    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, December 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Devils take on the Capitals, the Hawks look for a win in Indiana, and the Trojans and Eagles meet in the Emerald Bowl.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are three bowl games on tap for Saturday: Ohio (-3) vs. Marshall in the Little Caesars Bowl, Pittsburgh (-2) vs. North Carolina in the Meineke Bowl, and Boston College vs. Southern Cal (-7) in the Emerald Bowl. The Trojans (8-4 SU, 3-0 ATS) will be looking to cap off a disappointing season with a win over the Eagles (8-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) in the day's late contest. Southern Cal was defeated 21-17 by Arizona in their last matchup, with Matt Barkley throwing for 144 yards.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 10 games on Saturday, including Atlanta (20-8 SU, 20-8 ATS) at Indiana (9-18 SU, 11-16 ATS). The Hawks will be looking to bounce back from a 124-104 loss in Denver on Wednesday night, with Al Horford going for 18 points and 11 rebounds in the losing cause. The Pacers' losing streak went to four games Tuesday night, as they were defeated 103-94 on the road in Boston.

Also on the NBA slate for Saturday: Memphis at Dallas, New Orleans at Chicago, Charlotte at Oklahoma City, Washington at Minnesota, San Antonio at Milwaukee, Philadelphia at Utah, the Lakers at Sacramento, Phoenix at Golden State, and Houston at New Jersey. The Nets (2-27 SU, 8-20-1 ATS) lost their eighth straight game Wednesday, as they were beaten 103-99 by the T-Wolves.

As well, there's one college basketball game on the Saturday schedule, with No. 6 West Virginia at Seton Hall. Six-pack for Saturday

-- Chargers spanked Tennessee 42-17, they've won their last 18 games in December. Would be a fun Super Bowl with San Diego in it.

-- Is it me, or have there been a lot more than usual double digits NFL pointspreads? Gap between 1st and 32nd teams has grown by a lot.

-- Mountain West Conference is already 3-0 in bowl games this year.

-- How would you like to sell season tickets for Met games? What have they done this offseason to inspire one person to buy a season ticket?

-- Jared Jefferies of the Knicks leads the NBA with 24 drawn charges.

-- Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is fifth Tiger head coach who is a graduate of Alabama. That's an odd stat.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on day after Christmas

      13) Gator Bowl sold 77,474 tickets in two hours for West Virginia-Florida State, which is Bobby Bowden's last game as Seminole head coach.

      12) Its pretty sad that I have to go out on Christmas night because I want to watch an NFL game. I'm willing to pay extra for the NFL Network and Sunday Ticket but I can't, because a legal monopoly makes me have to purchase DirecTV in order to get these things. Not sure how this is legal.

      11) Orioles really paid $12M for two years for closer Mike Gonzalez? That wasn't a joke? They must think they're going to have games to save.

      10) Former NBA player Chris Dudley is running for governor of Oregon. If there is a runoff, he better hope foul shooting isn't a tie-breaker.

      9) Texas A&M senior guard Derrick Roland broke tibia and fibula in his leg at Washington Tuesday night; he had a rod and three screws inserted in his leg and didn't fly back to Texas until Friday. Sad end to his career and huge blow to the Aggies-- Roland is one of the team's leaders.

      8) I object to Eldrick Woods being named Athlete of the Decade; its not because of his off-course problems, I just don't think golfers are athletes.

      7) Charlie Sheen spent the better part of Christmas Day in a Colorado jail cell after being arrested on domestic violence allegations. He later posted $8,500 bail and was released. Merry Christmas to you, too. Once again, it might not be that easy being rich and famous.

      6) NY Post hired escort Ashley Dupre as an advice columnist. Next they plan to sign up Bernie Madoff to give financial advice from jail.

      5) A Russian guy will own the Nets soon; a Chinese guy owns 15% of the Cavaliers. The NBA might be more popular outside of this country.

      4) Fans at Friday's Cavalier-Laker game included Sylvester Stallone, Anna Kournikova, Danny DeVito, Snoop Dogg, Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine and game show host Alex Trebek. Jack Nicholson spends Christmas in Aspen every year, so he wasn't in his normal courtside seat.

      3) I'm not crazy about high school sports being nationally televised.

      2) A guy in Florida was exonerated by DNA 35 years after being convicted of a crime; can you imagine spending 35 years in jail for a crime you didn't commit? By Florida law, he gets $50,000 a year for each year of unlawful imprisonment, so they owe him $1.75M, but no way is that a fair trade. You can't put a pricetag on a person's life. Its just a sad situation.

