    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, December 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Penguins play host to the Devils, the Cavs meet the Suns, and the Giants try to pick up a victory down in Washington.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's the Giants (7-6 SU, 5-7-1 ATS) at Washington (4-9 SU, 6-6-1 ATS) in the Monday Night Football matchup this week. New York's playoff hopes took a hit last week when they were blasted 45-38 at home by the Eagles. Eli Manning went 27-of-38 for 391 yards passing in that loss, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Brandon Jacobs rushed for 60 yards on 15 carries with one score.

Washington picked up a 34-13 win over the Raiders in Oakland last Sunday, as Jason Campbell was good on 16-of-28 pass attempts for 222 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Quinton Ganther ran for 50 yards on the ground on 14 carries in that victory, and scored a pair of TDs. Oddsmakers have the Giants as 3-point road favorites for Monday night, with the total at 43.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up five games on Monday night, with Milwaukee at Indiana, Utah at Orlando, Sacramento at Chicago, the Clippers at San Antonio, and Cleveland at Phoenix. The Suns improved to 18-9 SU, 16-10-1 ATS, and 10-0 at home with a 121-95 pasting of the Wizards in their last game on Saturday night. Amare Stoudemire was good for 23 points and 14 rebounds for Phoenix in that win; Steve Nash had 15 points and 15 assists, and Jason Richardson had 22 points.

As well, the top team in action in college hoops on Monday is Kentucky (11-0 SU, 4-5 ATS), which gets a visit from Drexel (6-5 SU, 6-4 ATS). The Wildcats had no trouble with Austin Peay in their last contest, rolling to a 90-69 win off 21 points from Patrick Patterson. The other ranked team in action on Monday is Kansas State (10-1 SU, 6-2 ATS), which will look to steamroll winless Arkansas Pine Bluff. Kansas State got past Alabama in their Saturday matchup, winning 87-74.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 11 games on the NHL's schedule for Monday, including New Jersey at Pittsburgh. The 25-8-1 Devils and the 25-10-1 Penguins are tied atop the Atlantic Division standings with 51 points heading into their Monday matchup. New Jersey got past the Thrashers 5-4 in Atlanta in their last game on Saturday night, with Dean McAmmond scoring twice. Pittsburgh beat the Sabres 2-1 in a shootout in Buffalo Saturday, with Chris Kunitz scoring for the Pens in regulation.

Also on the ice on Monday: Florida at Philadelphia, the Rangers at Carolina, Montreal at Atlanta, Tampa Bay at the Islanders, Buffalo at Toronto, Boston at Ottawa, Colorado at Minnesota, St. Louis at Edmonton, Columbus at Phoenix, and San Jose at Dallas. The 20-8-7 Sharks took care of the Ducks in their last game on Thursday night, with Joe Thornton scoring twice in a 4-1 home victory. Patrick Marleau and Devin Setoguchi also had San Jose goals in that matchup.

      Long Night on Long Island

A Saturday night in the Big Apple is the ideal way to spend the holidays for many tourists, but not for accidental tourists like the Montreal Canadiens.

Following Saturday night's 3-0 win over the New York Islanders, the Habs' team plane was grounded for the night due to heavy snow. Rather than flying to Atlanta after the game, the team had to spend an extra night in New York before finally landing in Atlanta on Sunday.

The Habs have had a full day to recover, but they had lost five straight before beating the Islanders and may have lost any momentum they had in the snowstorm.

The home team is 7-1 SU in the last eight meetings between these two teams. The Thrashers are -150 with a total of 6.

      Golden goalies

The two teams with the best records in the NHL clash Monday night when the 25-win Devils visit the 25-win Pens. Which one will get to 26 first?

This game should be so good you don't need to put any money on it for excitement, but what fun would that be?

Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has been a brick wall in net lately and the Devils counter without the NHL's new all-time leader in games played, Martin Brodeur.

The Pens have won five in a row and the Devils have won four straight, with each goaltender allowing only eight goals apiece during those streaks.

The Pens are -155, but the best bet might be taking under the total of 5.5 and enjoying two of the best teams an goalies battle it out.

      Notable quotables

''You all did your talking, now let me do mine. I've been in this league 12 years, and I've been through a lot. And these shoulders that I have on my body, you can put the earth on it. So just to let you know, I bounced back. I appreciate it."

New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss, who has been accused of dogging it in recent weeks, after catching five passes for 70 yards and a touchdown in the Pats' 17-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Moss' TD catch was his 10th of the season, tying him with Jerry Rice for the NFL record for 10-TD catch season with nine.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- UConn trailed Central Florida by 5 at half, rallied for lackluster 60-51 win over the Knights in the Nutmeg State Sunday.

-- Florida State stopped Georgia Tech's seven-game winning streak with a 69-59 win in Atlanta Sunday.

-- Mavericks beat Cleveland without Dirk Nowitzki in the lineup.

-- Memphis beat Denver for first time in last nine tries; Grizzlies won 11 of their last 18 games after a 1-8 start.

-- Knicks have quietly won six of their last eight games.

-- Kentucky goes for its 2,000th basketball win Monday night when it hosts Drexel.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday....

        13) We were trying to come up with a list of QBs who left college early and were good pros, and really didn't come up with anyone. Now it could be I'm overlooking some guys.......e-mail me if you can up with someone.

        12) Mike Tomlin made one of the worst coaching gambles ever Sunday; if I hear one person excuse him because the Steelers won, I'll scoff. Deciding on whether strategy is proper or not rarely is decided by whether it works or not. Doing the right thing is important. Tomlin took an uncalled for risk.

