Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The college football schedule offers up a lesser bowl game on Wednesday night, with No. 25 Central Michigan vs. Troy in the GMAC Bowl at Ladd Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The ranked Chippewas (11-2 SU, 9-3 ATS) doubled up on Ohio 20-10 in their last game to take the MAC championship. The Trojans (9-3 SU, 8-4 ATS) picked up a 48-31 win over Louisiana-Lafayette last time out; Troy was the Sun Belt champ. The oddsmakers have set Central Michigan as the 2.5-point favorite for Wednesday's game, with the total for the contest pegged at 63.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has 10 games on tap for Wednesday, including Boston at Miami. The Celtics (24-8 SU, 14-18 ATS) got past the Raptors 103-96 at home in their last game on Saturday, with Ray Allen scoring 23 points in the absence of Kevin Garnett (knee), Paul Pierce (knee), and Rajon Rondo (hamstring). The Heat (17-15 SU, 16-16 ATS) are coming off a 92-75 home win over Atlanta in their game on Monday; Dwyane Wade had a team-high 28 points for Miami in the matchup.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Wednesday: New Jersey at Atlanta, Toronto at Orlando, Washington at Cleveland, Golden State at Minnesota, New Orleans at Oklahoma City, Houston at Phoenix, Memphis at Utah, the Lakers at the Clippers, and Detroit at San Antonio. The Spurs (20-12 SU, 17-14-1 ATS) will be looking for a win after falling 91-86 in Toronto in their last game on Sunday. Tony Parker had 23 points for San Antonio in the loss, and Tim Duncan had 21 points.

Top-10 teams in action around college basketball on Wednesday include No. 7 Syracuse (vs. Memphis), No. 8 West Virginia (vs. Rutgers), No. 6 Villanova (vs. DePaul), No. 5 Duke (at Iowa State) and No. 1 Kansas (vs. Cornell). As well, the night's ranked matchup has No. 17 Wisconsin (12-2 SU, 8-4 ATS) at No. 10 Michigan State (11-3 SU, 4-9 ATS). The Badgers are coming off a 63-46 win over Penn State last game, while the Spartans knocked off Northwestern 91-70.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with Tampa Bay at Buffalo, Dallas at the Rangers, Toronto at Philadelphia, Calgary at Minnesota, the Islanders at Colorado, and St. Louis at San Jose. The 17-18-6 Blues and new head coach Davis Payne will be looking to bounce back from a 6-3 loss to the Blackhawks in their last game. The 27-9-7 Sharks were bounced 6-2 by the Kings in their Monday outing; Patrick Marleau and Doug Murray had the San Jose goals in that loss, while Evgeni Nabokov made 11 saves on 16 shots.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have won five of their last seven games thanks in large part to Mike Smith. The club’s starting goalie earned his second star of the week because of his outstanding playing, helping the Bolts earn wins over the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins last week.

He notched a 2-0-1 record with a 1.131 goals against average for the week.

“He’s really gotten into a groove,” Lightning coach Rick Tocchet told the Tampa Tribune. “He’s challenged guys and challenged himself. He didn’t like the way he was playing about a month ago and he’s worked at it.”

The Lightning have played under the total in three straight games and face one of the toughest goalies in the league (Buffalo’s Ryan Miller) on Wednesday. The total is set at 5.5 and the Sabres are a -200 favorite.

Paying for past mistakes

The Southern California Trojans play their first game Wednesday night since learning they would not be playing in either the NCAA Tournament or the NIT. The players were told about the school-issued penalty on Monday.

The punishment is a result of an investigation that found O.J. Mayo had received cash and gifts during his one season as a Trojan.

"It was the hardest thing I've had to do. Telling our team that yesterday was much harder than ever getting fired," USC coach Kevin O'Neill told reporters after practice Monday. "It's a kick in the butt for everybody, but I especially feel sorry for our seniors."

USC is a 1-point favorite at Stanford on Wednesday with a total of 125.

Everything-must-go sale

Rumors in NBA circles suggest that Utah Jazz management is willing to unload any player on its roster, other than point guard Deron Williams, in hopes of lowering the team’s payroll.

The Jazz are in the midst of a disappointing season (18-16) and all their starters earn at least $9 million.

They’ve lost three straight and host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

Poor attendance

The Tennessee Volunteers will be missing some key bodies Wednesday night against the Charlotte 49ers. The Vols suspended four of its players indefinitely because of gun possession charges.

Among the missing pieces is senior and starting forward Tyler Smith.

“We obviously don’t have the depth,” UT coach Bruce Pearl told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s going to be a challenge. It’s our hope we find a way.”

Pearl told reporters he plans to stick with a nine-man rotation, meaning he’ll be using some non-scholarship players.

The Vols play No. 1 Kansas on Sunday following Wednesday’s game against the 49ers. Tennessee is listed as an 11-point favorite over Charlotte with a total of 145.

Six-pack for Wednesday

Debasco: An event that has a permanently negative effect on the person involved. Here are six of the worst debascos of the last 25 years.......

