Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Habs host the Blue Jackets, the Nets seek a win in Denver, and Ball State and Western Michigan meet on the gridiron.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football game on the schedule for Tuesday, with Ball State at Western Michigan. The Cardinals (1-10 SU, 5-5 ATS) were trounced 35-3 by Central Michigan in their last game, while the Broncos (5-6 SU, 3-7 ATS) are coming off a 35-14 win over Eastern Michigan. Oddsmakers like Western Michigan to roll to a win on Tuesday, as they've been pegged as 10-point faves.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are six games on the NBA schedule for Tuesday, with Philadelphia at Washington, Indiana at Toronto, Golden State at Dallas, Oklahoma City at Utah, New York at the Lakers, and New Jersey at Denver. The Nets (0-13 SU, 4-8-1 ATS) came up short once again last time out, falling 98-91 to New York on Saturday. The Nuggets (9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS) got past Chicago 112-93 at home on Saturday; Carmelo Anthony had 30 points and 11 rebounds for Denver that day.

College basketball preseason tourneys on Tuesday include the Maui Invitational, CBE Classic, and Cancun Challenge, with ranked Kentucky hosting Cleveland State in one of the matchups at the Moon Palace Resort in Mexico. The Wildcats improved to 4-0 (1-2 ATS) on the season with a convincing 92-63 win over Rider on Saturday. John Wall led the way for Kentucky on offense with 21 points and 11 assists in that win, while Patrick Patterson picked up 19 points and 18 boards.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there's just one National Hockey League game on the Tuesday schedule, with Columbus at Montreal. The 11-11-1 Canadiens were defeated 3-2 in a shootout by the Red Wings on Saturday night, with Michael Cammalleri scoring both Habs goals. Andrei Kostitsyn picked up a pair of assists for Montreal in that loss, while Carey Price made 32 saves. Canadiens forwards Brian Gionta (foot, out indefinitely) and Scott Gomez (lower body, day-to-day) both sat out Saturday.

Ball to the wall

Ball State has lost three in a row and is 1-10 on the forgettable season. The Cardinals rank No. 115 in the nation in passing – having eclipsed the 200-yard mark only three times this season – and are on their second-string quarterback, Tanner Justice, who took over in Week 8. Ball State has been competitive this year, losing six games by a touchdown or less and going 5-6 against the number.

Western Michigan desperately needs a win on senior night to meet the minimum of bowl eligibility requirements with a .500 record. Gunslinger Tim Hiller and the Broncos boast the No. 25 aerial attack in the country so expect to see plenty of fireworks through the air. Home attendance for Western Michigan has been poor all season, and even with the game being televised on ESPN2 there may not be much of a homefield advantage at Waldo Stadium.

"It's an awesome opportunity for our program to be showcased,” said quarterback Tim Hiller. “I'm hoping that a lot of people in Kalamazoo and our faculty and students come out and support us.”

The spread opened at 10 in favor of Western Michigan and has moved to 11 at most shops. The weather is expected to be mild for a November game in Kalamazoo and the total sits at 51.5.

Injured lines

As of Monday night, a total of three NBA pointspreads have not been posted due to key injuries in the lineups.

The Wizards could be without forward Caron Butler in Tuesday’s game against the 76ers. Butler did not practice with the team on Monday and is considered to be a game-time decision with an ankle injury. After returning from a shoulder injury for three games, guard Mike Miller will be out 3-6 weeks for Washington with a strained calf.

The Mavericks Shawn Marion has missed the last two games with an ankle injury and is questionable for the game against the Warriors. He went through portions of practice on Monday, but was unable to participate in full.

"I tried to get through as much as I could,” Marion said. “I can't push off the way I want to. We want to get it back as close to 100 percent as we can."

For the Warriors, head coach Don Nelson will not be with the team due to an illness and forward Anthony Randolph, who is coming off a double-double on Friday, is questionable for the game after suffering a knee injury.

The Thunder and Jazz game is off the board due to the playing status of Mehmet Okur. The 6-11, 263-pound center from Turkey participated in a full practice on Monday after missing three games with the flu. Utah went 3-0 and 2-1 ATS in Okur’s absence.

Sunshine State showdown

The Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles collide in an intrastate football rivalry on Saturday, but will first meet on the hardcourt Tuesday evening.

Two starting forwards are questionable for the Gators heading into the game.

