    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, November 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Texans seek a win over the Colts, the Steelers take on the rival Ravens, and Calgary plays host to the 97th Grey Cup.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Texans (5-5 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) will try to tag the Colts (10-0 SU, 6-4 ATS) with their first loss of the season on Sunday when the teams meet in Houston in early-afternoon NFL action. Houston was defeated 20-17 by the Titans on Monday night, with Matt Schaub throwing for 305 yards and two touchdowns in that loss. The Colts won their 10th straight game with a 17-15 victory in Baltimore last time out. Peyton Manning threw for 299 yards in that game, with one TD and two INTs. Oddsmakers have the Colts as 3.5-point faves, with the total at 47.5 points.

Other afternoon games on the NFL's Sunday schedule: Miami (-3) at Buffalo, Seattle (-3) at St. Louis, Washington at Philadelphia (-9), Tampa Bay at Atlanta (-12), Cleveland at Cincinnati (-14), Carolina at the Jets (-3), Kansas City at San Diego (-14), Jacksonville at San Francisco (-3), Arizona at Tennessee (-3), and Chicago at Minnesota (-11). The Bears (4-6 SU, 4-6 ATS) were beaten 24-20 by the Eagles last week, and the Vikings (9-1 SU, 6-3-1 ATS) trounced Seattle 35-9.

As well, the NFL's Sunday night matchup for the week has Pittsburgh at Baltimore. The Steelers (6-4 SU, 3-7 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from an 27-24 overtime loss in Kansas City last week, with Ben Roethlisberger throwing for 398 yards with three TDs and two INTs before getting knocked out of the game. The Ravens got 256 yards and one interception from Joe Flacco in their loss to the Colts last weekend, while Billy Cundiff paced the offense with five FGs.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Football League will stage the Grey Cup on Sunday night, with Montreal taking on Saskatchewan at Calgary's McMahon Stadium. The Alouettes won the East Final last week, rolling past British Columbia in a 56-18 home win. The Roughriders picked up a win at home in the West Final, beating Calgary 27-17. Oddsmakers have the Alouettes listed as 9.5-point favorites for Sunday's championship, with the total for the contest at 55.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 10 games on Sunday, with Phoenix at Toronto, Atlanta at Detroit, Memphis at the Clippers, Orlando at New York, Boston at Miami, Philadelphia at San Antonio, Houston at Oklahoma City, Minnesota at Denver, New Orleans at Sacramento, and New Jersey at the Lakers. Kobe Bryant and company took a break from their homestand with a game at Golden State on Saturday night; the Lakers sit at 9-2 SU and 6-5 ATS at home so far this season.

On the college hardwood there are games in the Old Spice Classic and 76 Classic tournaments on Sunday, along with a matchup between No. 3 Texas and Rice at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Longhorns (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) beat Pittsburgh 78-62 in the CBE Classic championship on Tuesday. Damion Jones poured in 20 points for Texas in that win, while guard Varez Ward suffered a leg injury during warmups and is done for the year. Rice is at 4-1 SU and 1-3 ATS so far this year.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just two games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Sunday, with San Jose at Vancouver and Phoenix at Anaheim. The Coyotes and Ducks met back on November 7 in Southern California, with Anaheim pulling out the 4-3 home victory. Teemu Selanne, Bobby Ryan, Corey Perry, and Mike Brown scored for the Ducks in that win, while Keith Yandle, Scottie Upshall, and Shane Doan replied for the Coyotes. Jonas Hiller made 27 saves in that victory.

      Six-pack for Sunday

More NFL trends to ponder, with Week 12 upon us........

-- Bears covered two of their last ten road games.

-- Browns covered three of last thirteen games overall.

-- Jets covered one of last seven as a home favorite.

-- Eagles are 7-2 as a home favorite of 10+ points.

-- Chiefs are 10-4 vs spread as an underdog in division games.

-- Tennessee covered 19 of last 26 against the NFC.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

      13) There was almost an ugly scene near the end of UCLA-USC game in the LA Coliseum late Saturday night, and it was Pete Carroll's fault. This coming from someone who has been a USC fan all his life.

Trailing 21-7 with under a minute left, UCLA called a timeout to stop the clock, hoping to get the ball back, even though they weren't going to win. USC responded by throwing a bomb for a TD, then celebrating on the sidelines as if they had just won a $200M Powerball drawing. It was bush league, and the UCLA sideline didn't take it very well.

