Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Trail Blazers take on the Mavericks, the Sharks meet the Hawks, and Oregon State and BYU play in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football bowl game on the schedule for Tuesday, with Oregon State at BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Beavers (8-4 SU, 7-4 ATS) fell 37-33 to rival Oregon in their regular season finale last time out. The Cougars (10-2 SU, 5-7 ATS) are coming off a 26-23 win over Utah. The oddsmakers are siding with the Pac-10's Oregon State in this bowl matchup, pegging them as the 3-point favorites. The total for the contest sits at 58.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up nine games on Tuesday, including Portland at Dallas. The Trail Blazers surged to a win over the Heat in their last game on Sunday night, winning by a final score of 102-95 on the road. Brandon Roy led the way with 28 points for Portland in that contest. The Mavericks got a big 102-95 home win over the Cavaliers without Dirk Nowitzki in the lineup in their last game on Sunday. Tim Thomas had 22 points for Dallas in the win, and Jason Terry had 19 points.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Tuesday: Philadelphia at Washington, Detroit at Charlotte, Indiana at Boston, Chicago at New York, Atlanta at Minnesota, Golden State at Memphis, the Clippers at Houston, and Oklahoma City at the Lakers. Kobe Bryant and company held on for a 93-81 road win over the Pistons in their last game on Sunday. Bryant had a team-high 28 points for Los Angeles in that victory, while Andrew Bynum had 16 points and Pau Gasol grabbed 11 rebounds.

Meanwhile, the top matchup on the college hoops schedule on Tuesday has Michigan State at Texas. The Spartans (9-2 SU, 3-7 ATS) knocked off IPFW by a score of 80-58 in their last contest, while the Longhorns (10-0 SU, 7-1 ATS) got past North Carolina 103-90 last time out. The Tar Heels are also back in action on Tuesday, as they host Marshall, while Kansas gets a visit from California, Purdue takes on SIU Edwardsville, and Texas A&M is on the road at Washington.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just three games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Tuesday night, with Anaheim at Colorado, Nashville at Vancouver, and San Jose at Chicago. The Blackhawks had no trouble getting past Detroit in their last game on Sunday night, getting goals from Duncan Keith, Brian Campbell, and Dustin Byfuglien in a 3-0 home victory. Cristobal Huet stopped all 20 Red Wings shots in that contest, helping his team improve to 23-8-3 (16-3-1 at home) in the process.

Trojan Horse Trifecta

Southern Cal, once with dreams of playing for the BCS crown, is now focusing on a less-precious gem - the Dec. 26 Emerald Bowl.

Or at least trying to focus. USC has become a bit of a media circus lately with running back Joe McKnight tooling around campus in his baby's mamma's boss' SUV and former stars Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo taking paycuts to leave USC for the professional ranks.

Now add three more straws to the camel's back. Starting tight end Anthony McCoy and offensive tackle Tyron Smith and key backup defensive tackle Averell Spicer were declared academically ineligible on Monday and will not play in the bowl.

And while the Trojans will be spending Christmas with family and friends in nearby San Francisco, Boston College will be flying cross country for a business trip. Or is it a trap for the Trojans, who are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games?

They will need to regroup from a dismal end of the season to beat the Eagles, who are 7-3 ATS against teams with a winning record this season. USC is a 7.5-point favorite with a total of 44.

House of Pain

The Detroit Pistons have been more beat up than a '69 Buick in recent weeks, but they finally run into another wreck.

The Charlotte Bobcats got a taste of the pain Sunday night against the Knicks when leading scorer Steven Jackson went out with severe back spasms. His status is uncertain for tonight's game, as is forward Gerald Wallace, who has been suffering from severe headaches.

The Pistons are finally starting to get healthy, with guards Ben Gordon and Richard Hamilton questionable for tonight's game and Will Bynum probable. Rodney Stuckey has filled in nicely in their absence.

But the big difference for the Bobcats will be Jackson. They don't have the go-to guys to replace his scoring and Ben Wallace could have a defensive field day with offensive catalyst Boris Diaw.

The Pistons have won eight of their last nine SU against the Bobcats. The line and total are not yet available.

Have Bill Will Travel

Real ducks migrate thousands of miles every winter, but the Anaheim kind are not far behind.

This is the first stop of a four-game road swing for the Ducks who are coming off - get this - a one-game homestand, which was preceded by another four-game tour. It's like they stopped off at home to do laundry and repack for another trip.

