    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, December 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mavs get a visit from the Hornets, Georgia Tech meets Chattanooga, and the Cardinals and Niners battle on MNF.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Cardinals (8-4 SU, 8-4 ATS) will be looking to clinch the NFC West division title when they play in San Francisco against the 49ers (5-7 SU, 7-3-2 ATS) on Monday Night Football. Arizona grabbed a 30-17 home win over the Vikings last weekend, with Kurt Warner going 22-of-32 for 285 yards with three TDs. Larry Fitzgerald had 143 yards receiving and a score, and Anquan Boldin had two TDs.

San Francisco saw their playoff hopes take a hit last weekend when they were defeated 20-17 in Seattle. Alex Smith went 27-of-45 for 310 yards passing in that loss, with two touchdown strikes on the day. Frank Gore rushed for just 25 yards on nine carries in the contest. Oddsmakers have the Cardinals pegged as 3.5-point road favorites for the primetime matchup, with the total listed at 44.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are seven games on the NBA schedule for Monday, with Indiana at Orlando, Golden State at Philadelphia, Boston at Memphis, Oklahoma City at Denver, Minnesota at Utah, Washington at the Clippers, and New Orleans at Dallas. The Hornets (10-12 SU, 9-13 ATS) lost 113-96 at home to the Knicks in their last game on Friday, with David West scoring a team-high 20 points. The Mavs (17-7 SU, 13-11 ATS) are coming off a tight 98-97 victory over the Bobcats.

As well, the top team in action in college hoops on Monday is Georgia Tech, which will play on the road against Chattanooga. The Yellow Jackets (6-1 SU, 4-1 ATS) got past Southern Cal 79-53 in their last game back on December 5, with Brian Oliver tossing in 18 points in that contest. The Mocs (5-4 SU, 1-3 ATS) had no trouble with Mississippi Valley State in their last game, winning 82-60. Ricky Taylor was good for 22 points in that victory, and Ty Patterson scored 16 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL then offers up eight games on Monday, with Florida at the Islanders, Atlanta at the Rangers, Ottawa at Toronto, Nashville at Columbus, Phoenix at Detroit, Buffalo at Montreal, Los Angeles at Vancouver, and Philadelphia at Boston. The 14-15-1 Flyers were beaten 4-1 in New Jersey in their last game on Saturday, with Claude Giroux scoring the team's only goal. The 16-9-6 Bruins were knocked off 3-2 in overtime by the Islanders in their Saturday night contest.

      In the Cards

Another bad Monday night game between a playoff contender and team playing out the string? Don't touch that remote just yet.

Yes, the 49ers are out of the playoff picture and have fallen apart from their hot start, but like their coach, Mike Singletary, these guys are no quitters.

In fact, somthing seems to get the 49ers' blood pumping when they see the Cardinals, who need to win to clinch a playoff berth. They have the motivation, but the Niners just might have their number.

Go back to Week 1, when the Niners knocked off the Super Bowl XLIII runners-up in their own back yard. The 49ers defense disrupted Kurt Warner and the passing game all day to the tune of two interceptions and they held the ground game to only 40 yards. Warner is slowed by an injured hip but is expected to play, but could face heavy pressure from the Niners.

San Fran also may have trouble moving the ball behind Alex Smith, especially with wide receiver Isaac Bruce doubtful with an ankle injury. All the more reason to expect a tough, hard-fought slugfest.

Need more? Seven of the last eight meetings between these two division rivals have been decided by a touchdown or less with the Cardinals winning five of those games. And the Niners are 7-1-2 ATS as an underdog this season.

Look on the bright side: You want be flipping channels to QVC before halftime.

The Cardinals are -3.5 with a total of 45.

      Thunder and lightning

This should be an entertaining game to watch with a head-to-head matchup between the Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony and the Thunder's Kevin Durant, both of whom are averaging 32 points per game.

This is a good game to cheer for offensive fireworks on both sides of the floor as the last nine meetings between these two teams dating back to the 2007 season going over the total.

With Nene and Chauncey Billups started to meld well for the Nuggets and Russell Westbrook heating up for the Thunder, sit back and watch the scoreboard light up.

The Nuggets are -10.5 with a total of 197.5.

      Flyers' power outage

The Flyers seem to be afflicated by the same low-scoring disease as the 76ers lately, but they can't even blame it on Allen Iverson.

The Flyers have scored just 12 goals in their last eight outings and half of those came in the lone win during that stretch. Despite their near-.500 record, they are 8-22 ATS on the year and 5-8 SU on the road.

The Bruins on the other hand have won eight of their last 11 games SU and have scored a total of 20 goals in their last four home games. Throw in the Flyers' seven players on the injured list to only one for the Bruins and you have the makings for a healthy blowout.

The Bruins are -150 with a total of 5.5.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- Great college hoop game; Xavier beat Cincinnati 83-79 in double OT, in what is an intense rivalry. There was almost a brawl in first half after an intentional foul, but order was restored. Terrific game.

-- Rhode Island won 80-69 at Boston College, big win for the A-14.

-- Temple upset Villanova, giving Wildcats their first loss.

-- A's let Jack Cust go to make room for Jake Fox, who hopefully will hit for more power. Cust fanned 556 times in three years with A's, leading AL in strikeouts all three seasons.

-- Rangers are thinking twice about trading for Mike Lowell because of concerns about Lowell's thumb.

-- According to espn.com, there are 266 free agents on the baseball free market. Spring training starts in a little more than two months. 29 free agents have already signed, so 295 free agents in one winter. Wow.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.....

        13) Am I the only person who thinks its weird that the Patriots hung a banner in their stadium commemorating their 16-0 regular season? Its like they ordered a banner for their fourth Super Bowl, then when they lost, they still wanted to use it. Its something a lesser franchise should do.

