    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, November 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Heat take on the Magic, the lowly Nets play in Portland, and the Blackhawks and Sharks meet on the ice in San Jose.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are a dozen games on the NBA schedule for Wednesday, including Miami at Orlando. The Heat (8-5 SU, 6-7 ATS) are coming off a 102-101 home win over the Hornets last time out, with Dwyane Wade pouring in 31 points and Michael Beasley adding 17 points. The Magic (11-3 SU, 9-5 ATS) won 104-96 in Toronto on Sunday, as Vince Carter scored a team-high 24 points against his old team. Dwight Howard tossed in 17 points and added 12 rebounds in Sunday's victory.

Also on the NBA slate for Wednesday: Toronto at Charlotte, the Clippers at Indiana, Philadelphia at Boston, Cleveland at Detroit, Denver at Minnesota, Milwaukee at New Orleans, Dallas at Houston, Golden State at San Antonio, Memphis at Phoenix, New York at Sacramento, and New Jersey at Portland. The Trail Blazers (11-5 SU, 10-6 ATS) bounced Chicago 122-98 in their last game on Monday night, as Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge both poured in 24 points.

The Maui Invitational and Cancun Challenge both continue on the college hoops hardwood on Wednesday, as does the Preseason NIT. It's LSU vs. No. 13 Connecticut in one of the semi-final matchups of that latter event, while Arizona State takes on No. 7 Duke in the other game at Madison Square Garden. The Blue Devils (4-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) are coming off an easy 104-67 win over Radford in their game on Saturday, with Nolan Smith picking up 20 points and seven assists.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, almost every NHL team is in action on Wednesday, with the league offering up 14 contests. The marquee matchup will happen late on the west coast, with Chicago at San Jose. The 15-5-2 Blackhawks edged Vancouver 1-0 in their last game on Sunday, with Bryan Bickell providing the game's only marker. Antti Niemi stopped all 30 Canucks shots in the win. The 16-5-4 Sharks beat the Ducks 3-2 on Saturday, with Dany Heatley scoring his 18th of the year.

Elsewhere on the ice on Wednesday it's Ottawa at New Jersey, Philadelphia at the Islanders, Buffalo at Washington, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Atlanta at Detroit, the Rangers at Florida, Montreal at Pittsburgh, Boston at Minnesota, St. Louis at Dallas, Nashville at Colorado, Los Angeles at Edmonton, Phoenix at Calgary, and Carolina at Anaheim. The Ducks got past the Flames 3-2 in a shootout in their last matchup on Monday, with Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf both scoring.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Atlanta Falcons brought in four kickers to try out for team, because veteran Jason Elam has hurt them with key misses this season.

-- Mike Holmgren turned down the Bills, seems more interested in the GM jobs in Cleveland and Seattle.

-- North Carolina hoop coach Roy Williams had surgery on his left shoulder and will wear a sling for four weeks; his next win is #600.

-- Looks like Mississippi State won't get Renaldo Sidney eligible at all this season; the NCAA is dragging its feet, so the kid will redshirt or just go to Europe or the NBA Draft after the season.

-- Texas beat Pitt by 16 in the finals of the Kansas City tournament.

-- Cincinnati beat Maryland fairly easily, will play Gonzaga in the finals of the Maui Classic Wednesday night.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.......

      13) Browns-- Lost to Detroit Sunday because Mangini called timeout, allowing injured Stafford back in the game. They're a mess.

      12) Bills-- Problem with firing the coach is that you're left with same crummy players who got that coach fired. Buffalo lost to the Browns.

      11) Buccaneers-- Hired a 32-year old coach who has now fired both of his coordinators by time he has coached 10 games. They've used three quarterbacks, have clearly not upgraded from Jon Gruden.

      10) Lions-- They should make sure Stafford is healthy for next year; no reason to risk him to more abuse this season. The kid has proven he has the toughness necessary to lead a team.

