    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, December 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Canucks look for a win in Nashville, Butler and Georgetown battle at MSG, and the Mavericks play host to the Suns.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are eight games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, including Phoenix at Dallas. The Mavericks fell to 14-7 SU and 12-9 ATS on the season with a 80-75 home loss to Atlanta on Saturday night. Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs' offense with a game-high 32 points in that defeat, while Jason Terry added 17 points and Erick Dampier picked up 12 rebounds. Dallas is only 4-5 ATS at home this year.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Tuesday: Minnesota at Toronto, Denver at Charlotte, Sacramento at New Orleans, New Jersey at Chicago, Cleveland at Memphis, Orlando at the Clippers, and Milwaukee at Boston. The Celtics (16-4 SU, 10-10 ATS) won their seventh straight game last time out, beating the Thunder on the road by a score of 105-87. Kevin Garnett had a team-high 23 points for Boston in the victory, while Paul Pierce was good for 21 points that day.

Over on the college hoops schedule the big matchup for Tuesday is Butler vs. Georgetown, with the teams hitting the hardwood at Madison Square Garden. The Bulldogs (6-2 SU, 3-4-1 ATS) handily beat Valparaiso 84-67 on Saturday, with Gordon Hayward scoring 18 points and Matt Howard adding 16 points and five rebounds. The Hoyas (6-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) knocked off American 73-46 on Saturday, with Chris Wright and Henry Sims both tossing in 12 points in that win.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are four games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Tuesday, with the Islanders at Philadelphia, Montreal at Ottawa, Dallas at Anaheim, and Vancouver at Nashville. The 16-13-0 Canucks fell 5-3 in Carolina on Saturday, with Henrik Sedin picking up a pair of assists and Andrew Raycroft making 23 saves. The 16-11-2 Predators lost 5-3 at home to Minnesota on Saturday, with Dan Ellis getting pulled after allowing four goals on 28 Wild shots.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Raptors' revival

Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can start rising to the top.

That appears to be the case with the Toronto Raptors, who couldn't sink much lower than last Wednesday's 146-115 loss at Atlanta.

Chris Bosh was held to a career-low two points and blasted his teammates' performance. The in-fighting looked like a recipe for disaster on the opening game of the road trip. But something funny happened on the flight from Atlanta to Washington. The Raptors began playing team defense, Bosh tallied a team-high 31 points and 16 rebounds and Hedo Turkoglu hit a late basket in overtime to give the Raptors a 109-107 overtime victory.

The next night in Chicago, the Raptors ripped the Bulls 110-78, holding them to almost half the total Toronto allowed the Hawks.

It was the second straight road game in which they held their opponent to under 100 in regulation after allowing 12 straight opponents score in triple-figures, and they went 2-0 against the spread after a streak of 0-5 ATS.

It's as if the Raptors (9-13) left Toronto as a group of individuals and returned as a team.

Now they face the Timberwolves (3-17), who are winless in their last six SU and 1-5 ATS in that span. Minnesota has lost 10 in a row to Toronto. The Raptors are 8-point favorites with a total of 212.

      Shooting the Bulls

Chicago has been embarrassed in its last two outings - a 110-78 home loss to the Raptors on Saturday, when Toronto's Jarrett Jack tied has shoelaces as he dribbled off the final seconds, and a more justifiable 101-87 loss at Cleveland on Friday, when LeBron James showed off his victory dance steps late.

The Bulls haven't broken the 100-point barrier since Nov. 17 and they are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight games and 1-5 against the over.

Now they get a crack at the NBA's version of the Harlem Globetrotters' former nemesis, the Washington Senators. The New Jersey Nets finally won their first game under new head coach Kiki Vandeweghe but are similarly bad against the spread (2-8 ATS in their last 10).

Surely the Bulls have enough pride to rip the Nets, or do they? Chicago is a 7-point favorite with a total of 192.

      Magic show on the road

Orlando is looking to win a franchise-record eighth straight road game tonight against the L.A. Clippers. The Clips have lost their last five straight up against the Magic but are 4-1 SU in their last five home games. The Magic are 12-8 ATS this season while the Clips are just the opposite. Orlando is -7 with a total of 194.

      Isle betcha

Tonight's Islanders-Flyers matchup is a meeting of .500 teams, at least to Joe Fan. But for bettors there's a big difference between these two so-so squads. The Islanders are an impressive 22-7 ATS on the season while the Flyers are 7-19 ATS, but Philly has won 10 in a row SU against the Isles. The Flyers are 1-7 in their last eight while the Isles are 3-3.

Philly is a -175 fave with a total of 5.5.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- West Virginia won its last four bowl games; average total in those four games was 70.8.

-- Texas won its last five bowl games, with four of the five wins by three or less points.

-- Underdog is 20-5-1 vs spread in ACC's last 26 bowl games.

-- Since 2003, SEC teams are 13-4 vs spread as bowl underdogs.

-- SEC won its last seven bowls against the ACC; since 1999, they are 13-3 SU against ACC squads.

