    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, November 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers host the Capitals, the Pacers visit the Nets, and the Suns look to pick up a win against the Rockets in Houston.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up eight games on Tuesday, including Phoenix at Houston. The 9-2 Suns slipped past the Raptors for a 101-100 win on Sunday, getting 30 points and eight rebounds from Amare Stoudemire. Steve Nash picked up 23 points and nine assists in that contest. The 6-4 Rockets were beaten 101-91 by the Lakers on Sunday, with Aaron Brooks scoring 33 points in that defeat. Trevor Ariza picked up nine points and grabbed eight rebounds for Houston that contest.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Tuesday: Golden State at Cleveland, Oklahoma City at Miami, the Clippers at New Orleans, Toronto at Denver, Chicago at Sacramento, Detroit at the Lakers, and Indiana at New Jersey. The Nets' early-season woes continued on Saturday, as they were edged 81-80 in Miami to fall to 0-10 on the season. Brook Lopez and Trenton Hassell each scored 17 points in that defeat, while Chris Douglas-Roberts was good for 16 points off the bench.

As well, the top two teams in college basketball are both in action on Tuesday, as Kansas hosts Memphis and Michigan State gets a visit from Gonzaga. The Jayhawks rolled to a win in their season opener on Friday, blasting Hofstra 101-65 on the strength of 27 points from Xavier Henry. The Spartans had an easy time in their opener as well, beating up on Florida Gulf Coast by a 97-58 score.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with Carolina at Montreal, Toronto at Ottawa, San Jose at Nashville, Colorado at Calgary, and Washington at the Rangers. The 12-4-4 Capitals are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Devils on Saturday night, with Jose Theodore giving up all five goals on 23 shots. Tomas Fleischmann and Mathieu Perreault had the Caps goals. The 11-8-1 Rangers knocked off the Senators 2-1 in a shootout in matinee action Saturday.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, November 17

      Kobe a bit gimpy

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has a strained right groin muscle that could affect his playing ability. Bryant only managed to sink five of the 20 shots he took during the Lakers' 10 point setback to the visiting Houston Rockets. The Purple and Gold were 9-point faves in that game.

The Lakers have a busy stretch ahead with four home games in the next seven days, but when asked if he would take any games off to let the injury heal, Bryant said, “Absolutely not.”

The Lakers host the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night and odds have yet to be set for that game.

      Bulls down a man

The Buffalo Bulls will be without offensive lineman Andrew West for Wednesday's game at Miami (Ohio). MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher announced that the conference would impose a one-game suspension to West for violating the MAC Sportsmanlike Conduct Bylaws during the Bulls' 27-24 loss to Ohio last week.

West, a 6-foot-6, 314-pound senior is one of the Bulls' best run blockers and one of only two returning starters from last season's offensive line.

Oddsmakers have Buffalo favored by 2.5-points. No total has been set for this game.

      Lehtinen back in

The Dallas Stars will get a much-needed boost for Wednesday's game against the Detroit Red Wings. Dallas expects to get forward Jere Lehtinen back from injury.

Lehtinen is one of the NHL's best defensive forwards and could spark his mates who have dropped five of their last seven games. The three-time Selke Award winner has only played five games for Dallas this season, registering one assist.

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for this game.

      Ovechkin finally ready?

Alex Ovechkin is probable for Tuesday's game against the New York Rangers according to head coach Bruce Boudreau.

"As of today, he's in." Bouderau told the Washington Post.

The former MVP has missed the last six games with a shoulder injury but remains the team's leading scorer with 23 points. Oddsmakers have yet to post a line for this game.

      Double trouble

The Miami Dolphins got bad news when leading rusher Ronnie Brown went down with an ankle injury in Sunday's come from behind win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However that news just got worse.

The running back also injured his foot and it is unlikely that he will be able to play Thursday against the Carolina Panthers. Brown could be out for more than a few weeks depending on the severity of the injuries.

Ricky Williams will start in place of Brown against the Panthers, who are favored by 3-points. The total is set at 43.5.

      Notable quotable

"He is a cool owner and it is good to see him around here supporting us. To have an owner like that, it's cool."

-- Tennessee Titans linebacker Stephen Tulloch, talking about owner Bud Adams, who was fined $250,000 by the league for making an obscene gesture at Bills fans while celebrating Tennessee's victory over Buffalo on Sunday.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Kentucky freshman Wall scored late to give Wildcats a 72-70 win over Miami OH team that led Kentucky by 18 points in first half.

-- Cincinnati was sluggish in 69-62 win over Prairie View; interesting to see how prize frosh Lance Stephenson blends in with Bearcats.

-- UConn beat Colgate 77-63, but game was just 33-32 at the half

-- Pacific is 2-0 after nipping San Diego 56-55; Tigers' two wins are by a combined total of four points.

-- A kid named Rotnei Clarke at Arkansas scored 51 points Friday in Razorbacks' opener, making an astounding 13-17 from the arc; lets see what he does against Louisville Tuesday night.

-- Josh Cribbs got hurt on meaningless last play of game Monday, as dismal Cleveland season got even worse, if that's possible. He left the field on a stretcher, is thought to have a concussion.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff as the hoop marathon starts

        13) As I type this, ESPN is starting 24 consecutive hours of live college basketball games, so if you're reading this at 6am, Monmouth-St Peter's in on TV for your viewing pleasure. A brilliant idea by ESPN, reminding me of the early ESPN days, when they would show games 24 hours a day during the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Good stuff.

