Game of the day: Central Michigan at Ball State
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Michigan at Ball State (+16.5)

The Mid American Conference continues to bask under the ESPN lights Wednesday night when Central Michigan (8-2, 6-0) travels to Muncie to meet Ball State (1-9, 1-5) in an West Division battle at Scheumann Stadium. The game is televised on ESPNU.

The Chippewas opened as a 17-point favorite and the line has since moved to –17.5.

            Tonight’s forecast

There is a 70-percent chance of rain, with temperatures in the mid-40s. Winds out of the east at 10 mph.

            On the Ball

Under first year coach Stan Parrish, the one-win Cardinals have done a complete 180 degree U-turn from last season’s 12-win team. Ball State’s only victory came against winless Eastern Michigan on Oct. 24, a game in which BSU rushed the ball for 463 yards.

That was the first start for QB Tanner Justice, the backup who replaced injured Kelly Page. Justice, who passed for one-yard in his debut against EMU, had his best game against Northern Illinois last week, completing 11-of-19 passes for a career-best 134 yards. Justice threw for 79 yards in his first two starts.

"I've seen him improve," Cardinals coach Stan Parrish said. "He does what you tell him to do. He manages our team, and that's all we can ask right now."

RB MiQuale Lewis leads the team in rushing with 792 yards on 152 attempts, good for an average of 5.2 yards per carry. Lewis had a monster game against Eastern Michigan, rushing for 301 yards on 26 carries. The 5-6 senior tailback has gained 113 yards on the ground in his last two contests.

WR Briggs Orsbon leads the receiving corps with 46 receptions. After back-to-back 10-catch efforts against Temple and Bowling Green, Orsbon has been held in check the past three games with nine total receptions.

Mistakes have killed the Cardinals, who committed nine penalties in each of the past two games.

            Chips away

What a difference a year makes. Central Michigan is 6-0 in conference play for the second year in a row. Last year the Chippewas dropped their final two conference games – to Ball State and Eastern Michigan.

After a brief hangover from its loss at Boston College, the Chippewas scored 49 consecutive points en route a 56-28 blowout win over Toledo last week.

CMU fell behind for the first time this season against a MAC team, but roared back with seven straight touchdowns as they moved closer to another West Division title. Twenty-eight of the points came off turnovers.

Quarterback Dan LeFevour, who has completed 70 percent of his passes this season, completed 16 consecutive passes against the Rockets and tossed two touchdown passes to move into 16th place in NCAA history with 92. The future NFL QB also scored four rushing touchdowns to become CMU's all-time rushing touchdowns leader with 45 in his illustrious career.

Wide receiver Antonio Brown, who leads the team with 69 receptions for 734 yards and eight TDs, showed no ill-effects from an injury suffered at Boston College. Brown caught 13 passes for 129 yards.

Central Michigan head coach Butch Jones looks forward to tonight’s contest.

“Any chance you get to play on center stage on national television, the only game on, you're selling your product. That's why it was critical that the product be seen by everyone… Any chance you get to sell your program is critical.”

            Ugly stat of the week

Ball State coach Parrish is 3-40-1 SU as a head coach at the Division-1 FBS level. Inside those numbers Parrish is 6-12 ATS in lined home games, including 1-11 ATS versus .500 or less opposition and 5-1 ATS versus opponents with a winning record.

            From the archives

Home teams on Wednesdays are 26-13-1 ATS during the regular season, including 3-0 this season and 10-2 the last two years.

Central Michigan is 4-1 ATS in its last five visits to Muncie.

What Bettors Need to Know: Colorado at Okie State
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Thursday, November 19

Colorado Buffaloes at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-18.5, 47.5)

The Big 12 Conference is on display Thursday evening when 13th ranked Oklahoma State (8-2, 5-1) hosts Colorado (3-7, 2-4) in a non-division contest at Boone Pickens Stadium. The game is televised on ESPN.

The Cowboys opened as 14.5-point favorites and the line has since moved to –18.5 with some books even dealing -20.

