I agree it isnt the best solution. However the game was boring before ending right after the first OT and having it end in a tie. Tie's are for pansies (and the Eagles)

I agree ... I think it is really a dumb way to end a game ...

I also agree with this .. I hated the ties ... But why a shoot-out?? Just keep playing in OT until someone scores ...

This rule came out when the NHL was trying it's best to change the game and make it more exciting. Whether we as sports bettors love the game the way it is or not doesnt change the fact that the average joe-blow fan probably likes the shootout because it ends the game quickly and seems exciting to them. Personally I liked hockey better before they changed the game. I liked the defense and lower scoring. Goalies throwing the puck back into the neutral zone. More hitting and less pond hockey.

I would prefer an endless 4-on4 OT as well. Could you imagine all the awesome open ice action for 20 minutes for that extra point?
