    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, December 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Spurs host the Celtics, the Bills take on the Jets in Toronto, and Oregon State meets Oregon in a big Pac-10 matchup.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL's Thursday night game this week is a matchup of middling AFC East clubs, with the Jets (5-6 SU, 5-6 ATS) playing Buffalo (4-7 SU, 6-5 ATS) at Toronto's Rogers Centre. The Jets are coming off a 17-6 home win over Carolina in Week 12, with Thomas Jones rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown in the contest. The Bills got past Miami 31-14 last week, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter of that victory. Oddsmakers have the Jets pegged as 3-point road favorites for Thursday, with the total at 37.

As well, there are two games on the college football schedule for Thursday, with Arkansas State at Western Kentucky, and No. 13 Oregon State at No. 7 Oregon; the Beavers (8-3 SU, 6-4 ATS) and Ducks (9-2 SU, 7-4 ATS) will be playing for both the Pac-10 championship and a berth in this year's Rose Bowl. Oregon State beat Washington State 42-10 last time out, while Oregon is coming off a 44-41 win over Arizona. Oregon is a 10-point favorite, with the total at 61 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has three games on tap for Thursday, with Miami at Denver, Houston at Golden State, and Boston at San Antonio. The Spurs have improved to 9-6 SU and 8-7 ATS on the season thanks to their current five-game winning streak. San Antonio got past Philadelphia at home by a score of 97-89 in their last game on Sunday, with Tim Duncan picking up 22 points and six rebounds. Tony Parker and Matt Bonner each had 16 points, and Manu Ginobili contributed eight points.

There are two ranked teams in action on the college basketball schedule for Thursday, with No. 12 Washington at Texas Tech, and USC at No. 2 Texas. The Trojans (2-2 SU, 0-2-1 ATS) are coming off a 51-48 loss to Nebraska on Sunday, with Alex Stepheson tossing in 13 points in the defeat. The Longhorns (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS) pounded Rice by a score of 77-59 in their last game on Sunday. Dexter Pittman had a team-high 21 points in that win, and Varez Ward scored 15 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 11 games on the National Hockey League's busy schedule for Thursday night, including Florida at Washington. The 16-5-6 Capitals got past the Hurricanes in Carolina by a final score of 3-2 on Monday night, but star forward Alexander Ovechkin left that game early after colliding knee-on-knee with Canes defenseman Tim Gleason. Ovechkin was handed a two-game suspension by the league for the incident, and he won't be eligible to play again until Monday night.

Also on the ice on Thursday: Montreal at Buffalo, Toronto at Columbus, Vancouver at Philadelphia, the Islanders at Atlanta, Anaheim at Dallas, Edmonton at Detroit, Calgary at Phoenix, St. Louis at San Jose, Ottawa at Los Angeles, and Colorado at Pittsburgh. The Penguins improved to 19-9-0 on the season with a 5-2 win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday. Mike Rupp had a hat trick in that win, while Sidney Crosby potted a pair of goals.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Thursday, December 3

      Crying wolf

Western Kentucky made the jump to the FBS in 2009 and the team has struggled, going 0-11 in their first “big boy” games. The Hilltoppers haven’t been as bad at the books, however, going 5-6 ATS this season and covering in three straight.

The ‘Toppers will look to get their first win against an Arkansas State squad that has been awful on the road the last two years. The Red Wolves have lost six consecutive road contests and 11-of-12 dating back to last season, going 1-11 ATS during that span.

Arkansas State will again be without its starting quarterback, Corey Leonard, who tore his ACL two weeks ago. Redshirt freshman Ryan Aplin took over under center last week and threw three interceptions, but rushed for 122 yards on 16 carries.

Oddsmakers installed ASU as a 6.5-point road favorite and that has dropped to 5.5 at some shops. The total sits at 51.5.

      Civil War

A trip to the Rose Bowl is on the line when Pac-10 rivals Oregon and Oregon State meet at the raucous Autzen Stadium on Thursday night.

These two Top 25 offenses will look to light up the scoreboard with the Ducks ranking No. 7 in the nation in scoring offense at 37.7 ppg while the Beavers are No. 20 with a 32.4 ppg average.

Oregon has gone over the posted total in five straight games and the over has cashed in seven straight in this series. Those seven outcomes went over the total by an average of 17.9 points.

Temperatures are projected to be in the upper 30s at kickoff with a 10 percent chance of rain.

The total opened at 61 now can be found as high as 63 at some shops. Oregon is favored by 9.5 points.

      Shark-bitten

The NHL-leading Sharks have gashed through competition recently, winning five of their last six games. San Jose is averaging 4.2 gpg during that span which has equated to 5-of-6 games going over the posted total. The Sharks have scored a league-leading 101 goals this season.