                    Still weather

Partly cloudy with a zero percent chance of rain. Temperature in the mid to low 50s with winds 5 mph out of the east.

                    Cowboy clamor

Despite an NCAA-forced suspension that curtailed the collegiate career of All-American WR Dez Bryant, plus a foot-and-ankle injury that has slowed star RB Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State continues to win.

Its only two losses on the season occurred in its second game against Houston and three weeks ago to Texas, a game in which OSU held the Longhorns to a season-low 275 yards of offense.

Under the guidance of first-year coordinator Bill Young, the Cowboys rank 32nd nationally in total defense, allowing 334 yard per game and seventh against the rush – surrendering just under 90 ypg.

Oklahoma State, winners in six of its last seven games, is seeking a sixth conference victory, which would be the most ever for the Cowboys.

QB Zac Robinson, who set an Oklahoma State record last season when he completed 65 percent of his passes, has a shot at eclipsing that mark having completed 158 of 249 passes for a .635 completion percentage in 2009. Robinson has 1922 passing yards, good for 15 TDs and 7 INTs.

RB Keith Toston (958 rushing yards) assumed the starting spot in Hunter’s absence and continues to start as Hunter gains additional playing time.

"Since that Houston loss we've bounced back and people haven't really heard of us. We kind of fell off the map. This game (versus Colorado) is just an opportunity for us to get some exposure to show that we've bounced back from that loss,” contends Oklahoma State LB Andre Sexton.

                    Buffalo chips

The Buffaloes are playing the fourth of five games they'll play in 2009 on a day other Saturday. So far they're 0-3 in such matchups, losing to Colorado State, Toledo and West Virginia in non-conference games.

A switch at quarterback from head coach Dan Hawkins' son, Cody, to Tyler Hansen has failed to ignite the Buffaloes.

WR Markques Simas had back-to-back 100-yard reception games against Texas A&M and Iowa State. He caught 14 passes for 263 yards.

WR Scotty McKnight became the fourth receiver in Colorado history with 60 or more catches in a season. He has 62 receptions, with a CU record of 34 consecutive games with a catch.

SS Ray Polk and LBs B. J. Beatty and Jeff Smart are questionable with injuries. Polk and Beatty missed the Iowa State game last Saturday while Smart played limited minutes because of a stinger that’s bothered him the last three weeks.

                    Hawk sighting

Coach Dan Hawkins is rumored to be on the coaching cut list. Colorado is assured of missing out on postseason play for the third time in four seasons under Hawkins, who is 16-31 overall, including 2-17 SU and 6-12-1 ATS as a visitor.

Hawkins is also 3-14-1 ATS in straight-up losses as a dog in his career.

The Buffaloes continue to be plagued by fundamental breakdowns and rank next to last nationally in penalties averaging 9.3 per game. Colorado's minus-7 turnover margin ranks last in the Big 12.

“It's not all on the coaches. There also has to be some accountability from us. We just flat out have to play better," said LB Smart.

                    Looking back

Since 1989, Oklahoma State is 3-11 SU versus Colorado – with one win by more than 13 points.

Favorites of more than five points are 1-9-1 ATS on Thursdays this season.

Colorado at Oklahoma State [ESPN | 7:30 PM ET]

Colorado: Colorado just wants this season over, just ask head coach Dan Hawkins. Colorado has struggled all season, especially away from home. Colorado has lost 11 consecutive road games SU, and have been outscored by almost 15 PPG over their road games this season. The Buffaloes have only scored 30 PTS in their last 3 road games. QB Tyler Hansen will look to improve on his ball security, as he has more INT's than TD's. Colorado has been an opportunistic defense this year, as they come up with big plays when they need to. This defense will need to play their best game of the season in order to upset the nationally ranked Cowboys on Senior Night.

Colorado is 4-13 ATS last 17 games as a road underdog.
Under is 6-2 last 8 games as a road underdog.