-- Over last three years, SEC teams are 19-7 SU in bowls. Big 11 clubs 6-17. Over last two seasons, Pac-10 teams are 9-1.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Quick thoughts on the bowl matchups....

        13) Instead of giving TV attractive games to broadcast, all BCS does is protect teams from fatcat leagues. Does anyone doubt that TCU would crush Iowa? Neither does Iowa, which is why they're not playing them.

        12) Ga Tech-Boise and TCU-Iowa would be much better TV matchups, but since Boise beat Oklahoma couple years back, the big boys aren't interested in being embarrassed by non-BCS programs. Bad system.

        11) Boise State's last six bowl games were decided by total of 18 points, with underdogs going 5-1 against the spread.

        10) If Army upsets Navy Saturday, they play Temple in the Eagle Bank Bowl; if Navy wins, then UCLA goes to Washington to play the Owls.

        9) Central Michigan must have gotten tired of going to the Motor City Bowl, so they're playing Troy in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, which is basically a road game for the Chippewas. This should be one of the best bowl games though-- two league champions going at it.

        8) Total for Arizona-Nebraska game is 41, very un-Holiday Bowl-like. Usually one of the most exciting games, having offensively challenged Cornhuskers in the game should be a little different.

        7) June Jones is going back to Hawai'i with his SMU Mustangs, who have their hands full with Nevada's powerful running game. First bowl in 25 years for the Mustangs, so its already been a good year for them.

        6) Wyoming made it to a bowl game? Fresno State isn't used to being a favorite. Would have thought they could get a higher profile opponent.

        5) Clemson has all the motivation in the world; first, three bowls passed on the normally-popular Tigers (Florida bowls were hesitant since they just played in ACC title game in Tampa), then James Spiller didn't even get invited to NYC for the Heisman ceremonies. Doesn't seem right on either count. Would expect Spiller to have a big bowl game.

        4) Idaho-Bowling Green could be an excellent shootout if the weather in Boise holds out for Humanitarian Bowl. Its been played in ice before.

        3) Skip Holtz' East Carolina team faces Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl; Lou Holtz coached Arkansas in late 70's, so Skip had to spend a decent amount of his childhood in Little Rock. Could be a good game.

        2) Nick Saban bristled Sunday night when TV pundits were playing up Alabama as a decided favorite over Texas in the national title game. Not like the Longhorns are Boise or TCU, but they did struggle against the Cornhuskers in Big 12 title game. Alabama seems like the best team.

        1) Classic situation where the underdog often wins SU; Cincinnati is an undefeated underdog playing a disappointed traditional power down in the Sugar Bowl. Cincinnati had a porous defense in the Big East, so not sure how they'll stop an SEC team on carpet, but they're a live dog.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Boston Celtics (-12.5, 191)

The Celtics have won seven straight with the last four coming on the road by an average margin of 12.5 points. The C's held opponents to 43 percent shooting from the floor and 15 percent from beyond the arc in those last four games.

The key to their succes has been an the defensive end. They're getting into jerseys, contesting shots and forcing players into uncomfortable situations.

“For the most part, what gave us this hope on the road has been our defensive communication,’’ Kevin Garnett said. “I think we’ve been loud, we’ve been talking and we’ve really been into it.

That's bad news for the slumping Bucks.

              Pick: Boston

Minnesota Timberwolves at Toronto Raptors (-8, 212)

The Raps are playing better basketball since GM Bryan Colangelo held a team meeting earlier this week.

The players since more focused defensively and there seems to be some sense of urgency.

The team is making a conscious effort to crash the boards and rotate quickly off the pick and roll. Toronto held the Bulls to 78 points on Saturday just three days after the Hawks torched the Canadian club for 146.

The Wolves are getting great play from a healthy Kevin Love but their point guards are still struggling with coach Kurt Rambis' offense.

              Pick: Toronto

                  Tuesday, December 8

Information on the best of Tuesday's college hoop games........
When I give W-L records for these teams, I eliminate the non-Division I games, because to me they don't mean anything, unless they lost the game.

Miami OH (+3.5) won 68-52 at Temple LY; Red Hawks are 2-5 after a 65-58 home loss to Dayton- they're 1-1 at home. MAC home underdogs are 2-6 vs spread. A-14 road favorites are 7-6. Owls are 6-2, with wins over MAC members Ball State (66-46), at Western Michigan (76-70). Temple is 2-1 on road, (won by 20 Delaware, lost by 1 at Georgetown).

Young George Mason is 4-4 (2-0 at home, Liberty/Dartmouth) after its 57-52 road win in CAA opener at UNCW; CAA underdogs are 20-13 vs spread, 3-2 at home. Dayton is 5-2, winning only road game at Miami 65-58. Both teams went 1-2 in same tourney last month, getting beat by Villanova, Ga Tech. Atlantic 14 road favorites are 7-6 vs spread.

