    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, January 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rockets look to blast past the Lakers, the Wild meet the Hawks, and Iowa takes on Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's Iowa (10-2 SU, 8-3 ATS) vs. Georgia Tech (11-2 SU, 8-4 ATS) in the Orange Bowl at Miami's LandShark Stadium on Tuesday night. The No. 10 Hawkeyes blanked Minnesota 12-0 in their regular-season finale, with Brandon Wegher rushing for the team's lone touchdown; Iowa starting QB Ricky Stanzi (ankle) will return to action on Tuesday. The No. 9 Yellow Jackets beat Clemson 39-34 last time out to win the ACC championship. Georgia Tech is listed by the oddsmakers as the 5-point favorite for the Orange Bowl, with the game's total at 50.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's nine-game slate for Tuesday includes Houston at the Lakers, with the Rockets (20-14 SU, 20-14 ATS) coming off a 99-95 loss in New Orleans on Saturday. Trevor Ariza had a team-high 19 points for Houston in that defeat, while Chuck Hayes was good for nine points and 13 rebounds. The Lakers destroyed the Mavericks 131-96 in their last game on Sunday night, with Lamar Odom picking up 15 points and 15 boards. Jordan Farmar had 24 points that day.

Rounding out the NBA's schedule for Tuesday: Orlando at Indiana, Washington at Philadelphia, Chicago at Charlotte, Milwaukee at New Jersey, Detroit at Dallas, Golden State at Denver, Memphis at Portland, and Phoenix at Sacramento. The Suns dropped to 21-13 SU (19-14-1 ATS) on the season with a 128-103 loss to Memphis on Saturday; Amare Stoudemire had a game-high 29 points for the Suns in that contest, while Steve Nash had 19 points and 13 assists. The Kings head into this Tuesday matchup on a three-game losing skid.

As well, the top teams in action around college basketball on Tuesday are Texas and Purdue, with the 13-0 Longhorns playing on the road against Arkansas and the 13-0 Boilermakers getting a visit from Minnesota. Purdue (6-6-1 ATS) kept their perfect record intact with a 77-62 win over West Virginia in their last game on Friday. JaJuan Johnson led the way with 25 points and 10 boards in the win.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up 10 games on Tuesday night, including Minnesota at Chicago. The 20-19-3 Wild will be looking to bounce back from a 5-3 loss to the Devils in their last game on Saturday; Eric Belanger, Mikko Koivu, and Andrew Brunette scored for Minnesota in that contest. The 29-10-3 Blackhawks had no trouble with the Ducks on Sunday night, cruising to a 5-2 victory. Marian Hossa had a pair of goals for Chicago in that victory, while Patrick Kane had two assists.

Also on the ice on Tuesday: Florida at Toronto, Montreal at Washington, Dallas at New Jersey, Boston at Ottawa, Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Calgary at Nashville, Phoenix at Edmonton, Columbus at Vancouver, and Detroit at Anaheim. The 21-14-6 Red Wings won their second straight game on Saturday, getting past the Coyotes by a score of 4-1. The 16-19-7 Ducks have now lost three games in a row; Petteri Nokelainen had both Ducks goals in their Sunday loss to the Hawks.

      Mismatched rematches

NFL fans are sure to experience deja vu this weekend when three of the four first-round games are rematches from Week 17, the first time that's happened in NFL history.

Only twice have there been multiple next-week rematches in the playoffs, two in 1993 and 2001. Don't look too deep for any trends because the winning team from the regular-season meeting went 1-1 in the ensuing playoff games.

But there have been 13 next-week meetings since 1943 and the winning team of the first game is only 5-8 SU in the playoff rematch. The revenge factor is underrated, especially in light of Sunday's blowouts in these three games.

The Cowboys, Packers and Jets beat their upcoming playoff foes by a combined score of 94-7 and those numbers are fresh on the losing teams' egos or the general betting public's short-term memory.

