    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, November 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers host the Penguins, the Bulls visit Milwaukee, and the Saints try to remain unbeaten when they battle the Pats.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

This week's Monday Night Football matchup has New England (7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS) at New Orleans (10-0 SU, 7-3 ATS). The Saints kept their perfect record intact last week with a 38-7 thumping of the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. Drew Brees went 19-of-29 for 187 yards passing in that contest, with three touchdowns and no interceptions, while Mike Bell rushed for 75 yards and a pair of scores. Reggie Bush (knee) is listed as QUESTIONABLE, but is expected to see action.

The Patriots won their seventh game in 10 attempts last week with a 31-14 home victory over the rival Jets. Tom Brady was good on 28 of 41 pass attempts for 310 yards for New England in that contest, with one touchdown and no interceptions. Laurence Maroney picked up 77 yards on the ground and scored twice, while Randy Moss had a TD catch. The Pats are pegged as 2-point road underdogs for Monday night's game, with the total for the matchup at 56 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up just four games on Monday, with Philadelphia at Dallas, Memphis at Utah, Indiana at Golden State, and Chicago at Milwaukee. The Bulls (6-8 SU, 4-10 ATS) fell 105-86 in Utah in their last game on Thursday, with Luol Deng scoring a team-high 26 points and Derrick Rose adding 19 points in the loss. The Bucks (8-7 SU, 9-6 ATS) are coming off a 100-98 home loss to Orlando on Saturday night. Ersan Ilyasova had 20 points and 16 rebounds in that defeat.

As well, the top team in action in college hoops on Monday is Kentucky, which hosts N.C. Asheville. The Wildcats (6-0 SU, 2-3 ATS) beat Stanford 73-65 in the championship game of the Cancun Challenge last time out, with John Wall scoring 23 points. Other ranked teams in action on Monday include Syracuse, which plays host to Colgate, and Georgetown, which gets a visit from Mount St. Mary's. The Hoyas sit at 4-0 SU and 1-1 ATS through four games on the season.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are eight games on the NHL's slate for Monday, with Washington at Carolina, Buffalo at Toronto, Florida at Atlanta, St. Louis at Columbus, Dallas at Detroit, Colorado at Tampa Bay, Calgary at Nashville, and Pittsburgh at the Rangers. The 18-9-0 Penguins routed the 13-12-1 Rangers by a score of 8-3 when the teams met in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. Sidney Crosby had a hat trick and two assists for the Pens in that win, while Evgeni Malkin had two points. Stephen Valiquette was in goal for the Rangers, allowing eight goals on 33 shots.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Monday, November 30

      Over-tones

Monday Night Football is the most watched sporting event of the week and tonight’s matchup features a pair of offensive juggernauts that can score at will.

The Saints (36.9 ppg) and the Patriots (29.0 ppg) are the top two scoring offenses in the NFL. The total for the game was released at 55, the highest number so far this season, and has risen to 56.5 at most shops.

When two teams are in the MNF national spotlight, they look to light up the scoreboard. Eight of 12 primetime games in 2009 have sailed over the posted total.

New Orleans has a 4-5-1 over/under record this season while New England is 6-4. Both teams have posted at least 30 points in four of their last five games.

      Walkin’ in Memphis

After “The Answer” departed Memphis, the Grizzlies have come up with a semblance of a solution. Memphis went 0-3 with Iverson in the lineup, but in 11 games since has gone 5-6 overall and 6-5 ATS.

The Grizz are in a back-to-back situation on Monday after losing 98-88 at the Clippers yesterday as 3.5-point underdogs. It will be Memphis’ fourth B2B of the season and the team is 0-3 straight up and 1-2 ATS in that scenario.

Memphis is a young team with its starting five holding 15 years of NBA experience under their belts, but will continue to grow and improve.

The Grizzlies face the Jazz, who have won nine straight in the series and gone 8-1 ATS during that span. Utah opened as 10-point favorites with a posted total of 207.5.