Butler is 6-2, 4-2 away from Hinkle Fieldhouse, losing on neutral court to Minnesota, Clemson; their best win is at Northwestern. Horizon dogs are 11-12 vs spread in non-league games. Georgetown is 6-0 but its only good win was 46-45 vs Temple. Big East favorites are 14-6 vs spread away from home. Butler has edge in experience.

Toledo (+5) lost 50-35 in ugly game at Wright State LY; Rockets are 1-5 vs D-I teams (only win vs UMBC), 2-2 vs spread as a dog. MAC dogs are 11-21 vs spread, 2-6 at home. Wright won league games by 9-13 last week; they're 0-2 on road (Washington/Northwestern), 2-1-2 vs spread as a favorite. Horizon favorites are 4-5 vs spread on the road.

TCU (+9.5) won 85-80 at Texas Tech LY; Horned Frogs are 4-3, losing only home game 68-63 at La Tech. Underdogs are 5-2 vs spread in TCU games this fall. Tech handed Washington its first loss in OT last week; Red Raiders are 8-0 but playing first road game; Huskies are only good team they played so far. Big 12 road teams are 20-13 vs spread.

Iowa coach Lickliter is ill, will miss this game; Hawkeyes (-6) won 65-46 over Northern Iowa LY, but they're 3-5 this year despite this being their first true road game (lost two neutral court games by 25-17). UNI is 5-1 with wins over BC, at Denver, at Iowa State- they won only home game 52-45 over No. Illinois. MVC home favorites are 6-8 vs spread.

Young Illinois is 6-2, winning at Clemson last week after being down 20 at half; they're 0-5 vs spread as a favorite this year. Big 11 home faves are 15-6 vs spread in non-league games. Vanderbilt is 6-1, with only loss 67-58 to Cincinnati on Maui- they won only road game at St Mary's by a hoop. SEC underdogs are 6-10 against the spread.

Cal-Northridge is 3-4 playing tough schedule; they're 3-2 vs spread as a dog, losing by 12 at Washington, 1 at Western Kentucky, 18 at TCU and 25 at Purdue. Big West road dogs are 14-10 vs spread. Denver won five of first seven games, losing last game 64-59 at Colorado State. Pioneers are 1-2 as a favorite. Sun Belt home favorites are 5-5 vs spread.

Kansas State is 6-1, losing on neutral court to Ole Miss 86-74; Wildcats are 3-2 as favorite- they also beat Dayton on neutral court. Home faves from Big 12 are 14-7 vs spread. Xavier is 5-2, losing two of three down in Orlando tourney (lost by 10 to Marquette, 5 to Baylor). This is first true road game for Musketeers. A-14 road underdogs are 6-17.

Pitt led New Hampshire 15-7 at half in last game (won 47-32); young Panthers still haven't played road game- they lost 78-62 to Texas on a neutral court, their only loss. Indiana is 3-4 with no good wins, as Crean rebuilds once-proud program- their losses are by 4-18-2-12 pts. Big 11 underdogs are 7-10, 6-6 away from home.

San Francisco (+6) lost 82-76 at San Jose LY, after being down 10 at the half; Dons are 1-6 vs D-I teams this year, losing last six games (0-6 vs spread, 0-5 as dog). WCC home underdogs are 5-2. San Jose is 2-3, 1-2 on road, losing by 10 at Washington, 4 at Riverside. Spartans are 1-0 as favorite- their only road win was 82-74 at Utah Valley State.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Nashville Predators (-110, 5.5)

Just when you think the Canucks have got it all figured out, they decide to lay an egg. After earning back-to-back road wins in New Jersey and Philadelphia, Vancouver got thumped 5-3 by the worst team in the league Saturday night in Carolina.

Vancouver wasn’t physical enough getting outhit two-to-one by the Hurricanes and were careless with the puck leaving backup goalie Andrew Raycroft to fend for himself. The Canucks completely collapsed in the second period when they were outscored 3-0.

“It’s certainly disappointing to lose this one,” said defenseman Willie Mitchell following the loss. “We weren’t prepared to play, so Nashville becomes a must-win for us to finish this trip above .500.”

Vancouver has been up and down all year and has yet to rack up more than three consecutive wins. But expect the club to bounce back against the Predators in an effort to salvage the four-game road swing.

                          Pick: Canucks

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (-160, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators responded to owner Eugene Melnyk’s challenge with a 4-3 shootout win over the Anaheim Ducks Sunday night.

“It’s obvious what we need: The elite players have to start playing their best and once they do that, I think we can be as competitive as ever,” Melnyk said Sunday afternoon. “We’re hoping that happens fairly quickly and we can get right back to where we were at the beginning of the season.”

Melnyk didn’t name any names, but looking at players’ statistics, it’s no secret his statement was aimed at Jason Spezza and Alexei Kovalev. Kovalev hasn’t scored a regulation goal in 13 games while Spezza has only six points in his last 10.

The stars of this team will definitely be looking to impress the boss at home against the Habs, another struggling Eastern Conference team.

                          Pick: Senators