Only the Cowboys (-4) are favored among the three winners, with the Jets and Packers are catching field goals or less. Tempting to go with what happened seven days ago, but don't forget what happened over the seven decades before.

      Burned-out Blazers

Hate to beat a dead horse, or in this case a wounded Trail Blazer, but how long can a team go with as many players on the injured list (eight) as on the court? Especially on zero-days rest following an overnight flight back from Monday's game against the L.A. Clippers.

The shorthanded Blazers welcome the red-hot Memphis Grizzlies, who have won six of their last seven SU and are 3-0 ATS on the road in that span. They've also hit five straight overs and their up-and-down pace could expose the Blazers' lack of depth.

The young Grizzlies have the fresh legs (healthy ones too) after three days off. The line and total have not yet been released.

      Blackhawks down

Chicago has won three in a row and Minnesota has lost three straight, so the odds are obviously tilted heavily in the Blackhawks' favor.

But the Wild seems to have the Blackhawks' number, going 18-6-1 SU in the last 25 meetings and 8-2 in the last 10 in Chi-town.

Better yet, the Blackhawks will start Josh Harding in the net. He has struggled this season with a 3.40 goal-against average, an .873 save percentage and a 2-5 record.

Chicago is -240 with a total of 5.5.

      Notable quotable

''I have no idea what was going through his mind, but as far as him wanting to end his life, no, he had too much going on. I know he wouldn't want to be gone away from his kids. He loves his kids. And everything was going really good. It's just that one day ...''

Lolelini Tonga, the fiancee of late Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, telling ESPN's ''Outside The Lines'' about the the day Henry fell to his death from the back of the truck she was driving.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- College of Charleston upset North Carolina 82-79 in OT; Tar Heels were missing two starters, but still, Cougars were only 7-6 coming in.

-- This is why big-name programs don't like to visit mid-majors, but a terrific win for Charleston and coach Bobby Cremins.

-- February 3 is huge day for college football-- Signing Day for recruits, which means it is important for Texas Tech to name a coach soon.

-- Will they hire a coach who will keep Mike Leach's offense?

-- Ironic thing is if Tech moves away from Leach's offense, it hurts the chances of Adam James playing for Tech-- they'll need fewer WRs.

-- Rumors late Monday have Leach going to Oakland Raiders, which is a weird idea, but would fit how the Raiders have been run recently.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) The four teams that got byes in NFL playoffs LY? None of them got into this year's tournament. That's the modern NFL.

        12) Dallas beat the Eagles twice this year; since 1970, teams that beat their playoff opponent twice during season are 12-7 against them in playoffs, but Cowboys are 0-2 in that situation.

        11) Say what you want about the Colts holding out their players against the Jets, but don't you think New England wishes they held Welker out? Now he might miss next year too after badly screwing up his knee.

        10) That said, Colts sent mixed messages when they kept Wayne/Clark in at Buffalo until they each caught their 100th pass of the season. At times, Manning and his teammates are a little too stat-conscious.

        9) Rich Brooks retired at Kentucky Monday, ending an underrated career; the man built programs at Oregon/Kentucky, was defensive coordinator at Atlanta when Falcons played in Super Bowl XXXIII, and wasn't terrible in two years coaching the Rams (1995-6).

        8) OK, you're the Broncos, your season could be on the line Sunday and you give up 314 rushing yards and two defensive TDs? Not good.

        7) Oddest thing I learned this NFL season; I don't know who Tila Tequila is, but it would appear that its dangerous to hang around with her.

        6) Bills, Redskins both canned their coaches Monday. Jim Zorn winds up with same 12-20 record that Steve Spurrier had coaching the Skins.

        5) It almost seems like Daniel Snyder is running a perpetual head coaching job search, which is occasionally interrupted by actual football seasons.

        4) Boston College lost to Maine in basketball Saturday, 52-51. Not often an ACC team loses to an America East squad.

        3) Fullerton lost by four at Cal-Davis Saturday; they were 13-28 from the foul line. Long Beach lost by hoop in OT at Riverside; they were 17-35 at the charity stripe. I could go outside right now and make six of 10. Jeez.

