Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

    Monday, November 23

    Forever Young

Vince Young has made a difference in the win column for both the Tennessee Titans and their backers. The Titans were 1-5 against the spread with five straight losses with Kerry Collins at quarterback. With Young calling the signals, they are 3-0 straight up and ATS, averaging 35 points per game. Young is 4-0 SU and ATS in his career vs. Houston. The Titans are getting four points from the host Texans with a total of 48.5

    Total recall

Ball State and Western Michigan have played to the over in four of their last five meetings, with at least one team scoring at least 41 points in all but one of those games. No total has yet been posted for Tuesday's nationally televised game, but the number has averaged 55.8 in the last five matchups.

    It's not Miller time

The Portland Trail Blazers were 7-2 straight up and 6-3 against the spread with Andre Miller in the starting lineup. They are 3-3 SU and ATS with Martell Webster as a starter, including Saturday's 106-78 home romp over Minnesota. Webster will start when Portland hosts Chicago, giving 8.5 points with a total of 180.

    Nothing special

The New York Rangers have lost four of their last five games, primarily due to poor special teams play. In that stretch, the Rangers have just 10 goals and are 2-of-16 on the power play. They have allowed 16 goals, including five when down a man. New York is hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are 7-of-20 on the power play in their last five games. The Rangers are -135 with a total of 5.5.

    King and his court?

There is no line on the Sacramento-Memphis game because of the questionable status of Kings rookie guard Tyreke Evans, who is averaging 18.2 points and 4.8 assists, has a finger inury that forced him to miss Saturday's loss to Houston. Evans scored just three points in the teams' first meeting Nov. 2, when Kevin Martin - also out with an injury - scored 48.

    Staying close to home

When UCLA hosts Pepperdine, it may be without forward Nikola Dragovic, who is questionable due to a suspension for his arrest on felony assault. The team's lone returning starter, Dragovic averaged 9.4 points last season. The Bruins are favored by 14.5 points.

    Running out of running backs

If you liked Rock Cartwright's performance in Washington's cover at Dallas on Sunday, you probably will see it again. After the 7-6 loss, coach Jim Zorn said Clinton Portis (concussion) has been ruled out for next week vs. Philadelphia and backup Ladell Betts suffered a torn MCL. No line has been established; the Redskins are 4-6 against the over.

    Notable quotable

"If our whole focus is not on trying to win and turn this thing around, then it's not right and it's not something we want to do, and it's just one incident and we'll go on."

-- New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni, talking about guard Nate Robinson shooting at the wrong basket a split second after the first-quarter buzzer in Saturday's win at New Jersey. D'Antoni yelled at Robinson when he came to the bench.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Villanova beat Ole Miss 79-67 to win the Puerto Rico tourney; this game was a lot like the games we'll see in March.

-- Miami beat South Carolina 85-70 to win the event in Charleston.

-- DePaul only lost 57-53 to Tennessee in Virgin Islands; pretty good weekend so far for the Blue Demons.

-- Niagara lost by hoop to Austin Peay after leading by 15 at the half.

-- Colorado coach Jeff Bzdelik won't coach his Buffaloes in Maui- his mom is ill and he left the team to attend to her. Former Wyoming coach Steve McClain will coach Colorado in Bzdelik's absence.

-- Knicks had won two straight games, but lost to Celtics in OT by a hoop Sunday afternoon-- they're getting better.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday..........

      13) Who knew Browns-Lions would be game of the day? At one point, Brady Quinn was 7-8/147 passing; at halftime, Matthew Stafford had a stat line of 10-16/270 with three TDs, then showed big league guts on last play of the game, throwing the winning TD pass with 0:00 on clock.

      12) Broncos are now the second team in NFL history ('03 Vikings) to be 6-4, after starting the season 6-0.

      11) Buccaneers ran out of replay challenges with 4:45 left in first half; not only that, but both challenges they used, they lost. Not good.

      10) When are people going to realize that Chris Simms isn't an NFL QB no matter how much he looks like one, or how good his father was?

      9) Giants have serious issues on defense; they've allowed double figure points in second half of eight of their ten games. Falcons had the ball on four second half possessions: three TDs and FG on a drive that ended on the Giants' 7-yard line.

      8) 49ers dropped back to pass 36 times, only ran ball 10 times; just a guess that their run/pass ratio will be lot more even next time they play.

      7) Media types like to mock Norv Turner (not totally sure why) but a look at the Chargers' finishes the last five years say the guy can coach.

