    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, December 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Colts play host to the Titans, the Saints try to pick up a win in Washington, and the Cardinals try to knock off the Vikings.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Two teams that have combined for 16 consecutive victories will take the field on Sunday afternoon when Indianapolis hosts Tennessee. The Colts (11-0 SU, 7-4 ATS) remained perfect on the season with a 35-27 win at Houston last week. Peyton Manning threw for 244 yards and three scores in that win, with the Colts scoring three TDs in the fourth quarter. The Titans (5-6 SU, 5-6 ATS) won their fifth straight last week, topping Arizona 20-17 behind 387 yards and a TD from Vince Young. Indy has been pegged as the 6.5-point favorite for Sunday's game.

The league's other unbeaten team, the Saints (11-0 SU, 8-3 ATS) will be looking to cruise to their 12th straight win on Sunday when they play the Redskins (3-8 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) in Washington. New Orleans had no trouble with the Patriots on Monday night, getting five touchdown strikes from Drew Brees in a 38-17 home win. Washington fell 27-24 in Philadelphia in their Week 12 matchup. Oddsmakers have the Saints set as 9.5-point favorites on the road this weekend.

Also on the NFL schedule for Sunday: St. Louis at Chicago (-9.5), Tampa Bay at Carolina (-5.5), Houston at Jacksonville (pick'em), Denver (-5) at Kansas City, Philadelphia (-5.5) at Atlanta, Oakland at Pittsburgh (-14.5), Detroit at Cincinnati (-13), New England (-4) at Miami, San Diego (-13.5) at Cleveland, Dallas (-2.5) at the Giants, and San Francisco at Seattle (pick'em). As well, the Cardinals will host the Vikings on Sunday Night Football, with Minnesota a 3-point road favorite.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are five games on the NBA's Sunday slate, with New Jersey at New York, Cleveland at Milwaukee, Washington at Detroit, Miami at Sacramento, and Phoenix at the Lakers. The Suns and Lakers last met in Los Angeles on November 12, with Kobe Bryant and company pulling out a 121-102 home victory. Bryant had a game-high 29 points for the Lakers in that win, while Andrew Bynum had 26 points. Steve Nash tossed in 13 points for the losing Suns.

As well, two of the top three teams in college hoops are in action on Sunday, with No. 3 Villanova at Maryland, and No. 1 Kansas at UCLA. The top-ranked Jayhawks (6-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) rolled over Alcorn State in their last contest, getting 18 points from Xavier Henry in a 98-31 win. The Bruins (2-4 SU, 2-3 ATS) were knocked off 79-68 by Long Beach State in their most recent matchup at the 76 Classic. Michael Roll tossed in a team-high 23 points for the Bruins in that defeat.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just two games on the National Hockey League schedule for Sunday, with the Rangers hosting the Wings and Ottawa on the road in Anaheim. The Ducks won't have forward Teemu Selanne in the lineup for the Sunday matchup; the veteran, who had 14 goals and 21 points in 27 games, is out indefinitely after breaking his hand in Thursday night's road loss in Dallas. The Senators are still without goalie Pascal Leclaire, who has a fractured cheekbone.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, December 6

      Looking for Moore

Jake Delhomme will miss Sunday’s game against the Bucs because of a broken finger on his throwing hand. Matt Moore will take over under center and many have claimed the backup will actually boost the Panthers offense. The former Oregon State signal-caller has started in three games during this three-year NFL career with all of them coming in his rookie season of 2007. Moore led Carolina to a 2-1 record as a starter and the team went 3-0 ATS in those games.

The Panthers opened as a 6.5-point favorite but the news of Delhomme’s injury has dropped the line to 5. The total has fallen from an opener of 42 to 40.

      Feeling the Heat

The Kings enter into their fourth back-to-back situation of the season after coming off a 115-107 loss to the Suns in Phoenix on Saturday. Sacramento is 1-2 straight up and 2-1 ATS in the second of back-to-back games this season. One of those ATS wins came on a Sunday where the Kings are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Sabbath games.

The Kings will have to deal with D-Wade and the Heat who are 9-1 ATS during the last 10 games of this series.

      Cinco de Pass-o

Cedric Benson will return as the starting tailback for the Bengals who have been a run-oriented team this season. In Cincinnati’s past two games against the Raiders and Browns, the team ran the ball 88 times compared to 46 pass attempts. But given Chad Ocho Cinco’s “notable quotable” remark below, you might see the Bengals look to revive the air attack against the Lions. Detroit ranks last in the league in pass defense, giving up 281 ypg and 27 touchdowns on the season.

