    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, December 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Suns play host to the Lakers, Texas A&M and Georgia meet in bowl action, and the Vikings take to the field on MNF.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL's primetime matchup for Monday has Minnesota (11-3 SU, 8-5-1 ATS) at Chicago (5-9 SU, 4-10 ATS). The Vikings will be looking to bounce back from a 26-7 loss in Carolina last week, with Brett Favre throwing for just 224 yards with no touchdowns and one interception; Adrian Peterson ran for 73 yards. The Bears were thumped 31-7 in Baltimore last week, as Jay Cutler was held to 94 yards passing and was picked off three times. The playoff-bound Vikings are pegged as 7.5-point road favorites for Monday, with the game's total set at 41.5.

There's also one college football bowl game on the Monday schedule, with Texas A&M taking on Georgia in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Aggies (6-6 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) fell 49-39 to Texas in their last game of the regular season, despite a four-touchdown, 342-yard performance from quarterback Jerrod Johnson. The Bulldogs (7-5 SU, 4-7 ATS) are coming off a 30-24 win over Georgia Tech last time out. Oddsmakers have Georgia listed as the 6.5-point favorite for Monday's bowl matchup, with the total for the contest set at 66 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA serves up seven games on Monday, with Milwaukee at Charlotte, Oklahoma City at New Jersey, Washington at Memphis, Philadelphia at Portland, Denver at Sacramento, Boston at Golden State, and the Lakers at the Phoenix. Los Angeles (24-5 SU, 13-16 ATS) improved to 8-2 on the road with a 112-103 win in Sacramento on Saturday. The Suns (19-12 SU, 17-13-1 ATS) were beaten 132-127 in Golden State in their Saturday outing; Steve Nash had 36 points and nine assists in that defeat for the Suns, and Jason Richardson provided 22 points.

As well, the top teams in action around college basketball on Monday are Temple (vs. Bowling Green), Florida (vs. American), Gonzaga (vs. Eastern Washington), and North Carolina (vs. Rutgers). The Tar Heels (9-3 SU, 4-5 ATS) knocked off Marshall 98-61 in their last game, as Ed Davis tossed in 19 points. The Scarlet Knights (9-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) got 28 points from Mike Rosario in their 66-42 win over St. Peter's in their most recent game, and Hamady Ndiaye added 15 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has eight games on tap for Monday, with Atlanta at New Jersey, Carolina at Washington, Detroit at Columbus, Montreal at Ottawa, Boston at Tampa Bay, Calgary at Edmonton, Minnesota at Los Angeles, and Phoenix at San Jose. The 24-13-2 Coyotes are coming off a 3-2 win over Los Angeles on Saturday night, with Keith Yandle scoring the game-winning goal. The 23-8-7 Sharks trounced the Ducks by a score of 5-2 in their last matchup on Saturday night; Patrick Marleau scored twice, and Joe Thornton had three assists that day.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Monday, December 28

      Going to Carolina

Rutgers is off to a surprising 9-2 start, one game better in the loss column than tonight's foe, North Carolina.

However, the Scarlet Knights have a dirty little secret. Besides the fact that their early schedule has been softer than the slush on the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike, the Knights haven't had to merge onto the main road all season.

That's right - 11 total games, 11 home games. Some bean-counter in the travel-expense department must have made out their schedule.

Playing in the friendly confines has its advantages, until you have to venture out on the road to a place as daunting as the Dean Dome.

The Knights have never seen a sight like a Tar Heels' home game. Even with the students on Christmas break it's a happening place.

The Heels, still reeling from road losses to Kentucky and Texas, have lambasted the last two visitors by an average of 38 points.

North Carolina is a 21-point favorite with a total of 149.

      Wounded Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have looked more like a M*A*S*H unit so far this season with as many as seven players sidelined with injuries.

But two of their biggest players (in terms of height, not production) are getting healthy at the same time - centers Andris Biedrins and Ronny Turiaf - giving the Warriors some much-needed help inside the paint. Both are expected to see playing time Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Celtics are being cautious with two of their injured stars - Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Pierce's knee injury isn't serious but is enough to keep him out of action until the new year, and Garnett is expected to return from a head injury on this road trip but in a limited role.

