    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, December 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: the Titans take on the Chargers, and the Magic play host to Boston.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL has a Christmas Day game on its schedule, with Tennessee (7-7 SU, 6-8 ATS) hosting San Diego (11-3 SU, 7-7 ATS). The Titans, who are still fighting for their playoff lives, got past Miami 27-24 at home last time out. The Chargers, who have clinched the AFC West division title, slipped past the Bengals 27-24 in their Week 15 matchup. Oddsmakers have the Titans pegged as 3-point home favorites for Friday's game, with the contest's total at 47 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up five games on Christmas Day this year, with Miami at New York, Cleveland at the Lakers, the Clippers at Phoenix, Denver at Portland, and Boston at Orlando. The Celtics and Magic met in Boston back on November 20, with Dwight Howard and company picking up an 83-78 road victory. Howard had nine points to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds in that win, while Vince Carter scored 26 points. Paul Pierce led Boston with 21 points in a losing cause.

As well, college basketball has games in the inaugural Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu on tap for Friday. Teams competing in the event this year: St. Mary's, Northeastern, Southern Cal, Western Michigan, UNLV, Southern Methodist, College of Charleston, and the host team, Hawaii. The first game gets started at 2pm ET, and the last one gets going at 9:30pm ET.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- 14-point underdog SMU crushed Nevada 45-10 for their first win in a bowl in 25 years. This was a terrible game.

-- A's re-signed Justin Duchscherer, which is fair, since they paid him in 2009 for doing absolutely nothing. He's good when he's healthy.

-- Not sure why NBA schedules five games on Christmas, but they do, and all five are on ABC or ESPN.

-- Chargers-Titans from Nashville is on NFL Network at 8. Of course, not all of us get NFL Network, but I ain't beating that dead horse today.

-- USC-UNLV is championship game of Diamond Head Classic from Hawai'i at 9:30 on ESPN2. St Mary's-Hawai'i is on before that.

-- ESPN.com asked USC basketball coach Kevin O'Neill what Christmas movie he liked best. His answer? "Dirty Harry"

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

      13) Will Tennessee Titans become first team to get over .500 after starting the season 0-6?

      12) Anyone know why 10 NBA teams have to play on Christmas Day?

      11) Can MAC teams stop an 0-8 bowl skid?

      10) How will USC play in its bowl game, the first non-BCS bowl for them since 2001? Teams in their situation often play dreadfully in their bowl.

      9) Raiders-Browns are both showing signs of life; which one keeps their momentum going by winning by Lake Erie Sunday?

      8) Bengals travelled to Louisiana Tuesday for Chris Henry's funeral; how will they play this week, a very tough emotional week for them?

      7) Brian Brohm is making his first NFL start at an Atlanta team that has to win its last two games to finish 9-7, which would be first back/back years over .500 in franchise history.

      6) Drew Stanton makes his first NFL start for Lions at Candlestick. Lions have been awful on the road. 49ers have been a pretty good bully.

      5) How long will number 18 play for the Colts?

      4) Steelers-Ravens is best game on Sunday's card; Big Ben ain't tossing for 500 yards this week. Steelers need to defend better and run it a little.

      3) Which of Miami's young CBs is going to cover Andre Johnson?

      2) Do the Redskins have any trick plays in store for the Cowboys?

      1) How will Vikings play at Soldier Field Monday night? Will Peterson get to run the ball? Will Favre change every play? Will Cutler throw more balls to the blue shirts or the white shirts? Big game for Minnesota.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at New York Knicks (-2.5, 199)

All Mike D’Antoni had to do was place Nate Robinson at the end of the bench and New York would start winning games.

It turns out “Kryptonite” was the source siphoning the life out of the Knicks. Robinson hasn’t played since Dec. 1 and New York has gone 7-3 straight up and 6-4 against the spread without him on the floor.

But it’s not D’Antoni’s fast-paced offense that’s receiving credit for the December success. New York has not allowed an opponent to reach the 100-point mark in eight straight games and the last six at home.

"I think we have more of a confidence that we can stop them on the other end," D'Antoni said.

“Our team has really just tried to step up and play better defense, and really in the month of December we’ve done a better job of that after being ineffective in November at getting any kind of stops,” David Lee said.

The Knicks will spread the holiday spirit to fans at Madison Square Garden by donning green jerseys on Friday. New York has won six straight at the Garden and gone 5-1 ATS during that stretch.

The last time the Knicks played on Christmas Day was in 2001 when they beat the Raptors, 102-94, in a game listed as a pick’em.

Heat center Jermaine O’Neal missed practice on Tuesday with a groin injury and only lasted three minutes in Wednesday’s victory over the Jazz before straining his groin. It is doubtful he will be in the lineup versus New York.

Miami has won the last three games in this series, but the Knicks have taken four of the last five in New York. The over has cashed in five straight in this matchup.