Key Injuries - S Ray Polk (foot) is questionable.
LB B.J. Beatty (concussion) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 20 (Side of the Day)

Oklahoma State (-17, O/U 47.5): This is the last home game for the 12th ranked team in the country. QB Zac Robinson has been ruled out for today's game, so in steps QB Alex Cate. The junior has never started a college game. The Cowboys will look to run the football behind Cate. The Cowboys have run for a combined 575 YDS the last 2 games. Oklahoma St. is ranked 32nd in the country in total defense. The Cowboys have only allowed 1 opponent to score more than 17 points in their last 5 games.

Oklahoma St is 9-2 ATS last 11 games as a home favorite.
Under is 4-0 last 4 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - QB Zac Robinson (head) is out.
S Victor Johnson (knee) is questionable.

What bettors need to know: Boise State at Utah State
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boise State Broncos at Utah State Aggies (+23, 61.5)

                        Line movements

Boise State opened as a 24.5-point favorite but that line made a steady drop throughout the week and now sits at 23 points. The total hasn’t moved much and remains at 61.5.

                        The skinny

Boise State hasn’t necessarily struggled on the road this season, but they haven’t been as dominant on the road as they have been at home. On the blue turf of Boise, the Broncos are 5-0 and outscore their opponents by an average of 30 ppg and allow just 263.4 ypg (4-1 ATS).

They are also 5-0 on the road, but struggle a bit defensively. They are allowing 22.6 ppg and 328 ypg (3-2 ATS). They’ve had two close calls - a 7-point win at Tulsa, and a 10-point win at Louisiana Tech.

Utah State is 3-1 (both ATS & SU) at home this season and its only loss was a narrow 3-point defeat against Nevada in October. The Aggies’ three wins of the season have been at home and their record stands at 3-7.

Don’t be quick to judge the Aggies by their 3-7 record. They’ve been in almost every game this season but just haven’t come out on top. Four of their losses are by eight points or less and the margin of defeat in all of their losses is by just 9.5 ppg.

                        Heisman hopeful

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore is quietly having himself a breakout season. Moore is completing 67 percent of his passes for 255.8 ypg with 32 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

In his last four games alone, he’s completed 70 percent of his passes with 16 touchdowns and just one interception. Last year against Utah State, Moore was 27-of-36, for 362 yards with two touchdowns in a 49-14 Boise victory. The Aggies have had their share of problems on defense this season and rank 107th in total defense and 97th in scoring defense.

They will have to play a lot better if they want to stick with the high-octane offense of Boise State.

                        Aggies key: Ground game

If Utah State wants to stay in this game, they will have to do what few teams have been able to do against Boise State - run the ball effectively. The Broncos have allowed just three of their opponents to finish with over 100 yards rushing; Fresno State, La. Tech, and Idaho.

Those opponents had the three highest point totals against the Broncos this season with 34, 35, and 25 points, respectively. Two of those three games were in the past two weeks. Is that a sign that Boise State is getting fatigued? Or is it just that every team is giving the Broncos 150 percent?

In any case, if Utah State can get Robert Turbin the ball early and often (1122 yds rushing, nine TD’s, 334 yds receiving, three TD’s), the Aggies could remain in this game long enough to get the ATS cover.

                        Trends

Boise State is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games as a road favorite and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 Friday games. Utah State is 8-0-1 ATS in its last nine games as an underdog and 8-1 ATS in its last nine home games. The Broncos have gone over in five of their last six road games, but the Aggies have stayed under in five of their last eight home games.

Head-to-head: the Broncos are 4-0-2 ATS in their last six meetings with Utah State and the game has gone over the total in four of the last five meetings.

                        Weather

The beautiful city of Logan, Utah will be partly cloudy and comfortable. Temps are forecasted for mid 50s at kickoff, slightly dipping to 40s as the game progresses. No precipitation is expected with relatively calm winds (5-10 mph).

College football Top 25 cheat sheet: Week 12
                          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida International at No. 1 Florida (-44.5, 54)

UF could take the Golden Panthers lightly and play the starters sparingly ahead of a date with FSU next week. The Gators have covered just one of their last five games.

FIU’s defense is among the worst in the nation, allowing 490.9 yards per game and 33.4 points per game. The Gators have held five opponents (four from the SEC) to less than 100 total yards in the second half.