The Celts are 2-3 ATS on no days rest and will be traveling up the coast from a late Sunday game with the Clippers. The underdog is 16-3 in the past 19 meetings between these teams and the Warriors are in that enviable role tonight.

The Celtics are favored by 6 with a total of 212.5.

      Senators' conspiracy campaign

The only thing worse than a coach who privately complains about officiating is one who does so publicly.

Enter Ottawa's Cory Clouston, who has politely but openly cried foul over his team repeatedly coming out on the short end of calls this season.

Indeed, the Senators have gone three entire games without a man-advantage this year and they rank near the bottom of the league in power-play opportunities, but those stats speak more to their play than the officials' whistles.

Look at tonight's opponent, the Montreal Canadiens, who have the least power-play chances in the league and the third-highest shorthanded situations. Yet the Habs are tied for second in power-play conversion rate and rank No. 7 in penalty kills.

Those numbers won't be lost on the refs, who are likely to make Clouston's complaints a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Habs have won four in a row on the road and against the money line while the Senators are have won just two of their last five in the same departments.

Ottawa is -145 with a total of 5.5.

      Notable quotable

''That's what I'm trying to figure out: Where do we go, and still keeping the rest of the guys moving forward? It's kind of a balancing act in trying to figure it all out, and I do not have the magic answer. I wish I did.''

Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman on his decision to give Tracy McGady the weekend off after his repeated complaints about his lack of playing time. The Rockets are expected to give T-Mac even more free time today by releasing him.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- Urban Meyer changed his mind? Whats up with coaches at Florida? It should be noted that Billy Donovan hasn't been back in NCAA tourney since his little indecisive episode three years ago. It'll hurt recruiting.

-- Clemson held off Kentucky 21-13 in the Music City Bowl, ending the hideous seven-game ACC bowl skid against SEC teams.

-- 15 of the 47 active Rams this week weren't on the Rams in Week 1.

-- If I was really rich, I'd have a theater in my house.

-- Is Matt Moore Carolina's quarterback of the future?

-- The week between Christmas and New Year's is my third-favorite of the year, after Championship Week and the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Lot of good stuff going on this week.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

        13) Its not often an NFL team forfeits, but with 5:35 left in third quarter and Colts leading 15-10, they pulled Peyton Manning, then all hell broke loose with 3rd-stringer Painter playing. Jets win game 29-15, putting them in position to make the playoffs six days after their blabbermouth coach said in a press conference that they'd been eliminated. Go figure. And yes, there are similarities between Rex Ryan and Ralph Kramden.

        12) Jets need to beat the Bengals next week; game won't matter to Cincy if the Patriots win in Houston earlier in the day. NFL chose Bengals-Jets as next week's Sunday night telecast.

        11) Not that what I think matters, but Colts earned the right to do as they please with their star players; if they want to sit them, so be it. Focus has to be on winning a championship, not finishing 19-0. Of course, if Jets' win knocked my team out of the playoffs, I might be a little bit steamed.

        10) I think I've seen enough of the Redskins for this season.

        9) This is first time ever Washington didn't score TD in consecutive games against their arch-rival Cowboys. As bad as my Rams are, and they're not good at all, it might be worse to root for the Redskins.

        8) Since 2000, Redskins are 3rd-lowest scoring team in NFL, after Browns and Lions, and that's a category you don't want to be in.

        7) Sebastian Janikowski made a 61-yard FG. In December. In Cleveland.

        6) Kudos to the Browns for winning three straight games and I'm not being sarcastic. Tough for awful teams to string together wins in December.

        5) Tom Brady was 23-26/267 passing yards Sunday. Not bad.

        4) Toss-up between Dolphins/Giants as worst team of the day; both got whacked in must-win home games. At least Miami woke up and got back in its game. Giants gave up 247 rushing yards, had four turnovers. Ugly.

        3) Falcons need a win next week for first-ever back/back winning seasons.