        2) Shane Lechler missed out on Sammy Baugh's punting record, but read on SI.com that Baugh had 38 quick kicks that year, which inflated his punting average by a decent amount. Still, the man played both ways, but in terms of pure punting, Lechler may just have had the best season ever.

        1) Gilbert Arenas apparently lost $60,000 to JaVale McGee playing cards; the moral of the story: never play cards with anyone named Slim or a guy who went to college in Reno.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Dallas Mavericks (-8.5, 187)

The last time the Detroit Pistons tasted victory was Dec. 12, 2009. The Pistons were only one game under .500 at 11-12 and some thought new head coach John Kuester was an early candidate for coach of the year.

The overhauled Pistons now take a nine-game losing streak into Dallas, which marks the longest losing streak for the Pistons since the 1993-94 season, and they have lost those nine games by an average of 13 points.

"You go through spurts, and this is a bad spurt for us right now," Kuester said. "We're not doing a number of things well, and when it rains it pours. We've got to get back on the right track."

Last time these two teams met in November, Dirk Nowitzki had 25 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots in a 95-90 win at The Palace.

Detroit backers hope extra practice time between games will give the Pistons an edge, but it's unlikely the visitors will be able to keep up with the Mavs.

              Pick: Mavericks

Golden State Warriors at Denver Nuggets (N/A)

The Denver Nuggets may be without their 1-2 scoring punch of Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups in Tuesday night's home game against the Golden State Warriors.

Anthony, who has missed the last two games with a knee bruise, told reporters the injury is worse than what he originally thought, while Anthony also is listed as questionable with a groin injury after having missed seven of the last eight games.

Although both probably could play if pressed into action, a report from the Colorado Sports Desk said ''it is likely they will both get rest again before the high-key match up this Friday against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.''

Denver also is without Chris ''Birdman'' Anderson, who went down with a severe ankle sprain and is listed as doubtful.

That's good news for Golden State, which is far from being Road Warriors this season. They are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 road games but have covered four of their last five games overall.

The Nuggets have lost four of their last five ATS and may be ripe for the picking as a shorthanded squad looking forward to a date with King James & Co.

              Pick: Warriors

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Ottawa Senators (-120, 5.5)

Alex Kovalev responded to the news that he wouldn’t be a part of the Russian hockey team in the upcoming Winter Olympics by netting four goals in Ottawa’s 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Sunday night.

The Senators are hoping this is a sign of things to come in the New Year for the Russian winger who hadn’t scored in 11 games since getting a hat trick at home against the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 12.

“All I can say is it’s a good way to start 2010,” Kovalev told the Ottawa Sun. “Hopefully, that’s the way it’s going to go for me the rest of the season.”

Kovalev has been nothing if not inconsistent this year, but he has performed at a much higher level at home, scoring nine of his 11 goals there. The Senators have also been successful at Scotiabank Place winning five of their last seven home games.

Conversely, Boston has lost five of its last seven on the road.

                          Pick: Ottawa

Columbus Blue Jackets at Vancouver Canucks (-220, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks seem to have finally turned things around. The team that had won only three road games in the first six weeks of the season just earned a 3-0-1 record on its latest four-game road swing through Calgary, Phoenix, St. Louis and Dallas.

Goalie Roberto Luongo has been impressive, most recently stopping 31 of the Stars’ 32 shots on goal, including 13 straight in the third period in a 3-1 win Saturday night. And even the lesser-know players have been coming up big.

“I think everybody is contributing to the team’s success: all four lines, all six Ds,” winger Alex Burrows told the Vancouver Sun. “Special teams are a big part of the game, too. Our PK has improved a lot.”

The Columbus Blue Jackets, on the other hand, have struggled lately, losing nine of their last 10 games. The Blue Jackets offense has had trouble putting up points with eight of their last 10 outings going under the posted total.

                          Pick: Under
