    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, December 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Flyers battle the Canadiens, the Spurs try for a win in Utah, and the Ravens and Packers hit the gridiron under the lights.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's Baltimore (6-5 SU, 6-5 ATS) at Green Bay (7-4 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) as Monday Night Football hits the gridiron at Lambeau Field this week. The Ravens slipped past rival Pittsburgh 20-17 in overtime last Sunday, as Joe Flacco went 23-of-35 for 289 yards passing with one touchdown and no interceptions. Ray Rice ran for 88 yards on 19 attempts, while Willis McGahee had a TD run, and Derrick Mason had a TD catch. Billy Cundiff booted a 29-yard field goal for the win in overtime.

The Packers had no trouble beating lowly Detroit on Thanksgiving Day, getting three touchdown strikes from Aaron Rodgers in the 34-12 road victory. Rodgers went 28-of-39 for 348 yards passing in that contest, with no interceptions, while Donald Driver, Donald Lee, and James Jones had the TD catches. Charles Woodson also returned an interception for a score. Oddsmakers have Green Bay as a 4-point home favorite for Monday night, with the total for the contest at 42.5.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are four games on tap in the NBA on Monday, with Denver at Philadelphia, Portland at New York, Golden State at Oklahoma City, and San Antonio at Utah. The Spurs (9-8 SU, 8-9 ATS) fell 106-99 at home to Denver on Saturday night, with Tony Parker scoring a team-high 27 points and Tim Duncan adding 26 points. The Jazz (11-8 SU, 10-9 ATS) lost 108-101 in Minnesota on Saturday, with Carlos Boozer scoring 21 points and Deron Williams contributing 18 points.

Michigan State (at Citadel), Texas A&M (vs. North Texas), and Texas (vs. Long Beach State) are the top teams in action in college basketball on Monday night. The Longhorns (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS) stayed perfect on the season with a 69-50 win over Southern Cal last Thursday. Damion Jones was good for 19 points for Texas in that victory. Long Beach State (4-3 SU, 4-2 ATS) is coming off a 79-68 win over UCLA In the 76 Classic, with T.J. Robinson scoring 25 points on the day.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are nine games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Monday, including Philadelphia at Montreal. The 13-12-1 Flyers were blasted 8-2 at home by the Capitals on Saturday night, with Peter Laviolette making his head-coaching debut with the team. The 13-14-2 Canadiens are coming off a 5-1 win over the Bruins on Friday night, as Mike Cammalleri recorded a hat trick. Jaroslav Spacek and Glen Metropolit also had markers for the Habs in that win.

Also on the ice on Monday: New Jersey at Buffalo, Atlanta at Toronto, Carolina at Pittsburgh, Washington at Tampa Bay, Edmonton at Florida, Colorado at St. Louis, Minnesota at Phoenix, and Calgary at Los Angeles. The 18-7-3 Flames edged the Sharks 2-1 in San Jose on Saturday night, with Daymond Langkow scoring the game-winning goal. The 17-10-3 Kings fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Blues on Saturday. Jon Quick stopped 27 of 31 St. Louis shots in regulation time.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Monday, December 7

      Lambeau slip

Both the Ravens and Packers need a win to remain in the playoff picture, but points may come at a premium on Monday night. Snow showers are forecasted for Green Bay from 8 a.m. until the early afternoon which could complicate playing conditions at Lambeau Field. There is only a 10 percent chance of precipitation during the game with a mild wind out of the northwest (endzone to endzone). Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-to-low 20s.

The total for the game opened at 44 and can be found as low as 42.5 at some shops now. Green Bay is a 3.5-point favorite.

The Ravens have a 2-5 over/under record in their last seven games.

      Philly has The Answer

Allen Iverson will make his triumphant return to Philadelphia on Monday. Coincidentally, “The Answer” will face the team that plucked him from the 76ers four years ago. The 10-time All-Star has played 19 career games against the Nuggets, averaging 27.4 ppg.

Iverson last played for Philly during the 2006-07 season. With Iverson in the lineup for 15 games that year, the 76ers went 5-10 overall and 8-7 ATS.

Injuries to guards Willie Green, Louis Williams and Jrue Holiday will thrust Iverson into the starting lineup. In three games as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies this season, AI averaged 12.3 ppg and 3.7 apg.

