career-high 30 at UNC.

"We are dealing with young guys. We have four freshmen and two sophomores in the top-six rotation,” Yellow Jackets head coach Paul Hewitt told reporters.

                      In memory of

Clemson will play in honor of the late Gaines Adams, the former Tiger and Chicago Bears defensive lineman who passed away this weekend from an enlarged heart.

Adams was a former first-round NFL pick (and 4th overall) by the Tampa Bay Bucs in the 2007 draft.

                      Did you know

ACC teams that upset North Carolina are 22-37 SU and 22-33 ATS in their next game, including 7-16 ATS at home.

Clemson is 4-12 SU and 5-11 ATS in its last 16 visits to Georgia Tech, including 0-5 SU and ATS when the Yellow Jackets are playing off a SU and ATS win.

Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals (-180, 6)

The Red Wings gave us a thrilling performance when they faced the Chicago Blackhawks on only 24-hours rest Sunday afternoon. Despite two amazing shootout goals by Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi, Detroit was unable to come out on top and suffered a 4-3 loss.

“It was a fun game and it looked like the crowd was really into it, too, with scoring chances going back and forth and some great goals being scored, and then a shoot-out as well,” Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom told The Detroit Free Press.

The Red Wings have been battling injuries all season and are still without Tomas Holmstrom, Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall. But they proved Sunday that they can still keep up with the best team in the league.

“I still think we're a team to beat,” Todd Bertuzzi told The Detroit News. “I think Chicago is a very good team, but we match up well against them.”

The Red Wings will face another tough opponent Tuesday when they visit the Washington Capitals. The Caps sit in first place in the East and have been lighting it up lately going over the total nine times in their last 10 outings.

                            Pick: Over

New York Islanders at Pittsburgh Penguins (N/A)

The Pittsburgh Penguins ended a five-game road trip on a sour note when they were destroyed 6-1 by the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night. The team must nevertheless be relieved to come home with a 3-2-0 record especially after winning only two of nine prior to that stretch.

“We were more determined to play our game ... and that means managing the puck and executing the way we need to,” head coach Dan Bylsma told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “We understand we still have a ways to go, but we made some strides to that on this trip.”

But with No. 1 goalie Marc-André Fleury and backup Brent Johnson both questionable for Tuesday’s tilt, the Penguins may have an even harder time finding ways to win. John Curry got the nod Saturday against Vancouver but was pulled after letting in five goals on 14 shots forcing 19-year-old Russian rookie Alex Pechurski to make his NHL debut.

Pechurski, who doesn’t speak a word of English and moved to the States only a couple of weeks ago, came out wearing Fleury’s pads Saturday.

This doesn’t bode well for the Penguins.

                            Pick: Islanders
