    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, December 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sharks battle the Capitals, the Celtics try for a win in Phoenix, and the Wildcats and Cornhuskers meet in a bowl game.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are two bowl games on tap for Wednesday, with Bowling Green vs. Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl, and No. 22 Arizona vs. No. 20 Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. The Wildcats (8-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) slipped past USC 21-17 in their last game of the regular season, while the Cornhuskers (9-4 SU, 8-5 ATS) fell 13-12 to Texas last time out. The oddsmakers have Nebraska pegged as a 1-point favorite at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, with the total for the matchup at 41.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are 10 games around the NBA on Wednesday, with Charlotte at Toronto, Milwaukee at Orlando, Memphis at Indiana, Atlanta at Cleveland, New York at New Jersey, Utah at Minnesota, Miami at New Orleans, the Clippers at Portland, Philadelphia at Sacramento, and Boston at Phoenix. The Celtics (23-7 SU, 13-17 ATS) were beaten 103-99 in Golden State in their last game on Monday night, with Rajon Rondo scoring 30 points. The Suns (20-12 SU, 18-13-1 ATS) got past the Lakers 118-103 Monday night, as Amare Stoudemire was good for 26 points.

As well, ranked teams in action in college hoops on Wednesday include No. 10
Connecticut (at Cincinnati), No. 11 Michigan State (vs. Texas Arlington), No. 24 UAB (at Virginia), No. 18 Temple (at Northern Illinois), No. 25 Northwestern (at Illinois), and No. 9 North Carolina (vs. Albany). The Tar Heels (10-3 SU, 4-6 ATS) had no trouble taking care of Rutgers in their last game, cruising to an 81-67 victory behind 18 points from Dexter Strickland. North Carolina is 9-0 at home.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up eight games on Wednesday, with Atlanta at Boston, Pittsburgh at New Jersey, Philadelphia at the Rangers, Colorado at Ottawa, Montreal at Tampa Bay, Los Angeles at Calgary, Toronto at Edmonton, and Washington at San Jose. The 24-9-6 Capitals were doubled up 6-3 by Carolina on Monday night, with Alex Ovechkin scoring his 26th of the season. The 24-8-7 Sharks have won five games in a row, topping Phoenix by a score of 3-2 on Monday night. Joe Pavelski potted the shootout winner for the Sharks in that win.

      Pack it in Pac-10

The Pac-10 conference dominated college football’s postseason last year after going undefeated in five bowl appearances, but 2009 has been a different story.

Oregon State and Cal suffered double-digit losses to Mountain West schools as 3-point favorites. USC prevailed over Boston College in the Pac-10’s first win of the bowl season, but didn’t look pretty doing it and was aided by some generous calls. And UCLA needed a miracle interception return for a touchdown with six minutes left in the game to defeat Temple.

Arizona will try to save some conference pride against Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. The Wildcats faced some healthy early season opponents in Central Michigan and Iowa, but went 0-3 ATS in non-conference games.

The line for this game opened as a ‘pick’ but swung toward Arizona up to 1.5. The Cornhuskers have since picked up heavy steam and made them a 2.5-point favorite with a low total of 40.5. The under is 11-3 in Nebraska's last 14 games.

      Great Scott!

Virginia will host the No. 24-ranked UAB Blazers on Wednesday and could possibly be without one of its primary producers for the fourth straight game.

Forward Mike Scott is first on the team in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and second in scoring (13.1 ppg), but has been battling a sprained ankle. The Cavaliers are 2-1 without Scott in the lineup, but the two wins were in non-lined games against Hampton and New Jersey Tech.

UAB is 11-1 and winners of 10 straight under former Indiana coach Mike Davis who in his fourth season with the team. The Blazers have covered in three consecutive games against formidable opponents in Butler, South Alabama and Cincinnati and are 7-3 ATS on the year.

Behind head coach Tony Bennett’s slow-paced and defensive ideology, a low total of 124 has been set for this affair. Virginia opened as 2-point favorites.

      Son of a bench

Bucks head coach Scott Skiles wasn’t pleased with the performance of two of his star players Monday night. Guard Michael Redd and center Andrew Bogut watched the entire second half of a 94-84 loss to the Bobcats from the bench.

"It's not so much producing, it's body language and the way we look out there," Skiles said. "The bottom line: this is the NBA. You have to produce. And we need more consistent production out of our key players."

Carlos Delfino was also benched for the final two stanzas and it appears Skiles could stick with some of the lineup changes.

"We have defensive issues, no question," Skiles said. "And yet in the second half, with that group out there, we looked very good defensively. We're trying to find enough guys that will commit to that and we'll keep searching until we find it."

Milwaukee’s recent downward spiral is obviously affecting players’ motivation. The team has lost six of its last seven, going 3-4 ATS during that span.

Orlando has defeated the Bucks in seven straight home games and outscored Milwaukee by a 14.7 ppg margin in those contests. The Magic are 10.5-point favorites with a total of 193.

      Roy-ale with cheese

Trail Blazers swingman Brandon Roy is doing all he can to keep his team afloat amidst a rash of injuries. The former Washington Huskie has scored 20-plus points in 13 straight games, which established an NBA record.