        12) On the local front, one of our two local D-I hoop teams, Siena, sold 4,068 season tickets, 500 more than last year, the most in Siena history. Expectations are very high here; Siena-Northeastern is a really good game and is the noon game in ESPN's hoop marathon.

        11) I'm thinking that one of the most underrated coaching jobs of the last 20 years was John Calipari getting UMass to the Final Four back in the mid-90's-- I know they went on probation because of what went on in those days, but still, think of where UMass is now. Minutemen are hell of a long way from the NCAAs, much less making a Final Four.

        10) It can't be much fun being a Cleveland Browns fan.

        9) Maurice Jones-Drew took a knee, sacrificing a sure TD, to allow the Jaguars to kick a game-winning FG on last play, and preventing the Jets from having the ball one last time. Solid coaching, selfless playing-- just wondering how many people lost their fantasy games because of it?

        8) Whoever advised JaMarcus Russell to leave LSU early to enter the NFL Draft did the kid a terrible disservice; he wasn't ready for the NFL.

        7) No more byes in the NFL this year, which is a good thing; read today that momentum is growing for the 18-game schedule when the new CBA between players and owners gets done. Preseason will be cut down, the Super Bowl will be around President's Day, we'll have more football.

        6) The Saints drafted Marc Bulger 30 spots ahead of Patriots drafting Tom Brady-- you think drafting is an exact science? Not so much.

        5) NFL home favorites in division games: 10-23; non-division: 33-29.

        4) NFL home underdogs in division games: 10-7. Non-division: 11-18.

        3) You look at NFC North teams' non-divisional games, you see NFC North home underdogs are 4-0 against spread, road dogs 0-6. Favorites at home are 1-5, road favorites are 5-1. Go figure.

        2) Through ten weeks of the NFL, underdogs in division games are 33-17 against the spread; thats a strong 66% against the number.

        1) Final thoughts on the Belichick debacle Sunday night; He gets a pass due to his immense resume as a coach, but he morphed into Mike Martz for a half hour Sunday night, and that's not a good thing. Belichick is the kind of guy who would hit on 20 in blackjack if he thought the next card was an ace. Sometimes you're too smart for your own good.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Avalanche at Calgary Flames (-190, 5.5)

Has the clock struck 12 for the Avalanche? The third worst team in the NHL just a year ago jumped out to a shocking 10-1-2 mark. But the Avs have come back down to earth. They’ve lost five of their last seven and have given up 15 goals over the last three games.

The slump was underlined in Saturday’s 8-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. Goalie Craig Anderson, who had been carrying the club before the losing streak, let in a couple early goals and was eventually pulled.

“It was one of those nights where I knew we were going to score a couple of goals by the end of the night, but I have to make sure I don’t let them score at the start of the game,” Anderson told the Denver Post. “That’s kind of been our Achilles’ heel right now.”

The Flames busted out of their offensive funk Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Look for Calgary to get to Anderson early and force the Avs to play catch up.

                  Pick: Over

Toronto Maple Leafs at Ottawa Senators (-155, 6)

After a promising start to the season, the Ottawa Senators are struggling, earning a 3-4-3 record in their last 10 games.

The latest setback was a 2-1 shootout loss at home against the New York Rangers on Saturday night. The Senators outshot the Rangers 36-28, but couldn’t capitalize on a 4-on-3 overtime power play.

“We’re playing pretty good here. I wouldn’t change the way we are going,” Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson told the Ottawa Sun. “We’re just not finding ways to win. We’re putting ourselves in great positions, but not coming through. We need to get a little confidence and get on a roll.”

Ottawa has a golden opportunity to get that elusive win on Tuesday night against the Maple Leafs. Toronto didn’t look half-bad for a couple of weeks, but has dropped three straight.

                  Pick: Senators

                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's Best NBA Bets
                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Cleveland Cavaliers (-15, 215)

When news first broke that disgruntled forward Stephen Jackson had been traded, Cavs fans immediately invisioned the 6-foot-8 swingman playing alongside LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal.

Rumors broke that Cleveland was contemplating shipping long-time Cavalier Zydrunas Ilgauskas for big shot Jack, but with Shaq still nursing a strained shoulder, Big Z will be relied upon to provide susbstantial minutes.

Jackson instead was traded to Charlotte in a package deal, which included Acie Law in exchange for Raja Bell and Vladimir Radmanovic.

Although Jackson's offcourt antics will not be missed, his offensive contribution won't go unnoticed.

                        Pick: Cavaliers

Phoenix Suns at Houston Rockets (-2, 221)

Standing alone at the top of the Pacific Division with a 9-2 record, a game and a half up on the defending champs, Phoenix is torching its opponents with an average of over 111 points per game.

Head coach Alvin Gentry has brought back the successful run-and-gun style of basketball. Even with aging vets like Steve Nash and Grant Hill, the club can still get up and down the court and create easy buckets in transition.

The Suns are always a threat to put up high offensive numbers thanks to their high field goal percentage and a 46-percent clip from 3-point land.

                        Pick: Over