These two teams are on completely different levels. Denver has won 9-of-11, covering in three straight, while the 76ers have lost nine in a row.

      Colorado blues

St. Louis will try to improve upon its division-leading road record (7-2-3) when it faces the Avalanche in Denver. The Blues faired well against Colorado last year, playing outstanding defense in three wins while outscoring the Avs 10-3.

Avalanche Goalie Craig Anderson has missed the last two games with a sore neck and is listed as “day-to-day”. Backup Peter Budaj will start against St. Louis if Anderson cannot go. Budaj has allowed an average of 3.24 goals in six games this season and the Blues are 2-2-0-1 with him under the net.

St. Louis has won four of the last five meetings in this series and 8-of-12.

The Blues are a -150 favorite with a total of 5.5.

      Ahhh-burn!

The ACC and SEC meet on the hardcourt Monday night when Virginia and Auburn collide.

The Cavaliers look to get back on track after losing to Penn State, 69-66, a week ago. They might get some help from forward Jamil Tucker who is expected to return for his first game of the season after dealing with personal matters. Tucker is a dangerous three-point shooter and averaged 7.4 ppg and 3.8 rpg last year.

Auburn has 3-0 ATS in three meetings against Virginia during the past decade. The Tigers edged the Cavaliers 58-56 last December as 3.5-point underdogs.

Virginia has experienced a case of the Mondays recently, going 1-8 ATS in the team’s last nine games on Monday.

Auburn opened as a 4-point favorite with a total of 135.

      Notable quotable

“Handling the football from a skill position, whether it's a punter, kicker, quarterback, wide receiver, is definitely something that you always increase the focus on when you get to this time of the year. I mean 20-25 degrees, we practiced outside today. I don't really consider that cold. We practice in it, so it should be a benefit to us.”

-- Packers head coach Mike McCarthy on December weather affecting ball protection.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- It sucks that Boise State is playing TCU in a bowl; the big boys are too gutless to play either of these unbeaten upstarts.

-- Bowl people arranged a Florida State-West Virginia bowl game that will be Bobby Bowden's going away party; what does it say that the powers-that-be can arrange a game like this? The system is corrupt.

-- Florida coach Urban Meyer was hospitalized for dehydration after his Gators lost to Alabama in Atlanta Saturday.

-- No truth to rumor Vikings have hired Darrell Waltrip as offensive coordinator, after a second Viking was clocked going over 100 mph. First Adrian Peterson, now Bernard Berrian. Hire chauffeurs, fellas.

-- NFL stadiums that also host high school/college games should have to use FieldTurf playing surfaces instead of grass.

-- Portland Trailblazers once drafted injury-prone Sam Bowie ahead of Michael Jordan; only thing Bowie did better than Jordan was break his bones. Now Blazers have Greg Oden, drafted ahead of Kevin Durant. Oden tore his knee up this weekend, is done for the season. Sad thing.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday..........

        13) Vegas took Patriot-Dolphin game off the board for an hour during the week because of a rumor about Tom Brady being hurt. At one point in third quarter Sunday, Brady was 14-15 for 277 yards, with two TDs passing. So much for being injured. Still, if you bet Miami based on that inaccurate rumor, you won. Go figure.

        12) Only four weeks left in the season, and Patriots still haven't won a road game (0-5). They beat the Bucs in London, a neutral site game, but hard to believe they haven't won yet in a true road game.

        11) 17 of Jay Cutler's 20 interceptions have come on the road.

        10) Buccaneers had six points, five INTs at Carolina. Tampa Bay had ball inside Panthers' 20-yard line four times, scored only three points.

        9) Michael Vick threw a TD, ran for a TD as Eagles crushed Atlanta in Vick's homecoming game. Will be interesting to see who the Eagles can bamboozle into taking Vick off their hands this winter.

        8) If you watched Bruce Gradkowski play in Pittsburgh, you'd wonder how the hell he was ever playing behind JaMarcus Russell, and if you didn't know the standings and watched the Raiders upset the Steelers, you'd be shocked to find out they're 4-8.

        7) Raiders trailed 10-6 after three quarters in Pittsburgh; they had ball three times in fourth quarter, gaining 229 yards on 24 plays with three TDs, as Steeler secondary turned Bruce Gradkowski into Ken Stabler.