-- Michael Vick-- Blew $130M in endorsements, at least three years of his career because he stupidly funded a dog fighting operation. Can still salvage the tail end of his career, but he should have been set for life.

-- Eldrick Woods-- All he's done is cheat on his wife (a lot) but the count on how much this is costing him goes up every day. Its beginning to look like we may not see him at all in 2010. That would hurt golf a lot.

-- Anna Nicole Smith-- I knew nothing about her until she died, but who let her put so much makeup on? She was very beautiful, should have had a tremendous life, instead she died way too young. Tragic.

-- Pete Rose-- Got screwed over by Commissioner Giamatti, who then died, which ended Rose's chances of ever getting into Cooperstown. His biggest crime is just not being very smart.

-- Eliot Spitzer-- "Mr Ethics" lasted 14 months as New York's governor, had to quit because he was too stupid to use cash to pay hookers.

-- OJ Simpson-- Johnny Cochran got him off on the murder rap, but he was deceased when OJ decided to rob guys in a Vegas hotel, where they have security cameras every six inches or so. Brilliant!!!!

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a winter day......

13) Seven coaches in 12 seasons, those are Dan Snyder's Redskins-- they gave Mike Shanahan a 5-year deal Tuesday, which may seem optimistic in light of how quickly Snyder fires coaches, but maybe this will be different.

12) Deal saves Broncos $7M over the next two seasons that they owed to Shanahan, so Pat Bowlen has to be happier than hell today, other than fact that his team is still a mess.

11) Shanahan's son Kyle will be offensive coordinator, so Houston Texans are looking for a new coordinator after their first winning season.

10) Carolina Panthers were minus-14 in turnovers the last six games, but were +20 over the last ten games, which is why their record got better.

9) Coaching is weird; guys who are disasters in one job flourish somewhere else; in 1976, George Seifert was fired as coach at Cornell in Ivy League-- 13 years later, he won his first of two Super Bowls with the 49ers.

8) Bill Callahan won an AFC title with the Raiders, but was a disaster as head coach at Nebraska; this year, his offensive line has paved the way for the Jets to lead the NFL in rushing. Like I said, coaching can be weird.

7) How did Curtis Painter make an NFL roster? He's terrible. Now you can see why the NFL wanted some team to sign Michael Vick despite all of his baggage-- if he had been ignored/blackballed by the NFL, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have gone nuts, with guys like Painter in the league.

6) Jimmy Clausen had his big toe operated on, and won't throw for teams until just before the April draft. His people are spinning this to make him sound like the toughest guy on earth and how it should help him, etc, but no way is he a top five pick now. As Brian Billick said on FOX the other night, "You miss on a 1st round QB, you wind up broadcasting for FOX", referencing his own experience with the failed Kyle Boller experience.

5) What Mike Leach did building a winning program at Texas Tech should not be overlooked; Tech is closer to Albuquerque (322 miles) than it is to Dallas (346 miles) so recruiting to Lubbock is no easy task. He'll be very tough guy to replace while maintaining their winning ways.

4) USC sacrificed this year's basketball team to try and lessen penalties on future teams; we'll see if that tactic works with the NCAA. Pac-10 tourney will only have nine teams this year, since USC won't participate.

3) Whats up with pizza guys in Michigan? Red Wings and Tigers' owner is the guy who owns Little Ceaser's, now the Domino's CEO is the new AD at University of Michigan. Maybe Papa John could run for governor.

2) The Cotton Bowl isn't played at the Cotton Bowl anymore; the Orange Bowl is in Land Shark Stadium (the old Orange Bowl is where the Marlins' new stadium is being built); pretty soon, they'll be playing the Rose Bowl at Knott’s Berry Farm. Not sure that is progress or not.

1) Iowa won a lackluster Orange Bowl 24-14 over Georgia Tech on a chilly night in Miami. The BCS has taken a lot of the energy out of these games, with the bowls so spread out, and most of them meaningless.

New Jersey Nets at Atlanta Hawks (-14, 198)

The Hawks are in uncharted waters. The team has lost four straight for the first time all season which includes a 92-75 thumping in Miami on Monday night.

The 75 points posted by Atlanta was a season-low and spawned from a 35 percent field goal shooting mark and getting outrebounded 52-30.

"We just didn't come out ready to play," said coach Mike Woodson after the game. "I have to take responsibility for that. It's unacceptable how we played."

Fortunately for the Hawks, it doesn’t appear their losing streak will be extended. Atlanta hosts the hapless New Jersey Nets Wednesday who remain the armpit of the league, losing 11 of their last 12.

Hotlanta has to be infuriated right now after blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead to the Knicks and being outscored 51-34 in the first half of the Heat loss.

"It happens," Al Horford said. "That's the way the season is. There are highs and lows. Right now, this is our low."

This team is just too talented to stay down. Expect the Hawks to rise from their “low” and take out their frustrations on New Jersey in what should be a lopsided affair from start to finish.

In their last two meetings, Atlanta outscored the Nets by a margin of 20.0 points per game.