The spread for this game opened at 1 in favor of the Knicks but sharp action quickly moved that number to 2.5. It’s time to hop on board with the wiseguys.

                  Pick: Knicks

Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers (N/A)

The last leg of the NBA Christmas Day extravaganza features the Northwest Division-leading Nuggets against the Trail Blazers who have climbed within two games of Denver after winning five of their last six outings.

No line has been set for this game because the playing status of point guards Chauncey Billups and Brandon Roy is uncertain.

Billups has missed Denver’s last three games with the Nuggets going 1-2 straight up and ATS during that timeframe. The four-time All-Star isn’t recovering as fast as he would like.

“When I tried to pick it up and get to a sprint, I wasn’t able to get to a sprint like I wanted to,” said Billups, who has been out with a groin strain. “I was a little frustrated with that.”

Roy missed Wednesday’s game against the Spurs with a sore left shoulder, but the Blazers were able to come away with a 98-94 road victory.

Jerryd Bayless got the first start of his career in Roy’s absence and did not disappoint. The second-year player out of Arizona scored a career-high 31 points while dishing seven dimes.

"I've always had confidence, but I didn't know I was going to do that," Bayless said. "Even with Brandon and with all these injuries – and we need Brandon back – I think we can still win games.”

Nate McMillan’s team has been plagued by injuries this season. Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez and Travis Outlaw were out but the team lost center Joel Pryzbilla on Tuesday to a ruptured patella tendon.

McMillen has found a way to inspire his team to fight through the rash of setbacks.

"You talk about resiliency with a group," McMillan said. "There's no words. I'm so happy for this group."

Portland is 10-4 inside the cozy confines of the Rose Garden this season. The Blazers have won and covered in three straight while the under is 5-0 in the last five games of this series.

                  Pick: Trail Blazers

                    Friday, December 25

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Cavaliers at Lakers
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Los Angeles Lakers (-4, 195)

                    Christmas regulars

The Lakers will play in their 11th straight Christmas Day game on Friday against the Cavs but are just 4-6 in the last 10 games on Christmas.

This year the NBA has put the Lakers against the Cavs in their marquee game of the regular season and it is the matchup that everyone wanted to see in last year’s NBA Finals.

It used to be when former teammates Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal were playing against each that was the big story. But the rivalry between the two has dissolved with O’Neal becoming more of a role player than any type of All-Star.

Friday’s game will be all about Kobe vs. LeBron James, of course that’s not what the players are saying.

"I just think it's more so about the showcase for the fans and the match-ups," Derek Fisher told the Los Angeles Times. "I don't think the individual teams look at it like this big preview-of-what's-to-come kind of thing.

“The fact that there are quality teams and personalities that the fans enjoy seeing and it's just a big focus on basketball that day, I think that's what it's really about."

James is putting up ridiculous numbers and single-handedly leading the Cavaliers, averaging better than 28 points seven rebounds and seven assists per game. He had his second triple double of the season on Wednesday in Cleveland’s overtime win over Sacramento.

Bryant is doing it with a little more help, leading the Lakers to the best record in the NBA. Kobe’s averaging more than 29 points, five rebounds and four assists per game, but he has three other players averaging double figures in points to help take some of the burden off of him, unlike James who has little support around him.

                    James vs. Artest

While the fans will focus on who performs better, James or Bryant, the most important matchup at the Staples Center on Friday will be how Ron Artest defends James. The Lakers brought in Artest in the offseason to take on the role as the defensive stopper and it doesn’t get any tougher than trying to slow down King James.

"I'm looking forward to the next game," Artest told the Los Angeles Times. "I'm not really making that big of a thing out of it. My thing is it's self-explanatory.

“You don't have to do any promoting, because that game is going to be so exciting to everybody -- to all the fans, to the media it's going to be exciting. All we have to do is go out there and actually perform.”

                    Getting beat inside

The Cavs often have had trouble stopping when facing teams with height and quality post players. Take a look at Wednesday’s overtime victory over the Kings as an example.

They allowed 52 points in the paint, the most this season and they also gave the Kings 21 second chance points.

If they think battling the Kings’ Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes is difficult, wait until they face Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol of the Lakers on Christmas Day.

The Cavs will need to sure up their defense in the post if they plan on having any chance of taking down the defending champs.

                    Road Warriors

Nearly midway through this NBA season, no team has been away from home more than the Cleveland Cavaliers. On Friday, the Cavs will play their 18th of their 31 games on the road. This has done little to impact the season of the Cavs who come into tonight’s game just a game and a half out of the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

"It has been tough, but it has been good for us too. We're finding out a lot about who we are, which is good at this point in the year,” coach Mike Brown told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The Cavs are 11-6 on the road this season and play nine of their next 13 on the road.

                    Trends

The under is 7-2 in the Lakers last nine games.

Cavaliers are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.

The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the Cavs and the Lakers and the underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five matchups.