Lots of teams have to do it, but these Ducks don't handle homesickness so well, going 2-10 SU in their last 12 road games.

That's a roast-duck dinner waiting to happen for the Avalanche, who are 10-4-1-1 at home this season. Right-winger Marek Svatos (groin) may be back tonight to, if nothing else, light an emotional fire underneath the Avs.

Colorado is -135 with a total of 5.5.

13) Bought a book today called A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, by Donald Miller; hope to finish it Christmas Eve/Christmas Day; last week on Inside the NBA, Ernie Johnson gave his two broadcast partners a copy of the book for Christmas. So far, its a very good read.

12) Happy 50th birthday to Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo, who has shown incredible patience in his first season as an NFL head coach.

11) At one point Monday night, Giants had outgained Redskins 170-3, with Big Blue running 35 plays, Washington 6. Complete ass-kicking.

10) Swagger is this generation's term for confidence.

9) Atlanta Falcons came into the NFL in 1966; they're 7-7 with two games left; unless they win both, their streak of never having consecutive back-to-back winning seasons will continue.

8) Every time I see the Brett Favre/Wrangler commercial, I'm convinced he wore Levi's as a kid. I don't believe anything the guy says.

7) One of the highlights of last weekend was Dick Vitale saying on-air that he had a huge crush on (Rutgers football coach) Greg Schiano's mom when they went to high school together. "She wouldn't give me the time of day."

3) If the Chicago Bears are going to be firing people, shouldn't the guy who made the Cutler trade be first to go? That would be GM Angelo, not head coach Smith. Without a 1st or 2nd-round pick in April, going to be tough for the Bears to be any better next season.

2) In their last eight games, Saints allowed six TDs and a FG on their foes' first drive of the game. They better fix that in the next three weeks.

Golden State Warriors at Memphis Grizzlies (-7.5, 209,5)

When Memphis traded for Zach Randolph this past offseason, most thought the me-first player would be a bad fit on a young team. Randolph is putting up big numbers like always, but the big surprise is the Grizzlies’ record (12-15 straightup, 14-13 ATS).

Z-Bo grabbed an NBA season-high 24 rebounds Sunday in a surprise win over the Nuggets.

"I'm really comfortable," Randolph said. "I think the guys know the way I play, and I know how they play. We're really comfortable together. We're getting more comfortable together every game."

Memphis has won 11 of its last 18 games after starting the season 1-8. The club plays well at home with an 8-5 record and that’s large part in thanks to Randolph. The eight-year pro is averaging 19.1 points per game while hauling in almost 11 rebounds a night.

The Grizzlies should have a big game offensively against the front-court short Warriors on Tuesday night.

Chicago Bulls at New York Knicks (-5.5, 197)

The Knickerbockers keep finding ways to win. They’ve won six of their last eight after opening a dismal 1-9 to start the season.

Head coach Mike D’Antoni and big man David Lee credit their winning ways to the defense. NY has held its opponents under 100 points for seven straight game. The Knicks are 7-3 this season when limiting teams below the century mark.

“It’s something our team has tried to step up and play better defense,” Lee said, “and really in the month of December we’ve done a better job of that after being ineffective in November at getting any kind of stops on anybody.”

The Knicks have slowed their pace and are finding the right way to win.

Information on the best of Tuesday's college basketball games.

Michigan State (+6) won 67-63 at Texas LY; Spartans are 8-2, losing its only road game 89-82 at North Carolina (they also lost to Florida by 3 on neutral court). Longhorns just whacked North Carolina in Dallas last game, 103-90, closest game they've had this year. Big 11 road underdogs are 12-7 vs spread. Big 12 home favorites are 20-12.

UAB is 10-1, winning last nine games, last two vs Cincinnati and South Alabama; Blazers are 5-2 vs spread as a favorite. C-USA home favorites are 19-11 vs spread. Butler snuck past Xavier 69-68 Saturday; they are 4-3 in last seven games, losing by 7 at Georgetown, on neutral court by 1-9 points to Clemson-Minnesota. Bulldogs have three road wins.

Michigan State Spartans at Texas Longhorns

No stage fright

Although the season is barely one month old, both Michigan State (9-2, 3-7 ATS) and Texas (10-0, 6-2 ATS) should be well-prepared for another showdown between two Final Four hopefuls.

