Pucking the trends: What's up with the Penguins?
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Penguins going south?

The Pittsburgh Penguins are the favorites to win the Stanley Cup at +550, but they are in a slump, having lost five of their last six games.

"With the [limited] amount of practice time [due to the NHL's compressed schedule in this Olympic year], some of those details have started to slip in our system and how we're playing," coach Dan Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

As Dave Molinari of the Post-Gazette points out, Pittsburgh not only has to deal with the condensed schedule, but also back-to-back short summers (as a result of making the Stanley Cup finals).

    Cheering up the Blues

Last year’s Coach of the Year nominee Andy Murray of the St. Louis Blues became the latest coaching casualty in the NHL.

How will St. Louis’ approach change under new coach Davis Payne?

"We want to attack in all areas," Payne told the St. Louis Dispatch. "We want to attack with the puck and we want to attack without the puck. We want to be a team that directs our game in a predictable manner.”

"There are X's and O's and there's systems and things like that,” forward David Backes said. “But there's a lot more on passion and trusting your teammates and playing as a group.”

St. Louis is 0-4-1 in its last five games with the over cashing each time.

    Staying the course

Coming off their most successful season in franchise history, expectations were high for the Columbus Blue Jackets this season.

Instead, they are tied for 13th place in the Western Conference, and 3-13-6 in their last 22 games.

As Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch points out, coach Ken Hitchcock isn’t planning any major changes to shakeup his team.

“We’ve got a plan and we’re willing to stick with it,” Hitchcock said. “And if it costs me my job then it costs me my job, but there is a plan."

That plan is to give considerable ice time to Columbus’ skill players.

Last year’s Calder Trophy winner Steve Mason has also been struggling for the Jackets. Mason is 11-14-6 this year with a 3.18 goals against average and .895 save percentage.

    Cats on the prowl

Despite a 2-7-1 start to the season, the Florida Panthers are within four points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

According to Harvey Fialkov of the Florida Sun-Sentinel, the play of Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun has been a major reason for the Panthers’ improvement.

"Our team play was pretty poor the first 10 games of the season and he took the brunt of that, left alone a lot of times,'' said Panthers coach Pete DeBoer. “When I look at the first 40 games he's been real good.''

Vokoun began the season 1-7-1 but has since posted an 11-5-6 record.

    On schedule

Friday, Jan. 8 – Columbus Blue Jackets at Calgary Flames

The schedule will not get easier for the scuffling Blue Jackets. They finish off a three-game, four night road trip in Calgary following a game in Vancouver on Tuesday and in Edmonton on Thursday.

Saturday, Jan. 9 – New York Islanders at Phoenix Coyotes

The Islanders must play their third road game in four nights against a Phoenix Coyotes team that is 16-6-1 at home.

Saturday, Jan. 9 – St. Louis Blues at Los Angeles Kings

The Blues will have little time to make adjustments under new coach Davis Payne. They play three games in California in four nights.

The Celtics lost earlier this season at home to Atlanta as 9 point favorites. Boston has a better record on the road than they do at home at 14-4 SU. The Celtics are 9-9 ATS on the road this year, but are 3-1 SU and ATS as the listed road underdog. All 5 starters average double digits in PTS this season, led by F Paul Pierce at nearly 19 PPG. Len’s Top Five

                          Friday, January 8

TGIF everyone, here's my Top 5 for January 8, 2010 from Len Berman at That's Sports.

                          1. Quick Hits

                          * Alabama beat Texas 37-21 to win the college football national championship.

                          * The NFL playoffs get underway tomorrow with the Jets @ Cincinnati at 4:30pm and the Eagles @ Cowboys at 8pm.

                          * Former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, serving a 2-year jail term on gun charges, has been denied work release.

                          * Eric Mangini gets to keep his job as Cleveland Browns coach.

                          * The PGA tour kicked off 2010 yesterday in Hawaii without you know who.

                          2. Collegiate $port$

Alabama football has climbed back to the mountaintop. It's been 18 years since their last national title. Their coach Nick Saban makes $4-million a year. You would expect the academic community at Alabama to be jealous. But the president of the Alabama faculty senate was quoted in the New York Times yesterday as saying, "We're one of the few universities in the country that's hiring.... a lot of that has to do with the success of the football team." She said because of football they're attracting more quality students, and as a result, faculty salaries are going up.
Normally students go wild on campus celebrating championships. At Alabama it's also the professors.

                          3. A True World Series

Is a real World Series in the offing? The commissioner of Japanese baseball says Bud Selig agrees the World Series winners of their two countries should play each other. Of course other countries will complain about being left out. But hey the BCS system has worked so well in college football........

                          4. Friday Mailbag

You had mixed feelings when I saluted Al Sharpton for urging the NBA and black leaders to end the "culture of violence being perpetuated in professional sports."
L.K. wrote: "I wouldn’t be endorsing anybody who was so wrong and arrogant about Tawana Brawley. He is a self-promoting demagogue."
S.N. counters: "The Tawana Brawley incident was an obvious misstep for Sharpton... but the man is smart, he is passionate, and there is nothing wrong with that."

B.P. thinks I messed up with my list of "Worst Sports Stories of the Year." He writes, "The biggest story of 2009 was the rape of the N.Y. sports fans by the local baseball and football teams. Who cares whether the average fan can attend games as long as the corporate spenders buy luxury boxes and tickets at outrageous prices and eat at stadium gourmet restaurants? Let the average fan be satisfied with buying team 'gear,' also at outrageous prices." He went on to chastise the media for not sticking up for the little guy.
Editor's Note: I should point out the Top 5 has been all over this issue.

R.B. has a good idea. "The undefeated BCS & Fiesta Bowl winners should play for the true Nat'l Championship...let's call it the Obama Bowl (the President favors a playoff) to be played on the weekend before the Super Bowl...forget the Pro Bowl."
Editor's Note: It would certainly be a better game.

And coming off the Gilbert Arenas suspension, subscriber T.M. has the question of the week. "With all these idiots with guns, why doesn't the U.S. dominate the shooting events at the Olympics?"
Editor's Note: Maybe because accuracy counts?

                          5. And While We're on the Subject....

Wisconsin hunters mistakenly shot 10 buildings in November. That's a vast improvement from the 25 they shot in 2008. I guess authorities figured it out when hunters were spotted driving home with dead barns tied to the roofs of their cars.

Happy Birthday: The Giambino. Former Yankee Jason Giambi. 39.
Bonus Birthday: Elvis Presley would have been 75 today!

Today in Sports: Jack Nicklaus makes his first appearance as a pro at the L.A. Open. He comes in 50th and wins $33.33. 1962.
Bonus Event: Chief Crazy Horse (one of the leaders at Custer's Last Stand) fought his last battle. 1877.
