    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, December 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Oklahoma meets Stanford in the Sun Bowl, while the Rangers face the Hurricanes, and the Mavericks seek a win in Houston.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are five bowl games on the schedule for Thursday, with Houston vs. Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl, Navy vs. Missouri in the Texas Bowl, Minnesota vs. Iowa State in the Insight Bowl, Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, and Oklahoma vs. Stanford in the Sun Bowl. The Sooners (7-5 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) beat Oklahoma State 27-0 last time out, while the Cardinal (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) are coming off a 45-38 win over Notre Dame. Oklahoma is listed as a 10-point favorite for the bowl matchup, with the game's total set at 55.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has five games on tap for Thursday, with Chicago at Detroit, Miami at San Antonio, Utah at Oklahoma City, Philadelphia at the Clippers, and Dallas at Houston. The Mavericks improved to 22-9 on the season (16-15 ATS) with a 104-96 win in Denver last time out on Sunday; Drew Gooden had 19 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Dallas in that contest. The Rockets won't have former All-Star Tracy McGrady in the lineup on Thursday, as he's left the team and is waiting for a trade. Houston won 116-108 in Dallas back on December 18.

On the college hardwood there's just one Top-10 team in action on Thursday, with No. 7 Duke playing host to Pennsylvania. However, the day's top matchup has No. 15 Ohio State at No. 23 Wisconsin. The Buckeyes (10-2 SU, 6-6 ATS) had no problem with Cleveland State last time out, rolling to a 72-59 victory behind 30 points from David Lighty. The Badgers (10-2 SU, 6-4 ATS) blasted Illinois-Chicago 79-43 last time out, as Jon Leuer tossed in a team-high 17 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up a busy slate of 11 games on New Year's Eve, with Montreal at Florida, the Islanders at Ottawa, Nashville at Columbus, Colorado at Detroit, San Jose at Phoenix, Vancouver at St. Louis, Los Angeles at Minnesota, Anaheim at Dallas, New Jersey at Chicago, Edmonton at Calgary, and the Rangers at Carolina. The Rangers won't have forward Vaclav Prospal in the lineup on Thursday; he'll be out for two to three weeks with a knee injury. The Hurricanes fell to 10-22-7 on the year with a 6-3 loss to the Capitals on Monday.

Bettors' best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Thursday, December 31

      Privateer matter

New Orleans could be without its best player for the third consecutive game when the Privateers host Middle Tennessee State on Wednesday.

Leading scorer Billy Humphrey (17.7 ppg) has been hampered by a knee injury and is questionable for the game against the Blue Raiders.

New Orleans has dropped its last two games sans its scoring catalyst, getting blown out by 15 points in each and failing to cover the spread.

The Privateers are 5-point underdogs to the visiting Blue Raiders with a total of 124.5. The over has cashed in the last four matchups of this series.

      Why the frown Charlie Brown?

After Tuesday’s 104-87 loss to the Knicks, Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva went off.

"I don't know what it is," said Villanueva, who only played 12 minutes in the game. "I'm not going to suit up so they can monitor my minutes. I'm suiting up because I feel like I can play."

Detroit is still searching for team cohesion as Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince come back into the fold after missing significant time with injuries.

Villanueva is averaging 14.0 points and 5.2 rebounds this season, but has played spotty defense of late and averaged 3.6 ppg in his last five games.

The Pistons are favored by 3.5 at home against the Bulls with a total of 184. Chicago is 8-1-1 ATS in the last 10 games of this series.

      Nasty Nashville

The lowly, last-place Blue Jackets will likely add to their miseries when the Predators invade Ohio on Wednesday.

Nashville is 21-2-2 against Columbus since the 2006-07 campaign and has won all three meetings this season.

The Preds will look to get back to winning ways after dropping three of their last four while the Jackets have lost 18 of their last 21 contests.

Surprisingly, Columbus is a -120 favorite with a total of 5.5.

      Thunderous applause

Oklahoma City has been an absolute money machine during the last week, going 5-0 ATS in its last five outings including a road win over Phoenix and a road cover versus the Lake Show.

