    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, December 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Army takes on Navy on the gridiron, the Thrashers host the Habs, and the Celtics try to keep their streak alive in Chicago.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's a single college football game on the schedule for Saturday afternoon, with Army (5-6 SU, 3-8 ATS) taking on Navy (8-4 SU, 4-6-2 ATS) at Lincoln Financial Field. The Black Knights are coming off a 17-13 win over North Texas, and they'll get an invite to the EagleBank Bowl if they can pick up a victory on Saturday. The Midshipmen fell to Hawaii 24-17 last time out, but they're locked in to the Texas Bowl on December 31. Navy is set as the 14-point fave for Saturday.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up eight games on Saturday, with Indiana at Washington, Golden State at Detroit, Charlotte at Dallas, Portland at Milwaukee, Phoenix at Denver, the Lakers at Utah, Minnesota at Sacramento, and Boston at Chicago. The Celtics have won nine straight games heading into their matchup with the Bulls, and they sit at 18-4 overall and 10-1 on the road. Boston knocked off the Wizards 104-102 in Washington on Thursday night, with Rajon Rondo tossing in 21 points.

As well, there are two matchups between ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Saturday, with No. 13 Ohio State vs. No. 22 Butler, and No. 15 Georgetown vs. No. 17 Washington. The Hoyas (7-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) remained unbeaten on the season with a 72-65 win over Butler on Tuesday night. Greg Monroe picked up 24 points for Georgetown in that contest. The Huskies (6-1 SU, 1-6 ATS) slipped past CSU Northridge by a final score of 88-76 last time out.

Other college hoops games involving ranked teams on Saturday: No. 4 Kentucky vs. Indiana, McNeese State vs. No. 25 Mississippi, La Salle vs. No. 1 Kansas, Texas State vs. No. 2 Texas, Marquette vs. No. 20 Wisconsin, No. 16 Texas A&M vs. New Mexico, Kansas State vs. No. 18 UNLV, Davidson vs. No. 21 Gonzaga, Coppin State vs. No. 6 West Virginia, Presbyterian vs. No. 11 North Carolina, and No. 5 Purdue vs. Alabama. The Boilers are 8-0 SU and 4-3-1 ATS.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the National Hockey League offers up a dozen games on Saturday, including Montreal at Atlanta. The 15-15-2 Canadiens were edged 3-2 by the Penguins in their last game on Thursday night. Matt D'Agostini and Roman Hamrlik had the goals for Montreal in that loss, while Carey Price stopped 38 of 41 shots. The 15-11-3 Thrashers were doubled up 4-2 in Vancouver on Thursday night, with Nik Antropov and Colby Armstrong both picking up markers in the loss.

Also on the ice on Saturday: Anaheim at Columbus, Washington at Toronto, Carolina at Ottawa, Buffalo at the Rangers, Boston at the Islanders, Philadelphia at New Jersey, Florida at Pittsburgh, San Jose at Phoenix, Detroit at Nashville, Dallas at Los Angeles, and Minnesota at Vancouver. The 17-14-0 Canucks got a hat trick from Daniel Sedin in their win over the Thrashers on Thursday, while Mason Raymond picked up his 10th of the year. Roberto Luongo made 22 saves.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Saturday, December 12

      Cutting the cheese

All eyes in America’s Dairyland will be on the hardcourt Saturday to watch the 92-year-old annual rivalry between Marquette and Wisconsin. The Badgers already lost a sliver of state bragging rights with an 88-84 overtime loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay on Wednesday.

Wisky allowed the Phoenix to hit 9-of-18 from downtown during the loss and is letting opponents score at a 31.8 percentage from 3-point land in eight games this season. Marquette is connecting at nearly a 40 percent clip from 3-point range this year with sharpshooter Darius Johnson-Odom banging in 55 percent (21-38) of his three balls.

The Golden Eagles emerged as victors in last season’s bout, but the Badgers covered as 5.5-point dogs. The underdog in this series has cashed in three straight years and is 8-2 ATS over the last decade.

Oddsmakers have installed Wisconsin as 5.5-point favorites with a total of 133.

      Hurricane of injuries

Carolina’s 7-18-2-3 record can somewhat be attributed to a barrage of injuries the team has endured this season. The Hurricanes No. 1 goalie, Cam Ward, returned from a 13-game hiatus on Wednesday and made 27 saves on 30 shots in a 4-2 losing effort. But as soon as they come off injured reserve, they are put right back on.