Portland has won six of their last eight, but are only 7-6 straight up and 6-6-1 ATS during Roy’s streak.

If Marcus Camby can get into the lineup for the Clippers on Wednesday, the visitors have a chance to upend the Blazers because of their lack of an inside presence. Portland was outscored 60-40 in the paint during a defeat to the Sixers on Monday. Chris Kaman and Camby could do some damage against Portland down low, but the latter is questionable after injuring his knee last Friday.

The Blazers have won and covered in the last three games of this series, but the Clips have cashed in three of the last four in Portland. The home team is favored by 7.5 with a total of 198.

      Tyreke the Terrific

Kings point guard Tyreke Evans is the frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award and the catalyst behind Sacramento’s surprising success this season. But the team got a big win over the Nuggets on Monday night without their king on the court.

Reports surfaced prior to the game that Evans would play, but a left ankle sprain kept him on the bench and head coach Paul Westphal said he would be questionable for Wednesday versus the Sixers.

Sac-Town is 11-5 straight up and 10-6 ATS at Arco Arena this season. The Kings are 17-7-1 ATS in their last 25 games overall. Evans has only missed one other game besides Monday and the Kings lost to the Rockets but covered as 11-point underdogs.

      Notable Quotable

“It’s kind of like a quarterback rollout play. I break through the line. I’m running and right as he throws it, I jump and I knock the ball out and the ball lands in (defensive back) Corey Hall’s hands. He runs it back and we win off that play.”

-- Arizona Wilcats defensive tackle Donald Horton explaining the recurring dream he has where the winning play defeats the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Holiday Bowl.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Congrats to Steven Jackson on making Pro Bowl. Very deserving.

-- Idaho is in a bowl despite allowing 50 ppg in last five games (1-4).

-- Average total in the last five Rose Bowls, 66.4.

-- Someone has to explain to me why Temple coach Al Golden wasn't wearing a jacket, despite 30 degree temps, 30 mph winds Tuesday.

-- MAC teams are now 0-10 in bowls the last 2+ seasons.

-- No Bengals made the Pro Bowl? Not one? They're 10-5!!!!

Wednesday's List of 13: 2009: Year of the Debasco.......

        13) Coined a new word Monday night; was trying to think of something really terrible, a disaster, and come up with a word to adequately describe it. Came up with debasco-- a combination of debacle and fiasco.

        12) 2009 was Year of the Debasco, and the worst one we can think of is Eldrick Woods-- has anyone had a worse month? To blow that much cash and to fall out of favor so quickly. Its a....well, its a debasco.

        11) Alamo Bowl is clouded in controversy; it might as well be called the Debasco Bowl. Texas Tech coach Leach has been suspended for the game by the school, for apparently mistreating a player who complained of concussion symptoms. The kid is Craig James' son; why would a coach mistreat any kid, but especially one whose father is on national TV talking about college football every week?

        10) Craig James was supposed to work the Alamo Bowl, but ESPN took him off the game. Leach is suing to be allowed to coach. Very messy.

        9) Then there's Michigan State, which has 11 players suspended for the game after a dorm fight in East Lansing. Here's a hint-- if you have 11 of your players suspended, you don't deserve to go to a bowl. Clemson and South Carolina skipped their bowls couple years ago after a brawl in their game. Why didn't the Spartans bow out and let someone else go?

        8) Random food tip-- when at PF Chang's, I recommend the Mangolian Beef with fried rice. Trust me on this, its very good.

        7) Jason Bay finally signed with the Mets, four years, $66M, so Mets have strengthened their lineup, finally. Now they need a catcher and at least one more starting pitcher.

        6) Isn't it time for Matt Holliday to sign with St Louis now?

        5) Northwestern's basketball team is ranked for first time in 40 years, in a year where their best player never played a minute. Wildcats are 7-point underdog at Illinois Wednesday-- interesting game. .

        4) Pistons are paying the piper now for taking Darko Milicic ahead of both Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony. Darko is heading back to Europe next year with a boatland of money and a frown on his face. It wasn't good for him here, but for the Pistons, its been a debasco all their own.

        3) West Virginia was down five with 0:42 left at home against Marquette, but scored game's last six points, with Da'Sean Butler hitting a tough shot with 0:01.8 left. Butler is an excellent player, but West Virginia really does not have a floor general and that hurts them. .

        2) Wednesday night is Must-See TV for Ram fans, as Mr Suh/ Nebraska play Arizona in the Holiday Bowl; I've sat through 15 miserable games as the Rams re-engineer their roster, now I get to see the fruits of these losses and that is the powerful Mr Suh, the #1 pick in next April's draft.

        1) How ridiculous is it that Division I football has no playoff system; the lower divisions all have one, so don't tell me its about academics. As usual, its all about the money, more accurately, who gets the money. Who cares about the Eagle Bank Bowl or the Humanitarian Bowl? I watch the games because I love watching games, but wouldn't a playoff be so much better?