      9) Rams-- Now that Bulger is history, hopefully Kyle Boller will take some time off from dating Carrie Prejean to lead the squad to a couple of wins. St Louis tries hard, has been playing tough schedule.

      8) Cowboys-- Trailed last two games 3-0 at half; they'll need to use the 11 days after Oakland game to get offense back on track.

      7) Bengals-- Championship teams don't lose to the Raiders.

      6) Chargers-- Would you want to play them in playoffs? Me either.

      5) Cardinals-- Have balance on offense, a stingier defense than last year, so as long as they keep #13 healthy, they'll be dangerous again.

      4) Patriots-- They have casinos on riverboats in Mississippi, so coach Belichick can go play blackjack and hit on 20.

      3) Vikings-- I'm convinced Favre played poorly on purpose at end of last year so Jets would release him and he would wind up here.

      2) Colts-- Six wins by four or less points. Don't think they'll win AFC.

      1) Saints-- Big test when the Patriots come to town Monday. Not sure a loss would be the worst thing for them at this point.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Minnesota Timberwolves (+9, 202)

It doesn’t seem to matter how many points you give the T-Wolves on their home court, they’ll find a way to blow the spread.

The rebuilding Wolves are 1-6 straight up and 2-5 ATS in their own gym. Opponents are outscoring are outscoring the home side at the Target Center by an average of 11.4 points per night.

There are some big issues going on behind the scenes in Minny these days. Team president David Kahn confused a lot of people by drafting two point guards with his two top 10 picks last draft. But according to New York Daily News columnist Mitch Lawrence, Kahn’s biggest mistake might have been hiring Kurt Rambis as the new coach.

Kahn apparently didn’t know that Rambis would be running the triangle offense in Minnesota. The question never came up in interviews and now Rambis is running an offense that doesn’t fit well with the team’s parts.

Rookie Jonny Flynn is confused and he’s restricted from attacking the rack and playing the pick ‘n’ roll, two things he excelled at in college.

Take the Nuggets even though they’re played on the second night of a back to back.

            Pick: Nuggets

Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets (-4, 201.5)

Tracy McGrady is like a dumped girlfriend that just won’t go away. The former All-Star and league scoring champ wasn’t supposed to be completely recovered from his microfracture surgery until the January, but McGrady insists he’s ready now.

“I feel I can play, but the coach and the GM obviously feel different,” McGrady told the Houston Chronicle on Tuesday. “They run this team and until they feel I’m ready to play, then I guess I’ll be watching.”

The truth is the Rockets have moved on from T-Mac. He really pissed them off last season when he had the microfracture surgery and didn’t tell the organization beforehand.

Houston is going younger and McGrady isn’t part of the plan. General manager Daryl Morey and coach Rick Adelman like the chemistry of this year’s club and they worry McGrady will ruin it.

We like Morey and Adelman’s reasoning. Houston is a better team than most people think.

            Pick: Houston

Maryland was lethargic in 69-57 loss to Cincinnati Tuesday, going 4-16 from arc; three starters played 31+ minutes, against best teams Terps played this year, by far. Wisconsin shot under 40% in both Maui games so far. ACC teams are 17-11 vs spread. Big 11 teams are 11-10.

Cincinnati held Vanderbilt to 28% from floor, Maryland to 36% in first two Maui games; they've got senior PG in Vaughn and are long, athletic on wings, which is why they defend well. Gonzaga lost four starters from LY's 28-6 team- they had three starters play 34+ min both games.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Minnesota Wild (+115, 5)

The Bruins welcomed back star forward Marc Savard in their 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues Monday. Savard, who missed 15 games with a broken foot, registered no shots on goal and picked up a high sticking penalty in 16:30 minutes of playing time.

“Not bad,” said Savard, grading his performance . “I felt a little rusty at times. I had some chances. I felt pretty good. I think it’s coming. I had fun and we won. It’s a good thing.”

Before suffering the injury, Savard had seven points in eight games, scoring four goals and posting a plus/minus of +1. He’s slowly making his way back and brought some life to the second-unit power play.