Canes forwards Eric Cole and Chad LaRose will both be placed on IR for the next 2-4 weeks. The two have combined to score 14 points this season while Cole had a hat trick in a 5-3 win over Vancouver last week.

Carolina earned its first road win of the season last week and will aim for its second at Ottawa. The Senators could get a boost defensively if Alexandre Picard returns to action, as speculated, after missing a week with an upper-body injury. Ottawa is giving up an average of 3.7 gpg over its last seven outings.

The Canes have lost six of their last eight and are in a back-to-back situation on Saturday where they are 0-5 on the season. The Senators opened as a -200 favorite with a total of 5.5.

      Jazz-ercise

Utah will play the Lakers for the second time in four days and could be without four members of the team. Andrei Kirilenko has missed five of the team’s last six games with a lower back strain while other reserves Kyrylo Fesenko, Kyle Korver and Ronnie Price all were absent in Thursday’s home win over the Magic.

Fesenko is battling a stomach virus that could allow him to return on Saturday while Korver has missed the entire season and Price has been absent in 15 straight.

The Jazz can only hope for a better outcome against the defending champs on their home floor where they hold a 10-3 record (9-4 ATS). Utah was held to 25 second half points (six in fourth quarter) in the 101-77 blowout at Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The under has cashed in four straight in this series while the home team is 16-7-1 ATS during the last 24 meetings.

The Lakers opened as a 2-point favorite with a total of 202.5.

      Au revoir, Qvale

The Montana Grizzlies will likely be without center Brian Qvale on Saturday against Colorado State after he left campus earlier this week to tend to personal matters. The 6-11 junior has started in all eight games he’s played, is averaging 11.4 ppg and is the team’s leading rebounder (8.6 rpg) and shot-blocker (14 total).

Montana did not have Qvale in the lineup on Thursday against Loyola Marymount and won 82-73 as a 1-point favorite. Forward Derek Selvig got the start in Qvale’s absence and contributed 18 points and 10 boards.

The Grizz are 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games. Montana is a 4-point underdog to the 6-3 Rams.

      Notable quotable

“He went for the money. I'm fairly disgusted with the situation, that they let it last this long. I feel there was a little lying in the thing. I feel like he'd known this the whole time. I kind of had a gut feeling he was going to stay just because he told me he was going to be here."

-- Cincinnati Bearcats all-purpose wide receiver Mardy Gilyard on his former head coach, Brian Kelly, leaving for Notre Dame.

        Six-pack for Saturday

I went to my first high school hoop game in two years Friday; here are some observations from tonight.......

-- One of the referees worked my games when I played 8th grade ball in 1973. I'm not kidding-- he's still refereeing. He looks better than I do.

-- One team had three coaches on the bench and none of them had paper or pen; how do they know what happened if no one keeps stats?

-- It bothers me when kids play a zone defense and don't have hands up; basketball isn't a standstill game. Take the other team's vision away.

-- There is something delightfully hokey about small school basketball, like when cheerleaders sing the alma mater before the third quarter.

-- There are few things more painful to watch then a pre-Christmas JV game; the kids haven't had enough practices to make their games sharp.

-- You can handicap high school ball by the size of the fanbases; when the visiting team doesn't have many fans, chances are they're not good, with inner city teams the exception to that rule.

Saturday's List of 13: Kicking around some ideas on TigerGate

        13) During the last two weeks, I was sympathetic to Eldrick Woods, but not now; the Damage Control Police have stepped in to try and rehabilitate whatever is left of his image, so he will still be useful to his sponsors down the road. Whatever follows promises to be nauseating. Trust me on this.

        12) At some point in the future, it would now make sense for a repentent Woods and his wife to hold a joint press conference saying how sorry he is and how hard they've worked to make their marriage work. Horse hockey.

        11) If Elin Nordegren had an ounce of self respect, she'd be in Sweden by now, figuring out where to invest her $300M and meeting with lawyers on how much child support her two kids will need. She has been disrespected beyond belief, more than once; how can she possibly stay with this guy?

        10) How long with Eldrick stay out? He probably wasn't going to play in 2010 until February 18 anyway; the Masters is only six or seven weeks after that-- why make the "indefinite leave" statement if he is going to be at Augusta National in April? My theory is he is sitting out all of 2010.

        10) But why? Does he not want to face the media that much? Kobe Bryant was an accused rapist, charged with a violent felony, but he didn't miss a game with the Lakers; how does Woods suspend himself for cheating on his wife? Is there more we don't know about?