“It’s a big game for us,” said Spartan senior Raymar Morgan (10.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg). “It’s going to be on the big stage. That’s why we come here. Play the best and you’ll be the best. Michigan State has built that tradition.”

The Spartans are also building an impressive non-conference resume before they begin for Big Ten action. MSU has already faced Gonzaga (won 75-71), Florida (lost 77-74) and North Carolina (lost 89-82), so Tom Izzo’s squad is certainly battle-tested.

Texas is also no stranger to the spotlight. The Longhorns are coming off a 103-90 victory over North Carolina on Saturday in what was the first basketball game in the new Cowboys Stadium, played in front of 38,052 fans. They also boast wins over Iowa (85-60), Pittsburgh (78-62) and USC (69-50).

“Today just got us ready for what's to come,” explained UT senior Damion James (16.4 ppg, 10.6 rpg) after Texas outgunned the Tar Heels.
Reason to worry?

Michigan State rolled past IPFW 80-58 on Saturday, but the Spartans ran into some trouble in the form of 6-foot-6 swingman Deilvez Yearby. The IPFW senior wreaked havoc on MSU by posting career-highs in points (25) and rebounds (15).

Izzo is concerned that a pair of athletic Longhorns—James, 6-7, and Gary Johnson, 6-6—will do similar damage to the Spartans on Tuesday.

“What scares me about what Yearby did to us is that James and Johnson are a lot more muscular and play a lot like Yearby did,” Izzo noted. “We’re going to have to shore up our defense at that position.”

Dexter on Showtime

The Spartans will also have their hands full with Texas center Dexter Pittman (14.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg). Having enjoyed a solid but unspectacular season through his team’s first nine games, Pittman positively erupted against North Carolina. The senior scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end of the floor.

Pittman stands at 6-10 and 290 pounds. Michigan State has just two players taller than 6-8 on its roster (Garrick Sherman and Anthony Ianni) and the pair is averaging a combined 14.9 minutes per game.

“Our big guys will get their eyes opened when Pittman bows them in the chops one time,” Izzo commented. “If there’s anything they’re not used to, they’re going to have to get used to it quick. We’re going to have to be soldiers down there.”

Texas and Michigan State share one common opponent so far this year; North Carolina. Against the Spartans, UNC enjoyed a +2 rebounding margin while the Longhorns outrebounded the Tar Heels by 20.

Little big men

Whatever MSU lacks in size, it makes up for with stellar and experienced guard play. Junior Kalin Lucas (16.1 ppg, 4.5 apg) leads the Spartans in scoring, has more than twice as many assists as turnovers and is making 42 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Juniors Chris Allen and Durrell Summers both average more than 10 points per contest. Sophomore Korie Lucious is not asked to shoulder much of the scoring load, but he sports a remarkable assist-to-turnover ratio (48 assists, 15 turnovers through 11 games).

“We haven't lost to them since I've been here, and I don't plan to start now,” Lucas said of the Longhorns. “But it'll be a dogfight. And if we start well, we can't get satisfied. We've got to stay on our toes.”

San Jose Sharks at Chicago Blackhawks (-160, 5,5)

The Chicago Blackhawks have been unstoppable lately, winning four straight and six of their last seven. They've been even more dominant at home where they have prevailed in 13 of their last 14 outings.

Chicago’s win over the depleted Red Wings Sunday night allowed them to grab the top spot in the Western Conference. Cristobal Huet made 20 saves in the game en route to his second consecutive shutout.

Huet hasn’t allowed a goal in over 141 minutes of play and he credits his teammates for making his job so much easier.

“I didn't see the puck for the first (13) minutes,” Huet said. “That tells you a little bit about what kind of team we are.”

The San Jose Sharks haven’t been as successful, losing five of their last six. Their offense has struggled in the losses, with each game going under the total.

Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks (-150, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks only have two starts of a crucial eight-game homestand to play before hitting the road for eight contests prior to the Olympic break.

Vancouver has been impressive against the league’s top teams, earning wins against Atlanta, Minnesota, L.A. and Washington. But the Canucks have had trouble against two of the worst teams in the Western Conference, most recently falling 3-1 to the St. Louis Blues under a wave of boos from the home crowd.

Goalie Roberto Luongo is getting frustrated with his club’s inconsistent play.

“We could talk about it until we're blue in the face in the locker room before the game, but talking about it and going out on the ice and executing are two different things,” Luongo said.

Expect the Canucks to redeem themselves tonight against the Nashville Predators.