                          Kansas at No. 2 Texas (-27.5, 54.5)

The Jayhawks have lost five in a row and now have an investigation of coach Mark Mangino hanging over the team and KU looks as if it has quit on its coach.

Texas has won seven in a row in this series and has won the past two in Austin by a combined 125-14. Horns also can officially clinch the Big 12 South with a win, and Colt McCoy can set a I-A record for career victories.

                          No. 4 TCU at Wyoming (+31.5, 47.5)

TCU could suffer a bit of a letdown after one of the program’s big wins last week against Utah, but the Frogs haven’t done that all year. In their past three games, the Frogs have outgained the opposition by nearly 1,000 yards.

While the Cowboys were no match for TCU last year (54-7 loss), they did upset the Horned Frogs in Laramie in 2007. It will be 30 degrees with snow possible, so that could help Wyoming stay close.

No. 6 Boise State at Utah State (+23, 62)

Boise State is covering big spreads every week. The Broncos are 7-3 ATS this season and 3-1 over their last four games. USU is 1-50 (25 losses in a row) all-time against ranked foes.

Friday's forecast is calling for rain and snow showers with a low temperature of 23, so that might even the playing field a bit for the Aggies. USU hasn’t won a game on a day other than Saturday since 1993 – 15 losses in a row.

No. 8 Ohio State at Michigan (+11.5, 47.5)

OSU has won five in a row in the series – including 42-7 last year. Michigan’s defense has allowed 156 points in its past four games.

UM leads the Big Ten in scoring but has scored more than 30 only twice in the past seven. Top tailback Brandon Minor is doubtful for the game with a shoulder injury.

                          No. 10 LSU at Mississippi (-4.5, 42.5)

Three Tigers starters who sat out last week’s closer-than-expected win over Louisiana Tech are expected back this week for LSU: QB Jordan Jefferson, TE Richard Dickson and center T-Bob Hebert.

Ole Miss is on another late-season surge. The Rebs beat LSU 31-13 last year but have dropped four in a row in this series in Oxford.

                          No. 11 Oregon at Arizona (+6, 60)

Oregon has lost its starting QB to injury in its past two visits to Tucson. The Ducks lost their Rose Bowl shot in a 2007 visit but have 12 of 15 overall in the series. Oregon has scored at least 42 points in every Pac-10 game but one this year.

Arizona leading rusher Nic Grigsby has missed most of the past two games with an injured shoulder, but is expected to play. The Wildcats must win this game to have a shot at their first Rose Bowl.

No. 12 Penn State at Michigan State (+3, 47.5)

The Nittany Lions still have a decent shot at a BCS at-large bid if they win big. But three of the last four meetings vs. MSU have been decided by 10 points or fewer.

Sparty always gives Penn State trouble in East Lansing. The team is 8-4 SU in the last 12 dates at Spartan Stadium. MSU has no injuries to speak of and has won five of its last seven games.

                          No. 14 Wisconsin at Northwestern (+7, 50.5)

The Badgers lead the Big Ten in rushing but go as QB Scott Tolzien goes. He has a 156.4 rating in their eight wins, throwing for 14 touchdowns and four interceptions, compared to no TDs and five INTs in UW’s two losses.

Northwestern’s defense has forced six turnovers and allowed just 26 points in back-to-back wins over Iowa and Illinois. QB Mike Kafka ranks No. 1 in the Big Ten in completions (22.4 per game) and completion percentage (65.8).

                          Minnesota at No. 15 Iowa (-10, 43)

Minnesota’s defense isn’t good and hasn’t held a Big Ten opponent to less than 20 points.

Hawkeyes have won seven of eight in this series, including 55-0 last year.

North Carolina State at No. 16 Virginia Tech (-21, 58.5)

The Wolfpack don’t have much to play for as they won’t be headed to a bowl. Coach Tom O’Brien is preaching for a goal of a .500 finish. Under O’Brien, N.C. State is 3-3 against ranked teams.

Virginia Tech must win out to keep its streak of 10-win seasons going. The Hokie offense should fare well against a Wolfpack defense that has allowed 31 or more points in the last seven games.

