    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, January 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Wild play host to the Penguins, Villanova meets Louisville, and the Celtics look for a home win over the Hawks.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has nine games on tap for Monday, with Toronto at Indiana, New Orleans at Philadelphia, Detroit at Chicago, New York at Oklahoma City, Minnesota at Denver, Milwaukee at Phoenix, Miami at Utah, Cleveland at Golden State, and Atlanta at Boston. The Hawks and Celtics also met on Friday night, with Atlanta pulling out a 93-85 home victory. Jamal Crawford had 18 points off the bench for the Hawks in that win, while Josh Smith had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Paul Pierce tossed in a game-high 21 points in the loss for the Celtics.

As well, the only ranked team in action on the college basketball schedule for Monday is Villanova, which will play on the road against Louisville. The Wildcats picked up a slim 78-76 win over Marquette in their last game on Saturday, with Corey Stokes scoring a team-high 16 points for Villanova in that contest. The Cardinals beat St. John's 75-68 on Saturday, as Jerry Smith poured in 16 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the National Hockey League has four games on tap for Monday, with Colorado at Calgary, San Jose at Los Angeles, Nashville at Vancouver, and Pittsburgh at Minnesota. The Penguins had no trouble grabbing a road win in Toronto on Saturday night, as Sergei Gonchar scored twice in the 4-1 decision. Sidney Crosby potted his 27th goal of the year in the contest. The Wild, meanwhile, mounted a big rally against the Blackhawks on Saturday, storming back from a 5-1 deficit with four third-period goals, then winning in the shootout.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Monday, January 11

      Very good byes

While the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints spent the weekend on the couch, wild-card teams like the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens became all the rage among NFL fans.

Almost forgotten are the top seeds’ quest for perfect seasons. The Jets and Ravens satisfy the age-old question ''What have you done for me lately?’’

The general public has short-attention spans and falls in love with the teams that have impressed them most recently. That trend bore out last week as the Green Bay Packers, who blistered the Arizona Cardinals in Week 17, flip-flopped from 2.5-point dogs to 2.5-point favorites in the playoffs. The people’s choice, indeed.

Or maybe it’s because of last season’s surge of the wild card. Three out of four wild-card teams went on to win in the divisional round for the first time in NFL history.

But look at the long-haul track record and you’ll see that a first-round bye and home-field advantage are still overwhelming advantages.

Before last year, the top two seeds in each conference were 57-17 SU against their wild-card visitors dating back to 1990, when the NFL went to the current 12-team playoff format.

So if you like the rested home teams this weekend you may want to wait until closer to kickoff to lay your money down. The lines general move in favor of the ''hot’’ teams, even though the ''cold’’ ones didn’t play.

      Not-so Melo

Carmelo Anthony hasn’t played in the last five games for the Denver Nuggets but the team has held its own behind the hot hand of Chauncey Billups, going 2-2-1 ATS in that span.

Anthony (knee) and guard Ty Lawson (ankle) are listed as questionable but are leaning toward returning for Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have lost six of their last seven SU and allowed at least 106 points during that span.

Add a somewhat healthy Anthony to the increased scoring of Billups and the Nuggets should be able to score at will against the defenseless T’wolves.

      Later, Sooners

The second biggest game in the state of Oklahoma tips off tonight, you know, besides the Oklahoma State-Oklahoma football game.

The basketball version has gotten just as big in recent years with both programs staking a claim on the college basketball map. However, they now appear to be programs heading in opposite directions.

The Cowboys have won seven of their last eight SU, winning and covering all but a close road loss at Rhode Island. They have been led by guard James Anderson, who has scored at least 25 points per game in five of the last six outings.

The Sooners have started to slump after big wins over Arizona, Utah and North Carolina. They have lost three out of their last four, getting blown out by Gonzaga, UTEP and Baylor.

The Cowboys are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 against Big 12 competition, including a one-point win here last year. Oklahoma State is -1 with a total of 147.

      Notable quotable

''Whew, anyone else tired? Man, what a football game!’’

-- Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner in the postgame press conference following the Cardinals’ 51-45 overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers. The 96 total points were the most ever scored in a playoff game. Warner is rumored to be retiring at the end of the season.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- Arizona 51, Green Bay 45 is highest scoring playoff game in history of the NFL; how weird is it that a defensive TD ended the game?

-- All five games on NFC side of the bracket will be played in domes.

-- NFL pre-game shows are just horrendous. Too many ex-players, not enough ex-coaches. Wonder if the powers-that-be think they're good?

-- First PGA Tour event of the year went to Geoff Ogilvy, who held off Rory Sabbatini to win at Hawai'i. Sabbatini shot a 63 Sunday.