        12) Not sure how to describe it exactly, but lets just say Randy Moss did not put out a yeoman's effort for the Patriots Sunday. One catch for only 16 yards, and he fumbled at the end of that play. Could be the rats might be starting to jump off the ship in Foxboro.

        11) Brandon Marshall of the Broncos caught a ridiculous 21 passes for 200 yards in Denver's 28-16 loss at Indianapolis. Thats an NFL record.

        10) DeSean Jackson now has eight TDs of 50+ yards, tied for most ever in one season. He is tied with Devin Hester and Crazy Legs Hirsch.

        9) Since 1990, 29 of 31 NFL teams that started the season 5-0 made the playoffs. Giants are now in danger of making it 29 of 32. Big Blue hadn't given up a return TD all season; they gave the Eagles two in the first half.

        8) Houston's Matt Schaub was 24-28 for 336 passing yards Sunday.

        In the first half alone.

Seahawks might have been more pathetic than the Rams Sunday, and St Louis lost 47-7. Rams could have lost by 70 had Vince Young not left in second quarter with a leg injury- they couldn't stop anyone.

        7) Raiders are 4-9; in the games that followed the four wins, they were outscored by a combined score of 115-23.

        6) If you're ranking the ten worst QBs to ever start an NFL game, you've got to have JaMarcus Russell on the list.

        5) Saints, Colts both stayed unbeaten; if they ever get to the Super Bowl as 18-0 opponents, it would be the biggest NFL game ever.

        4) The New York Post being the tabloid it is, they looked up a high school girlfriend of Eldrick Woods; she told how she went out with Woods until he broke up with her in a letter. Ironic twist is she wound up marrying a guy with the last name Parr. Go figure.

        3) Chargers have now won their last 16 December games.

        2) Tampa Bay had zero first downs at halftime and trailed 19-0. For the game, they went 0-14 on third down, making them 0-23 on third down in two games against the two New Jersey teams this season.

        1) No idea why Mark Sanchez wasn't in Tampa with the Jets. Wouldn't you want your field general with the team at all times? And since he is a rookie, couldn't he learn from watching a game from the sidelines?

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Dallas Mavericks (-8.5, 193.5)

It’s funny what a contract year can do for a player’s productivity in the NBA. Erick Dampier enjoyed his finest pro season in the final year of a contract back in 2003-04.

Dallas swooped in and signed the big man to a huge seven-year deal. Of course he’s enjoying his finest season since then this year and will be a free agent this summer.

He’s averaging 17 points, 17.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks over the last two games, which has been appreciated by his teammates.

“The big fella has to play, plain and simple,” Jason Terry told The Dallas Morning News after a 13-point win over Miami on Friday. “We got to have Erick Dampier on the court. I don’t care what team we’re playing against – big lineup, little lineup, what have you. He has to be out there.

“He’s having an outstanding year, and whatever we have to do to keep him out there, we have to do.”

The Mavs don’t know what they can get from Josh Howard on a night to night basis, but they can rely on Dampier for rebounding and interior defense, at least for this year.

              Pick: Dallas

Golden State at Philadelphia (+3.5, 210)

Just call Golden State the ''Road'' Warriors. Unfortunately for them, they are showing signs of home sickness.

The Warriors are on the final game of a five-game, seven-day road trip that zigged and zagged its way across the USA, from Oklahoma City to New Jersey to Chicago to Detroit and finally back in Philly.

Looks like a flight itinerary from a discount airline, and the Warriors needed their automatic time-zone changers on their cell phones. It's the kind of trip that can make or break team chemistry, and this one appears to be having the latter affect on Golden State.

Two Warriors went down with injuries Saturday night - center Andris Biedrins (groin) and forward Ronny Turiaf (knee), who are out indefinitely. Sure, it's only 8.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, but they make a total of six Warriors sitting on the sidelines.

Too bad they are playing the Sixers or this one might be a lock. How can you trust a team that's lost 10 straight to cover against any team, even one as road weary as the Warriors?

You can't, but with both teams struggling on offense there is one smart play. The Warriors have gone under the total on all four games on this road trip and the Sixers have gone under in their three previous home games.

Just root for defense, or for a lack of offense.

              Pick: Under 210

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (-140, 6)

Don’t look now but the Maple Leafs, once at the bottom of the league in points, are now 7-3 over their last 10 games.

Toronto’s offense is the catalyst for the turnaround. The Buds have scored 16 goals in their last four games and the over is 5-1 in their last six.

The top line of Phil Kessel, Matt Stajan and Alexei Ponikarovsky has built some nice chemistry. The trio combined for four goals and four assists in Toronto’s 6-3 win over Washington on Saturday.

The Sens have gone 3-1 since snapping a four-game skid. Ottawa backers were ecstatic to see winger Alex Kovalev break out of his scoring slump with a hat trick against the Hurricanes. Before Saturday’s outburst, Kovalev hadn’t slipped one past goalie since Oct. 29.

Kovalev is a streaky player and if he can stay active for the next week or so, Ottawa’s offense should benefit.

                        Pick: Over

Los Angeles Kings at Vancouver Canucks (-180, 5.5)

If you check out the Western Conference standings you’ll see one team at the top that might shock you. The Kings a tied for the most points (45) and have the most wins (21) in the West. That’s a huge improvement for a club that had just 79 points and 34 wins a season ago.

“We don’t want to get too cocky, too ahead of ourselves,” forward Justin Williams told the L.A. Daily News. “We’re playing decent. We don’t think we’ve reach our potential.”

The Kings are coming off two narrow victories and will be playing their fourth game in six nights. Expect a letdown Monday night in Vancouver.

                        Pick: Canucks