      12) What happened next is something I've never seen before; the entire UCLA team started walking on the field, towards the USC bench. Refs were powerless to stop them; only quick work by both coaching staffs prevented a full-scale rumble from breaking out. Eventually, they played the last 44 seconds without incident, Carroll and Rick Neuheisel had one of the shortest handshakes in recorded history, and that was that.

      11) But Carroll's going to have a problem because of the way he chirped at Jim Harbaugh after the Stanford game; if you're going to bitch because another coach ran the score up on you, why would you do it to another team, even if it is your archrival? The whole thing was just ugly.

Elsewhere on what has become Rivalry Saturday........

      10) How has Stanford not retired #7? Must be a story there.......

      9) Coaches at Louisville and Akron have already been fired; Memphis is on verge on naming a replacement for Tommy West. With recruiting the main focus of most coaching staffs for the next few weeks, replacing a fired coach quickly is important for a program, to gain a foothold with the current recruiting class. Lot of stuff will happen this coming week.

      8) BYU won its last ten games that were decided by 8 or less points.

      7) Clemson and Georgia Tech were both caught looking ahead to next week's ACC title game, and because of that both lost their rivalry games.

      6) Has any team ever started 5-0 and finished 5-7? Kansas Jayhawks just did it; their 41-39 loss to rival Missouri was so incredibly bitter it hurt to watch and I could care less about either team. Reesing was 37-56 for 498 passing yards in his last college game. He reminds me a lot of Doug Flutie- I hope some NFL team gives him a chance.

      5) If there is such a financial crisis, who did so many teams break out a completely new set of uniforms/helmets this week? Missouri-Florida- UCLA-BYU-LSU-Virginia Tech all had new duds. LSU's gold helmets were especially gaudy. Where does that money come from?

      4) Idaho scored 49 points and lost. Total yardage in their 52-49 loss to Utah State was 532-531, USU. 7-5 Vandals still hope to go bowling.

      3) Kudos to Hawai'i for winning last four games and becoming eligible for a bowl. Rainbow Warriors upset Navy Saturday night, 24-17.

      2) I think all the 7-5 teams should get a bowl bid before any 6-6 team gets one, especially 6-6 teams who beat a I-AA opponent, but thats not going to happen. Naive as I am, I still think it should.

      1) Is it true there are no one-loss teams left? Either Florida or Alabama will be one at this time next week, but other than that, there aren't any.

Montreal is by far the best team in CFL; they beat Saskatchewan twice this season, 43-10 in Regina in Week 3 (-4; outgained Riders 412-192 in sloppy contest where both sides lost four fumbles), 34-25 at home five weeks later (-12; Alouettes were +3 in turnovers, were outgained by 135 yards). Als won last three games overall by 35-25-36 points; their last five games all went over total- they're 7-2 vs spread in last nine games as a favorite. Riders are 4-1-1 in last six games, 7-3 vs spread as underdog this season. Saskatchewan played two great games at McMahon this yr, winning 24-23 in Week 5, then a 44-all tie in Week 16. Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Montreal Alouettes (-9.5, 55.5)

Somehow these two teams share some similarities, starting with the obvious unity that bonds the players in both locker room and the preoccupation with details that has been enforced by their respective coaching staffs.

Both these teams got to Calgary by the front door - having both won their regular season and playoff division titles. Everything seems to indicate we will have a wonderful football game, even if the Alouettes won easily in both regular-season matchups (43-10 in Regina, 34-25 in Montreal one month later).

But actually, if you consider the statistics it should be a one-way affair in favour of the Alouettes, a team that averaged 33.3 points per game this year, compared to the 28.6 points per game scored by the Riders.

Add to these numbers the fact that the Montreal defence gave up only 18 points per game compared to almost 27 by the Saskatchewan, So we shouldn’t be surprised that the opening line tagged the Als as 9.5-point favorites.

The Alouettes have the best QB in the CFL, Anthony Calvillo, who completed close to 72 percent of his passes in 2009. In comparison, his counter-part Darian Durant only completed around 60 percent of his passes. Both quarterbacks have reliable targets to throw at: Bagg, Fantuz, Clermont and Getzlaf for the Riders while Montreal can count on Watkins, Cahoon, Richardson, Bratton and Green.