"We're playing pretty decent right now. We can't get complacent," Kevin Durant said. "We know in the back of our heads it's our first four-game winning streak in a couple of years. We're excited about that, but we have to work hard every day."

Oklahoma City's opponent, the Utah Jazz, will be in a back-to-back situation after defeating Minnesota on Tuesday. The Jazz are 3-3 straight up and 4-2 ATS in B2B scenarios this season.

The Thunder opened as 2.5-point home favorites with a total of 198. The over is 8-0 in Utah’s last eight games versus the Northwest Division.

      Notable Quotable

“Look here, me and (Darrelle) Revis is better than (Manny) Pacquiao and (Floyd) Mayweather. Period. Case closed. I don't care what anybody is doing Sunday night. If you don't tune in to the game Sunday, you have no life. My friend Darrelle, Master Lock, I call him Master Lock. Master Lock Revis has put a lot of great receivers on him this season. That will not happen this upcoming (week). Darrelle Revis couldn't come at me in a brown paper bag on a corner of a Manhattan street in a phone booth.”

-- Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco on the matchup between him and Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis Sunday.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs (-7.5, 195)

The Heat should be thankful they’re not home for New Year’s. With all the parties, after parties and after-after parties happening on South Beach, it would be a wonder if anyone showed up for the game.

But they’re not in Miami, they’re in San Antonio.

Heading into Wednesday’s game against the New Orleans Hornets, the Heat have won five of their last six games and are picking up steam in the Southeast Division. During that span head coach Erik Spoelstra has shared the love at point guard, splitting time between Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo.

The juggling seems to be paying off. Miami will counter San Antonio’s All-Star point guard Tony Parker with its two-pronged attack, trying to wear down the scrappy slasher with fresh bodies.

"Much has been made of big-ticket, All-Star-level point guards,'' Spoelstra told the Miami Herald. ''We have a two-headed point guard, and they've been playing very effectively for us.

"It's been a good formula, and so we'll just continue with it like that.''

That also leaves shooting guard Dwyane Wade free to move with the ball and create. He’s thrived with Chalmers and Arroyo handling the ball, averaging 28 points during the team’s three-game win streak.

            Pick: Heat

Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls (-3.5, 184)

The Pistons blamed their early-season swoon on injuries. But now that Richard Hamilton, Ben Gordon and Tayshaun Prince have returned, the team had no idea how to play - or more importantly - win with each other.

Detroit has lost eight straight games heading into Thursday. The most recent defeat came at the hands of the New York Knicks, who shot 51 percent from the field and limited the Pistons to just 42 percent shooting in a 104-87 beating Tuesday night.

"We have a lot of basketball left, but we have to take advantage of all these opportunities," Pistons coach John Kuester told the media. "Getting people back does not mean that you forget what gets you in a position to win, and that's effort, your energy, your understanding of your game plan. We didn't successfully do that consistently."

Prince has struggled to contribute on offense, scoring a total of 11 points in his two games since returning from an abdominal injury. Fellow forward Charlie Villanueva has also struggled since the return of the stars. He bookended an eight-point performance with two goose eggs against the Knicks and Raptors while dealing with foot issues and illness.

"It's still going to take time," Hamilton told reporters of the transition in the lineup. "It's not something that we expect to happen overnight. That just doesn't happen, especially with me and Tayshaun being out as many games as we've been and (Gordon) being out as many games as he's been out.

"It's going to take time. The one thing we want to do is just stay positive with it, stay confident with it, and hopefully, it will turn around."

            Pick: Bulls

Helpside defense: NBA betting news and notes
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Flip finally flips

After Tuesday's 110-98 home loss to Oklahoma City, Washington Wizards coach Flip Saunders finally lost patience with his underachieving team, particularly on the defensive end.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Saunders said, "We could take five guys in this room out here and we could have a chance. I think I can go out there on the floor and take anybody on the team, 1-on-1 at (54) years old, and drive right around them. They can't guard anybody."

The over/under is 8-4 in Washington's last dozen games. Despite being 10th in opponents' field-goal percentage, the Wizards are 23rd in points allowed at 102.9 per game.

