    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, December 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Colts play host to the Broncos, the Saints look for a win in Atlanta, and the Cavaliers seek a victory vs. the Thunder.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Peyton Manning and the Colts take their 12-0 record (8-4 ATS) into their Week 14 matchup with the Broncos early on Sunday afternoon. The Colts knocked off Tennessee 27-17 last week, with Manning going 24-of-37 for 270 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Joseph Addai ran for 79 yards and two scores. The Broncos (8-4 SU, 8-4 ATS) blasted Kansas City 44-13 last weekend, with Kyle Orton throwing two TD strikes. Indy is the 7-point home favorite for Sunday.

The league's other unbeaten team, the Saints (12-0 SU, 8-4 ATS), will play on the road against the Falcons on Sunday. New Orleans slipped past Washington 33-30 in OT last weekend to avoid their first loss of the year. Drew Brees threw for 419 yards and a pair of touchdowns (with one INT) in that win. The Falcons (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) were blasted 34-7 at home by the Eagles last week, and QB Matt Ryan is questionable for Sunday. New Orleans sits as the 10-point favorite.

Also on the NFL's schedule for Sunday afternoon: Seattle at Houston (-6.5), Carolina at New England (-13), Buffalo (-1) at Kansas City, Detroit at Baltimore (-13.5), Cincinnati at Minnesota (-6.5), the Jets (-3) at Tampa Bay, Miami at Jacksonville (-3), Green Bay (-3.5) at Chicago, St. Louis at Tennessee (-13), Washington (-1) at Oakland, and San Diego at Dallas (-3). The Sunday night matchup will then be Philadelphia at the Giants, with New York favored by 1 point.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has just five games on their Sunday schedule, with Houston at Toronto, New Jersey at Atlanta, Memphis at Miami, San Antonio at the Clippers, and Cleveland at Oklahoma City. LeBron James and the Cavaliers picked up a 104-99 home win over the Trail Blazers in their last game on Friday night. James poured in a game-high 33 points for the Cavaliers in that victory, adding seven rebounds and seven assists. Anderson Varejao added 22 points off of the bench.

As well, there are three ranked teams in action around college basketball on Sunday, with No. 19 Cincinnati vs. Xavier, St. Francis (NY) vs. No. 7 Syracuse, and No. 3 Villanova vs. Temple. The ranked Orange and Wildcats are tied atop the Big East standings at 9-0 SU on the season, with Syracuse at 5-1 ATS and Villanova posting a 6-2 ATS mark. The Wildcats beat St. Joseph's 97-89 in their last contest; Scottie Reynolds scored 22 points and Taylor King added 20 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just two games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Sunday, with Tampa Bay at Chicago and Calgary at Colorado. The Flames and Avalanche last met on November 17 in Calgary, with the Avs pulling out a 3-2 road victory. Ryan Wilson, Cody McLeod, and Milan Hejduk all scored for Colorado in that contest, while Craig Anderson made 34 saves. Jarome Iginla and Rene Bourque replied for Calgary, while Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 21 shots.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, December 13

      Missing in action

When NFL players miss a Friday practice, it’s usually a good indication they won’t play on Sunday. This is the case for Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner. Both missed Atlanta’s previous game and both are listed as questionable for Sunday.

If Turner can't go, he will be replaced by Jerious Norwood and Jason Snelling who combined for 53 yards on 22 carries with no touchdowns last week. Ryan will give way to veteran Chris Redman for the second straight week. Redman had a forgettable outing in the loss to the Eagles, completing just over 50 percent of his passes while tossing two interceptions.

Falcons’ receiver Roddy White is also listed as questionable but is expected to play.

The line for this game was postponed at some books until later in the week because of the injuries, but opened at 9.5 in favor of the undefeated Saints and is as high as 10.5 at some shops now. The total is set at 51 and the last four games in this series have gone over.

      Buckeye State shootout

The annual Crosstown Shootout between Cincinnati and Xavier is always a game of epic proportions in the state of Ohio. The Bearcats will try to disrupt the Musketeers with their furious full-court press.

Freshman phenom Lance Stephenson has been upgraded to probable after suffering an eye injury in Cincy’s win over Miami-Ohio on Thursday. Stephenson is tied for the team lead with an 11.6 ppg average and ranks second on the squad with 5.9 rpg.

The underdog has cashed in eight of the last 10 meetings between these programs. The X-Men’s 76-66 victory as 2-point road favorites last year was the first time the chalk had covered since 2001.