St. Louis seems to be stricken with the blues when they visit the Shark Tank. The Blues have dropped four straight on the road against San Jose and have lost eight of the last 10 meetings in this series. The under has cashed in three straight games between these two clubs.

The Sharks are a heavy favorite at -215 with the total set at 5.5.

      Runnin’ Rockets

Without the defensive prowess of Ron Artest, the Rockets have ignited their engines and transformed into an up-and-down the floor squad. Houston attempts more field goals per game than any other team (87.2) and ranks No. 10 in the league in scoring with 102.1 ppg average.

Golden State has always been a reckless bunch under Don Nelson. The Warriors throw up the fifth-most shots (86.4) in the NBA and average nearly 110 points per outing. Golden State has gone over the posted total in four straight.

The over is 8-2 in the last 10 games of this series and 15-5-1 during the last 21 matchups.

      Texas, Our Texas

Pac-10 basketball is down this year and USC is feeling the wave going 2-2 on the season (0-2 ATS) with losses against Nebraska and Loyola Marymount.

The No. 2-ranked Longhorns are undefeated and 4-1 ATS on the season. Texas has gone 3-1 against the number this year when listed as a favorite of 15 points or more.

Texas guard Varez Ward ruptured his quadriceps prior to the Pittsburgh game and will miss the remainder of the season. The starter led the team in steals and was averaging 6.7 ppg.

Oddsmakers opened the Longhorns as 19.5-point favorites.

      Notable quotable

“We have to do a great job in our run defense. We have always prided ourselves in it, but it does not become any bigger than playing against Oregon with the way they run the football. You are going to have a play an all-around defensive game, but we can’t allow them to just continue to run like they did a year ago.”

-- Oregon State head coach Mike Riley on key to winning the game against Oregon.

        Six-pack for Thursday

-- Big 11 finally won the ACC-Big 11 challenge, as Wisconsin handed Duke its first-ever Challenge loss in Madison. Key was Clemson's loss at home to Illinois, after Tigers had led by 23 in second half.

-- Tulsa 86, Oklahoma State 65-- Impressive win for Hurricane.

-- Pitt was down 13 at half in crosstown rivalry with Duquesne, won 67-58 in double OT; if you took Dukes and 6.5, it was an ugly night.

-- UNLV 74, Arizona 72 in double OT. Wildcats are going to struggle to make NCAAs for 25th year in a row.

-- BYU, Utah both lost at in-state rivals Utah State, Weber State.

-- Portland couldn't stand prosperity; after beating Minnesota, UCLA in Anaheim, Pilots lost to crosstown rival Portland State 86-82.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday's List of 13: Grading the NFC teams after 11 games

Cardinals-- B-- Warner's concussion is a problem, but otherwise, they've been better balanced this season and will be tough out in January.

Falcons-- C-- Ryan/Turner are both hurt, they're struggling to make the playoffs. Fired the kicker, long snapper this week. Interesting to see if the home crowd gives Michel Vick hero's welcome Sunday.

Panthers-- D-minus-- Fox' loyalty to Delhomme will get him fired, but he might land on his feet if Giants hire him to be defensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting to replace 62-year old Coughlin.

Bears-- D-- Swung for fences with Cutler trade and whiffed; now they don't have pick next April until 3rd round. Good luck with that.

Cowboys-- B-- Defense has been stellar in last month, but tough games coming up will tell if Dallas can win the division. They have chance to avenge a Week 2 loss to Giants this week in Swamp.

Lions-- D+-- 2-9 is 2-9, but looks like they found their QB of future.

Packers-- C-- Warming up at right time; survived couple losses to the Vikings and now are in position to be a Wild Card.

Vikings-- A+-- Everything they've done this year has worked. Will it get them a new stadium in Twin Cities?

Saints-- A+-- Have run ball 49% of time this year, after 36% last year. It will take a superior effort to beat them.

Giants-- C-- Secndary is porous, Eli's foot is hurting, ship is sinking. If they lose to Dallas Sunday, rats will start abandoning ship.

Eagles-- B+-- Injuries to Jackson/Westbrook will hamstring offense; the Vick acquisition hasn't been a factor. Look like a playoff team.

Rams-- D-minus-- Toxic spills aren't cleaned up quickly, and thats what Spagnuolo inherited. Their OL isn't bad when healthy, but their QBs are just pathetic, and only one current WR was on team back in Week 1.

49ers-- C-minus-- Smith has finally played well, but this is a team that was fashionable playoff pick in August, and they're under .500.