        9) Say Eldrick sits out all of 2010; what does Steve Williams do? Does he still get paid, or is he a free agent? If he caddies for someone else, is he back on Team Tiger when Eldrick returns, or is he scapegoat for this disaster?

        8) Woods missed the second half of 2008 with his knee injury, so if he is sitting out all of 2010, that would mean over the last 2.5 years, he's played one year of golf. Could he return in 2011 and still be a dominant force?

        7) A friend of mine wanted Eldrick to go the other way; divorce Elin and become a bad guy, start dating Jenna Jameson and win every tournament by ten strokes, then wave defiantly at the crowd as he stalked off with a trophy and another million bucks. How would he have been greeted if that happened? Sadly, we'll never know.

        6) How many sponsors stick with Woods? Nike issued a strong statement of support, but Accenture pulled him off their website, and AT&T was at best lukewarm with their statement. What good is a non-golfing Woods as a commercial spokesman? Or worse yet, what good is a cheating Woods?

        5) ESPN.com's Rick Reilly wrote a piece earlier this week encouraging this exact approach and he was roundly mocked for it; some other writers even suggested Reilly be fired for writing such a ridiculous piece. It happened though-- either Reilly is brilliant or somebody gave him a scoop.

        4) In modern America, the National Enquirer and TMZ are legitimate news outlets, real journalists that are breaking stories. Thats also a little weird.

        3) Hillary Clinton stayed with a cheating Bill because she had grand plans of herself as the first female President; what possible motivation does Mrs Tiger have for staying with a guy who had sex with a Perkins waitress in a church parking lot? While a National Enquirer photog filmed it?????

        2) By the way, I'm guessing Tim Finchem had a bad day Friday; he is the Commissioner of the PGA Tour and this is his worst nightmare.

        1) If you think a late Friday announcement is a coincidence, think again; in the Spin Police world, the people in charge of this are hoping Brian Kelly and Week 14 of the NFL and a full weekend of sports and Christmas stuff will help make this old news by Monday. Good luck with that one.

                Saturday's game

Favorite is 8-1-1 vs spread in last ten Army-Navy games, with Middies winning last seven, last two by combined score of 72-3. 12 points is as close as Cadets came during 7-game skid. Army needs win in this rivalry game to go bowling; Navy just came back from an upset loss at Hawai'i; their bowl game is already set (vs Missouri in Texas Bowl January 31), so motivation edge goes to Cadets, who are 5-6, with best win against Vanderbilt. Army is 3-5 as a dog this year. Navy is 2-4-1 vs spread as a favorite, but 0-3 in last three chances.

Game of the day: Army vs Navy
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Army vs Navy

Let's admit it. With no midweek action, we are all suffering from college football withdrawal. Thankfully there's one last regular season game left in the annual rivalry game between Army (5-6, 4-7 against the spread) and Navy (8-4, 7-5 ATS) CBS 2:30 p.m. EST.

                    The Line and Weather

The line for the game opened at 14 and it has seen little or no movement as of Friday.

This marks the sixth time in the last seven years that Navy has been a double digit favorite in this series. The Midshipmen have also covered the spread seven times in the last 10 versus Army.

It should be noted that the last four games Navy has been favored, it has failed to cover the spread.

Army was just 2-7 ATS during its first nine games, but has covered the spread in its last two. The last time the Knights covered against Navy was in 2006 when they lost 26-14 as 19-point underdogs.

The total sits at 41 at most sportsbooks and it has seen little movement. Both teams have a combined 8-15 record on totals this season.

All signs point to the under with Army averaging 16.5 points and going 3-8 on the over/under. The last three Navy games have also gone under, but bettors should keep in mind the Midshipmen have only dealt with a number this low one other time this year. The game went 10 points over the total in a 27-24 loss to Temple.

The 110th meeting between Army and Navy will be played on turf at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. It will be a sunny day but a low of 29 is expected. Winds will be going west (sideline to sideline) at approximately 13 mph.

                    Naval Blockade

Respect should be given to both academies and the traditions associated with this contest, but as for the actual game, it’s probably been the most boring rivalry in college football. Navy currently holds a seven-game winning streak and none of those games have been competitive.

In the two most recent games, the Army Black Knights failed to score a single touchdown, with the Midshipmen winning 34-0 last year and 38-3 in 2007.

The two programs have been headed in different directions. Navy about to play in its seventh straight bowl game and while Army has a losing season streak that dates back to 1996.