Cincy has gone 5-1 ATS in the last six games of this matchup.

Oddsmakers installed the Bengals as a 13-point favorite with a total of 42.

      Bruins in ruins

The mighty Bruins are experiencing a down year on the hardcourt. The team is 2-3 on the season with losses to CS Fullerton, Long Beach State and Portland, with the latter being a 27-point blowout. UCLA was dealt a huge blow when starting center Drew Gordon announced last Tuesday he would be leaving the team. Gordon was averaging 11.2 ppg and 5.3 rpg.

UCLA faces the No. 1-ranked Jayhawks on Sunday. Kansas is a 14.5-point favorite with a game total of 139. The last three games in this series have gone under.

      Redman a method man

Chris Redman will start at quarterback for the Falcons in place of an injured Matt Ryan. The seven-year veteran out of Louisville took over during Atlanta’s win over Tampa Bay, efficiently guiding his team behind a 243-yard, two-touchdown performance. Redman’s career completion percentage is 56.2 percent while holding a 19-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. In 10 career starts with the Falcons and Ravens, Redman is 5-5 straight up and 6-4 ATS.

When Ryan and Michael Turner were officially listed as doubtful, this line moved from the Falcons being a 6-point favorite to a 5-point favorite.

The Eagles have gone 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meeting of this series.

      Notable quotable

"I'm not going to let them treat us like that for three straight games. We won the game. We had a wonderful day on the ground. I asked for us to run the ball. This basically solidifies us being able to run the ball right now. Now [on Sunday] things are going to have to change. The roles need to be reversed. I'm speaking on behalf of myself and the receiving corps. We would like to throw the ball 50 times. I just want to relay that message."

-- Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco outlining the fact that Cincinnati has predominately run the ball the last two games.

        Six-pack for Sunday

NFL trends to ponder, with 14 games scheduled for Sunday

-- Tennessee is 8-1 vs spread as an underdog in division games.

-- Texans covered 11 of last 15 games against Jacksonville.

-- Denver is 6-10-1 vs spread as a division favorite.

-- Patriots are 15-4 vs spread in last 19 divisional road games.

-- Rams covered six of last seven non-divisional road games.

-- Lions failed to cover last six games overall.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy sports Saturday.......

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy sports Saturday.......

        13) Kicker named Hunter Lawrence drilled a 46-yard FG on last play of game, after officials used replay to put 0:01 back on clock, giving Texas a tense 13-12 win over Nebraska and a spot in the national title game. No one could have bitched too loudly had they not put that second back on the clock-- it was that close a decision.

        12) Lawrence's boot saves Colt McCoy from being the goat, as horrible clock management on last drive camethisclose to sending Longhorns into infamy for screwing up the final drive. It also saves the BCS from having to explain why Alabama was playing whomever would have wound up as the other team in the national title game. The system was saved from being exposed for what it is; a corrupt white elephant.

        11) Cornhuskers came within an eyelash of winning a game where they gained 106 total yards on 55 plays, with five first downs. Ouch.

        10) Cincinnati finishes regular season 12-0 with a thrilling 45-44 win at Heinz Field; Bearcats trailed 31-10 at one point late in 2nd quarter. This is second time in last four games Cincy won game after giving up more than 40 points. I wouldn't have a problem voting for their WR Gilyard as one of the top three Heisman Trophy finalists; he is that good.

        9) Bottom line though, I'd vote for the Spiller kid from Clemson to win the Heisman, with Ingram of Alabama second and Gilyard third.

        8) Houston's Case Keenum was 56-75 passing for 527 yards in a 38-32 loss at East Carolina in the Conference USA title game. It is hard to win at any level of football when you're minus-3 in turnovers.

        7) Former Nebraska QB Turner Gill, now coach at Buffalo, is said to be the frontrunner for the Kansas Jayhawks' vacant head coaching job.

        6) Illinois scored 52 points Saturday.....and lost 53-52. Fresno scored on a 19-yard pass with 0:02 left; instead of kicking the tying PAT and going to OT, Pat Hill went for two, and went back home with a win.

        5) USC lost at home to Arizona, finished 6th in the Pac-10. Wow. How does Pete Carroll get them up to play in a bowl in San Francisco or San Jose or Tucson? Answer: He probably won't be able to do it.

        4) Providence, Marquette both lost non-league games after leading by a double-digit margin at halftime. Friars lost to bitter rival Rhode Island.

        3) Pac-10 now trails Big 12 6-2 after K-State, Missouri won easily and Cal Bears waxed Iowa State Cyclones. Pac-10 is really struggling.