Washington is off until Saturday, when it hosts San Antonio. The Spurs crushed the Wizards, 106-84, on Nov. 21.

              D'Antoni does defense

The book on coach Mike D'Antoni is that he is an offensive innovator whose philosophy of shooting in "Seven Seconds or Less" doesn't put much emphasis on the defensive end.

The recent numbers tell a different story. The Knicks have played to the under in their last eight games, with the number ranging from 194 to 202 - meager totals by D'Antoni's previous standards. And New York has not given up triple digits in a loss since Dec. 2 at Orlando.

D'Antoni has anchored offense-only players Eddy Curry and Nate Robinson to the bench while giving regular playing time to Jonathan Bender, who clearly is not ready for the rigors of the NBA. And while the Knicks shoot plenty of 3-pointers, only one rotation player - Danilo Gallinari - is making them at better than 33 percent.

Unless D'Antoni radically alters his rotation, expect this unlikely trend to continue.

              No bang for your Bucks

Since scoring 55 points in an early season game, Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings has gotten plenty of attention. The Bucks roll into town, and the local beat writer does a piece on the hotshot rookie.

Here's a better story idea: The Bucks have been so bad lately that their stars have been benched. Monday's loss at Charlotte was Milwaukee's 14th in its last 18 games, and coach Scott Skiles sat Andrew Bogut and Michael Redd for the entire second half.

Bogut and Redd, who will make an aggregate $27 million this season, were a combined 1-of-10 in the first half.

"It's not so much producing. It's body language and the way we look out there," Skiles said afterward. "The bottom line: this is the NBA. You have to produce. It's what pro sports is. And we need more consistent production out of our key players."

The Bucks also are not producing for bettors, going 1-4 against the spread after winning five in a row. They have three winnable games before a murderous six-game road trip, so their ability to snap out of it could make or break their season.

              Misfiring Pistons

No NBA squad this season has been streakier than the Detroit Pistons, who for extended stretches have looked like both a potential top-four seed and a lottery team.

After a 2-4 start, the Pistons have won three straight, lost seven in a row, won six of seven and lost eight in a row. The current slide also includes an 0-8 mark against the spread.

Detroit has had injury issues, with Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Ben Gordon - arguably its three best players - missing significant time. But the Pistons put together wins without that trio, so the problems go deeper than that. And now, rookie coach John Kuester has to quickly incorporate the returning players.

"Getting everyone acclimated is a part of the NBA," Kuester told the Detroit News. "We need to lock in to what we have to do, taking care of business. We have to have a sense of urgency."

The Pistons play just once in the next six days, giving them some practice time before a Texas two-step through Dallas and San Antonio next week.

              On the schedule

Friday, January 1, Orlando at Minnesota

The Magic are 10-5 on the road and overdue with three straight losses both straight up and ATS. They have won and covered their last three visits to Minnesota and are unlikely to brave single-digit temperatures to party on New Year's Eve.

Saturday, January 2, Memphis at Phoenix

The Grizzlies are 13-8 straight up since a 1-8 start and have climbed to the cusp of the Western Conference playoff race. This is the opener of a three-game road trip vs. West teams that could reveal a lot about Memphis, which is 4-5 straight up and ATS in its last nine road games. The Griz were thumped, 126-111, at Phoenix on Nov. 25.

Tuesday, January 5, Golden State at Denver

Since a 111-103 win at Dallas on Nov. 24, the Warriors have lost nine of 10 road games, winning only at woeful New Jersey. They are 3-6-1 ATS in those games and venture into the Pepsi Center, where the Nuggets are a solid 13-2 straight up, including a 135-107 pasting of Golden State on Dec. 1.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders at Ottawa Senators (-145, 5.5)

Don’t look now, but the Islanders have a good thing going, winning three of their last four games heading into Thursday’s matchup with the Ottawa Senators.

Leading the charge during this span is goaltender Dwayne Roloson. He’s backstopped the Isles in each of those wins, giving up just four goals on 108 total shots. Roloson stopped 41 shots for a 2-1 shootout win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday.