“I think other guys feed off it,” Savard told the Boston Herald. “The second unit obviously is the one that scored the two goals. Once we go out and have some chances and calm it down, they go out and keep it going. It was good to see them capitalize, because as we’ve said, down the stretch (power plays are) going to be the difference.”

Boston has won three straight heading into Wednesday and is hoping to end its slump against the Wild. The Bruins have won just one of their last nine meetings with Minnesota going back to 2000.

                      Pick: Boston

Philadelphia Flyers at New York Islanders (+121, 5.5)

When it rains it pours in Philadelphia.

The Flyers, already dealing with the loss of star Simon Gagne, found out this week that they will not have the services of forwards Darroll Powe and Blair Betts for at least two weeks. Arron Asham is also out with a injury, leaving Philly without four of their top 12 forwards and 33.3 percent of its scoring.

"We have to march ahead, and some of the others have to step up," general manager Paul Holmgren told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Flyers have lost three straight games heading into Wednesday’s contest with New York. They desperately need stars like Jeff Carter and Mike Richards to step up. Both of those players have combined for just eight goals in the past 10 games.

                      Pick: New York

                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: Hossa’s return, Preds roll and Caps collapse
                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Third team’s a charm

Marian Hossa is expected to make his Chicago Blackhawks debut in San Jose Wednesday. He will try to avoid losing in the Stanley Cup final for a third straight season.

Hossa will improve an already potent offense and provide a veteran presence for the youngest team in the league.

“The advantage of this team is it's mostly young guys who are just getting better and stronger in their understanding of the game,” said Hossa.

Len Ziehm of the Chicago Sun-Times, is reporting Hossa will probably start on a line with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.

Hossa has scored 40 or more goals three times and has averaged at least a point per game in four of his last six seasons.

The Blackhawks have won seven games in a row, scoring 26 goals during that span.

                        Hurts like hell

After winning nine in a row on the road to open the season, the New Jersey Devils have dropped three straight away from home.

Mark Everson of the New York Post suggests that injuries finally caught up to an over-achieving squad that is missing five regulars from its lineup.

“We're running out of top six forwards and top four defensemen," said Devils forward Jamie Langenbrunner.

The Devils have gone over the total only two times in their last 13 games (2-10-1). Oddsmakers have set the total at 5 for New Jersey’s last two games.

                        Preddy good

The Preds have won six in a row and are in the middle of a 10-2-0 run that includes wins over San Jose, Chicago, Detroit and New Jersey,

Nashville ranks near the bottom of the league in power-play at 15.4 percent. But as John Glennon of the Tennessean points out, the Preds are 11-0 when scoring a power-play goal.

"I look at special teams as maybe 30 percent of the game's outcome. Most teams only average three or four goals per game, so if you're getting one of them from special teams, that's about 30 percent,” said head Coach Barry Trotz.

Nashville is averaging 2.27 goals per game, so a power-play goal would actually account for 44 percent of its scoring.

                        Caps collapse?

The Washington Capitals may be first in the Southeast Division at 13-5-6, but, as Corey Masisak of the Washington Times observes, the Capitals have had difficulty holding on to third period leads.

Of Washington’s 11 losses this year, five have come after losing a third period lead.

The Capitals’ most recently lost a two-goal third period lead to the Ottawa Senators on Monday. "This was a collapse by 20 guys, and I don't know how else to sugarcoat it," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said.

                        On Schedule

Saturday November 28, Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings

Chicago played three games in four days during a Western Canadian trip, and now travels south to play three games in four days in California. Saturday’s tilt will be the final game of a six-game road trip.

Thursday November 26, Columbus Blue Jackets at Ottawa Senators

Thursday’s game against Ottawa will be the third road game in four nights for Columbus, and its fifth in eight days. The Senators will also be playing their third game in four nights, but will be playing at Scotiabank Place, where they are 9-3-3.

Saturday November 28th, New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins

The Rangers fly south to Florida for back-to-back games against the Panthers and Lightning, then must face the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