      The Crosby Show

Penguins’ center Sidney Crosby is coming off his fifth career hat trick (including playoffs) as Pittsburgh dismantled the Rangers 8-3 on Saturday.

Sid the Kid also scored a trio of goals last month against Montreal and the Penguins are 3-1 in games following a Crosby hat trick.

Pittsburgh will look to add a win to that record on Monday night, but the team has lost eight straight at Madison Square Garden where they will meet the Rangers. During that winless stretch, Crosby totaled a single goal.

The Penguins have won five straight versus the Rangers, but all of those games were inside the cozy confines of Mellon Arena. Pitt’s last win in New York came in March of 2007.

The Pens have been very profitable recently, winning six of eight and earning 3.75 units on the moneyline during that span. Pittsburgh is tied with Washington atop the Eastern Conference standings with 36 points.

New York has dropped six of 10 outings and has averaged 2.0 gpg over its last three. Rangers’ goalie Henrik Lundqvist is expected to be back under the net after missing Saturday’s game.

Pittsburgh opened as a small favorite (-104) but bettors have driven that up to a current number of -120. The total is set at 5.5.

      Notable quotable

“They’ve just been dominant in all phases of the game - returning kicks, covering kicks, offensively, turning the ball over on defense. 29 turnovers is…I don’t think most teams get 29 turnovers in practice during the year. They’re at 29 turnovers halfway through the season.”

-- New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on the New Orleans Saints.

        Six-pack for Monday

Some college basketball info from a busy Sunday.......

-- UCLA lost to Long Beach State, finishes weekend in Anaheim 0-3; Bruins are now 2-4 in what looks to be a very long season.

-- Arkansas lost at home to South Alabama; Hogs are struggling, too.

-- North Carolina 80, Nevada 73. Roy Williams' 600th win, but it was surprisingly close.

-- Akron outscored Niagara 57-37 in second half, rallied from halftime deficit of 31-23 to beat the Purple Eagles, 80-68.

-- West Virginia put an end to Portland's Cinderella run and won the 76 Classic in Anaheim. Mountaineers are as good as anyone.

-- Of the eight games at Disney and Anaheim Sunday, six were decided by eight or less points; four were decided by 1 or 2 points.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up as ports Sunday........

        13) I hear all the time how Vince Young isn't an NFL QB; he isn't smart enough, can't pass well enough, blah, blah, blah. Young drove Titans 99 yards for the winning score, throwing decisive TD pass on last play of game as Titans won their fifth straight game, 20-17 over NFC Champ Cardinals. Young was 27-43/369 passing. Nah, he can't play at all.

        12) How does Mike Tannenbaum, GM of the Jets, keep his job? LY, he spent a 3rd-round draft pick on Brett Favre, then released him after one year, when Jets were 8-3 before Favre (supposedly) hurt his shoulder. Favre sure looks healthy now; who cuts a guy they spent a third round draft pick on? By the way, Joe Montana was a third round pick.

        11) Bad times for the Texans; they led Indianapolis 17-0, but lost 35-27 to their nemesis, their third straight bitter loss to a division title.

        10) Falcon fans can't say Bobby Petrino didn't do anything for them; in Sunday's game, Chris Redman came off the bench to replace the injured Matt Ryan- he led Atlanta to a last-minute TD and a 20-17 win against Tampa Bay. Redman's college coach at Louisville? Bobby Petrino.

        9) Teams that scored a defensive TD were 5-0 Sunday. Arizona was the only team to score on special teams; they lost on last play of game.

        8) Eagles started the game with an onside kick, which Washington damn near ran back for a TD. Second consecutive tough loss for the Redskins.

        7) Tennessee's Chris Johnson is third RB ever to have six consecutive 125+-yard rushing games, joining Earl Campbell ('80), Dickerson ('84).

        6) How many INTs does Jake Delhomme have to toss before he sits?

