  • NHL Plays....

    Hey gang,

In both of these games, my gut is telling me otherwise, but in a strictly handicapping mindset, these are our plays:

The Sharks try to end an 8 game home winless streak tonight against the NY Rangers. San Jose is 0-3-4-1 this season and will tie the 9 game home losing streak they set back in 1992. They are the only team in the NHL without a home win, and that can largely be attributed to the fact that they lead the NHL in ties with 7. In 4 of their games at home, they scored a go-ahead goal in the third only to give up goal with 6 minutes or less in all 4 of them.
As far as the Rangers are concerned, they need a game like this against the Sharks. The odds say they should win…or at least tie tonight, considering that their top goal scorer is 136 year-old Mark Messier. The Rangers will also be without C Eric Lindros who was placed on the IR with a scratched cornea and #1 goalie Mike Dunham who has a strained groin. That leaves Jussi Markkanen to get the start in the net with backup Daniel Blackburn on the IR as well. Markkanen posts a save-percentage of 86.1%
In all road games this season, the Rangers are just 1-4-1 SU and 2-4 ATS. In those same games, the Rangers are being outscored by an average of 4.0 to 2.2 goals per game.
For the Sharks, G Evgeni Nabokov has allowed 4 goals in each of his last 2 starts.
    Some key trends:

NY: 1-5 ATS after playing as a road dog this season
1-5 ATS after playing a road game this season
4-2 ATS at San Jose since 1996
2-0 ATS at SJ over the last 3 seasons

SJ: 6-17 ATS after tying their previous game
1-5 ATS in home games when playing their 2nd game in 5 days ( We don’t put too much stock into this trend considering that, this season, teams coming off 3 or more days rest are winning 62.8% of their games)

With an injured team and an aging legend being the leading goal scorer, we think that the Rangers are a bit overrated in this situation. Everyone knows how our streaks theory has abandoned us thus far, but the Sharks are playing pretty well as of late. We like the ML at +125 for SJ.

    San Jose 5*

    Philadelphia Flyers @ Carolina Hurricanes

G Jeff Hackett of Philly is just sick. The guy posts a 8-2-3 record in his last 13 against Carolina and overall, he has a 5-2-2 record with a 1.85 GAA. The Flyers are coming into this game with a 7 game win streak. It is games just like these that look like locks (we don’t condone the use of the word “lock” by the way) because of the sheer dominance one team seems to have over another, only for us bettors to find ourselves with our face in our hands at the end of the night. Either way, we’ll take the ML again here .

    Philadelphia Flyers 5*

    Also like Toronto 3*

    Edmonton 3*

    Good Luck,

    The Ham mer