Junior Chandler Parsons is the team’s leading rebounder (8.3 rpg) and second-leading scorer (14.7 ppg), but has a hip injury that could sideline him for the game.

Alex Tyus averages 8.3 ppg and 7.3 rpg, but sustained an ankle injury in Florida’s last game against Troy.

The Gators are 3-0 on the young season (1-1 ATS) while holding opponents to 51.0 ppg. Florida State is also 3-0, but has yet to play in a lined gamed this year.

The spread is set at 4 in favor of the home team, Florida.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Colts were in Baltimore this week, Cardinals and Kurt Warner were in St Louis, Titans were in Houston, all teams playing in cities they used to call home. Somehow, I don't think this was a coincidence.

12) Steelers have allowed a kick return for TD in four of last five games; in last three games they didn't allow a kick return TD, they gave one up on offense. Very strange streak for a good team to have.

11) Yale tried a fake punt Saturday when they had a 4th-and-22 in its own territory when they had a 10-7 lead in last 3:00, and Harvard was out of timeouts. Yale also had best punter in Ivy League. Play gained 15 yards, Harvard took over and scored the winning TD. Not exactly the best way for a rookie coach to end his first year on the job.

10) I'm thinking Michael Vick's long run up the middle Sunday night is a play that'll help the Eagles get a draft pick for Vick next winter.

9) Dallas Cowboys trailed 3-0 at the half in each of their last two games.

8) Bobby Layne is probably still the greatest QB in Lions' history; the new Detroit QB, Matthew Stafford went to Highland Park HS in Texas, the same high school Layne went to.

7) Indianapolis Colts are 10-0 and all, but six of their wins are by four or less points, thats how fine a line there is between winning and losing in the NFL. Thats what helps make it so interesting.

6) Ravens haven't scored a first half TD in their last five games.

5) Jacksonville won its last three games, all by three or less points.

4) During its 6-0 start, Denver started eight drives in enemy territory; in its four-game losing streak, they haven't started one.

3) Chicago Bears are 4-2 in day games, 0-4 in night games. My question is this; how did they get four primetime games in the first 11 weeks?

2) Marc Bulger has a broken bone in his leg and his career with St Louis is probably over, which is just as well; he was 8-27 passing in red zone this season. 8 for freakin' 27. Its time for a change.

1) Vince Young is now 22-11 as an NFL starter; the Titans' last three game were all 17-17 after three quarters- they are first team in history of the NFL to win three games in row that were tied after three quarters.

If the Titans don't want Mr Young, I know a team in the NFC West that could use him.

Golden State Warriors at Dallas Mavericks

Two and a half years ago the Golden State Warriors made history by knocking off the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks. That was then and this is now.

Both sides have made some changes to their roster but one thing is consistent - neither team excels at playing defense.

G-State averages 109.6 points per game, second to only the Suns, while Dallas puts up 101.2 ppg. Neither team is aggressive on the defensive end however. Golden State is giving up over 111 points per game while Dallas is surrendering 95.2 points a night.

Warriors coach Don Nelson won’t be on the bench on Tuesday. Pneumonia has the coach bedridden, so assistant Keith Smart will be drawing up the plays.

New Jersey Nets at Denver Nuggets (-15, 203)

The New Jersey Nets have opened their season with an embarrassing 0-13 start. It doesn’t get any easier on Tuesday with the club stumbling into Denver. The Nuggets are perfect at home thus far with a 5-0 record while the Nets are winless on the road at 0-7.

The New Jersey “swamp rats” are four games away from tying the ‘88 Heat and ’99 Clippers for the worst start in NBA history.

Even with All-Star point guard Devin Harris back in the lineup, the Nets won’t be able to keep pace with Carmelo Anthony and Co.

Florida State (+2) beat Florida 57-55 LY; Seminoles beat three stiffs by 26-42-39 points. Florida is 3-0 vs stiffs, winning by 28-20-22 points, but both teams step way up in class here. Gators have three starters back from 25-11 team (9-7 in SEC). SEC favorites are 15-9 vs spread.

Cornell won couple road games, then came home and lost to Seton Hall 89-79; Big Red has all five starters back from 21-10 Ivy League champs. Ivy League road dogs are 6-5 vs spread. Syracuse beat North Carolina and Cal in NYC last week. Big East home favorites are 7-11 vs spread.