      6) Rams' last four home opponents were Vikings-Colts-Saints-Cardinals so things figure to be more manageable when the awful Seahawks come to the Jones Dome next week. Only one of the Rams' five WRs were on the squad when the season started-- hard to pass ball well that way.

      5) Tony Romo is overrated. Simple as that.

      4) First drive summary: On first drive of the game this week, the thirty teams who played so far had four TDs, nine FGs, 13 punts, two INTs and two fumbles. for a points/possession of 1.83.

On first drive of third quarter, they had six TDs, three FGs, 16 punts, two INTs, two fumbles, one lost on downs, for a PPP of 1.70.

      3) 3rd-and-15 plays have been converted roughly 11% of the time so far in the 2009 NFL season.

      2) Mark Sanchez completed 12 passes Sunday; eight to his teammates and four to the Patriots, as the mouthy Jets continue to freefall.

      1) The Bruce Gradkowski era got off to a good start in Oakland as the Raiders played great red zone defense in the third quarter, then scored ten points in last 0:33 to upset the first-place Bengals 20-17 Sunday.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at San Antonio Spurs (-9, 193)

Are the Bucks the story of the season so far? Thanks to the help of super rookie Brandon Jennings, Milwaukee is off to an 8-3 start and has covered in eight of its last 10 games.

A good chunk of their victories have come against the bottom of the league, but the Bucks still have wins over Denver and Detroit and an overetime loss to Dallas.

Jennings is a big part of the success. He’s handling the point guard duties and making up for Michael Redd’s absence on the score sheet.

“Once he gets on the floor, he doesn’t care if you’re Michael Jordan or Earl Boykins,” an NBA scout told the New York Daily News. “He thinks he’s better than you and if he’s not, he’ll try to prove it, anyway.”

The Spurs will be too tall of a task for the upstart Bucks. San Antonio is starting to play much better as a team, which was apparent in Saturday's 106-84 win over Washington.

              Pick: Spurs

Chicago Bulls at Portland Trail Blazers (-8.5, 179.5)

The Trail Blazers went 7-2 with Andre Miller in the starting lineup, but coach Nate McMillan switched back to his original starting five in Saturday night's win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The move is aimed at getting the ball into All-Star Brandon Roy’s hands more often.

“I feel like we tried it (the three-guard lineup), and you could say it worked at times, but me sacrificing hurt the team, so it should get to me playing full-out and getting some other guys in other areas to sacrifice a little bit,” Roy told the Oregonian.

Miller isn’t happy about coming off the bench again, but McMillan is hoping the veteran will give a boost to the second unit.

The Bulls aren’t having much fun on their current six-game road swing. Expect the Blazers to mop the Rose Garden floor with Chicago.

              Pick: Portland

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators

Is there a more embarrassing feat than losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs? The league’s worst team notched a 2-1 shootout win over the Caps on Saturday night.

“I’m not happy with how I played today, and I’m not happy with how my line played today,” Caps superstar Alexander Ovechkin told The Washington Times. “Yeah, we score one goal, but we have to score more. If we have more ice time than everybody, then we have to use it.”

The under is 2-1-1 in Caps games since Ovechkin returned from injury. Monday might be the perfect situation for Washington to break out of its offensive slump.

Ottawa isn’t expected to have starting goalie Pascal Leclaire between the pipes. The former Blue Jacket suffered a lower body injury Saturday vs. the Sabres that forced him to leave the game at the start of the third period.

                          Pick: Over

Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators (-104, 5.5)

How about those Predators? Not much was expected of the club after a 2-6 start but things are much brighter these days for Tennessee hockey fans thanks to Nashville’s 9-2 run over the last 11 games.

Preds players point to the squad’s disciplined style of play as the main reason for the recent success. No team in the NHL spends less time in the sin bin than Nashville.

“It keeps a better flow to the game – more guys rotating regularly out there on the ice,” defenseman Dan Hamhuis told the Tennessean. “When you’re killing penalties, your penalty-killing forwards are getting (overworked) out there and your skill guys are sitting on the bench getting cold. Those are the guys that will get goals for our team.”

The Red Wings have been playing better recently but they were struck by the injury bug again. Niklas Kronwall, a top-four defenseman, is expected to miss at least two weeks because of a knee injury suffered Saturday against Montreal.

Kronwall joins a crowded group of black and blue Wings. Forwards Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Jason Williams are all watching from the press box these days.

                          Pick: Nashville -104