Montreal has an advantage in the backfield where Avon Cobourne had another stellar year and two great games against the Riders with a combined 242 yards rushing. Suffering from a shoulder injury that kept him out of the lineup for a few games, Riders RB Wes Cates didn’t have the type of season he is capable of.

Once again, the defence could decide the outcome of this game. The Als secondary is much more solid than the Riders and the front seven is superior, although no one should underestimate a defence that aligns defensive ends as talented as John Chick and Stevie Baggs.

On special teams, the advantage goes to the Alouettes starting with kicker Damon Duval and star returner Larry Taylor. The Riders will have to beware of Taylor on punt and kickoff returns.

The crowd will heavily rally behind the Roughriders but it won’t be enough, The Montreal Alouettes will win their first Grey Cup since 2002 and will cover the spread.

        Pick: Montreal -9.5

        Last Week 2-0, season 44-31-1

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons

When it rains it pours in the Motor City.

The Detroit Pistons, who were dealing with injuries to starters Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton, are now without newly acquired shooting guard Ben Gordon, who missed Friday night's loss to the Los Angeles Clippers with a sprained ankle.

Those injuries have left the Pistons to rely on their untested talents. Rookies Austin Daye and Jonas Jerebko moved into the starting lineup alongside third-year point guard Rodney Stuckey. Off the bench, Detroit went to three-year pro Will Bynum, who scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Friday's loss.

"We have a lot of guys who can play multiple positions,"Stuckey told reporters. "(Gordon) is a scorer and we are going to miss him. He is going to be back soon, though. This is an opportunity for our young guys to come in and play."

Gordon is doubtful heading into Sunday's game with Atlanta. The Hawks are coming off a win over the Philadelphia 76ers and have been victorious in eight of their last 10 games. Atlanta has won and covered each of its last three meeting with Detroit.

              Pick: Atlanta

Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-2.5, 194)

Houston turned some heads at the start of the schedule, despite missing Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The team maintained its scoring punch thanks to role players like Aaron Brooks, who is averaging 16 points per game.

However, in recent games, the Rockets' spark plug has struggled and the team has suffered because of it. Brooks has had scoring performances of nine, eight and 12 points in the past three contests, leading Houston to 2-1 record in which it failed to cover in each game.

Brooks was 5-for-16 from the field in the Rockets' most recent outing, a 92-84 loss to the San Antonio Spurs Friday. The former Oregon Ducks was just 1-for-4 from beyond the arc and got to the foul line only once on a three-point play late in the game.

Brooks could have a hard time getting loose against a talented and energetic Thunder backcourt. Oklahoma City ranks seventh in team steals with pickpockets on the perimeter in Thabo Sefolosha, Kevin Durant, Russel Westbrook and rookie James Harden.

              Pick: Oklahoma City

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-156, 5.5)

An extended home stand was all the Ducks needed to snap their early-season funk. Anaheim has won four of their last five games and have two more games inside the Honda Center including Sunday's tilt with the Coyotes.

The Ducks are coming off a big 3-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night. They scored all three of their goals on the power play, turning in a 60 percent success rate with the man advantage. On the year, Anaheim ranks fourth in power-play efficiency with a 24 percent success rate.

“You could tell guys were focused today,” goaltender J.S. Giguere said after the shutout victory. “We knew that we had to play a good game to be able to have success against them. It was one of our better games.”

Anaheim won their last meeting with Phoenix, taking a 4-3 victory at home at the start of the month.

                          Pick: Anaheim -156

San Jose Sharks at Vancouver Canucks (-102, 5.5)

A red-hot goaltender can be a goldmine for NHL bettors. A red-hot Roberto Luongo could send your kids to college.

The Canucks All-Star netminder is beginning to heat up, allowing just over one goal over his last five games including a 4-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night. He stopped 31-of-32 shots, improving his GAA to 2.45 and his save percentage to .912 on the year.

"They had a few chances, especially in the second period," Luongo told reporters. "I was seeing the puck well and it's something to build off of."

Luongo appears to be 100 percent for the first time this season. He missed six game earlier in the schedule with a hairline rib fracture. He was stellar in his most recent start against San Jose, turning away 28 shots for a 3-1 Vancouver victory at home last March.

                          Pick: Vancouver -102
