    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, December 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Avalanche play host to the Capitals, the Lakers meet the Bulls, and the Spurs try to wreck the Suns' perfect home record.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Tuesday, with New Jersey at Cleveland, New York at Charlotte, Toronto at Miami, the Lakers at Chicago, Detroit at Houston, Sacramento at Portland, and San Antonio at Phoenix. The Suns (16-8 SU, 14-9-1 ATS) fell 105-99 in Denver in their last game on Saturday, with Steve Nash picking up 28 points and seven assists in that defeat. Amare Stoudemire added 13 points in the matchup. The Suns are a perfect 8-0 (4-3-1 ATS) at home.

The top teams in action in college hoops on Tuesday are Texas (vs. Texas Pan American), Duke (vs. Gardner-Webb), Tennessee (vs. Wyoming), and UNLV (vs. Southern Utah). The Rebels (7-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from a 95-80 loss to Kansas State in their last game on Saturday; Tre'Von Willis picked up 17 points for UNLV in that defeat. The Thunderbirds, who hail from the Summit conference, were routed 84-66 by Weber State in their Saturday outing.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has just six games on the Tuesday schedule, with Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, Calgary at St. Louis, Tampa Bay at Nashville, Los Angeles at Edmonton, Columbus at Minnesota, and Washington at Colorado. The Capitals fell to 20-7-6 on the season with a 6-3 loss to the Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Nicklas Backstrom had two goals in that loss, while Alex Ovechkin picked up a goal and two assists. Third-string goalie Michal Neuvirth stopped 30 of 36 shots.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      No rest for the needy

It's a short week for four NFL teams - two unbeatens biding their time for the playoffs and two scrambling to earn invitations.

For the Indianapolis Colts, who travel to Jacksonville on Thursday, and the New Orleans Saints, who welcome Dallas on Saturday, it's a double-edged sword of a dilemma. Do they try to parlay their 13-0 records into perfect seasons or rest their starters until the real season begins?

Neither team has firmly tipped its hand about its game plan yet, but the risk of injury to players like Peyton Manning and Drew Brees isn't worth the limited rewards now that they have locked up home field throughout the playoffs.

The Cowboys and Jaguars don't have such a luxury, desperately needing to win in order to gain ground in the playoff race. They will throw all their healthy bodies and even some not-so-healthy ones out on the field to win. Even Dallas LB Demarcus Ware, who was carted off Sunday with a sprained neck, may play.

Keep a eye on the Colts and Saints' practices this week for a better indication, but it usually pays to go with the hungry team over the happy one. Jacksonville is listed as a 7-point underdog with a total of 53.5, The Dallas-New Orleans line is still off the boards.

      Firing on all Pistons?

The Detroit Pistons got some good news on Monday when guards Ben Gordon and Will Bynum both returned to practice with sprained ankles.

They are listed as questionable, but the Pistons should reap the rewards even if only one of the two suit up. With Richard Hamilton listed as probable, Detroit should finally get the guard play it has sorely missed.

Meanwhile, the Rockets will be without forward Trevor Ariza, the team's second-leading scorer, who was suspended for throwing a forearm against Toronto on Sunday. Along with the loss of Tracy McGrady, the Rockets may be hurting for offense enough to let the ailing Pistons keep pace. The line has not yet been released for this game.

      Dinged-up Kings

Forward Wayne Simmonds will not skate for the Kings tonight when they travel take on the Edmonton Oilers.

Simmonds, the fourth Kings' forward to sit out with an injury this season, has scored nine goals for L.A. this season before suffering an unspecified lower body injury.

The Kings have won four in a row SU, all by one goal, while the Oilers have rattled off five straight victories, all of them on the road. Edmonton has won five out of the last six meetings with L.A.

Look for the Oilers to take advantage of the short-handed Kings in this one. The Oilers are -145 with a total of 5.5.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- John Lackey signed five-year deal with Boston for $85M, which is further proof that this a great country.

-- Angels have some work to do this winter, having lost Figgins/Lackey, especially with Seattle adding Cliff Lee.

-- Washington Huskies just became a bowl team for next season with the news that QB Jake Locker is returning for his senior year.

-- Carson Palmer's play has been so subpar that the Bengals' owner went to the team's trainers and asked if Palmer's elbow was alright. They told him Palmer is fine. Physically at least.

-- Virginia Tech offered to raise defensive coordinator Bud Foster's pay to $400,000 a year after Georgia tried to pry him away from the Hokies.

-- Looks like Roy Halladay goes to Philly in three-team trade, with the Mariners getting Cliff Lee and Toronto getting three prospects that won't make Blue Jay fans very happy.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

        13) Living here in upstate NY, the Halladay-to-Phillies trade puts a lot of pressure on the Mets to do something to keep up with a Philly squad that is now well positioned longterm to be a contender in the NL East. In other words, WHEN ARE THE METS GOING TO ADD TALENT?!?!?!?!