        2) I'm totally convinced the Ravens get hosed by officials; they had two TDs called back by penalties, and its not the first time I've watched them and felt they get the short end of the officiating stick. Of course, if Mason catches the ball in the end zone on first play of fourth quarter (he was so wide open!!!) they might win the game anyway.

        1) Highlight of my day was when Marques Colston fumbled for the Saints, and a fairly attractive woman in a Reggie Bush jersey stood up and yelled at the TV really loudly, "What are you doing, you f---ing IDIOT?!?!?!?" I didn't have the heart to tell her it was OK, the Saints being 13-1 and all. Its good thing she doesn't root for Rams or Lions, lives could have been lost.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia 76ers at Portland Trail Blazers (-7.5, 189)

If you started fading the Blazers when they inserted Juwan Howard into the starting lineup, you’re not a happy camper these days.

Howard, a 16-year veteran, was thrown into the rotation when centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla were lost to season-ending injuries. All of a sudden, the 6-foot-9 power forward, who hadn’t been a regular starter in the league since 2006, is the main pivot on a playoff contending team.

Howard hasn’t disappointed Blazer fans. The club is 2-0 straight up and against the spread since the former Michigan Wolverine joined the starting unit.

“We don’t win this stretch of games if Howard is not doing what he’s been doing,” Portland coach Nate McMillan told The Oregonian.

The Blazers have won six of their last seven games (5-1-1 ATS) with wins over Denver, San Antonio and Dallas most recently.

Can the small-ball philosophy continue to pay out? Don’t count on it. LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy can’t play 40+ minutes every night.

              Pick: Sixers

Washington Wizards at Memphis Grizzlies (-6, 206)

Is there a pro basketball team that dislikes playing together more than the Washington Wizards? Coach Flip Saunders is in just his first season with the team and already he’s shooting fares for help.

"I'll say this, in all my years in coaching -15 years in the NBA and the CBA, college - I have never yelled at a player for taking bad shots in a game - until this year," Saunders told the Washington Post in an interview before Christmas.

"It's a catch-22. You try to give them freedom so they can figure out, and try to give them their confidence as far as where they are at, but if you keep talking to them about what's a good shot and a bad shot, if it doesn't get through, at some point you have to say, 'To hell with that.' "

The Wiz can’t seem to get any type of momentum going. As soon as they string a couple of wins together, they follow it up by getting humbled by the T-Wolves.

The Grizzlies, on the other hand, are playing fantastic hoops right now. They’re on an 8-2 ATS run right now, including outright wins over Denver, Miami and Cleveland.

              Pick: Grizzlies

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (-145, 5.5)

Ottawa backers have to wonder where the goal production is going to be coming from over the next few weeks. The Senators learned on Saturday that their captain and leading scorer Daniel Alfredsson will miss the next four to six weeks because of a separated shoulder.

Alfredsson joins No. 1 center Jason Spezza on the injury report. Spezza has been out the last few weeks and isn’t expected to rejoin the club for at least another month or so because of a knee injury.

“It’s very disappointing,” Sens coach Cory Clouston told the Ottawa Citizen. “It’s compounded when you lose Spezza and (Nick) Foligno, as well, so it’s not just one guy.

“We just need guys to step up. We need guys to pick up those minutes and play hard.”

Seems like a bad time to face a hot team like the Habs.

                          Pick: Under

Minnesota Wild at Los Angeles Kings (-140, 5.5)

The Sens aren’t the only ones with injury woes. The Kings got Ryan Smyth back but lost play-making winger Justin Williams in the same game.

Williams and Smyth were excited to be united on Anze Kopitar’s line but Williams didn’t last more than two shifts before going down with a broken leg off a clean hit by Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski.

“When (Williams) was coming in front of the bench on the stretcher, pulling his hair, he was hurting,” Kings coach Terry Murray told the Los Angeles Times. “He was hurting a lot.”

The Kings ended up losing to the Coyotes but afterwards in the locker room the talk centered on their fallen player.

“We were pretty hyped up and Smitty was happy to get him back,” Kopitar told reporters. “And a thing like that happens. It’s never good.”

Meanwhile, the Wild are in high spirits coming into Monday’s game fresh off two wins in a row.

                          Pick: Minnesota