Drexel shot 37-39% in losing first two games, by 10 in OT at St Joe's, by 7 at Niagara; Dragons (-2) beat Penn 66-64 LY. CAA faves are 3-4 vs spread. Penn is 0-2 after losing to Delaware in double OT Saturday, in a game Quakers by 10 at half. Both team have four starters back from LY.

LMU is 2-3, with no losses by more than six points; they upset USC in last game, after being down 33-25 at half. Tulsa has four starters back from 25-11 team; they've beat up on three stiffs so far. WCC underdogs are 5-6 vs pointspread. C-USA favorites are 9-4 against the spread.

UAB (-20) beat Troy 73-68 LY; Blazers waxed Georgia 72-56 Saturday; they're 4-1, losing only to Kent. Troy State has four starters back from 19-13 team (14-4 in Sun Belt); they lost by 22 at Florida Saturday, game Trojans led 32-31 at half. Sun Belt underdogs are 7-10 against spread.

Fullerton got first-ever win over UCLA in last game, 8 days ago; how do they react to success? they've got four starters back from 15-17 team. New Mexico State allowed 98.5 ppg in losing both games vs D-I foes. WAC road dogs are 5-7 vs spread. Big West favorites are 5-1 vs spread.

Kentucky leaves home for first time after winning its first four games by 16-2-10-29 points. Wildcats have three starters back from 22-14 team, plus they have excellent recruits. SEC favorites are 1-5 vs spread away from home. Cleveland State is 3-1, losing at St Bonaventure by 10.

Stanford lost three starters from LY's team that was 6-12 in the Pac-10; Cardinal is 2-2, losing at San Diego by 13, at home to Oral Roberts by a hoop. Pac-10 home favorites are 5-10 vs spread. Virginia beat ORU by 21 in last game; they're 3-1, with only loss by 17 at South Florida.

Texas beat Iowa by 25 last night despite being tied at half; none of the Longhorns played 30 minutes, so they should be well-rested. Pitt beat Wichita State by 13 last nite, forcing 24 turnovers, but four of Panthers' starters played at least 29 minutes. Big 12 favorites are 9-7 vs spread.

Siena lost by 4 at Temple Saturday after leading by 4 at half; Saints are 2-1, have trip to St John's on tap Friday. MAAC favorites are 5-7 vs the spread, 2-5 at home. Delaware is 1-2, beating Penn in double OT in last game, after losing first two games, by 20 to Temple, by 16 to Bucknell.

Buffalo (-2.5) beat Canisius 69-64 LY, after being up 17 at half-- Bulls are 2-1 after winning in OT at Towson Saturday- their only loss was by a point to Vermont. Canisius is 1-1 after losing by 20 at Loyola IL and winning by 10 at St Francis. MAC favorites are 6-7 against spread.

Maryland jogged against host Chaminade in its Maui opener; Terps are 4-0 but this is big step up for them, playing Cincinnati squad that upset Vanderbilt 67-58 Monday, holding Commodores to 27.5% from floor. ACC teams are 17-8 against the spread. Big East teams are 22-15.

Gonzaga won first game of day Monday, holding off gritty Colorado by 4, after being down 11 at half; they only played their subs for total of 28 minutes in tense game. Wisconsin won last game of day, beating Arizona 65-61, despite shooting 4-18 from arc. Badgers are more experienced.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Montreal Canadiens (-135, 5.5)

In order for the Montreal Canadiens to improve this season, they’ll need to be a lot more disciplined. The Habs were outshot 16-3 by the Red Wings on six power plays including two 5-on-3 disadvantages in Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss.

Georges Laraque was a liability in the first period of that game picking up a double minor for high-sticking Darren Helm and bringing down Niklas Kromwall with a knee-on-knee hit on the same shift. Kromwall will have to miss at least two weeks with a sprained left knee.

Laraque had a hearing with NHL vice president Colin Campbell on Monday to review his hit on Kromwall, but according to Red Wings GM Ken Holland, the hit was clearly dirty.

“Absolutely,” he said. “Yes, it was dirty. It was knee-on-knee, and I believe knee-on-knee is a dirty play. I don’t know if the referees saw it. I just saw Nik go down and then I got to watch it on TV and video replay.”

The Columbus Blue Jackets own the second best power play in the league with a 25.3 percent success rate. Expect them to take advantage against the often-penalized Canadiens.