This is the scenario: with 3:58 left, Steelers kicked a FG to go up 30-28. Green Bay had scored TDs on its previous two drives, so Steelers try an onside kick, and it doesn't work. Packers scored a TD on a 39-yard drive (they didn't need a first down to be in field goal range) to go up 36-30. Ever hear of a coach up two with 3:58 left try an onside kick? Me either.

        11) So Roethlisberger leads Pittsburgh down the field, winds up with 503 passing yards, and the Steelers' season stays alive with a 37-36 win, one of the best games of the season. Just don't credit coach Tomlin's strategy.

        10) My top 6 NFL QBs: 1) PManning 2) Brady 3) Roethlisberger 4) Brees 5) Rivers and 6) Warner. Eli Manning is the best of the rest.

        9) Buffalo gave up six sacks, had 11 penalties for 124 yards in 17-10 loss to the Patriots. You know their OL was fouled up when Richie Incognito was signed up off waivers and put in the starting lineup.

        8) Is there a way to learn how to play in cold weather? Should Jets have Marc Sanchez stick around after the season to practice throwing in winter weather? Supposedly none of his 16 starts at USC were played in colder than 55 degree temps. He'll need to learn how to play better in the cold, or people are going to lose their jobs, such as the coach and GM.

        7) Middle Tennessee QB Dwight Dasher accounted for 363 yards in total offense as the Blue Raiders beat Southern Miss 42-32 in the New Orleans Bowl; year's first three bowl games all went over the total, with underdog covering two of three.

        6) Worst teams of the day were Bears/Seahawks; Chicago's only TD was scored on a punt return. Seattle was minus-4 in turnovers, started eight of its 11 drives 80+ yards from goal line, losing 24-7 to the 2-12 Bucs.

        5) Cardinals led 17-0 in Detroit midway thru third quarter, then Lions ran back an INT 100 yards for a TD and before you knew it, game was 17-all. Arizona wound up winning, but they look very shaky right about now.

        4) Vikings were outscored 56-24 in last two road games, have allowed 109 points in their last four away games.

        3) Bengals played their hearts out but got beat 27-24 on last play of game out in San Diego; this was one of three games this week (GB @ Pitt, Mia @ Tenn) where both teams averaged over 7 yards per pass attempt.

        2) Joshua Cribbs is on his way to becoming a Hall of Famer; his eight kick returns for TDs are now an NFL record. He single-handedly turned around the Browns-Chiefs game, returning two kickoffs back for TDs. Two words for Todd Haley: SQUIB KICK!!!!

        1) There are seven teams tied for the last Wild Card spot in the AFC; one of them is Tennessee, which was 0-6 at one point this season (now 7-7).

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Indiana Pacers (-2.5, 202.5)

The Bucks are going to have to get better production from their two highest-paid players if they’re going to make the playoffs in 2010.

Two guard Michael Redd is shooting just 38 percent from the field and 27 percent from 3-point land since coming back from injury. Making matters worse, franchise center Andrew Bogut went ice cold in the second half of Saturday’s game against the Kings.

The big pivot is struggling to find any type of chemistry with first-year point guard Brandon Jennings.

Bogut won’t find things any easier on Monday. Pacers center Roy Hibbert is capable of coming up with big defensive efforts like his six-block showing Saturday against the Spurs.

              Pick: Pacers

Utah Jazz at Orlando Magic (-7.5, 203.5)

Macin Gorat must be pissed. The long-time Orlando role player impressed during the club's postseason run last season. Dallas offered the big man a fat contract, but the Magic surprisingly matched the proposal. Now Gorat is the highest paid backup center and playing garbage minutes most nights.

Orlando hoped they could play Gorat next to All-Star Dwight Howard, but the pairing hasn't worked out in coach Stan Van Gundy's eyes.

Gorat isn't the only big man wasting away on the Magic's bench. Power forward Brandon Bass, who was signed to a healthy contract in the offseason, is lucky to get 10 minutes of play every other game.

Van Gundy's rotation pattern could end up hurting him. Howard is playing big minutes and could tire down the stretch. Also, when Howard gets in foul trouble, Gorat and Bass don't play with the same confidence they showed last season.

Could be a nice edge for Utah. The Jazz will try to attack Howard early on with bruising forwards Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap.

              Pick: Jazz

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes (110, 5.5)

Are the Rangers starting to turn a corner? After going 7-15-3 over a 25-game stretch, the Blueshirts have put together back-to-back wins.

Coach John Tortorella is getting the credit for the recent surge after benching defenseman Wade Redden and demoting Chris Drury to the fourth line following a 2-1 loss to the Islanders.

Drury got the message loud and clear. The team captain registered a goal in each of the last two games despite playing minimal minutes with the checking line.

Don’t go crazy buying the Rangers just yet. The club has been outshot 102-72 in its last three games. Goalie Henrik Lunqvist has had to bail out his teammates consistently this season.

Expect a higher scoring game Monday against the ‘Canes.

                          Pick: Over

Columbus Blue Jackets at Phoenix Coyotes (-155, 5.5)

Hockey fans in Columbus haven’t had much to cheer about this season. The Blue Jackets are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings and have just two wins over their last 16 games.

Goalie Steve Mason is going through a sophomore slump and his teammates aren’t giving him much goal support. Columbus has just eight goals over its last five games.

Fans are crying for change even though this team made the playoffs just last season. Whispers are swirling about coach Ken Hitchcock getting the axe, Rick Nash being stripped of the captaincy and maybe even a major trade.

None of those changes will happen before Monday’s game against the Coyotes, but Mason will sit in favor of backup Mathieu Garon. That should be enough for the Jackets to snap their losing streak.

                          Pick: Blue Jackets

The Cavaliers look to bounce back from their loss in Dallas and build on their 24-8 ATS record in their last 32 games following a SU loss. Cleveland is the pick (+2 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Suns favored by only 1. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (+2 1/2). Here are all of today's picks.