Xavier opened as a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 136.5.

      Purple, powerless?

The Vikings could be without dynamic wideout Percy Harvin on Sunday. The rookie did not practice all week because of migraines and has a 50 percent chance of playing. Harvin is second on the team in receptions (48), receiving yards (681) and touchdowns (6), and is Minnesota’s primary kick returner.

Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield could be back on the field for Minnesota. He has missed the last six games with a right foot injury, but said he should be able to play against Cincinnati.

"I think this is the week I finally get back out there and get some action," the Pro Bowl cornerback said. "We'll see how warmups go and hopefully I'm up."

The Vikings are listed as 6.5-point favorites over the Bengals with a total of 43. Minnesota is 1-7 ATS in their last eight December games.

      Hawk a lugee

The worst team in the NBA goes against one of the best in the league when New Jersey visits Atlanta. The Nets aren’t playing as a unit right now and should be double-digit dogs in four of their next five games.

"We're a little divided as a team right now. We got to find a way to pull it together,” said Devin Harris.

Harris left Friday’s game in the third quarter with a finger injury. He is listed as questionable for the game against the Hawks with a sprained left pinky.

Oddsmakers installed Atlanta as 13-point favorites with a total of 198.5. Despite this year’s disparity between the two teams, the Nets have gone 8-2 ATS in the last 10 games of this series and covered in four straight as the underdog.

      Restbrook

Running back Brian Westbrook will miss his fourth straight game due to concussion injuries, but that could be a good thing for Eagles bettors. Philadelphia is 5-1 straight up and 4-2 ATS without Westbrook in the lineup this season.

Philadelphia faces the Giants in a monumental NFC East battle on Sunday. The visiting Eagles are 1-point favorites with a total of 44. The underdog has covered the spread in 10 straight games between these rivals.

      Notable quotable

"Unfortunately, since it is a legal matter, I will not be able to comment further at this time, but my family and I have faith that you will see, I'm not guilty of these charges."

-- Falcons defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux, who is expected to play on Sunday despite being arrested on Thursday night after police found more than an ounce of marijuana in his car during a routine traffic stop.

        Six-pack for Sunday

NFL trends for Sunday's Week 14 games.......

-- Tennessee covered eight of last ten as a double digit favorite.

-- Denver is 2-7 vs spread as a road underdog of 7 or more points.

-- Dolphins covered nine of last 12 as a road underdog.

-- Bears are 4-13-2 vs spread in game following their last 19 wins.

-- Bengals covered their last six games against NFC teams.

-- Tampa Bay covered five of last 14 as an underdog.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.........

        13) These college football awards shows ESPN has had this week are just terrible television; doesn't anybody in charge watch these shows and think to themselves, "Except for the 90 seconds when they announce who won the Heisman Trophy, this is unwatchable"?

        12) Kind of odd that Alabama had never had a Heisman Trophy winner in its storied history, but now they do. Ingram is third straight sophomore to win the Heisman. Not sure what that means, or if it means anything.

        11) Alabama's hoop team took court moments after the Heisman verdict was announced; Tide had a 16-point lead over 5th-ranked Purdue, but lost by 7. Boilermakers are physically tough, if not that physically gifted.

        10) Referee Curtis Shaw tossed a couple of Alabama fans from under the basket late in the game; this is the same official who tossed Rice mascot Sammy the Owl from a home game last season. Guess that makes him the Dirty Harry of basketball officials. He should probably lighten up.

        9) Rough night for middle of pack Big East teams: Iona upset Providence and Loyola Marymount won at Notre Dame, two bad losses. Marquette also lost at Wisconsin, but thats not such a bad loss.

        8) Then there's the Pac-10, which is having a nightmare season. UCLA got crushed by Mississippi State, Washington lost to Georgetown, Oregon got beat at home by St Mary's, Arizona lost at San Diego State and Oregon St lost at Nebraska. The WCC will have more NCAA teams than Pac-10.

        7) UCLA became the 68th and last bowl team when Navy beat Army in their rivalry game; Army finishes 5-7, so UCLA will come east to play in the Eagle Bank Bowl against the Temple Owls.

        6) Its a good day when you turn down $65M; Jason Bay turned down the Red Sox' four-year offer. Word is if someone offers him a fifth year, he'll sign on the dotted line. If you want him that bad, why wouldn't you give him the fifth year? Time for the Mets to step up and give it to him.