Seahawks-- D-- Owner has lymphoma, front office could be overhauled, the QB ain't getting any younger and the OL is a mess. Three of their four wins are against Rams/Lions. Very disappointing season.

Buccaneers-- D-- Rookie QB Freeman has been pretty good. Not sure why they think Morris is better coach than Gruden, but they did, and now they have tolive with that choice.

Redskins-- C---- Team has kept playing hard for Zorn, but Snyder ain't going to take another season laying down. Lost tough games to division rivals the last two weeks.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at San Antonio Spurs

The Celtics are starting to get their swagger back. The 2008 champs are 5-0 over their last five games and have covered the spread in each of the last three.

The ATS success is linked to the increased production from Kevin Garnett. The longtime All-Star is the team barometer, when he’s playing well, so are his teammates.

Since KG hit the winning jumper against the Knicks two weeks ago, he’s gained more confidence offensively. He’s averaging 18.3 points over the last four games and has missed just five of his 27 shots from the field over the stretch.

“Physically I feel really, really good,” Garnett told the Boston Globe. “But you all have no idea of the [stuff] I go through to come in here and be Grade B, Grade A. So I’m a work in progress.”

The Big Ticket was slow coming back from last season’s knee injury. Playing against Tim Duncan should be a good measuring stick of how far KG has come along.

Even if the Spurs can slow down Garnett, they’ll still have to deal with Rasheed Wallace off the pine.

                Pick: Celtics

                Miami Heat at Denver Nuggets

In the run of an 82-game season coaches will tell you there are some games that are good losses. Nuggets coach George Karl got one Sunday when his club fell to the woeful Wolves.

Denver played poorly the game prior, but still managed to sneak out a home win against the Knicks. Karl used the embarrassing loss to Minnesota as an opportunity to rip into his players.

“The playing-hard thing is driving me crazy. Tell me my play-hard (lineup), tell me five guys I can put on the court to play hard every possession?” Karl yelled at reporters after the game. “I had it last year. I don’t have a play-hard team this year, and it’s making me very angry.”

Carmelo Anthony and Co. got the message. The Nuggets blew away the Warriors the following night and should be equally motivated Thursday against the visiting Heat.

                Pick: Nuggets

                              Florida Panthers at Washington Capitals

Call it karma, but Alex Ovechkin is getting his - whether it be by injury or suspension.

The Washington Capitals superstar is serving a two-game suspension after a greasy knee-on-knee hit on Carolina's Tim Gleason in the Capitals’ 3-2 win over the Hurricanes Monday night. Ovechkin injured himself in the process.

Many critics, including Washington coach Bruce Boudreau have frowned upon Ovechkin’s aggressive style of hockey. Boudreau told the media he would talk to his star player about taking it down a couple notches, but later retracted his statement saying he doesn’t want to toy with the NHL MVP’s style.

Ovechkin said he won’t change the way he plays the game regardless of injuries or suspensions.

"Why do I have to listen to somebody who say: 'Hey, you have to change your game, and somebody going to kill you,'" Ovechkin told reporters. "Well, nobody going to kill me. I just play my game and I just enjoy my time and I enjoy my life. It's me, and it is what it is."

While No. 8 stews in the stands, Washington will be without his goal-scoring prowess. The Capitals have won three in a row with Ovechkin picking up four points in that span. They’ve also got solid performances from their goaltenders, Simeon Varlamov and Jose Theodore, during this stretch.

Ottawa Senators at Los Angeles Kings

Scotiabank Place will be a sight for sore eyes when the Ottawa Senators return home from their current five-game, West Coast road trip.

The Sens have lost the first two games of this trip, most recently a 5-2 defeat to the San Jose Sharks in which former forward Dany Heatley recorded two assists. That effort marked the third loss for Ottawa in its last four games.

The Senators are averaging just two goals a night in this span and desperately need their star players to pick up their performances. Daniel Alfredsson has just three goals in the past 10 games, but did register an assist in Tuesday’s loss. Fellow star Jason Spezza has been even more invisible, scoring one goal since November 5.

Critics have said Heatley’s departure is the biggest reason for the Senators’ scoring decline. The gritty playmaker has blossomed in San Jose, leaving Spezza and Alfredsson to struggle with new linemates.

"Obviously I want to have better offensive numbers than I have, but I think my game has improved, and Milan (Michalek) has pushed me to become a better defensive player, killing penalties with him," Spezza told reporters.

"He has brought different aspects to my game, and hopefully I can round everything out here and become an offensive threat and play in all situations.

"When you play with a guy for so long, you do miss certain things. We had great chemistry, but, as a player, you move on.”