                    Army Turnaround

Things look a little differently this time around for Army. For the first time in 13 years, the Black Knights have five wins and they will head into this game with momentum from two dramatic fourth-quarter wins against VMI and North Texas.

The comeback win against North Texas was highlighted by a blocked field goal and a 55-yard run on a broken play by freshman QB Trent Steelman. Those two key plays set up the eventual game winning touchdown. An upset win over Navy would also guarantee a spot in the Eagle Bank Bowl.

                    Triple Option vs. Triple Option

All year long we've heard about spread offenses and how to stop them so football fans may find some relief in the run heavy focus of both teams. Army ranks 14th in rushing yards averaging 212.1 yards per game, while Navy ranks third and is averaging 279.7. It’s no shocker that these teams rank 119th and 120th in passing yards.

If Army is to keep this game close they'll have to stop junior QB Ricky Dobbs from making big plays. Dobbs has 27 total TDs this year and he's rushed for 100 plus yards five times. A key battle will be the Navy's tackles against Army defensive end Josh McNary, who is fourth in the nation in sacks with 12.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls (+10, 187.5)

Remember when NBA fans were being treated to one of the most entertaining playoff series between the Bulls and Celtics that witnessed four of the seven games being decided in overtime? What a series that was and how far the Bulls have fallen since then.

After starting the season 6-4, Chicago has dropped nine of their last 10 and coach Vinny Del Negro is on the piping-hot seat.

"We definitely have each other's back," said John Salmons, who isn't losing faith in his coach. "That's part of being a team. Coaches got to stay with players and players got to stay with coaches. That's what we're doing."

The Bulls have been outscored by a margin of 18.0 ppg during their nine recent defeats. Chicago was two-point losers to the Nets on Tuesday, but sandwiched that performance between 32 and 35-point blowouts to the Hawks and Raptors.

"We're just not playing hard, not rebounding the ball as a team and playing our regular game," Derrick Rose said. “Either you want it or you don't. Hustle, if you want it. Rebound. We're just not playing hard."

Boston has covered in three straight in this series and the over is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.

                        Pick: Celtics

Minnesota Timberwolves at Sacramento Kings (-7.5, 206)

After missing the first 18 games of the season with a broken left hand, Timberwolves forward Kevin Love is back where he belongs – on the floor and in the starting lineup.

Love eased his way back into game-playing shape, logging less than 30 minutes of play in each of his first four games. He is scheduled to get his first start of the season on Saturday against the Lakers and is averaging 14.8 ppg and 9.8 rpg this year.

"[Love] is a terrific player,” said Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan. “He knows how to play basketball. He passes the ball, he sets screens, he does whatever it takes to try to play the game. Those guys play for years and years in this league.''

Since Love has been back, a slower pace of play has ensued with him and the other T-Wolves big man, Al Jefferson, paired together on the court. Minnesota has played to the under in three out of four games since Love’s return.

These teams have been two of the most profitable in the Association over the last few weeks. Minny has gone 6-0 ATS in its last six games while the Kings are 8-2 ATS in their last 10.

                        Pick: Under

Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators (-140, 5.5)

Few teams have been hit harder by injuries this season than the Red Wings and you can add another name to their growing list of wounded: Daniel Cleary.

Cleary may not be the most prominent name for casual hockey fans, but the separated shoulder he suffered against the Blues Wednesday night is going to hurt more than just him. The rugged winger has been one of the few bright spots for Detroit amid its recent struggles and he scored the game winner in the club’s most recent win, a 3-1 victory over the Rangers.

Detroit is running out of guys who don’t mind mucking in the corners and the way the Wings are scoring lately, they could use some gritty goals. Detroit has been shut out three times in its last nine games heading into Friday night’s contest against Anaheim and has won just three games during that span.

                              Pick: Nashville

Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils (-150, 5.5)

The Flyers are 1-3 since bringing Peter Lavoilette on board showing that they shouldn’t expect any instant miracles.

One thing that definitely hasn’t changed in the four games is an inconsistent offense. Philly has nine goals under its new coach but six of those came in one game against the Islanders. What might change, however, is an inconsistent defensive effort.

Lavoilette runs a disciplined system and that holds everyone accountable. That means he’ll be expecting tougher play from the forwards in the Flyers’ own end, especially with No. 1 goalie Ray Emery out until January.

After the 6-2 win over the Isles, Lavoilette put his club through a tough practice with plenty of skating because the two goals against came on power plays that resulted from unnecessary penalties.

                              Pick: under