        6) New England had ball in red zone three times, and scored one TD, as Brady threw an end zone pick with Patriots up 21-19, after they failed to run for a first down in first half when leading by seven points. Tough year for the Patriots' coach as a game manager.

        5) Chargers averaged 14.3 yards per pass, Patriots 12.1 and the Steelers 10.8, but none of them covered, and only San Diego won.

        4) Giants had scoring plays of 21-74-79 yards as they awoke from their slumber to beat the Cowboys 31-24. Dallas is now 18-35 in its last 53 December games; they led 10-0 late in second quarter before giving up a pair of TDs in a 1:27 span that turned the game around.

        3) Chiefs averaged just 2.8 yards/pass, completed only 16-43 thru the air in a hideous 44-13 home loss to Denver. Losses like that make it unclear if they've made any progress at all this season.

        2) Best game of day was Saints' wild 33-30 OT win at Washington, in a game that saw Redskins drive inside Saints' red zone seven times out of 10 times with ball (three TDs, 3-4 on FGs). Suisham missed a 23-yard FG with 1:53 left, which gave Saints a chance to tie, which they quickly did, then Sellers lost a fumble in OT that set up Saints' winning kick.

        1) Check out SportsCenter for highlights of the Meachem TD at end of the half for the Saints; Brees threw an INT, but then Meachem stole ball out of the defender's hands and ran in for an unlikely TD. Turns out it was the difference in the game, a very bizarre, exciting game.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz

It’s been a whacky season for the Spurs. The club has endured injuries to each of its three star players and newcomer Richard Jefferson still doesn’t look comfortable within the offense.

Even more unsettling for San Antonio backers, the squad has turned the ball over 37 times in its last two games, something unheard of under head coach Gregg Popovich.

“I was really pleased with the aggressiveness and hustle, but again it was the turnovers, for however many points, that was the killer,” Popovich told the San Antonio Express-News after losing to the Nuggets.

Sure, the Spurs are still hustling on defense, but if they don’t figure out their offensive awkwardness soon they might not have home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Winning in Utah is too tall a task for this scattered San Antonio crew.

              Pick: Jazz

Golden State Warriors at Oklahoma City Thunder

Warriors coach Don Nelson, who’s still getting over pneumonia, isn’t going on this road trip at the advice of his doctors. Someone else will be joining the team and that’s good news for G-State backers.

Center Andris Biedrins is accompanying his mates on the four-game road trip which could be a good indicator he’s close to returning to the lineup.

“We miss Andris Biedrins, our best rebounder,” guard Monta Ellis told the San Francisco Chronicle. “You forgot he was on the team, didn’t you?”

Biedrins hasn’t planned since Nov. 6 when he strained his abdominal and groin muscles. Without their starting center, the Warriors are forced to give large minutes to NBA journeymen Mikki Moore and Vladimir Radmanovic.

That won’t cut it against the up and coming Thunder. Expect Oklahoma guard Thabo Sefolosha to slow down Ellis and the Thunder to walk away with an easy cover.

              Pick: Oklahoma City

                  Monday, December 7

Information on Monday's college hoop games........by the way, when I give W-L records for these teams, I eliminate the non-Division I games, because to me they don't mean anything, unless they lost the game.

Seton Hall is 6-0 with a 10-point win at Cornell; four of their last five wins are by 15+ points. Big East home favorites are 14-20 vs the spread. UMass is 4-2, winning four of last five games, but they're 0-3 vs spread as an underdog- they lost by 13 at home to Cornell. Atlantic 14 road underdogs are 6-16 vs spread.

Providence crushed Brown by 26 LY (was up 23 at half); Friars lost at URI 86-82 Saturday, after being up 14 at half- they're 5-3 this year, 2-3 in last five games (0-1 as favorite). Brown is 4-6 after losing 91-55 at Minnesota Saturday (down 51-20 at half). Ivy road underdogs are 8-13 vs spread. Big East home favorites are 14-20 against the spread.