        5) Western Carolina 91, Louisville 83-- Catamounts might be best team in Southern Conference, so while very surprising, this score isn't as awful as you might think for the Cardinals. But the way Kentucky is winning right now, Louisville fans aren't going to be a happy group this week.

        4) San Diego State 63, Arizona 46-- Sean Miller's tenure in Tucson is going to start with Wildcats missing out on NCAA's; Pac-10 won't provide the quality wins they would need for an at-large bid. They'll be back, though.

        3) New Mexico made 10-17 from arc, built 18-point lead, then survived in last minute when Texas A&M missed pair of FTs down two points with 0:18 left. Lobos are 10-0 with four wins away from The Pit.

        2) Pretty good eight days for Kentucky, beating North Carolina, UConn and Indiana. They play in spurts, but their postive spurts are awesome.

        1) UTEP gets Louisville transfer Caracter eligible for their Sunday game with New Mexico State; he should help the Miners a lot.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Toronto Raptors (+1.5, 203.5)

No one imagined the Rockets would be 13-9 at this point in the season without Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. Rick Adelman has his team playing with confidence and cohesion behind some starting veterans and a youthful bench.

While Aaron Brooks and Trevor Ariza get most of the attention, reserve Carl Landry has been outstanding in his third NBA season. Landry is the third-leading scorer and rebounder on the team, posting 16.3 ppg and 6.1 rpg.

“He’s got to realize that we need him to be big every game for us,” said Adelman. “When we’re trying to post him up and trying to go to him, he’s got to demand the ball and understand that he has the ability to score against anybody in this league. He is one of our go-to guys.”

On the other side of this matchup, Toronto is a beaten team. The Raps rank 29th in the league on defense (108.8 ppg) and have given up 111 and 117 in their last two outings. To compound matters, point guard Jose Calderon only lasted seven minutes in his return before making a trip back to the hospital.

Chris Bosh is the only player pulling his weight on the team and is not a happy camper.

"We can circle dates on our calendar all we want to, but until we become a better team and, individually, take the challenge a little bit better, we're going to stay where we are,” he said.

The Rockets are 5-1 straight up and ATS in their last six and should add a notch to those win columns against the Raptors.

                Pick: Rockets

Cleveland Cavaliers at Oklahoma City Thunder (+3.5, 191)

The Cavs just don’t appear to be giving it their all right now. Much like the Spurs have coasted to the All-Star break in recent years, Cleveland may be on the same path.

"It is good to play well now, but at the same time we do not want to reach our peak,” said LeBron James. “Closer to playoff time is when we really want to start dominating."

Oklahoma City on the other hand, plays every game like it's Game 7 of the NBA Finals. This team genuinely looks like they are having fun on the court and play hard to the end of every game. Only two of the Thunder’s losses have come by 15 points or more and both of those defeats were against the Lakers and Celtics.

Rolling with the Thunder in this game looks like the right play with the home team going 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings of this series.

                Pick: Thunder

Tampa Bay Lightning at Chicago Blackhawks (-240, 5.5)

Tampa Bay inserted goalie Antero Niittymaki back into the starting role on Friday against Colorado. The Fin did not disappoint, saving 33 of 34 shots, but got in the loss in a 2-1 shootout.

Right winger Steve Downie scored the lone goal for the Lightning, who have averaged 1.6 gpg over their last eight games.

“We’ve been struggling as of late, and on this road trip we wanted to come out strong from the start and put the puck in the net,” Downie said.

One puck in the net isn’t going to produce many wins during this six-game road trip that ends with the Islanders next Monday.

Chicago has played in four overtime games during their last six (winning three), and taken seven of the last 10 contests in this series.

                              Pick: Blackhawks

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (-120, 5.5)

Both of these teams are coming off overtime games on Friday. The Avs won 2-1 in a shootout while the Flames lost 2-1 in the overtime period.

Although goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was charged with the loss, he played an outstanding game stopping 44 of 46 shots.

"It's a shame to waste a performance like that," said assistant coach Dave Lowry. "He gave us every opportunity to win."

"He's probably been playing his best hockey in the last month and a half than maybe I've ever seen him play," added defenseman Robyn Regehr.

Kiprusoff hasn’t allowed more than two goals in his last 10 games including two shutouts during that span. He ranks 5th in the league this season with a 2.15 goals against average.

Colorado has surrendered an average of 1.6 gpg over its last five and the under has gone 11-4 in the last 15 meetings of this series.

                              Pick: Under