      1) USC looked terrific in Hawai'i this week, dispatching UNLV Friday to win the first Diamond Head shootout; they're very athletic, they defend really well and they have a solid senior point guard. They're not deep, but considering where they were this summer, they're in damn good shape.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Washington Wizards at Minnesota Timberwolves

A nasty knee bruise seems to be the least of Gilbert Arenas’ troubles this holiday season.

The Washington Wizards quirky point guard is the middle of a firearms investigation in which the team says Arenas had weapons in his locker. This is a violation of the NBA’s rules on firearm possession and the league and the franchise is looking into the matter.

Arenas said the only reason the guard brought the guns to the Verizon Center was to keep them away from his children.

"It happened like Dec. 10. Right after my daughter was born," Arenas told ESPN. "I decided I didn't want the guns in my house and around the kids anymore, so I took them to my lockbox at Verizon Center. Then like a week later, I turned them over to team security and told them to hand them over to the police, because I don't want them anymore. I wouldn't have brought them to D.C. had I known the rules. After my daughter was born, I was just like, I don't need these anymore."

Arenas does have a prior weapons charge stemming from an incident in 2003 when he was caught driving with a concealed weapon on a suspended license. He was suspended for the2004-05 season opener after he pled guilty to the chargers.

While a punishment, if any, will likely come later in the week, Arenas’ situation and injury are an extra heaping of distractions while the Wizards try to stay focused after the holiday break.

          Pick: Minnesota

          Philadelphia 76ers at Utah Jazz (-8, 205)

The Sixers better have enjoyed be home for the holidays because starting Saturday, they hit the road for a five-game swing – opening in Utah.

Philadelphia is struggling, winning just twice in its last 10 games. The 76ers’ most recent defeat was a tough loss to the Washington Wizards this Tuesday in which Philly was outscored 33-19 in the fourth quarter, losing 105-98 as a 2-point underdog. The letdown was so hard, the team cancelled practice Wednesday.

"For me, it was an emotional loss," coach Eddie Jordan told the media. "We talked about the fourth quarter, and I wanted to settle down myself, come in and have a terrific day [Thursday], be a little more even-keel."

It’s been a hectic month for the Sixers. December brought a 2-8 record (3-7 ATS), the return of Allen Iverson and left the team losing nine of their last 10 road contests heading into the weekend. That frustration boiled over during practice this week, where thing got a bit “chippy”, according to guard Lou Williams.

"It depends on the mind-set of the guys," Williams told reporters of the upcoming road swing. "I'm sick of losing. I know a couple of other guys who are sick of losing. We got to get everybody on the same page as far as what we want to accomplish. The season isn't in the wash yet. We still can put some games together and make a run."

          Pick: Utah

All the Senators want for Christmas is a big trainer’s room. The one they have now is getting a little crowded.

Ottawa has been plagued with injuries all season and took another knock when captain Daniel Alfredsson suffered a shoulder injury in the team’s 8-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night. The Senators’ staff expects Alfredsson to miss up three weeks.

"[Alfredsson's] a big loss," goalie Pascal Leclaire told the media. "He's definitely our leader and a key player on our team ... but we have some good guys in here. We all have to step it up a little bit."

Alfredsson leads the Senators with 31 points, scoring nine goals and recording 22 assists. He was battling a scoring slump with his most recent goal coming in late November.

Ottawa is still playing without star center Jason Spezza, who will be out of action until early February after injuring his knee last week. Spezza, who has been mired in a funk for most of the season, isn’t expected to undergo surgery.

The Sens have averaged just over two goals per game this month and, outside of Wednesday’s beating, have posted a 3-5-1 over/under mark in their last nine contests.

                  Pick: Under

Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes (-135, 5.5)

The Coyotes are hoping the holiday break didn’t snap their sudden streak of hot play.

Phoenix won back-to-back games heading into the hiatus, taking wins over the Anaheim Ducks and Columbus Blue Jackets this week. The Coyotes are winners in four of their last five heading into Saturday’s showdown with the Kings.

Forward Petr Prucha credits the team’s turnaround to just getting the “lucky” bounces. The right winger has been stuck in a bit of a rut in recent games. He hasn’t lit the lamp since scoring twice against the Toronto Maple Leafs December 16.

"You always think after points like that it's gonna be the break point, but it's how it is," Prucha told reports. "It's hockey, and you can't have a point every game. You just have to keep working hard, and it's gonna come, hopefully."

Phoenix is a solid 14-5 inside Jobing.com Arena this season. It has won eight straight games at home heading into Saturday.

                  Pick: Phoenix -135