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats at Toronto Raptors (-5.5, 195)

The Raptors are quickly becoming the best bet in basketball after a four-game winning streak. Toronto is coming off a 102-95 win against the Detroit Pistons, who it defeat on both ends of a home-and-home set.

Those four wins have improved the team to 15-17, second in the Atlantic, straight up and against the spread. All-Star forward Chris Bosh told reporters that it took some time for the Raptors to mesh as a cohesive unit after bringing nine new players into the rotation this year.

“To be a good team," Bosh told the Toronto Star, "you have to hold each other accountable and that means you have to come up to somebody and say, 'You need to do something, or you need to rebound.' And if you don't like the guy, you're not going to pay attention to the message, you're going to pay attention to how it's delivered. But we were fine. It just takes time."

The Raptors defense has seen the biggest turnaround during this streak. Toronto is allowing just over 86 points per game in those four wins after allowing opponents to average almost 106 points against this season.

                Pick: Raptors

Boston Celtics at Phoenix Suns (pk, 209)

You can’t blame the Celtics for soaking up too much sun on their current Western road swing. It’s cold in Boston this time of year.

The Celtics got burned against the NBA’s basement, losing back-to-back games to the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors. Against the Warriors, Boston turned the ball over 26 times erasing a 35-22 first-quarter lead.

“The 18-point (first-half) lead doesn’t really mean much,” coach Doc Rivers told the Boston Herald. “They’re an offensive team, and you know they would get back into it. It’s more the turnovers that turned the game.”

The Celtics shot just 5-for-19 from 3-point range and missed seven of their 21 free throws.

They now face a Suns squad coming off a big win over the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday. Phoenix won the most recent meeting with Boston, taking a 110-103 victory as 10.5-point road underdogs on November 6.

                Pick: Suns

Game of the Day: UConn at Cincinnati
                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Connecticut Huskies at Cincinnati Bearcats

                        Robinson peaking

It is hard to not notice Connecticut star Stanley Robinson when he is on the basketball court. His athletic 6-foot-9 body and versatile ways of scoring always make him a matchup nightmare for opposing coaches.

In his third year at UConn, it appears that Robinson is becoming a complete player. He’s scored in double figures in each game this season and scored a season-high 29 points in last week’s win over Iona. He is averaging 17 points per game, up from 8.5 points per game last season.

"Stanley makes the game look easy," UConn coach Jim Calhoun told the Hartford Courant. "And when a guy makes the game look easy, that means there's a lot more he can do."

                        Complete games

Cincinnati has been plagued by inconsistency this year. The Bearcats often play tremendous defense but have labored at times to get into an offensive rhythm, leading to stretches where they can’t score. If Cincinnati is going to compete for an NCAA tournament bid it will need to solve those offensive woes.

“We’ve got the talent to play with just about anybody,” forward Yancy Gates told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “When we’re focused, we’re just as good as anybody running our offense and playing defense. Our weakness right now is just a little immaturity. And we’ve got to get back to rebounding the ball and taking care of the ball.”

Cincinnati only has two players averaging double figures, Lance Stephenson at 12.5 points per game and Gates at 11.1 ppg.

                        Walker struggling

Connecticut point guard Kemba Walker has been struggling shooting the ball in his last four games, going a combined 13-of-42 from the field. He is still a great distributor, with 30 assists in those four games. But if Connecticut is going to win the Big East and make a legitimate run in the NCAA tournament, it is going to need Walker to be a consistent scoring weapon.

“He's just got to take better shots," Calhoun told the Hartford Courant. "Like anything else in life, as soon as someone adjusts to you, you've got to adjust yourself. He's kind of over-penetrating. If we reversed the ball more, and if he reversed the ball more, as opposed to trying to make that initial hit or just going [straight to the basket], he'd be much better off. We're very used to challenging, going into the middle, and that's not anywhere near as available now.”

                        Sixth man

With Big East Conference play beginning for Cincinnati, coach Mick Cronin knows the importance of having depth during the 18-game conference schedule.

Over the last three weeks it has been guard Dion Dixon who has proven that he can be the Bearcats’ sixth man. In Dixon’s last three games, he has averaged better than 12 points per game.

"You look for a guy who can come in off the bench and can change the game. He can come in and give you offensive rebounding. He can give you scoring and he can also give you defensive energy. He's a guy who's had a great attitude this year. He brings a lot of life to our team,” Cronin told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

                        Slow starters

In two late December games against lowly opponents, Connecticut has found itself tied or down at halftime. Against Maine, the Huskies were tied 26-26 at the break and against UCF, they were down 25-20 at halftime before finally winning both games. This level of inconsistency will continue to magnify in conference play when the level of competition improves.

“We just have to be better for longer periods of time. That's the big thing: Can we be better for longer periods of time?" Calhoun told the Hartford Courant.

                        Trends

The under is 7-1 in Connecticut’s last eight road games. Connecticut is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games vs. Big East.

Cincinnati is 0-4 ATS in its last four games overall. Cincinnati is 0-4 ATS in their last four Big East games. The under is 7-1 in Cincinnati’s last eight overall.