-- BYU point guard Jimmer Fredette has strep/mono; he sat out BYU's win at UTEP, not sure if he'll play in next game against Air Force.

-- Hell of a week for Bruce Pearl, as Tennessee beat Charlotte by 17 and upset #1 Kansas, despite suspending four players for getting arrested on drug/weapon charges. Emotional win for the Volunteers Sunday.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday.......

        13) The NFL has a rule that you have to interview a minority candidate for any head coaching opening, but the rule lacks common sense-- it should be for coordinators, since that is the pool of candidates most coaching jobs are filled from. Most of the Rooney Rule interviews now are simply shams.

        12) Say you own the Seahawks; the only way you're firing the coach you have now is if you can get Pete Carroll, but the process gets delayed by the rule that says a minority has to be interviewed, even though he clearly has no chance of getting the job. The people at USC are getting hosed by this, since it delays the process of replacing Carroll and keeping their recruits in the fold. They lose too many recruits, the job becomes less attractive.

        11) Only three names I've heard mentioned for USC are Mike Riley, the Oregon State coach (former USC aide, also coached the Chargers), Herman Edwards (why in God's name would they hire him?) and Jack del Rio, who is a Trojan alumnus. Riley is from Corvallis, not sure he would leave there again, after he bolted the Beavers once to go to the NFL.

        10) Packers got bet heavily, were anywhere from 1-3 point favorite by the time their game kicked off Sunday. Good win for the sportsbooks.

        10) Kurt Warner was 29-33/379 yards and five TDs Sunday, but rumors persist that if Green Bay had beaten the Cardinals, this would have been the last game for Warner, who obviously is still really good. All I know is this: I'm going to be spending a summer weekend in Canton, OH sometime in the future, just not sure which year yet. What a career Warner has had.

        9) Larry Fitzgerald has caught nine TD passes in five playoff games.

        8) How could the Cardinals not think an onside kick was at least possible when they were up 31-17?

        7) Warner threw five TD passes, four incompletions; Joe Flacco had four completions all day in Baltimore's win earlier at Foxboro.

        6) More Patriot chicanery? Baltimore coaches said they never saw a replay of a muffed punt that handed New England its first TD; I'm just asking, but had Raven coaches seen a replay, they would have challened the call and gotten the ball back for their team. In the end, it didn't matter.

        5) TV ratings for Saturday's NFL games were highest for this round since 1999, which is sure to be a topic at the league's labor negotiations.

        4) Had to be a good weekend to be Rick Neuheisel, UCLA's football coach, as USC appears headed for a downturn with Carroll going to Seattle and USC recruits getting uneasy about their commitments to Troy.

        3) 38,472 hearty souls packed into Fenway Park Friday night for college hockey doubleheader; there was a women's game and BU-BC men's game. Outdoor hockey games have proven to be financial bonanzas.

        2) Cincinnati Reds are rumored to have given Cuban lefty Chapman $30M which might be more surprising than Carroll going to the Seahawks. Since when do the Reds throw around big money, especially for an unknown?

        1) Early lines for next week's NFL playoff games are: Saints -7.5 (56.5), Colts -7 (47.5), Vikings -2.5 (47), Chargers -9 (42.5).

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Philadelphia 76ers (-3.5, 198)

So which is more disgusting: the Sixers’ season record or Allen Iverson’s All-Star vote count?

The Answer’s second tour in Philly has been a modest one (14.6 ppg, 4.4 apg) but coach Eddie Jordan can’t say enough good things about Iverson and league fans can’t stop voting for him to start for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star Game.

If the All-Star Game happened today, the East would send out Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett and Iverson. To borrow a line from Sesame Street – one of these things is not like the others.

Iverson says his sore knee might keep him from playing in the mid-season classic. He’s missed Saturday’s game at Detroit and Philly isn’t sure when he’ll be ready to return.

The real All-Star at work in this contest will be Chris Paul. The point guard has been the driving force behind the Hornets five-game win streak (4-1 against the spread).

              Pick: Hornets

Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls (N/A)

If you’re hungry for trends, Monday night’s Detroit-Chicago matchup features a big ol' trend sandwich.

The Pistons have lost 12 in a row SU and are 1-11 ATS in that span, blowing the spread by double figures in five of the last seven. The Bulls have won five of their last eight SU, not exactly a hot streak, but they are 7-1 ATS during that stretch.

The Bulls have won five straight over the Pistons and are 8-2 SU in the last 10 meetings, with Chicago going 9-0-1 ATS in that run. Detroit hasn’t won in Chicago since 2006.

With numbers like that, the line is sure to be tilted in Chicago’s favor, but how much? Remember that Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon and Rodney Stuckey are expected back for the Pistons in this one.