        5) Bengals-Browns was only game without a turnover this week; it was also the only game where both sides averaged less than four yards/pass attempt. Carolina was most feeble passing team this week (2.7 ypa).

        4) Ravens were favored by 2 points before Roethlisberger was declared out of Sunday night's game; line wound up at 7.5.

        3) Jaguars have been outscored 61-3 in their two trips to west coast.

        2) In second half Sunday, the Bears' offense ran 13 plays for -3 yards. And oh, they don't have a 1st or 2nd round draft pick next April.

        1) Heavily favored Montreal rallied from a 27-11 third quarter deficit to beat Saskatchewan and the win the 2009 Grey Cup, 28-27.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Milwaukee Bucks (-2, 195.5)

Michael Redd fantasy owners should probably put their sweet shooter back on the bench. The Bucks All-Star two-guard says he came back too soon and will take his time before returning again.

“When you play in game motion, you really find out if you’re ready or not,” Redd told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Explosion is not there yet, and it’s obvious. Just not finishing, not getting above the rim.”

Redd strained his patella tendon in the first game of the season and sat the next nine games. He played in two games last week before going back to the sidelines.

Scott Skiles would love to have Redd back in the lineup. Rookie Brandon Jennings is starting to slow down some and Milwaukee is struggling to keep its head above water.

The Bucks are 0-4 straight up and 1-3 against the spread over their last four games.

                Pick: Chicago

Indiana Pacers at Golden State Warriors (-2, 228)

With the return of Mike Dunleavy the Pacers all of a sudden have some nice depth on the perimeter. The production of Danny Granger, Brandon Rush and Dahntay Jones means coach Jim O’Brien doesn’t have to dump too many minutes on Dunleavy too soon.

The former Blue Devil scored 13 points in 16 minutes Friday night against Dallas. It was his first game back since undergoing knee surgery last March.

“He looked really good, did a lot of good things,” O’Brien told the Indianapolis Star. “I know it’s very comforting for a coach to have him out there.

“Things flow and he brings a certain IQ, if you want to use that phrase, to the game that is nice to have.”

Look for the Pacers to get back on track with a win Monday against the Warriors.

                Pick: Indiana

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Panthers at Atlanta Thrashers (-160, 6)

Remember when the Thrashers would only go as far as Ilya Kovalchuk could carry them? Well that’s not the case anymore.

Atlanta is no longer a one-trick pony. The club has a great goaltending duo with stud prospect Ondrej Pavelec and steady veteran Johan Hedberg. Scoring comes from new No. 1 center Rich Peverley, Maxim Afinogenov and Nik Antropov whenever Kovalchuck can’t find the back of the net.

And the team possesses a backend that can hold a lead. After Saturday’s win over the Flyers, the Thrashers are 9-0 when scoring the first goal.

Meanwhile, it’s the same old news in Florida. The Panthers are struggling to stay relevant in the Eastern Conference and have dropped four straight.

                            Pick: Thrashers

Dallas Stars at Detroit Red Wings (-150, 5.5)

The minute the Wings look like they’ve got things straightened out and could go on a long win streak, they turn around and stink up the joint. Over a three-game stretch two weeks ago, Detroit beat Columbus, Vancouver and Anaheim by a combined score of 19-6.

Since then, Hockeytown is 2-5 and during the stretch the Wings scored just eight goals.

The offense is down from the blue line. Nicklas Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski were the highest-scoring defensive pair the last two seasons. Through 25 games, the two have just 20 points between them. But this is just part of an overall problem in Detroit.

“Sometimes, things don’t go your way for a while,” Wings coach Mike Babcock told Michigan Live after his club fell 3-0 to the Flames last week. “Are you going to hang your head and feel bad, or are you just going to keep staying determined?"

Look for Detroit to snap out of its scoring slump and pick up a home win over the Stars.

                            Pick: Detroit

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