                          California at No. 17 Stanford (-7.5, 64.5)

Cal has won six of the past seven in The Big Game. The Bears, who have won four of their past five this season, won’t have Jahvid Best again. But backup Shane Vereen ran for a career-high 159 yards in a winning effort last week.

Stanford has scored 106 points in the past two games against Pac-10 powers Oregon and USC. The Cardinal must win to have any shot of getting to the Rose Bowl. The favorite has won nine of the past 10 in this series.

Air Force at No. 18 BYU (-10, 46.5)

The Falcons don’t turn the ball over. They have won three in a row and covered in five of the past six.

BYU has won 16 of the past 17 in the series, including 38-26 last season. Under coach Bronco Mendenhall, the Cougars are 4-0 against Air Force with an average margin of victory of 19 points.

                          Virginia at No. 19 Clemson (-21, 43.5)

The Cavs seem to be playing out the string under a lame-duck coach. They are 0-3 against ranked teams this year, not covering in any of them.

The Tigers can clinch the ACC Atlantic with a win or a Boston College loss earlier in the day. Behind C.J. Spiller, Clemson is averaging 42 points per game in a five-game win streak (5-0 ATS).

No. 20 Oregon State at Washington State (+30.5, 56.5)

The Beavers still have a realistic Rose Bowl shot, so coach Mike Riley has reminded his players all week not to look past this one and to the Dec. 3 Civil War with Oregon. The Beavers beat Wazzu by 53 last year.

Washington State has led just once this season, and that was its OT victory against SMU. Kevin Lopina starts at QB for the Cougars; he started the season’s first two games and hasn’t played since last week.

                          Memphis at No. 22 Houston (-23.5, 75.5)

Hard to know what effort Memphis will give this week as it plays for already-fired coach Tommy West. The Tigers have committed 11 turnovers in their four-game slide and rank No. 105 in pass defense.

The Cougars don’t even lead the C-USA West, so this is a must-win for them. Houston has had only 18 three-and-out drives all season long. UH has trailed in each of the past three games, and all three were decided by a TD or less (1-2 ATS).

San Diego State at No. 23 Utah (-20, 54.5)

SDSU blew a 27-6 fourth-quarter lead last week to Wyoming and now must win this week (and next) to have a shot at bowl eligibility; the Aztecs are the only school since the Mountain West formed to not reach a bowl.

Utah has won three straight, including 63-14 last year, in this series.

                          Duke at No. 24 Miami (-19.5, 56)

Behind QB Thaddeus Lewis, a South Florida native, Duke has the top-ranked passing offense in the ACC. The last time Miami faced a good QB, Wake Forest’s Riley Skinner threw for 349 yards and two TDs.

Jacory Harris has been wearing a soft cast on his hand to protect a finger he injured while throwing a career-high four picks in last week’s loss to UNC, but Harris will start.

No. 25 North Carolina at Boston College (-3.5, 37.5)

The Tar Heels are starting to play up to preseason expectations, having won three in a row and four out of five (4-1 ATS). They beat BC by 21 last season. UNC is averaging nearly 150 yards rushing in the past five games.

BC might be the most misleading team in the country. The Eagles are 7-3 SU but they haven’t beaten a team with a winning record.

Kansas State at No. 25 Nebraska (-16.5, 43)

This is for the Big 12 North title. If the Wildcats lose, they don’t even go to a bowl because two of their wins are against I-AA teams. RB Daniel Thomas leads the Big 12 in rushing attempts (228), yards (1,166), yards per game (106) and rushing TDs (11).

You would think a huge home advantage for the Huskers, as K-State is 1-4 on the road (2-3 ATS, including a loss at Louisiana-Lafayette. But Nebraska has lost two of their last three home games and scored only 27 points combined in those three contests.

                            Akron at Bowling Green
The Falcons look to build on their 8-1 ATS record in their last 9 November games. Bowling Green is the pick (-10 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Falcons favored by 15. Dunkel Pick: Bowling Green (-10 1/2).