Gordon, who scored the NBA’s 10 millionth point Saturday night, might have to score 10 million all by himself to make up for a team that hasn’t broken 100 points in a month.

''It’s like we don’t have any rhythm,’’ Gordon told NBA.com. ''Guys are not getting shots where they are supposed to get them.’’

The line and total are currently off the board awaiting injury updates, but there may not be a number big enough to fire on the Pistons.

              Pick: Chicago

Game of the Day: Villanova Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Villanova Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals (-2, 156)

A pair of Big East unbeatens clash in Monday night's feature game when Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals host No. 6 Villanova Wildcats.

The 14-1 Wildcats are riding a five-game winning streak and are coming off a narrow 78-76 win over Marquette. The Cardinals escaped an upset against St. John's on Saturday. Down 32-28 at the half, Louisville used a late 12-1 run in the second half to come away with the 75-68 victory.

                      Fast Cats

Villanova ranks 10th in the nation in points scored at 84.3 ppg and it’s no secret the Cats will go at Louisville with an up-tempo attack.

The Cardinals faced a similar high-paced offense against Providence, where they won 92-70, but Nova's talent is on a different level. Senior guard Scottie Reynolds leads the attack averaging 17.7 points per game and he's aided by a strong supporting cast of guards that all played a key role in last year's Final Four appearance.

It starts with 2009 Big East Sixth Man of the Year Corey Fisher and the other Corey, Corey Stokes, who hit four key three pointers against Marquette.

"They are very difficult to play against, I think they have nine guards.'' Pitino joked.

The X-Factor for Nova is Reggie Redding who was suspended earlier this year for a drug related incident. Redding was reinstated after Nova's setback to Temple. The senior guard has been a force on the boards and plays an important role on the defensive end. Antonio Pena, the lone forward that starts on the team, has been decent averaging 12 ppg and 8.1 rpg.

Louisville should be prepared for a focused team Monday night. The Wildcats blew a 20-point lead and nearly lost to Marquette in their last game.

                      Balanced Birds

The Cardinals are led by sophomore forward Samardo Samuels and senior guard Edgar Sosa, but they will bring their own balanced attack against Villanova. Several times this season role players have stepped up when opposing defenses double teamed Samuels and Sosa.

St. John's held the two stars under double digits, but Jared Swopshire, Jerry Smith, and Preston Knowles came up big scoring 15, 16, and 12 respectively. Louisville's rotation goes 11 deep, which should help them when the team begins a tough five game in-conference stretch.
“That's the way it's going to be,” Sosa said. “This team is not like last year where you had Earl (Clark) or T-Will (Terrence Williams) leading us in scoring every night.”

                      Trends

Out of all the Top 25 teams, Villanova has been one of the best cover teams going 10-4 ATS. The Cats were on pace to cover their fifth straight game until they gave up that big lead against Marquette.

Louisville is 5-6 ATS this season. The Cards have been a great option in Big East play, going 42-13-2 ATS in their last 57 in-conference games.

Both sides have been good over bets this season going a combined 17-7 on totals, however the last four games in this series have gone under the total.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Avalanche at Calgary Flames (-165, 5.5)

When the Flames acquired Jay Bouwmeester last offseason, many predicted Calgary would send three defensemen to Olympics to play on Team Canada.

Bouwmeester and new teammate Robyn Regehr had already represented their country in the 2006 Olympics and Dion Phaneuf seemed like a lock to make the 2010 team back in August.

So when Steve Yzerman, Team Canada’s executive director, didn’t call any of the trio’s names at the selection press conference on Dec. 30, many people were shocked.

Not surprisingly, Calgary’s blueliners have been playing fantastic over the past two weeks. The Flames are killing penalties at a 91 percent clip and are 6-2 since Dec. 28.

                            Pick: Under

Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks (-175, 5.5)

The Canucks used to be known for little offense and a lot of defense but that hasn’t been the case lately. Vancouver is 7-1-1 and has outscored its opponents 36-15 since Dec. 22.

The offensive outburst has surprised many Vancouver backers because head coach Alian Vigneault has long been considered a defensive-minded bench boss.

“He's coaching the same way,” No. 1 center Henrik Sedin, who has 34 points in his last 19 games, told the Vancouver Sun. “When he took over, I think we were offensively challenged and we didn't have too many guys who were able to put up points.

“He knew, and I think we all knew, that we needed to win 2-1 and 1-0. That's how he built the team and the system and now we're playing exactly the same way. We just have more guys who can score.”

The Canucks are always tough to beat at GM Place (18-7) and Nashville is not sending a healthy squad to the Pacific Northwest.

                            Pick: Vancouver

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