        2) Turner kid from Ohio State hurt his back falling after a dunk and will be out for 6-8 weeks, a very damaging loss for the Buckeyes.

        1) Handicapping Tip of the Week: When there is a big game, and one of the star players is scratched because he got a DUI during the week, it is always smart to go against that team (goes double for college games and triple if the suspended kid's team is favored to win).

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Milwaukee Bucks (+7, 196)

King James appears to have his court back in order.

After a 3-3 start to the season, Cleveland has gone 11-2 since. The Cavs recently rolled through a three-game homestand, winning against Dallas, Phoenix and Chicago by a combined margin of 15.3 ppg and covering the spread in all three contests.

"There is a long way to go; it's just December," said James. "It is good to play well now, but at the same time we do not want to reach our peak right now. We want to continue to get better and closer to playoff time is when we really want to start dominating."

After a torrid start, Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings has come back to earth. Over the last seven games, Jennings hasn’t scored more than 18 points while averaging 14.7 ppg and shooting a porous 30.4 percent from the field.

Head coach Scott Skiles returns to the Bucks bench after serving a one-game suspension for not leaving the court after being ejected in a game on Wednesday. Michael Redd is still nursing a sore right knee and won’t be in the lineup.

Cleveland has won three straight in this series, including two in Milwaukee, and has gone 3-0 ATS during that span. Expect to see more of the same domination against the slumping Bucks who have lost five of their last seven.

              Pick: Cavaliers

Washington Wizards at Detroit Pistons (-3, 189)

Two integral pieces of the Pistons puzzle have been sitting on the sidelines in suits for most of the season and it has taken a toll.

Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince have been absent from the Detroit lineup since early November. The Pistons have dropped eight of their last 10 and are 7-12 on the season.

"They're getting close," Kuester said. "Unfortunately right now, we don't have a lot of time to practice. They're starting to get involved in some of it, Tayshaun especially."

Not only have the Pistons been dealing with injuries to their two biggest stars, but role players Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva have been banged up as well.

Villanueva returned to action Friday wearing a protective facemask after breaking his nose, and Ben Gordon has fought through an ankle injury and played the last two games.

"It's still sprained, so I'm just trying to do what I can out there," Gordon said.

Oddsmakers continue to be confused when setting the total when these two teams meet. The total has been set as low as 179 and as high as 200 during the last five games of this series. The books have undervalued the offensive output in these matchups with the over going 4-1 during that timeframe.

Detroit holds a 10-4-1 over/under record without Hamilton in the lineup. Young replacement players because of injuries usually equate to turnovers and a frenetic pace of play.

              Pick: Over

Detroit Red Wings at New York Rangers

Henrik Lundqvist is tired of putting the entire Rangers organization on his back. The once-unbreakable goaltender has been about as solid as a house of cards in recent starts.

Lundqvist has allowed a total of 10 goals in his last two appearances. After allowing five goals to the Tampa Bay Lightning last Friday, the team gave their star goalie a rest (in which backup Stephen Valiquette gave up eight goals on 33 shots) in hopes of Lundqvist returning to form versus the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday. However, he watched four goals zing past him in a 5-2 loss – the team's third straight heading into Saturday's game with the Buffalo Sabres.

“The only frustration is that we are not winning,” Lundqvist told reporters.

“I feel frustration not coming up with the big saves in the end. I think a lot of guys feel frustration not scoring. In the end, the only thing that matters is if we win or not.”

New York now faces one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Detroit is second in the NHL in shots per game, peppering opposing netminders with an average of more than 34 shots a night. The Red Wings are scoring just under three goals per game and have won the last three versus the Rangers, totaling nine goals in that span.

                          Pick: Detroit

                          Ottawa Senators at Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks are going to be without one of their top guns for the next two to four weeks.

The team announced Friday that veteran forward Teemu Selanne will be sidelined after undergoing surgery to repair a fracture in his left hand. The 39-year-old Finnish standout has 14 goals and seven assists this season, sitting third in points on the Ducks roster.

Selanne broke the bone in the team's loss to the Dallas Stars Thursday night. It was part of Anaheim's current three-game losing skid which included back-to-back road losses. The Ducks return to the Honda Center Sunday, but shaking their current funk can't come from a change of venue.

The Ducks have allowed four goals per game during this slide, going over the total twice. They have a similar over/under mark in their last three games with the Senators, who have also struggled keeping the puck out of the net. Ottawa has gone over the total in three straight games heading into Saturday's clash with Phoenix.

                          Pick: Over