Pick: Hawks

Golden State Warriors at Minnesota Timberwolves (-2.5, 224)

Heading into the first week of 2010, the Warriors are beginning to resemble a competitive squad in the National Basketball Association.

Golden State has won two of its last four which included home wins against the Suns and Celtics. The two losses came on the road in hard-fought games where the Warriors surrendered halftime leads to the Lakers and Trail Blazers.

The return of big men Ronny Turiaf and Andris Biedrins has provided a frontcourt presence the Warriors desperately needed. Turiaf has been back in the lineup for four games after not playing since late November because of a knee injury while Biedrins appeared in his first game of the season last Monday versus Boston.

Biedrins, last year’s starting center, has been eased back into the fold, averaging just over 20 minutes a game and contributing five rebounds per. Turiaf provides a "Charlie Hustle" type of effort every time he steps onto the floor even when he’s not 100 percent.

“I don’t enjoy playing hurt, but I am trying to go out there and play to the best of my abilities and help my teammates,” said Turiaf, who is expected to start on Wednesday. “I can pick up those chip fouls and be a defensive presence at the beginning of the game.”

Guard Monta Ellis continues to power Golden State’s offensive attack. He ranks sixth in the league in scoring with a 25.7 points per game average and has scored 22 or more in eight straight outings.

Ellis leads the team in assists, dishing them out at more than 5 per game and also ranks second in the NBA in steals, posting 2.25 per contest.

Golden State has covered in four of its last five and face a Timberwolves team they beat by 41 points at home in early November. That game was the second in a back-to-back schedule and this will be as well. The Warriors are 5-2 ATS in B2B situations this season.

Home side won last eight Wisconsin-Michigan State games; Badgers lost last four visits here by 13-9-9-11 points, but they're 4-1 overall in last five series games, beating State twice in Big 11 tourney. Badgers won last six games, winning by 17 at Penn State last game- their losses are by 13-4 points this year. Big 11 home favorites are 4-2 vs spread.

VCU/Drexel both playing third game in five nights; Rams won last six in series, hammering Drexel 75-46 here LY. Underdogs are 11-4 vs spread in CAA games, 3-1 at home. VCU won eight of last 10 games but is 1-2 in CAA, losing by 5 at home to Northeastern Monday. Drexel snapped three-game skid with win at Georgia State Monday; they're 2-1 in CAA.

Louisville won last five games vs Providence, beating Friars 73-55 in Big East tourney LY; Cardinals won last two visits here by 8-5 points. Big East home underdogs are 1-5 vs spread. Pirates come close a lot, can't get over the hump.

Home team is 11-1 in last 12 Northern Iowa-Southern Illinois games, as Panthers won here 59-51 LY, their first win in last six visits here. Salukis won six of last seven games, losing only MVC road game, at Illinois State by 7. UNI won last 10 games, is 3-0 in Valley, winning by 8-19-8 pts. Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres (-200, 5.5)

Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller backed up why he should be starting between the posts for Team America in the upcoming winter games with a brilliant shutout against the Montreal Canadiens Sunday.

Miller turned away all 30 shots that came his way, posting his third straight win and picking up his fifth clean sheet of the season. The Sabres’ 1-0 victory was their fourth win in a row heading into Wednesday’s matchup with the Lightning.

"That was a pretty solid effort," coach Lindy Ruff told reporters after Sunday’s win. "It was maybe a little sluggish the first 10 minutes, but after that I liked our compete, I liked our battle. I thought we made it really tough on them to get high-quality opportunities."

Buffalo has supported its goalies with solid scoring efforts during this streak. The Sabres scored 13 total goals in the first three games of this stretch before getting a solo goal from Tim Connolly Sunday. Connolly, who leads the team in scoring, has recorded seven points over the four-game winning run.

St. Louis Blues at San Jose Sharks (-250, 5.5)

Well, I guess that’s why they call it the Blues.

St. Louis hasn’t won in five games, axed their head coach and now heads West to face the NHL’s top team. Despite these dark days, interim head coach Davis Payne is trying to keep things light and breezy. During his first practice with the team, Payne skated up to each player and forced them to crack a smile.

"It's tough to have fun when you're not winning," forward Brad Boyes told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He's coming in here and making sure that we lighten up a bit. He's been saying, 'We're playing hockey, let's have some fun ... when we do that, good things will come.'"

Things will likely get worse before they get better for the Blues. Payne is introducing his philosophies into the game plan and there is bound to be some growing pains. St. Louis hasn’t had trouble scoring in recent games, scoring three goals in each of its five losses and bumping the final score over the total in each contest.

"We've got to go through an evaluation process ... take our time, but do it quickly," Payne told reporters. "I think we're getting into that stage. We have 41 games left in the season, and that's not a lot of time to be tinkering ...

"We've got to get there, and we've got to get there Wednesday against San Jose. The expectation is to take what we've given them over these next couple of days and have that show up Wednesday. The grace period for that ends at whatever Pacific time we're kicking off on Wednesday."

San Jose has the ninth-best defense in the NHL, allowing only 2.5 goals per game. The Sharks are coming off a 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings and will be tightening up on defense before Wednesday’s game.