North Texas is 3-2 after 63-61 win at Rice Saturday; they're 2-2 on road, losing by 14 at Oklahoma State, 6 at Boise- they're 0-1-1 as a road dog. Texas A&M is 6-1 with wins over Clemson (69-60), Minnesota (66-65) two of their six wins are by more than 12 points. Big 12 home favorites are 13-6 vs spread. Sun Belt road underdogs are 18-17.

Auburn (+4) won 58-56 at Virginia LY, after being up 11 at half; Tigers are 3-4 after getting upset at home by Troy Friday night. Virginia is 4-3, 0-1 on road, losing by 17 at South Florida. SEC home favorites are 10-16 against spread. ACC road dogs are 7-6 vs spread in non-division games.

Long Beach State is 3-3, playing tough schedule- they've lost at Notre Dame by 20, to West Va by 23, Clemson by 8 in Anaheim, but they've also won at Green Bay and beat UCLA, so they won't be scared here, in Austin against Texas team that is 6-0 (5-1 vs spread) with 78-62 win vs Pittsburgh the closest game they've played this year.

Michigan State is 6-2, losing to North Carolina/Florida (gave up 77-89 in those losses); they're 2-4 vs spread as favorite this year. SEC road faves are 4-5 vs spread. Citadel lost by 11, won by 25 in its first two SoCon games; this is their third game in five nights. SoCon underdogs are 13-19 vs spread, 2-3 at home. Big 11 road favorites are 6-6 vs spread.

Charleston won its first two SoCon games by 9-12 points; they swept NC-Greensboro three times LY, winning by 15-16-13 points; they've lost all three road games, including trips to Co. Carolina, East Tennessee. UNCG is 2-4 after winning by 33 in SoCon opener at Samford; both its wins have been on the road (76-70 at SC-Upstate).

Road team won both Appalachian State-Wofford games LY; ASU is 3-4 after being upset 85-82 by Furman in SoCon opener. Wofford is 3-5 so far, losing SoCon opener by 5 at W. Carolina and then falling by 12 at Michigan State Friday, but they've played tough schedule, losing to Pitt by 3, Bradley by 2, Illinois by 14.

Siena is 5-3 after crushing crosstown rival Albany, but they're 3-3 in last six games, losing to Temple-Ga Tech-St John's. Saints are 3-2 as a fave this year- they beat Iona twice LY, by 15 herem but only by 1 at home. Iona lost MAAC opener by hoop to St Peter's; they're 1-3 in last four games after 3-0 start, losing by 5 to Florida State, 10 in OT to Baylor.

Bradley is 4-2 this year, 1-2 vs spread as favorite, winning home games by 5 over Idaho St. (-13), 2 over Wofford (-7). MVC home favorites are 6-7 vs spread in non-league games. Western Carolina won its first two SoCon games, by 5-7 points, but they lost by 32 at Texas, while they also beat decent Duquesne team by 6. SoCon road dogs are 11-16.

                          Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Canadiens

If the goal of a coaching change was to shake up the players, mission accomplished for Paul Holmgren. The Flyers GM fired John Stevens and replaced him with former Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette.

The news hit Philly captain Mike Richards the hardest. The two-way forward made big strides while under coach Stevens’ guidance.

“My heart stopped,” Richards told the Philadelphia Daily News. “John has given me a lot. He made me realize my potential as a pro and he gave me the opportunity to succeed in this league.”

The players in the locker room knew Stevens was on the hot seat. Richards called Holmgren earlier in the week and assured him that the recent slump (1-7 over the last eight games) could be fixed, but Holmgren wasn’t buying it.

“I think the older guys will understand,” Holmgren said after the switch. “For the younger guys who have been around John for a number of years, it’s probably going to be a little bit tougher for them.”

Don’t expect an inspired effort from Richards Monday against the Habs.

                          Pick: Montreal

Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning

Alexander Ovechkin was not happy about the two-game suspension he received after a knee-to-knee hit he had with Canes defenseman Tim Gleason. Ovechkin was the one who came away hurt from the blow, but he was ejected for the second time in three games which led to the suspension.

“It is what it is. Nothing I want to say about it,” Ovechkin told the Washington Examiner. “I’m disappointed.”

His teammates made out well without their star winger. The Caps scored 14 goals and went 2-0 in his absence.

Ovie is eligible to return to the lineup Monday and should be motivated to make a splash.

That’s bad news for the Lightning.

                          Pick: Washington