        12) The Halladay trade isn't about 2010, since Phils traded Cliff Lee, and he's damn good too, but Lee wants a Sabathia-type contract next winter, and Philly doesn't like to give starting pitchers more than 3-year deals, so he had to go. Replacing him with Halladay is a bonanza for the Phils.

        11) Marco Scutaro now makes as much money as Jose Reyes.

        10) There are seven Big 11 teams and seven Big 12 teams in bowls; five of the seven teams in each league are underdogs in their bowls.

        9) Six of seven Pac-10 bowl teams are favored; seven of ten SEC teams are favored to win their bowl game.

        8) If Notre Dame played Cincinnati in a bowl game, Bearcats would be favored; why does Brian Kelly talk like he is leaving a high school team to go coach in the NFL? He'll win in South Bend, because he wins everywhere he coaches, but it ain't going to be simple.

        7) Question of the Day: Jesper Parnevik introduced Elin Nordegren and Eldrick Woods; she was a nanny for Parnevik's kids. Lets just say, for argument's sake, that Mr Woods worked for the Post Office when he met Ms Nordegren, making $50K. Think she still would have married him?

        6) DeMarcus Ware's agent is Pat Dye Jr., son of Auburn's former coach.

        5) Texans, Packers both scored long TDs on their first offensive play of the game Sunday; doesn't happen very much in the NFL.

        4) In their last three games, Buccaneers are 7 for 40 on third down.

        3) Carlee Roethlisberger (sister) starts for Oklahoma's basketball team; she averages 9.1 points and 5.5 rebounds a game for the Sooners.

        2) I'm confused by the Red Sox signing Mike Cameron; would he platoon with Jeremy Hermida? Boston's signing Lackey gives them ammunition to make an offer to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez.

        1) Penn fired its basketball coach Monday after an 0-7 start; how do you fire a coach who has non-scholarship players competing against kids who get scholarships? If Ivy teams are going to act like basketball factories, it might make sense for the league to have a postseason tournament, like all the other D-I conferences.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago Bulls (+9, 193)

There’s ugly and then there’s ugly.

The play of the Bulls this season happens to be of the latter. Chicago has lost 10 of its last 12 games and has covered the spread in just one of its last 10 contests.

The Bulls aren’t defending like they were at the start of the season, but a lack of steady shooting from the perimeter is killing the club’s offensive production.

It was hoped John Salmons would fill the role of 3-point specialist when Ben Gordon left, but the former Sacramento King isn’t living up to expectations.

“Saturday was the first time I actually looked at my stats, my shooting percentages and all that stuff,” Salmons told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Everything is down. I don’t know. I just can’t get it going.”

Expect the Lakers to get up big in the first half and let off the gas pedal in the fourth quarter.

              Pick: Under

Detroit Pistons at Houston Rockets (N/A)

The Pistons are taking full advantage of a soft spot in their schedule, despite a rash of injuries. Detroit is 6-0-1 against the spread over its last seven games and picked up outright wins over Atlanta and Denver along the way.

Coach John Kuester is crediting combo guard Rodney Stuckey with his team’s hot streak.

“This week, he went from two guard to point guard to point guard to two guard,” Kuester told The Detroit News, “and it’s an adjustment at times for a young player.”

Stuckey’s got some help now that Richard Hamilton is back in the lineup. The former All-Star shooting guard missed 21 games because of a sprained ankle but scored 18 points against the Warriors on Saturday in his first game back.

The Rockets may be out of fuel after a disappointing loss Sunday to the Raptors.

              Pick: Pistons

Calgary Flames at St. Louis Blues (100, 5)

Brent Sutter is not happy with his players. The Calgary Flames coach called Friday's loss to the Wild a stinker but he was even more disappointed with his club's performance Sunday against the Avalanche.

"It was a carry over from the other night," Sutter told the Calgary Sun after the 3-2 setback to Colorado. "We played three terrible periods at home the other night and it carried over for two periods here tonight. That tells me a little bit."

The stats tell bettors that Calgary can't score. The Flames have scored just 10 goals in their last five games and the under is 6-0 in their last six.

The Blues don't light the lamp too often either. They're at the bottom of the league in goals scored.

                          Pick: Under

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-200, 6)

If the Flyers thought that changing their bench boss would put an end to their recent problems, they were mistaken. Philadelphia has lost seven of its last eight games and four of five under new head coach Peter Laviolette.

The Flyers’ biggest problem is that they can't recover when they fall behind early. They've got just four come-from-behind victories in their last 30 outings and have scored a pathetic six goals in their last seven losses, including a 4-1 thumping in New Jersey on Saturday.

“We got embarrassed," Laviolette said after Saturday’s game. “It should’ve been a little tough to sleep for everybody. Really. It’s hard to walk out of that game with a fluffy feeling. Everyone should be a little ticked off and upset.

The players are all feeling the pressure and realize that they need to start playing better as a team. But with rumored division in the locker room between the younger guys and the older guys, it’s hard to believe Philadelphia will get things going any time soon.

Expect the Penguins to score early and often against this shaky Flyers team.

                          Pick: Penguins