In the shootout, Roloson shut down the Jackets’ top guns, Kristian Huselius, Rick Nash and Fedor Tyutin, for the win.

"That's from being lucky and knowing the guy for a while," Roloson told the media. "Rick likes to do a couple of different things. I just tried to stay with him as best as I could."

New York now hits the road for four of its next five games. The Islanders are just 7-10-2-3 away from home this season but won their last two road contests – both over the New York Rangers.

                        Pick: Rangers

Vancouver Canucks at St. Louis Blues (+110, 5.5)

The St. Louis Blues’ list of New Year’s resolutions is getting longer the more the team struggles. The Blues have dropped three straight games, giving up 13 goals in that span.

The most recent defeat was a 4-3 loss to the Nashville Predators Tuesday night. St. Louis took seven penalties for 16 minutes in which the Predators netted a power-play goal in the second period. The Blues rallied in the third period, scoring two goals but couldn’t close the gap in time.

The offense isn’t the issue with the Blues. They’ve scored three goals in each of the past three games, pushing the final score over the total. On the year, St. Louis is 16-20-3 over/under but has played over the number in seven of its last 10 games.

                        Pick: Over

Pucking the trends: NHL betting news & notes
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Pacific pride

According to Eric Stephens of the Orange Country Register, the emergence of the Phoenix Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings mean that the Pacific division is the best division in the NHL.

"It's not been any secret that the five years that we've been here, the division that we play in is one of the toughest in hockey," said Anaheim Ducks coach Randy Carlyle.

The five teams in the Pacific division (Phoenix, Los Angeles, the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, and Dallas Stars) have combined for 233 points - the most of any NHL division.

"We have a division that's extremely tough to win in. But it only forces you to be better in all your areas."

No “I” in team (Or Bryzgalov)

At 24-13-3, the Phoenix Coyotes have one of the best records in the NHL.

According to Coyotes defenseman Adrian Aucoin, "You see it time and again, especially since the lockout, you have these teams that people don't expect to play well. You don't need superstars; you just need everyone to play really well.”

As Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic reveals, coach Dave Tippett credits the Coyotes’ success to their ability to play as a team and the play of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

"Bryz has been excellent for us…but for the most part, I would say our strength right now is we're a good team. We play a good team game.”

                          Holy Halak

According to Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette, the strong play of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak and the early return of defenseman Andrei Markov could be a turning point for the Canadiens.

Until Monday’s loss in Ottawa, Halak had faced at least 40 shots in his last four games and had led Montreal to victory in all four of those games.

Halak was recently named the NHL’s First Star of the Week, after posing a 3-0 record, 1.97 goals against average and a .959 save percentage.

Halak will almost certainly be in net for long shot Slovakia during the upcoming Winter Olympics.

                          Flying high?

A week ago the Philadelphia Flyers were on a 3-13-1 stretch, missing their top two goaltenders and about to head out on a season-long six game road trip.

Behind third-string goaltender Michael Leighton, the Flyers have won three games in a row and are back to .500 at 18-18-2.

"It's not always pretty," said Flyers forward Danny Briere. "When you're in a tough stretch, you have to find a way to win tight games. We did that [Saturday] night in Carolina and we did that again [Sunday] night. These are two pretty big steps for our team.”

Frank Serravalli of the Philadelphia News is of the opinion that the Flyers have recently improved their penalty kill and have been creating short-handed opportunities.

"When we needed it, it came out strong," Briere said of the penalty kill. "You can see when we do well on the PK it is a totally different team."

                          On Schedule

Thursday December 31, Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers

The Habs end their six-game road trip with a game against the Florida Panthers on New Year’s Eve. It will be their second in as many nights and third road game in four nights.

January 2, Atlanta Thrashers at New York Islanders

Game 6 of Atlanta’s season-long seven-game road trip is also its third in four nights. The Thrashers have lost their last five games.

January 3, Anaheim Ducks at Chicago Blackhawks

In the midst of a stretch that has Anaheim playing 10 of 12 games on the road, the Ducks play three road games in four nights. The Ducks play in Nashville Saturday before taking on the Hawks at the United Center Sunday.
